Kyl: Who cares if Europe doesn’t like Guantanamo, they didn’t like when we invaded Iraq either.

On CSPAN’s Newsmakers today, Sen. Jon Kyl (R-AZ) attacked President Obama’s efforts to close the prison at Guantanamo Bay. “The real question is why do it and the only answer is, ‘well, it’s a symbol,’” said Kyl, adding that “the terrorists don’t need Guantanamo to figure out that they don’t like the United States.” When the host noted that Guantanamo “has been an issue in Europe, among leaders, our allies,” Kyl replied, “big deal.” “They didn’t like the fact that we invaded Iraq and replaced Saddam Hussein either.” Watch it:

Considering that the decision to invade Iraq ultimately “made the American people less secure,” Kyl shouldn’t be so dismissive of those who said from the start that it was a mistake. Likewise with Guantanamo Bay. Kyl dismisses the negative symbolic power of Guantanamo, but as the Center for Strategic & International Studies concluded in September 2008, “the United States has been damaged by Guantánamo beyond any immediate security benefits. Our enemies have achieved a propaganda windfall that enables recruitment to violence, while our friends have found it more difficult to cooperate with us.”

Transcript:

KYL: So, the real question is why do it. And the only answer is, “well, it’s a symbol.” A symbol of what? The terrorists don’t need Guantanamo to figure out that they don’t like the United States. Guantanamo didn’t even exist before 9/11 and yet you had the attack on the Cole, the Khobar towers, the African embassy bombings, the first World Trade Center, the 9/11. Terrorists have all kinds of reasons why they don’t like the United States. And if we’re going to, every time that they say something’s a recruiting tool, say “then we’ll stop doing that,” are we going to, you know, stop having voting in this country? The culture that we have? Are we going to take away women’s rights? These Islamists don’t like those things about us. So, are we going to change our way of life to take away a recruiting tool for them? I think not.

HOST: But it has been an issue in Europe, among leaders, our allies. They’ve pointed to that as something…

KYL: Big deal. You know, the fact that some European leader — first of all, they didn’t like the fact that we invaded Iraq and replaced Saddam Hussein either. But we decided it was our best interest to do that. So we did. And I don’t think we have to, just because somebody over in Frances says, “oh we think its a bad thing that you have that prison in Guantanamo.” You know, my answer is ok, fine, what would you do with them? France is willing to take one prisoner.

John Kyl and his response is the clip (combined with 8 years of neocon rule in the U.S.) is the PERFECT example of why conservatives in this country should not be responsible for foreign policy.

  4. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

I really do wish some pundit would ask Kyl or one of his cohorts if they really do support holding the detainees without charge at Guantanamo forever. Then ask them how they can justify holding people who have been deemed not guilty, or not involved in terrorism, forever.

Guantanamo is a disgrace and every day it is open it hurts our image with our neighbors. It is a stain on our country that President Obama is trying to remove. It is also a huge mess that is going to take some time to clean up.

No Kyl, WE did not decide to do it. The Bush Crime Family with the help of the Republics decided to do it. We the people think that invading Iraq was a mistake.

KYL: “So, the real question is why do it. And the only answer is, “well, it’s a symbol.” A symbol of what?”

It’s a symbol of human rights abuses perpetrated by the U.S. government. It’s a symbol of just how evil the Bush/Cheney cabal was. And it’s a symbol of how conservatives might rule this country should they regain power.

    Screw you, Kyl.

    ***********************************************************

What Senator Kyl — in his short-sighted and willful ignorance — apparently fails to realize is that this country does not exist in a vacuum. If we continue to insist upon doing whatever we please whenever we please, including disregard for the rule of law and defiance of treaty, with no apparent regard for how anyone else in the world (including our allies) feels about it…we may find that there comes a day when we no longer have any willing allies, because the rest of the world will look upon us in the same way that the ancient peoples used to look upon Rome.

