In an interview with ABC’s George Stephanopoulos, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) pinned the blame for his party’s current failures on the Bush presidency:
“We’re digging ourselves out of a deep hole,” he admitted. “We took it in the shorts with Bush-Cheney, the Iraq War, and by sacrificing fiscal responsibility to hold power.”
Boehner has only to blame to himself. He voted to authorize use of military force against Iraq, and voted against a House-approved Iraq withdrawal in 2007. He also voted for the 2001 and 2003 Bush tax cuts, which were largely responsible for turning our nation’s surplus into a massive deficit. As Boehner himself said in 2006, “I think that Republicans ought to stand up and support George W. Bush for the job that he’s done.” (HT: Political Wire)
I thought Jackson was the last person to pay off Americas debt back in the 1800’s…. what surplus?
June 12th, 2009 at 12:45 pm‘Took it in the shorts’ WTF does that mean? I think I see a Rush Limbaugh ‘grabbing his ankles’ theme here.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:46 pmAnd they liked it…
June 12th, 2009 at 12:48 pmBush/Cheney certainly pushed the bus over the hill… but you’re the one who didn’t reach down and set the brakes, Boehner
June 12th, 2009 at 12:48 pmMr. Boehner,
If the Republicans would stop putting loyalty to their party ahead of loyalty to their country, maybe the mess we’re in wouldn’t have been so bad. Who knows, maybe you would have even won the election. But because you guys can’t seem to get your priorities straight, we have the problems we have now.
Your country and its constitution come first, Mr. Boehner. Try to remember that.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:49 pmRepublicans didn’t take it in the shorts BECAUSE of Bush/cheney you idiot, Republicans are taking it in the shorts because they’ve comproised they’re principles for greed and power. Now they have no power, they need to find a way to satisfy and feed their greed.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:49 pmMr. Bohner’s approval rating is a measley 15%. With statments like this, I wonder why?
June 12th, 2009 at 12:51 pmThat’s not his recollection…
Somehow I don’t think this is the dinner conversation at a KBR party for legislators, or when Bane speaks with the donors that got the tax cuts and cashed out on derivatives to their offshore accounts.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:51 pmI wonder in Boehner balmes Bush for yesterdays idiot’s cousin’s cancer and broken down vehicle…
June 12th, 2009 at 12:51 pmIs ‘took it in the shorts’ a polite way of saying ‘took it in the rear’?
June 12th, 2009 at 12:52 pmJust askin’.
Part of being a Republican, always blame others for your own mistakes.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:54 pmIt sounds like Boehner wants a do over. Sorry Boehner but those votes of his empowered Bush to do the things that he did. Besides, it was just before the DC fatal shooting that Boehner was out there inciting just that type of activity. Has he retracted those inciteful words yet? No, Boehner has been front and center with the policy decisions he now says is responsible. A lot of us out there were predicting exactly what would happen as a result of those policices, but not John Boehner so no dice.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:55 pmBoner admitting ANYTHING? Admitting responsibility for incompetence?
ha ha
I suppose he now wants some forgiveness. I’ll forgive you, John Boner, as soon as you resign. You’re a useless piece of human dreck, dude.
June 12th, 2009 at 12:57 pmBoner…Man with the Tan in $2,500 suits, representing a State that’s been hit so hard with manufacturing moving overseas to maximize profits and reduce union / labor costs they’re withering on the vine.

June 12th, 2009 at 1:04 pmThat is fun-nee, teabaggers taking it in the shorts. HAHAHAHAHA
Embrace the teabag.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:04 pmInteresting how one of the Bush/Cheney champions who dutifully followed in lockstep with them for years has now jumped on the “bash Bush” bandwagon.
Yes — the Bush/Cheney administration damaged our country and our government in ways that will take years to fix. But it’s the Republican Party itself that allowed itself to be taken over by neocons (while kicking moderates out of the tent), and enabled (and championed!) their criminal behavior at every turn.
I do not weep for Boehner or any of the other GOP enablers. But the good thing is that Boehner now realizes that the Republican Party has a problem. And recognizing a problem is the first step toward doing something about it.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:04 pmI’m not so sure he’s blaming Bush and Cheney. I think he’s just listing the messes that the GOP has been associated with and what they need to spin in order to make the GOP sterling clean.
If that’s the case, he’s admitting that they need a whole bunch of white-out to fix their problems.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:05 pm.
Note to Boehner:
It couldn’t have been done without your support.
.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:05 pmYou’re confusing “debt” with “deficit”.
The National Debt is the accumulated money owed by the federal government to other entities (doubled during the Bush 43 administration)
The federal deficit or surplus is the yearly balance sheet for the federal budget. Bill Clinton’s last four budgets ran in the black. George W. Bush took that last surplus and flushed it down the toilet.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:06 pmHow interesting that Susan Boyle recorded a song fit for Boehner back in 1999.

