Boehner: Republicans ‘took it in the shorts with Bush-Cheney.’

boehnerIn an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) pinned the blame for his party’s current failures on the Bush presidency:

“We’re digging ourselves out of a deep hole,” he admitted. “We took it in the shorts with Bush-Cheney, the Iraq War, and by sacrificing fiscal responsibility to hold power.”

Boehner has only to blame to himself. He voted to authorize use of military force against Iraq, and voted against a House-approved Iraq withdrawal in 2007. He also voted for the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, which were largely responsible for turning our nation’s surplus into a massive deficit. As Boehner himself said in 2006, “I think that Republicans ought to stand up and support George W. Bush for the job that he’s done.” (HT: Political Wire)

Bush/Cheney certainly pushed the bus over the hill… but you’re the one who didn’t reach down and set the brakes, Boehner

  5. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

    Mr. Boehner,

If the Republicans would stop putting loyalty to their party ahead of loyalty to their country, maybe the mess we’re in wouldn’t have been so bad. Who knows, maybe you would have even won the election. But because you guys can’t seem to get your priorities straight, we have the problems we have now.

Your country and its constitution come first, Mr. Boehner. Try to remember that.

  6. machost says:

Republicans didn’t take it in the shorts BECAUSE of Bush/cheney you idiot, Republicans are taking it in the shorts because they’ve comproised they’re principles for greed and power. Now they have no power, they need to find a way to satisfy and feed their greed.

  7. P.D. says:

Mr. Bohner’s approval rating is a measley 15%. With statments like this, I wonder why?

It sounds like Boehner wants a do over. Sorry Boehner but those votes of his empowered Bush to do the things that he did. Besides, it was just before the DC fatal shooting that Boehner was out there inciting just that type of activity. Has he retracted those inciteful words yet? No, Boehner has been front and center with the policy decisions he now says is responsible. A lot of us out there were predicting exactly what would happen as a result of those policices, but not John Boehner so no dice.

  13. Daddy-O says:

Boner admitting ANYTHING? Admitting responsibility for incompetence?

  19. misscoleopteramolly says:

Interesting how one of the Bush/Cheney champions who dutifully followed in lockstep with them for years has now jumped on the “bash Bush” bandwagon.

Yes — the Bush/Cheney administration damaged our country and our government in ways that will take years to fix. But it’s the Republican Party itself that allowed itself to be taken over by neocons (while kicking moderates out of the tent), and enabled (and championed!) their criminal behavior at every turn.

I do not weep for Boehner or any of the other GOP enablers. But the good thing is that Boehner now realizes that the Republican Party has a problem. And recognizing a problem is the first step toward doing something about it.

  20. Purple State says:

I’m not so sure he’s blaming Bush and Cheney. I think he’s just listing the messes that the GOP has been associated with and what they need to spin in order to make the GOP sterling clean.

If that’s the case, he’s admitting that they need a whole bunch of white-out to fix their problems.

    skarecro Says:

    You’re confusing “debt” with “deficit”.

The National Debt is the accumulated money owed by the federal government to other entities (doubled during the Bush 43 administration)

The federal deficit or surplus is the yearly balance sheet for the federal budget. Bill Clinton’s last four budgets ran in the black. George W. Bush took that last surplus and flushed it down the toilet.

  26. tom says:

I thought Jackson was the last person to pay off Americas debt back in the 1800’s…. what surplus?

Indeed, a confusing concept. During the Clinton years, we were projected to be generating surpluses in current period budgets. That, of course, was before eight years of GDumbya spending like a drunken sailor, starting wars and just generally being incompetent.

Today, the republicans conveniently ignore that fact and focus instead upon future projected deficits and immediately conclude that they are real deficits that have already been incurred. Of course, those projections are “worst-case” scenarios and reflect future costs on the basis of current policy.

The fact of the matter is that future deficits (and, it follows, future cumulative debt) will be subject to changes in policy. For instance, if GDumbya’s tax reduction for the wealthy lapse as scheduled, the deficit will go down. If Obama accelerates withdrawal of troops from Iraq, the deficit will go down. Etc., etc.

