Beck: ‘[W]e’re in the same situation here’ as in Iran.

Glenn Beck "Shhh"Today, the Washington Post hosted Fox News’ Glenn Beck, who is currently promoting his latest book, for a brief online chat. The first question asked whether Beck believed that “we’re facing the destruction of our country.” “Yeah,” Beck replied, and compared the United States to the current political upheaval in Iran:

CHICAGO: Glenn, On June 6 you said”(I)f we don’t have some common sense, we’re facing the destruction of our country… it’s coming” Do you really believe that the USA is facing destruction?

GLENN BECK: Yeah, I said on Sept. 11 that we should fear no outside force, the only that would destroy America is us, from the inside. I look at what’s happening in Iran, and they are arquing [sic] on who is going to be a better leader in their theocracy. Both candidates were picked buy [sic] the mullahs, neither candidate can do anything without the mullahs telling them it’s okay.

I think we’re in the same situation here. Bill Mahr said this weekend that Barack Obama was George Bush Lite. What are we fighting over? What is the difference between these two parties? There are reasons to speak out, but tearing ourselves apart over these scraps of freedom is odd. We’ve stopped melting together. Our strength was that we were a melting pot.

Beyond the comparison to Iran, it’s odd that Beck purports to lament the disappearance of the “melting pot,” considering how frequently he rails against minorities.

    Hey Glenn

Think maybe that has something to do with right-wing hate radio/TV like your show ?

Man, I wish I had Beck’s gig! I would love to say totally unhinged s#!t on the air and get paid millions for it! He don’t care if he’s not internally consistent in his words. Melting pot, xenophobia, it depends on whether he is fully up on his meds. I’ll give him his props. He is entertaining – kinda like not being able to take your eyes off the impending train wreck!

Bill Mahr (sic) said this weekend that Barack Obama was George Bush Lite. What are we fighting over?

    – - That op-ed piece by Maher was one of the lamest excuses for commentary that I’ve seen from the Left for quite some time. It was nonsensical and without merit. Bill’s been into the weed too much the last year or so and his show pretty much blows most of the time.

  5. paleolib says:

“Melting pot” is just a euphemistic way of saying “act like an American the second you hit our shores” so idiots like Beck can pretend that their ancestors came over on the Mayflower, reciting the pledge of allegiance from memory the entire voyage, never lived in a tenement and spoke flawless English from day one. No clue what the rest of his babble-speak means. The crazy is strong in this one.

Maher is correct when he says Obama is Bush-lite. Obama needs to stop trying to get Republicans on board for anything because they are just going to continue to vote no. It is time for the Dems to ram through legislation including health care. If the Republicans want to filibuster then they will have to face the public. I don’t think the Republicans want to face the voters with a filibuster. I say dare them and let the chips fall where they may.

  25. Purple State says:

Just a small sliver of the stuff that Beck harped about in his comedy show. The “change in speed, not direction” line was straight from his material, and I’m guessing that alone is a chapter in his book.

(Yeah, cheap plug. I saw the show a few weeks ago. Don’t wait for the DVD; it will probably be twice the cost of a regular DVD.)

I don’t like his thoughts on the “melting together” part, either. If there is such a thing as a “melting pot”, the resulting mixture ought to be a compound that is unique in its own way, not one that is still identifiable as its major component. A “melting pot” ought to suggest that everyone has the same rights and liberties, regardless of race, culture, or sexual orientation, right? We shouldn’t be able to look into the pot and pick out who the whites, blacks, Jews, gays, and poor are.

There’s a big difference socially between a “mixture” and a “melt”.

  32. smidget says:

    1) I’m in complete shock that Beck would know what Bill Mahr said about anything.
    2) I agree with Mahr on some things, not on others. I don’t agree with him that Obama isn’t doing anything (the audience didn’t either, if I recall), but I agree with him 100% that the Dems (Obama included) need to stop playing nice with the Republicans. They didn’t play nice with the Dems when they had power.

Now, I’m not advocating the same kind of Congress that we all hated during the Bush years. But let’s get serious, with regards to healthcare at least. Upwards of 80% of the population agrees that healthcare needs a major reform (and has for at least two years: http://www.pnhp.org/news/2007/march/public_opinion_on_he.php), with as many as 60-70% being okay with a tax increase if that’s what it takes. A TAX INCREASE. That’s huge in a society of “screw you, I don’t want to pay taxes, I just want all my government goodies for free.” A public option has wide support.