June 12th, 2009 at 1:14 pmI thought Jackson was the last person to pay off Americas debt back in the 1800’s…. what surplus?
Indeed, a confusing concept. During the Clinton years, we were projected to be generating surpluses in current period budgets. That, of course, was before eight years of GDumbya spending like a drunken sailor, starting wars and just generally being incompetent.
Today, the republicans conveniently ignore that fact and focus instead upon future projected deficits and immediately conclude that they are real deficits that have already been incurred. Of course, those projections are “worst-case” scenarios and reflect future costs on the basis of current policy.
The fact of the matter is that future deficits (and, it follows, future cumulative debt) will be subject to changes in policy. For instance, if GDumbya’s tax reduction for the wealthy lapse as scheduled, the deficit will go down. If Obama accelerates withdrawal of troops from Iraq, the deficit will go down. Etc., etc.
What is unfortunate about Boehner and the rest of the elected and unelected mealy-mouths on the right wing is that they have no constructive ideas to offer and they have no political or patriotic motivation to be part of the solution rather than being “the problem” as they have for the past decade or more.

Don’t count on it. repugs sway with the wind.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:19 pmBoehner is counting on the short term memory of the public as he fingerpoints any blame away from himself. Or perhaps his own short term memory is at fault here (alcohol can do that).
June 12th, 2009 at 1:21 pmIn any case, the unethical republican is refusing to accept any responsibilty or accountability for his strong defense of Bush&Co for 8 years.
Typical republican hypocrisy.
Typical juvenile (Eddie Haskell) reply of “don’t look at me! I didn’t do anything! The other guys did it!! Wah! Wah! Wah! Why am I being punished?”
so why does it feel like the republican playbook is just the democratic playbook with a 6 month delay.
Black male makes it to the top of the dem party, gop puts up a black male. A woman makes it almost to the top, so they put a woman as vp candidate. And then the whole phony outrage about fed spending (and the teabaggers didnt say much about healthcare spending or defense spending so you know its phony) Then came the calls to reach out to youth through that, there, ethernet. so that makes it about the right time in the gop book to start bashing the former administration.
gop aint gonna get ahead by trying to play catch up.
Also, looks like history is off to a good start treating bush kindly. They sure called that one (sarcasm)
June 12th, 2009 at 1:28 pmAnd the Repukes 100% support of every lie and bad policy decision put out by Bush/Cheney had nothing to do with it?
June 12th, 2009 at 1:28 pmA Flipper
A Flopper
Boehner pulls a whopper.
And I’m not talking about his “in the shorts” comment.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:29 pmIf anyone caught Whitehouse’s speech the other night or his bit on Rachel last night, this makes sense. The process is slowly in and I see Bush and Cheney and company becoming more isolated. Any MOC, Republican in particular, with hopes of ever being elected again will be following the Boner in this. Only the true believers will remain faithful.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:33 pmslowly closing in. Sheesh
June 12th, 2009 at 1:34 pmI find it hilarious that these guys are trying to distance themselves from Bush/Cheney when they supported them every step of the way. The American public isn’t going to buy it. They know who caused the mess this country is in and it wasn’t just the Bush Crime Family. They could not have done what they did without the unconditional support of the Republic party.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:37 pmskarecro Says:

They are not talking about America’s debt, they are talking about the budget surplus. It’s not surprising that you don’t know the difference.
At the end of Clinton term we had a $186 billion surplus for our federal deficit but a $5.2 trillion national debt.
At the end of Bush’s term we’ll have about a $485 billion deficit for our federal deficit and a $10.2 trillion national debt.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:40 pmpoor poor widdle johnny boehner. the dems took over and now he has to suck hind tit. at least he admits it now. he is soooo jealous that he has turned a combination of orange and dogshit brown with envy.
June 12th, 2009 at 1:44 pmThree phases of the 21st century decline and fall of the depraved Republican Party:
1. Goosestepping right along with the Bush gangster regime and all their criminality. Supporting Bush, Cheney and Rumsfeld’s torture, treason and tyranny from Jan. 2001 to Jan. 2009.
2. After falling out of power in the November 2008 Elections, the Republicans become the Party of No and the Goofy Obstructionist Party.
3. Six months after losing their dictatorial powers of the Bush White House, right-wing extremist Republicans start a campaign of domestic terrorism by murdering a doctor and a policeman.

That’s about it, actually.
OH NO Boehner – you didn’t take anything in the shorts being the enabler. Americans are taking it in the a$$ with no vaseline! If this guy thinks he’s getting any sympathy, he’d better think again. Why don’t we just apply the same rule to politicians? Especially the ones with that (R) after their names?
Just think of it: The news day would be shorter, we’d only have to sort through the misinformation democrats are trying to feed to the public, and my blood pressure would decrease by about 10 points.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:13 pmRep. Boner claims that Republicans are “digging themselves out of a deep hole.” Wrong again, Mr. Boner; Republicans are digging themselves into a deeper hole, with their obstructions, their smears against Sotomayor, their support of Bush torture, their kissing up to the insane Limbaugh, their use of Diebold voting machines to electronically hack, rig and steal elections in 2002 and 2004 and their unwillingness to man up to their total support of the Bush dictatorship for eight years.

