ThinkProgress’s Amanda Terkel goes on MSNBC and weighs in on the Palin-Letterman fight.
This morning, ThinkProgress’s Amanda Terkel and Sabrina Schaeffer of the Independent Women’s Forum went on MSNBC to talk about the controversy between comedian David Letterman and Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R). Both Terkel and Schaeffer said that Letterman’s jokes were inappropriate, but added that Palin should turn back to policy issues and not dwell on this controversy for too long. While Schaeffer said that there was a different standard for conservative and liberal women, Terkel pointed out that President Clinton’s daughter, Chelsea, was also the target of frequent attacks (e.g. Rush Limbaugh calling her the “White House dog” when she was 13 years old). June 13th, 2009 at 11:57 amLetterman apologized and agreed that the jokes were in poor taste. Palin, on the other hand, should acknowledge that she has been using and exploiting her children (including a special needs baby) ever since McCain had a brain fart and, in a move I’m sure he meant to be taken as “mavericky”, picked her as his running mate. If she truly believed that her children should have been off-limits, then she should not have kept bringing them into the spotlight. That’s the way it works in politics.
Furthermore, Letterman’s jokes, no matter what Palin might choose to believe (since we all know she can ignore the truth with the worst of them), were about Bristol, not her 14-year-old daughter. Palin should stop claiming otherwise, since there is no way she could know for a fact that what she believes Letterman really meant is true (since it isn’t.)
And when the Palins decided to let their teen-age daughter go out and promote abstinence, when it clearly didn’t work in her case, they gave up any right to an expectation that Bristol would not be the subject of jokes. If the Palins are still offended and bothered by this, it’s because they are choosing to remain offended and bothered by this.

Let’s not forget that in 1986 Senator John McCain made a joke about a woman getting raped by a gorilla and his 1998 joke about Janet Reno being Chelsea Clintin’s father.
June 13th, 2009 at 12:04 pmThe only way I can describe Palin’s behavior is a full-fledged hissy fit. I saw the Today Show interview and thought she came across as a spoiled, arrogant, snotty child. She brought this situation on herself by taking every chance to promote her reality show, “Sarah and Todd Plus Five (or Six).” You can’t put yourself in the public eye and than poke that eye for watching.

Sarah is the one who brought her children into the limelight with her, from her unwed daughter to her special needs baby — if she didn’t want the spotlight on them, she should have kept them home and ordered the press away. She chose, however, to exploit them for her own purposes and now that a joke was made about the unwed daughter, they have blown it up into both daughters, and all girls of America.
The joke was also about “knocked up” and not about rape. And nowhere in the joke or monologue did Letterman say anything suggesting what the Palins have suggested.
This is quite typical of repugs who can dish it out, but can’t take it.

There’s another big difference. The Clintons did not use Chelsea as a prop on the campaign trail and put her in front of TV cameras every chance they got.
The Palins made their children into fair game by pimping them for political gain.

In addition when David Shuster got reprimanded for making a comment that the Clintons were pimping Chelsea during the primaries most of us felt that the reprimand was unwarranted.

I don’t remember how they reacted, but I can guarantee it wasn’t with the kind of hissy fit the Palins are throwing. If they really cared about their children and what people say about them, their reaction should have been “that was uncalled for and not funny” and then they should have left it alone. But, the Palins seem to be so publicity hungry they can’t miss a chance to be in the limelight, even if it makes them look like the fools they are.

She’s responsible for the majority of the offensive language in this saga.
Of course, if it was the other way around, like with Rush Limbaugh, most people would just say, “Well, that’s Rush for ya.”
If I had the chance to interview Palin, I’d take along band-aids for her thin skin and an ice pack for her swollen ego.

In case anyone shows up trying to defend Rush on this one, let’s get he facts out there. Rush claims that a technician put up the wrong picture. (Sean Hannity says he absolutely believes Rush on this one.) The problem with that excuse is that the show in question was on tape, not live. So if the “wrong picture” was put up, why didn’t hey just stop tape and put the “right picture” up? And even if you still accept that excuse, then what should the “right picture” have been? Where was the joke without a picture of Chelsea in there?
I just wanted to get those facts out there, in case a troll (or some other Republican member of Congress) shows up to defend Rush.

The hypocrisy of boasting family values without living them IS funny.
Now, I notice none of you Palin defenders are addressing Rush’s comments about Chelsea Clinton. She was a young girl who had done nothing but was attacked for her looks. Where was your outrage then? What Letterman said was in poor taste. The man apologized and adults accept apologies. Speaking as a woman who has been a victim of sexual abuse, I did not see any reference to it in Letterman’s joke. She’s just conflating it for political gain and that’s sick.
I make no excuse for what Letterman said but at least he offered an apology and was willing to discuss it with the Palin family. Regardless of whether she put her children out there or not she could at least be a lady for once and accept the apology. She’s acting like a whiny little brat.

I would think that admitting bad taste would be enough for most people. To keep on fighting after the other person has conceded is… in bad taste. I think anybody that makes sexist jokes should apologize. That includes Limbaugh and Coulter. Limbaugh was completely out of line for his comments when he compared Bill Clinton’s daughter to a dog and he should have apologized. This does not mean Letterman should get a free pass. What he said was horrible.

Why does what O’Reilly said or did in this instance make any difference with what Letterman did? What you are trying to do is change the subject. The subject here is that Letterman made horrible comments about Palin and her daughter and he has not apologized. O’Reilly has nothing to do with this.

JohnM, I have to agree with you here. I admit that I have not followed this whole thing (nor do I care much about it), but I did see Dave’s ‘apology’ and noticed the same thing you did. While I have no doubt that he was sincere in what he did say by way of apology, I also don’t think that it helped that Dave’s audience laughed at his words, making him seem less sincere by their reaction.
I know that I’m in the minority on this one, but I can’t help it.

What Letterman said was wrong but what John McCain was even more wrong and McCain went on to be the Republican standard bearer in 2008 who picked Palin to be his running mate.

I consider what he did an apology. He replayed all of the offensive statements he had made, and denounced them. The problem with what you people do is that you insist somebody say the exact words you insist they say. That never works. Once you demand exactly what word you will accept, the argument stops becoming “good faith” and is clearly nothing more than bullying. You should take a response in the spirit it was given; if you refuse to, then it’s you who’s being crass at that point.
All Palin really cares about now is “controlling news cycles.” That didn’t work for McCain either.

Not gonna happen. They won’t even go as far as Letterman did. They would never highlight what they said in the past that was inappropriate. But you keep the pressure on… yeah, right.
June 14th, 2009 at 12:06 amOk, I have to put my 2 cents in too. I thought Dave’s joke was over the line. I absolutely believe he meant the joke about Bristol and not Willow, but even so I don’t care for jokes about children in that manner. I also understand the notion that Palin brought this on herself by parading her kids in the spotlight almost constantly. However, I don’t think that makes it ok to take shots at them. Kids can’t help how stupid their parent’s are (and my God are these particular parents stupid!) Anyone who’s watched Letterman consistently knows he would never make such a joke about a 14 year old girl. I was pretty suprised he would do so about Bristol even. He did apologize and Palin should have accepted it and been done with it. Of course everyone knows they don’t give two sh*ts about the actual joke and want to bombard us with weeks of idiotic righteous indignation.
On a side note, did you all see Palin’s interview with Matt Lauer? When he asked her if she was the frontrunner for the GOP she told him “Absolutely not necessarily”! She’s a walking, talking SNL skit! Unbelievable..

The difference is, Reagan was dealing with a strong Democratic majority in Congress, so he couldn’t go completely batshit crazy like today’s Republicans.
