Hatch bristles over criticisms that he’s at fault for problems of the Bush years: ‘Don’t you believe that B.S.’

hatchbush Yesterday at Utah’s GOP convention, the state’s two U.S. senators — Orrin Hatch (R) and Bob Bennett (R) received only “polite receptions,” compared to the boisterous applause received by some of the state’s representatives. From the Deseret News:

Hatch, at one point in his speech, appeared upset when some delegates applauded as a way of blaming national Republicans, himself included, for the deficit and other problems of the Bush years.

“Don’t you believe that B.S.,” Hatch said loudly. But some of the 1,800 delegates clearly did.

While many delegates stood and applauded the longtime incumbents (Hatch 33 years, Bennett 15 years), others sat on their hands — not booing, but showing their disapproval through silence.

Many attendees also expressed displeasure with Gov. John Huntsman (R), who has agreed to become President Obama’s ambassador to China. GOP party chair Jude Law said that Huntman’s endorsement of civil unions “mocks God.” (HT: Huffington Post)

So how does supporting civil unions mock god again? Is it in the same way that gay marriage is a threat to nongay marriage?

That’s great that the GOP chair in Utah is so tuned in to what God wants. What does God say about torture? Or executing mentally disabled people? Or making up reasons to go to war? Or fleecing the poor to lavish the spoils on the rich? Probably likes those, huh?

Well if Mr. Hatch cares to debate the subject, then how about a commission selected to investigate if the repuglicans were in fact not responsible for the problems caused by 8 years of Bu$h doing his thing without any Congressional oversight. OT again, but since there’s no thinkfast on the weekend I’ll put it here.

I have posted before about the Minutemen who killed a Hispanic father and daughter in Arizona. I thought that it being reported on a weekend was kind of suspicious considering the other right wing extremist hate crimes committed recently. Then when I re-read the article at Huffington post I noticed this:

The trio are alleged to have dressed as law enforcement officers and forced their way into a home about 10 miles north of the Mexican border in rural Arivaca on May 30, wounding a woman and fatally shooting her husband and their 9-year-old daughter. Their motive was financial, Dupnik said.

One has to wonder why reporting a crime that happened on May 30 was suppressed for 14 days. So I checked. This crime was committed on the same day that Dr. Tiller was shot. I wonder if the press purposely withheld reporting on this or if it just got pushed out because of the Tiller murder. Either way, it’s another hate crime perpetuated by right wing extremists. When is it going to stop?

What exactly did the “democrat filled congress” do between January 2007 and September 2008 to “start this mess”?

Can you point to any particular legislation passed and signed by President Bush that might have “started this mess”?

Thanks for your prompt reply. As a student of history, I like to know what happened and why. Your answer will help.

Civil unions “mock God”??? It amazes me that these GOP wingnuts believe in God, but also believe they know everything God says, thinks, or believes. How blasphemous these Repubs have become. I suspect God thinks very favorably of the Democrats, since they share Jesus’ beliefs in caring about all races, empathy, helping others, & speaking out against hatred, violence & war. And Democrats don’t pretend to speak for God. Repubs, on the other hand, with their war & hate-mongering, their sexism, their bigotry, their constant lies (daily), their promotion of executions, war, & exclusion of anyone who doesn’t fit their mold— well, I think God must really be questioning how hypocritical right-wingers are about the true meaning of love, peace, & values. They live to promote lies & hatred. How is that what Jesus would want?

They didn’t target this family because they wanted to stop drug dealing. Sounds more like they were targeted because they were non-Anglo and had something worth stealing.

  55. The Moderate Squad says:

This is from Hatch’s own Web site from May 26th, 2001

WASHINGTON – Sen. Orrin Hatch today praised passage of the sweeping $1.35 trillion tax cut package as the best bill for children and families in years.

“The Senate should be extremely proud of this bipartisan bill and the long hours that were put into forging a compromise,” Hatch said on the Senate floor. “There are 16 million more children who directly benefit from this bill as a result of the bipartisan compromise. This the best bill for children and families that I have seen in years.”