June 12th, 2009 at 2:20 pmSo many angles to this.
So is this an admission that the repubs stood by and watched the country go to h-double-hockey-sticks because they put their party about country ? Wouldn’t this border on treason if they collaberated in this ?
How does this affect Georgies belief that he will be vindicated if he can’t even get his own party to recognize his charisma ?
June 12th, 2009 at 2:33 pmWe took it in the shorts with Bush-Cheney, the Iraq War, and by sacrificing fiscal responsibility to hold power.”
Um, no. Americans realized after the two terms of Nixon, Reagan and Bush, that conservatives always sacrifice fiscal responsibility when they come into power. The first two might have been anomalies, but Bush’s spendthrift manner was the clincher. Three strikes, and you’re out.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:37 pmWhat can Boehner possibly mean by the phrase “took it in the shorts”? I’ve never heard that phrase in all of my long life. It must be some code phrase that only the Repugnants use and understand.
June 12th, 2009 at 2:45 pmI don’t blame Bush and Cheny for this mess any more. There are tens of thousands of Bush/Cheneys out there. I blame the people who vote to put them in public office.

It is 8 years too late for an epiphany. And this won’t stop Boehner, et al, from doing the same thing when Jeb Bush runs for President. The Republicans are so beholden to the Bush family but I can’t figure out why.

And he — who surely would have possessed at least some influence within his party as House Minority Leader — chose not to do anything about Bush and Cheney while they were in office because…?
This is just one more example of Republican/conservative “do as I say, not as I do”. Conservatives and Republicans are mighty fond of pontificating on the importance of “personal responsibility” — being accountable for one’s own choices and facing the consequences thereof — but when their own choices come around to bite them in the backside, they don’t hesitate to pass the buck and blame other people for their own misfortune. Boehner and his fellow Republicans were not exactly helpless victims here — anything but, in fact. They could have always taken a stand against Bush and demanded that he be more circumspect, or even agreed to impeachment proceedings if he refused to listen. But no-o-o-o-o-o…they decided that expediency and party loyalty were more important than the needs of the country, which is almost certainly why the Republicans suffered losses in both the 2006 and 2008 elections.

June 12th, 2009 at 3:24 pmHow can a man who voted ‘Yes’ for every piece of legistlation that he was asked to vote on by Bush & Cheney, now blaming Bush and Cheney for Republicans failures.
Either Boehner did not know what he was voting on, or he is refusing to take reponsibility for his voting actions.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:33 pmEither way ..he is a big phony loser.
I can’t really find the words to describe how I feel that Boehner is saying something sensible. I’m from Ohio so we have to put up with his idiotic actions on a deeper level. He has been an embarrassment to our state. I have a tendency to believe what I read on another post is that he is just trying to cover his own ass over the voting that took place with Bush/Cheney. It will take a lot more common sense from this goof before I am convinced.
June 12th, 2009 at 3:43 pmIf your Boehner lasts longer than 4 hours seek the help of a medical professional…is there a Dr. in the house?!?
June 12th, 2009 at 4:52 pmWhy the 85% of those of us who don’t support Boehner have to be accosted with his fringe views? As long as Democrats act like the spew from Boehner and Cantor matter to anyone but the right-wing racist fringe, they will never realize their full potential.
June 12th, 2009 at 6:48 pmI’m still stuck on “took it in the shorts”. Arresting expression, is it not? The Republican party appears to be fixated on potty issues and buttsecs.
June 12th, 2009 at 7:08 pmCan someone answer this off-topic question for me since jeeves cant?
Is it like a psycho/sociological trick to speak in the manner these guys do? I noticed gonzales, cheney, boehner, rumsfeld, and most notably, jr did this. When answering questions, they furrow their brow, pull back the very sides of their mouths, and squint.
Is this some kind of lawyer/legal poker face? Or is this just the “I’m condescending you while performing illegal nightmares, the scales of which will be hard to conceive for years” face.

June 13th, 2009 at 1:26 am“Taking it in the shorts” seems to imply to me that the Executive Branch pulled a fast one on you, John, or somehow delivered a low blow.
No, John, you and the rest of the GOP sycophants (and a few Dems as well) in Congress voluntarily subjugated yourselves to the Executive Branch and, in the process, failed to fulfill your constitutional duty both in spirit and law. Perhaps even more shocking and pathetic is the fact that the impotence on the part of GOP legislators was not isolated and brief rather they regularly abdicated their check and balance role over the course of and 8 year period. Likewise, they utilized the House Floor, the Senate Well, media outlets, etc. to often defend Bush and attack any dissension.
Not surprisingly, you selfishly note that “we’re (i.e. the GOP) digging ourselves out of a deep hole” while callously forgetting that the entire nation lies in the “deep hole” as well while incurring far greater detriment than the “loss of seats” or bad approval ratings.
John, you didn’t lose power following the 08′ election. You never exercised it in the first place.