What is unfortunate about Boehner and the rest of the elected and unelected mealy-mouths on the right wing is that they have no constructive ideas to offer and they have no political or patriotic motivation to be part of the solution rather than being “the problem” as they have for the past decade or more.

  27. Game of Life says:

  28. Marie says:

Boehner is counting on the short term memory of the public as he fingerpoints any blame away from himself. Or perhaps his own short term memory is at fault here (alcohol can do that).
In any case, the unethical republican is refusing to accept any responsibilty or accountability for his strong defense of Bush&Co for 8 years.
    Typical republican hypocrisy.
Typical juvenile (Eddie Haskell) reply of “don’t look at me! I didn’t do anything! The other guys did it!! Wah! Wah! Wah! Why am I being punished?”

so why does it feel like the republican playbook is just the democratic playbook with a 6 month delay.

Black male makes it to the top of the dem party, gop puts up a black male. A woman makes it almost to the top, so they put a woman as vp candidate. And then the whole phony outrage about fed spending (and the teabaggers didnt say much about healthcare spending or defense spending so you know its phony) Then came the calls to reach out to youth through that, there, ethernet. so that makes it about the right time in the gop book to start bashing the former administration.

gop aint gonna get ahead by trying to play catch up.

Also, looks like history is off to a good start treating bush kindly. They sure called that one (sarcasm)

  35. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    skarecro Says:
I thought Jackson was the last person to pay off Americas debt back in the 1800’s…. what surplus?

They are not talking about America’s debt, they are talking about the budget surplus. It’s not surprising that you don’t know the difference.

At the end of Clinton term we had a $186 billion surplus for our federal deficit but a $5.2 trillion national debt.

At the end of Bush’s term we’ll have about a $485 billion deficit for our federal deficit and a $10.2 trillion national debt.

    2. After falling out of power in the November 2008 Elections, the Republicans become the Party of No and the Goofy Obstructionist Party.

  55. barfly says:

Um, no. Americans realized after the two terms of Nixon, Reagan and Bush, that conservatives always sacrifice fiscal responsibility when they come into power. The first two might have been anomalies, but Bush’s spendthrift manner was the clincher. Three strikes, and you’re out.

“We’re digging ourselves out of a deep hole…We took it in the shorts with Bush-Cheney, the Iraq War, and by sacrificing fiscal responsibility to hold power.”

    ********************************************************

And he — who surely would have possessed at least some influence within his party as House Minority Leader — chose not to do anything about Bush and Cheney while they were in office because…?

This is just one more example of Republican/conservative “do as I say, not as I do”. Conservatives and Republicans are mighty fond of pontificating on the importance of “personal responsibility” — being accountable for one’s own choices and facing the consequences thereof — but when their own choices come around to bite them in the backside, they don’t hesitate to pass the buck and blame other people for their own misfortune. Boehner and his fellow Republicans were not exactly helpless victims here — anything but, in fact. They could have always taken a stand against Bush and demanded that he be more circumspect, or even agreed to impeachment proceedings if he refused to listen. But no-o-o-o-o-o…they decided that expediency and party loyalty were more important than the needs of the country, which is almost certainly why the Republicans suffered losses in both the 2006 and 2008 elections.

No, John, you and the rest of the GOP sycophants (and a few Dems as well) in Congress voluntarily subjugated yourselves to the Executive Branch and, in the process, failed to fulfill your constitutional duty both in spirit and law. Perhaps even more shocking and pathetic is the fact that the impotence on the part of GOP legislators was not isolated and brief rather they regularly abdicated their check and balance role over the course of and 8 year period. Likewise, they utilized the House Floor, the Senate Well, media outlets, etc. to often defend Bush and attack any dissension.

Not surprisingly, you selfishly note that “we’re (i.e. the GOP) digging ourselves out of a deep hole” while callously forgetting that the entire nation lies in the “deep hole” as well while incurring far greater detriment than the “loss of seats” or bad approval ratings.