But Hatch noted that the legislation did not contain everything he originally wanted. “This conference report is not perfect, just as no political compromise is perfect,” Hatch continued. “I, like many of my colleagues, would have greatly preferred a larger tax cut of at least $1.6 trillion…”

Considering how many sources of late have analysed the data and put the lion’s share of the blame for our current economic woes squarely on the shoulders of the GOP tax cuts and voluntary war in Iraq, just what is it that Hatch considers B.S.? He was a top cheerleader for the Bush Bankrupting America Bill….

Quite frankly, I can’t stand any Repugs anymore.

  80. The Moderate Squad says:

This is from the same story the HP piece quoted from the Deseret News:

“A few GOP leaders feared a hostile reception (there was none, as outgoing state party chairman Stan Lockhart told the hall not to boo anyone), and steps were made in scheduling and placement to blunt incivility.”

In other words, there was hostility, but between the stern warnings not to boo (like we used to get during basketball games in grammar school) and jiggering the schedule to make sure someone at least nominally popular was put between two imbeciles – like Hatch and Bennett – the event came off with at least the appearance of civility.

Hell, if the GOP could do this in Congress (or Fox Noise), maybe they wouldn’t be so completely reviled outside the borders of Wingnuttia.

  81. Bluestocking says:

Hatch, at one point in his speech, appeared upset when some delegates applauded as a way of blaming national Republicans, himself included, for the deficit and other problems of the Bush years.

“Don’t you believe that B.S.,” Hatch said loudly.

    ********************************************************

Ironic, isn’t it, how much Republicans love to pontificate on the importance of taking “personal responsibility” for one’s actions and accepting the consequences thereof — yet to all appearances, refuse to do so themselves?

These days, whenever a Republican politician is confronted regarding a decision with which he/she was involved that was ethically questionable and/or of dubious benefit, the response inevitably follows a common theme:

    “Not me…not my fault…don’t blame me…nothing to do with me…I don’t recall…I never did/said that…I didn’t do anything wrong…nobody could possibly have predicted…it’s all Clinton’s/the Democrats’/the liberal media’s fault…you just don’t love America/don’t support the troops!!”

Even if Hatch could not be said to have contributed directly to the crisis we’re in, he nonetheless inevitably contributed indirectly by doing very little of anything — or at the very least, certainly not doing enough — to rein in the Bush administration. He, like Boehner, may be trying to distance himself from Bush now for the sake of political expediency — but at far as I am aware, he made no effort whatsoever to do so while it counted.

The trouble with attempts to excuse oneself with “do as I say and not as I do”, of course, is that people don’t see any reason why they should do what you tell them they should do when you apparently don’t see it as being crucial or valuable enough to do yourself. I’m not saying that Democrats never do it themselves, mind you — because they do — but then again, they’re not the ones who are always trying to portray themselves as being the party of “family/Christian/ traditional values”, either.

What’s a Republican party chair (Jude Law?!?) doing giving opinions on God anyways? I thought they were supposed to be politicians, not theologians. I mean, technically anyway. — ElBruce

    **********************************************************

Ah, but that’s what’s a lot of Republicans these days are like, dontcha know. Their deep and abiding distrust of academic — which they believe to be a bastion of liberalism — has led them to believe that people can’t possibly be learning much in graduate school that the average layperson couldn’t figure out using simple common sense (despite the fact that common sense isn’t actually all that common). They think that belief and knowledge are one and the same, when they aren’t even really synonymous. People like this think that they’re experts on everything including such diverse subjects as religion and history and climate change, simply because they want these things to be true. They think that faith is more important than facts, so they think that the strength of their beliefs and opinions automatically makes them true — which, of course, means that they must be true for everyone, because they’re convinced that their own experience is the only possible gold standard for what’s good and right and proper and normal.

We need to get something passed that limits the terms of ALL Congressional personnel. There needs to be term limits of 10 years for ALL congressional personnel.

Hatch needs to be replaced. He is so entrenched and long in the tooth, that he has long since stopped representing his state. He only represents his party, which is not the same thing.

No one should be allowed to stay that long. It is not supposed to be a lifetime job. After awhile they claim squatters rights for the office. Now of course it will be too late for him to get a real job. He does not remember what it is like to work on the outside of government. He has his SOCIALIST PERKS. The ones the Republicans don’t want us to have. Free health and dental care. A non breakable money back guarantee on his retirement etc. We don’t have that out here, no matter how much time we work. It is all up for grabs as to whether even our pensions survive. These legislators come in as often or as seldom as they like.