There is, frankly, no need to compromise on this issue. Do what the people want and get us a damn healthcare plan, with a public option. Those who vote against it will have to feel the public ire at election time. The people want this. Screw the lobbyists, guys, and do your damn jobs. The people hired you, and the people can fire you, too.

  36. winddancer says:

I honestly cannot discern what Beck is trying to say here. Usually, he speaks in frankly far-right terms. These statements are completely incomprehensible to me. Except…

Is he saying (in some kind of weird coded way), the U.S. has their own controlling force..like Iran’s mullahs? Is he talking about Jews, or the Illuminati…or what?

“I think we’re in the same situation here. Bill Mahr said this weekend that Barack Obama was George Bush Lite. What are we fighting over? What is the difference between these two parties? There are reasons to speak out, but tearing ourselves apart over these scraps of freedom is odd.

So is he agreeing with Mahr…or what? I didn’t see Mahr or read his op-ed where he supposedly said these things (?) so I admit I’m even more confused then usual trying to interpret Beck’s view of the world.

  42. MarkD says:

    We’ve stopped melting together.

Maybe that’s because the GOP has spent most of the past 30 years creating an “us vs. them” mentality.

From the Southern Strategy involving racist dog whistles like “states rights” … to the “welfare queens” crap they fed the nation to oppose a social safety net … to the forced-pregnancy movement … to the Christianist elements that make up the GOP base … to the entirety of the Clinton administration, when they spent $40 million to learn about a blowjob … to the “you’re either with us or against us” crap after 9/11 … all the GOP has done is divide us all in order to reach the “50% + 1″ number that gave them way too much power for way too long.

Without divisiveness and exclusionary tactics, the GOP wouldn’t exist.

  46. Bluestocking says:

Beyond the comparison to Iran, it’s odd that Beck purports to lament the disappearance of the “melting pot,” considering how frequently he rails against minorities.

    *********************************************************

With all due respect, that’s because your idea and Beck’s idea of what the “melting pot” means are not only not the same — but probably diametrically opposed to each other.

When Beck and most other conservatives refer to the United States as a “melting pot”, they think of it as being a place in which everyone adheres and conforms to the standards which they personally believe define normalcy — and, of course, that they themselves are (very conveniently) the yardstick which constitutes normalcy. They think that anything which differs from what they personally understand, believe, and/or agree with is inherently and unquestionably abnormal (immoral, un-American, etc.) and should be discouraged or even prohibited. Their idea of the “melting pot” doesn’t resemble a casserole in which every ingredient remains some of its own distinct character even while adding something special to the whole. They think the “melting pot” ought to be a place where most individual differences almost completely disappear, where everyone is exactly alike — i.e., a heterosexual Christian conservative Republican. This is one of the reasons why I’m not a conservative or a Republican — they think the United States should be like one gigantic country club, and I happen to think that would be one of the most boring things anyone could possibly imagine.

  47. 5th Estate says:

Beck will say whatever ‘pays’ and whatever ‘plays’—that’s his schtick.
His hero is Rush Limbaugh but not because he believes in Limbaugh’s political philosophy.
Beck admires Limbaugh purely for his financial and social success, for his business model.

Limbaugh has the mainstream conservative audience sewn up, so Beck had to find his own niche to emulate Rush and acquire a captive audience.
Beck now represents the most lunatic fringe of the Right. That’s who he panders to, and that’s how he earns his money. It’s easy money because the Right-wing are reactionaries who respond to appeals to the reptilian brain.

Beck is Limbaugh 2.0. Limbaugh evolved into a political player by accidental synergy. Beck’s rise is far more calculated, and actually shallower. Beck IS the ‘entertainer’ that Limbaugh pretends to be, but he’s entertaining himself by making suckers out of his mindless audience.

Also, I think his comments in this interview were meant to suggest that both Democrats and Republicans are puppets for special interests without concern for the general welfare of the country.

While I don’t seek the opinions of the latter group enough to know where their political allegiances lie, isn’t the notion that they would ally themselves with the former group somewhat counter-intuitive?

  80. Lora says:

    To Jordu
Perhaps it is counter-intuitive, but David Duke ran for office as a Republican–not as a Democrat. Perhaps it is because anti-semites like Duke and vonBrunn still find enough within the Republican Party that they can support. Of course, the farthest of the rightwing supports neither of the major political parties.

