George H.W. Bush condemns right-wing attacks on Sotomayor: Those ‘radical’ statements are ‘not right.’

George H.W. Bush Today in an interview with CNN, President George H.W. Bush condemned the right-wing attacks on Supreme Court nominee Sonia Sotomayor. Specifically, he took issue with the assertion that Sotomayor is “racist,” which has been made by Newt Gingrich, Tom Tancredo, and Rush Limbaugh:

I don’t know her that well but I think she’s had a distinguished record on the bench and she should be entitled to fair hearings. Not – [it's] like the senator John Cornyn said it,” he told CNN. “He may vote for it, he may not. But he’s been backing away from these…backing off from those radical statements to describe her, to attribute things to her that may or may not be true.

And she was called by somebody a racist once. That’s not right. I mean that’s not fair. It doesn’t help the process. You’re out there name-calling. So let them decide who they want to vote for and get on with it.”

In 1991, Bush nominated Sotomayor as a judge for the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, making her “the youngest judge in the Southern District of New York and the first Hispanic federal judge in the state.”

Way to jump in to defend the judge you once nominated, Poppy, as soon as the right wing decided that their opposition was doomed.

i would be surprised if Bush Sr. apologized to Rush. say what you will about his tenure as president, but in comparison to the two boobs who just left office, he’s managed to hold onto his dignity pretty well.

    Now there’s a sight you don’t see everyday… a Republican with a brain. Good for Bush 41.

i wouldn’t rule that out. is it more preposterous for rush to argue that bush sr isn’t a conservative than it is for him to argue that a white supremecist/militia-type is inspired by left-wing propaganda?

I don’t know about you guys, but I don’t ever want to see a Bush family memeber again. After what Bush Jr. did to this country, I wish they would fade away into the backround.

Nah. This hopefully is shaping up as a neo/paleocon grudgematch, because the Paleos have become fed up with being marginalized within the party.

  14. Roket says:

Careful there #41. You run the risk of having imprecatory prayers cast against you, by those God fearing Xtianists that you so lovingly manipulated.

When the Bush family represents the only sanity and civility, this extremist party’s minority status is settling in for a good long time.

The master of the non-apology apology (I’m sorry if I offended any pussie who couldn’t handle the truth…) now turns his hand to the non-prohibitive prohibition: “He may vote for it, he may not. But he’s been backing away from these…backing off from those radical statements to describe her, to attribute things to her that may or may not be true.”

Cannot bring himself to just say it, he’s gotta hedge.

GHWB has probably killed people, personally, so it probably cannot be said that he is ‘gutless.’ But he seems never to have retrieved his manhood from the blind-trust he deposited in when he went to wet-nurse Raygun…

  17. delafield says:

It’s very, very unusual for a Republican, like Bush, to defend a non-caucasian. Rush Limbaugh isn’t going to like this.

GHWB has to live with Babs, in comparison to which, the rest of his punishments are infinitissemal…it’s all the comfort I can take, and it isn’t enough, but whathehell

  19. J. Fred Smug says:

Note that he did not say this on FOX News. It seems that whenever someone in the GOP decides it’s time to tell an uncomfortable truth, they turn to one of the other networks in order to minimize the fallout.

    Dear Mister President Bush,

Too bad that you didn’t “pull it out” in time to save us the misery of eight long years of torture, treason and tyranny under the misrule of your miserable offspring.

Anyone else seeing #41’s parachute jump today as a little more of the competition between him and #43?

As for Sotomayor, since he nominated her in the past, he must defend her today — whereas Dumbya has to keep a low profile and pray he doesn’t get indicted, much less have a word to say about judges, considering what happened to the DoJ under his administration.

  26. Buckie Boy says:

Sorry, Bush Senior, but the Republican Party has morphed into the Republic Fascist Party of Bigotry, Hate, Corruption, War Criminals, and Racists, who lie, threaten, steal, kill and terrorize the country.

Good luck with trying to bring them back into the real world, they are at present – psychoic.

    Fcuk the Republic Fascist Party

The recent footage that has come out of Congress of Sotomayor saying she is a product of affirmative action, is making the GOP thik that they finally got something on her.

Watch this clip and read this post to see that they are actually validating affirmative action by revealing this this footage.

Check out this post from another progressive blog, where Hannity and the GOP think they finally found they missing piece that is going to bury Sotomayor. After reading this article, they are doing the exact opposite.

A Republican wasn’t doing his job? I don’t see a problem there, at least not a logical problem.

  30. krystalview says:

Do you think the republicans will even ADMIT to this incompetence? HA!

  31. Hoodathunktick says:

I’ll take any Republican calling for rationality and civility. Even an old fart. In fact, the old guard should step up and smack the latest nasty critters down and tell them to behave.

Wonder if Papa Bush called limbaugh on his birthday this year ? Boy, first little mealy mouth laura praising Sotomayer and now Papa Bush, maybe the sky is falling.

  33. The Angry Republican says:

    Hey guys,

Not that this is pertinent to the article but I wanted to point this out for the trolls :)

Pappa Bush has held his voice and criticism of his loser son and how he has mucked up the Country long enough.

Get ready for a whole string of comments…I can feel them bubbling out of him hehehehe…

Baby Bush didn’t even show up today for Pappas 85th Birthday party where he of all things…tandem skydived out of a plane.

Love or hate Bush Sr. at 85 that was a nervy thing to do.
So was speaking out in support of Sotamayer.

Run and hide little cockroaches run and hide…

    Cue Limbaugh apology 3 2 1…

I think it’d be impossible to find a non-white/male at that age who was not a product of affirmative action. If it weren’t for affirmative action, the only qualified people would still be 100% white/male. That was kind of the entire point.

Colin Powell is also a product of affirmative action. So’s Michael Steele.

Besides, it matters a lot less how she got into college than how she did by graduation.

  35. The Angry Republican says:

    Oh please,

She qualified the entire affirmative action statement already…
Yes it probably HELPED her get into IVY league School but then she specifically states that she EARNED her grades herself…

So she was an affirmative action applicant…so what…she graduated SUMMA CUM-LAUDE Not many can say that…

  36. MapleStreet says:

Let me add to 36, I believe that she graudated 2nd in her class.

This as opposed to the rich kids that got in because daddy could donate money to the school – and then barely squeaked through.

What Papa Bush is telling the GOP is that Obama is on the very same mission as the Neocons, the New World Order, and all that rot. Many of the GOP don’t even notice they are on the same team on the forever wars of terror.