If this country truly believes in the principle of freedom, we have to grant other countries the freedom to choose whether or not to ally themselves (or to continue allying themselves) with us depending on whether or not it suits their purposes to do so. To do otherwise by demanding their allegiance or by threatening to retaliate or punish them in some way should they choose to show their allegiance in some other way than we wish — which, truth be told, Bush both did and threatened to do during the War In Iraq — would be to treat our allies as slaves instead of free nations in their own right and to make ourselves that little bit more like ancient Rome, which in almost every important respect was the complete antithesis of what our Founding Fathers intended this country to be.

  16. linkwray says:

Conservatives and even some mentally fatiqued Dems favor the policy in foreign relations called American Exceptionalism. With such uninspiring and ignorant people like Kyl explaining and defining it, as we see in this example, maybe it should be renamed American Unexceptionalism.

  17. calavzma says:

    to republicans legality is meaningless

  18. Wayne Ant Schneider says:

I think Sen Kyl is taking this idea of “American Exceptionalism” to its logical extremes, and proving why its a flawed concept. We are not right in every thing we do just because we’re the ones doing it. We were wrong to invade Iraq.

The invasion of Iraq has been denounced by good people all over the world, not just in Europe, and for good reason. It was illegal. It was immoral. It was completely unjustified. There were no WMD. There was no nuclear program. They did not have suitcase nukes ready to hand off to the terrorists (like they told former Rep Dick Armey). Every reason they gave for the invasion that was a justification for war turned out not to be true. Every reason they gave for the invasion that turned out to be true was not a justification for war.

To continue to support the idea that the Iraq war was in any way justified is to prove that you are either dishonest or incredibly stupid. Which one are you, Sen Kyl?

  27. ElBruce says:

The terrorists don’t need Guantanamo to figure out that they don’t like the United States.

They do to convince others to support them. The only way to eliminate terrorism within a given population is to turn their own population against the terrorists. That means stopping being as bad as the terrorists.

    .

Big deal. You know, the fact that some European leader — first of all, they didn’t like the fact that we invaded Iraq and replaced Saddam Hussein either.

As it turns out, that was a completely retarded thing to do. If someone keeps telling you not to do stupid shit, maybe you should start listening to them.

As long as he keeps holding elected office. Something should probably be done about that.

  28. ArizonaLiberal says:

Kyl is an idiot and an embarassment to all of us who happen to live in Arizona. Even more unsettling is the fact that he’s not even the most right-wing politician we have in this state. Since Janet Napolitano resigned as governor to head DHS, the republican machine has taken complete control of state government. The wingnuts in the Dixie South look at Arizona with envy and only wish they could institute some of the policies and laws that are on the books out here. If you want to know what elected fascism is all about, you have only to look at Maricopa County (Phoenix) and it’s Obersturmbanfuhrer, Sheriff Joe Arpaio.

and they don’t have the overwhelming prison populations that we have in our country… we lock up a higher percentage of our own population than any nation in the world, this keeps our un-employment numbers looking better than they really are.. Especially with republicans wanting to attack Iran, North Korean, Cuba, Venezuela, Saudi Arabia, Pakistan, and just about every other country out there.

We invaded Iraq based on LIES and it has completely screwed up our country financially. Guantanamo is screwing up our country in terms of international reputation. If you don’t think it’s important to have moral authority in the world, Sen. Kyl, then, sure, thumb your nose at Europe, which has been our ally for decades (not a very friendly gesture). But if you want to be No. 1, then act like a country that IS No. 1 because it cares about the rule of law. We have been acting like a stupid maverick of a country for far too long. Talk about Ugly America.
Postscript to Guido the Benevolent Torturer: thanks for throwing your weight around and getting your local restaurant to turn off Faux News. I started boycotting the local copy place that had Faux on constantly; I am pleased to report it closed awhile back (yippee!).