He is partially at fault. They all are. They all kept quiet during the rape of the Constitution, the spending and losing of billions for the war, the money stolen by contractors for the war, and the demise of the financial markets. All was quiet on the western front.

And all the noise they now make about EVERY SINGLE THING that Obama does, and I mean everything, they should have made the same when Bush made this mess. Now they find a collective voice they did not have before. Nice try Hatch.

i see here there is no such thing as a liberal christian. you can’t be a conservative without being a christian. its ludacris on both counts. i belive in GOD. JESUS is my savior. if that makes me crazy or some type of lunatic,oh well so be it.everyone who says LORD,LORD are often misled and off track. the LORD said my sheep hear MY VOICE. now if you hear HIS voice you’ll obey and keep HIS statues. love the LORD GOD with all your heart strenth and mind. this is where the rubber meets the road;love my nieghbor as myself. you can use GOD with fancy words to gain advantage. it always catches up to you. gay marriage homosexuality i belive it to be sin just like lying, adultery, stealing and fornication. do i have the right to not love that person and treat him/her according to JESUS teachings. no i do not. were all hypocrites to so point but are you working to become more like CHRIST. you may never look like JESUS twin. however, you can have a startling resemblence. your actions paint the picture and tell the story. i see our country being torn apart by greed, power, graft and riotous living. its on both sides of the political isle and we as americans share more responsibility than were willing to accept. were all to blame. some more than others. if were going to fix it we have to come together. shouting insults at each other fixes nothing. some civilized conversations would be a terrific start.

I agree completely — however, as much as I hate to say it, I very much doubt that it will ever happen. Congressional term limits would almost certainly have to be established through Constitutional amendment, just as Presidential term limits were. Unfortunately, our Founding Fathers only gave us two official ways of amending the Constitution — and one of those requires a Congressional majority vote! I think we all know the only majority that any bill put before Congress would be likely to receive if it proposed limits on their own powers would be in favor of its defeat. In fact, it might very well trigger one of the few wholly unanimous votes in the entire history of Congress…so that pretty much scotches that possibility.

If my understanding is correct, the second official means through which the Constitution may be amended would be a call for a Constitutional Convention by a two-thirds majority of all state legislatures — that is, two-thirds of all the state legislatures agree that such a Convention should be called. The trouble with this is that since a good many state representatives hope to serve one day in Congress, it seems at least somewhat unlikely that a majority of them would vote in favor of a measure which they have reason to believe is an attempt to limit what they hope will be their future powers! (Neither Congress nor the state legislature should be a lifetime appointment. Unfortunately, the lack of term limits at any level inevitably means that the people supposedly chosen to represent us are politicians first and foremost — meaning, they are easily tempted to focus on whatever they need to do to stay in power rather than what they need to do to serve the people.) Additionally, even if a two-thirds majority vote were achieved and enough American voters agreed to the measure, the fact remains that such a Convention has never been called before. Since our Founding Fathers apparently did not think to give us instructions on exactly how this should be carried out logistically, it seems highly probable that this would provoke a lot of political bickering beforehand — perhaps some of it even deliberate, with the intended aim of stalling the process indefinitely. During that time, if one or more state legislatures were to undergo a power shift in terms of party majority, it does not seem impossible that a new vote could be cast overturning the call for a Convention — which would be enough to send the whole process back to square one if the two-thirds majority hinged on as little as one state.

There is no such thing as a decent conservative. You cant be a conservative without being a brainwashed moron who posts staggeringly ignorant tripe like you did. You are stupid. You are a punk. You are a poser and you are a liar and a fool. Just STFU and stop embarassing REAL religious people.

dieselis, I guess since I don’t condone torture, don’t covet my neighbor’s wife and belongings, don’t screw the poor, don’t attack others who have done nothing to me, don’t condone murder, and don’t ostracize others because they don’t believe in my ‘god’ then no, I am not your type of ‘christian’ and thank ‘god’ for that. If you do truly love Jesus as you profess, you should be ashamed of yourself. You used the word hypocrite. You should know the definition because you fit it. Try reading Matthew as you have obviously no clue as to who Jesus was. Jesus was a LIBERAL.

And just for you information, I am an atheist and I would be willing to bet I know a HELL of a lot more about scripture than you do.