Is it just me or does Jimmy Big Butt sound like a four year yelling insults at his peers because no one wants to play with him?

I apologize for going off topic, but I just wanted to thank JimmyBB and all the TP trolls. The way you stubbornly slurp up every lie and bit of propaganda the wingers feed you and spit it back out at every opportunity has changed me from an interested but mostly passive liberal to a full-fledged activist.

And I had Fox News removed from the tvs at several local restaurants.

Welcome to our community of activists! As far as Fox on TV, I encourage everyone to speak up when you are somewhere out there and Fox is on the TV ask them to turn the channel. You will probably be told they can’t (most chains have live feeds from corporate headquarters) and in that case ask them to turn it off. I did this the other night at a local restaurant/pub. There weren’t many people in there and no one was watching the TV. I asked them to turn it to another station or turn it off. They turned it off. One wait person thanked me for asking them to do it. She said that the boss wants the TV turned to Fox but if they are asked, and no one objects, they were instructed to do what the patron wants (turn it off or turn the station). She told me that she gets so sick of hearing the yammering from Fox, she has been tempted to quit because of it.

We can make a difference if we speak up. We may not have the cajones to march in the street like the people in Iran, but that doesn’t mean we can’t speak up in public and let our opinions be known.

its pretty asinine to say that “european nations suck” i would imagine that jimmy big bucks has never left our country.

I’m betting he has never even left his state. I’m also betting he is somewhere around 12 years old and is being home schooled.

Jimmy isn’t a real person.Jimmy is a characature played by a real person who is a pussy and a poser…

  85. Lusmu says:

A new drinking game: How many “non sequiturs”, misdirections and downright lies and obfuscations can you count in that little excerpt? Take a swig each time.

Guaranteed to make you drunk by the 30 second mark!

  86. Lusmu says:

Oh, and senator, why should the French take any of Guantanamo prisoners? They warned the US of invading Iraq, of setting up Guantanamo… Doesn’t the US bear responsibility of establishing the guilt of its prisoners in the “war” on terror? Are you saying that if they are convicted in a court of law, their sentence should be carried out in foreign countries?

Senator, you’re not making any sense. If this is your level of competency, you should resign. And if you’re playing politics with this matter… you should also resign and hang your head in shame!

  87. EugeneDebs says:

You know, the fact that some European leader — first of all, they didn’t like the fact that we invaded Iraq

Kyl you IDIOT they were right about that TOO.

  88. wiley says:

That’s a pretty pricey, legal clusterphuck of a symbol. But it’s not a “symbol”—it’s one of the many symptoms of the mess made and left by a lawless administration. If he wants to keep that as a “symbol” it is only because the Republican party apparently has a death wish.

  89. Mikala says:

Kyl may not care what Europe thinks but I believe that they were right on Iraq and they are right on Guantanamo. Besides does anyone really care what this clown thinks or the GOP in general. They won’t admit any wrong doing over the last 8 years and they still believe that they are in power.

  90. FitterDon says:

This clown is so f**kin’ stupid he probably has an aide whose sole responsibility is to follow him around all day and say, “breathe in, breathe out.”

  91. citizen_pain says:

Cole Sear: I see stupid people.

    Malcolm Crowe: In your dreams?
    [Cole shakes his head no]

    Malcolm Crowe: While you’re awake?
    [Cole nods]

Malcolm Crowe: stupid people like, in Washington? On TV?

Cole Sear: Walking around like regular people. They don’t see people different than them. They only see what they want to see. They don’t know they’re stupid.

Malcolm Crowe: How often do you see them?

Cole Sear: All the time. They’re everywhere. All over the south and the wid west, and cable TV. They all have (R) before their names.

  92. fleetw1978 says:

Another example of idiocy demonstrated by supposed leaders in our country. Even after 6 yrs of daily reminders that the invasion and occupation of a foreign country was the biggest strategic blunder in our history. These morons continue to brag about it. Arizona should be proud.