  81. pete says:

Nothing counter intuitive about it. The GOP is closer to the ideals of the radical right than the DNC, or most of humanity. They grow harder to separate with each passing day.

In the case of the beast who murdered Stephen Johns, his hate for the GOP is because he thought they had moved left and abandoned his racist ideals.

Trying to call him a “leftist” is insane. Even if he rejected the GOP’s support for Israel, he certainly followed their lead to take matters into his own hands.

The far-right hate machine is fomenting rebellion and their audience is snapping, one by one, and making their statements with bullets instead of words. As much as I hate to say it, I don’t think it will be long before the bombings start.

In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised to see the ultimate expression of terror, suicide bombings, here in the good ‘ol U.S.A. Only here it won’t be Muslims, or communists, or foreign powers. It will be the quiet “good Christian patriot”, who lives down the street.

WTF? This from a man who gets paid big bucks to keep the country divided?

  84. Lora says:

And why should Glenn or anyone fear the liberal media, Jimmy Little Brain? It isn’t known for printing the addresses and photos of people it doesn’t like and encourage shooters to go seek them, after all.

As long as you don’t go pouring “gasoline” on people, knock yourself out.

  86. flavorino says:

    Beck’s brain seems scrambled……

    Past drug use? Alcoholism?
    or just plain nuts?

I clicked the links, but didn’t see any “railing against minorities”. I saw him discussing border security, saw him make the claim that the democratic party sees Sotamayor as some sort of “Magic Latina…”

Rewind all that and look again.

That says everything we need to know about you, right there.

Do you see how utterly un-falsifiable this position is? If a person committing violence agrees with the GOP, it’s because GOP ideals encourage violence. If they disagree, it’s because the GOP “moved left”. One could easily adapt the argument to vilify the Democratic party, the Catholic Church, or the American Medical Association if one were so inclined.

  89. pete says:

One could have recently read his own words on the subject, talking about how “his party”, the GOP, had “abandoned him and the white race”. He also provided thoughts on Obama and other Democrats that are far too vile to repeat. Alas, it appears that his accomplices have erased much of his online presence and those who had unintentionally spread his vile crap have done so as well.

But hey, if one wants to paint the killer of Stephen Johns as a “leftist”? I won’t argue. I’ve found it’s impossible to argue with people who are batscat crazy.

  90. pete says:

I might add that when a Becky fan uses the term “un-falsifiable”? It makes me laugh until I pee.

I never claimed to be a fan of Glenn Beck, nor did I claim that von Brunn was a “leftist”. I was merely trying to question the assumptions that Beck is a racist, and that von Brunn is “right wing”.

And, yes, your argument does seem to be tautologous. I would be interested in seeing those writings you alluded to, though, should they resurface. That would, at the very least, provide compelling evidence that von Brunn viewed himself as right wing.

  92. pete says:

I didn’t call Becky a racist. I said he’s insane. Personally, I need no proof beyond his calling Bible Spice “smart”.

  93. JorduSpeaks says:

    You didn’t, but others did.

False assumption. There are elements in the party that have always viewed “mainstream” republicans as RINO’s, and contemptable. If now, they are motivated to violence because of Obama’s election, they are merely acting out impulses they always possessed, but previously kept suppressed. They have not moved from their political position of obstruction. It is simply another form of obstruction. Violent obstruction.

  95. barfly says:

Von Brunn posted on Free Republic, a conservative website, and his posts were not removed. Anyone who knows Free Republic, knows that unconservative viewpoints are censured and removed. The mere fact that his posts exist on their site is confirmation enough, for all but those inclined to disregard, because of politically partisan leanings.

So then, is it your view that, for these individuals, the relationship between political affiliation and violent inclination is incidental rather than causal?

  100. JorduSpeaks says:

I read the article. It was typical nonsense ranting and paranoid conspiracy theory with delusions of persecution. That said, it was critical of Obama (sort of, it didn’t actually criticize any policies of his, just made baseless accusations about his citizenship). I still don’t know what, if anything, his antisemitism has to do with the right wing, but I am convinced that he identified with the right on some level.

One quick clarification, von Brunn did not actually post on the site (as near as I can tell). Rather, he posted the rant on a Norwegian site (for some reason). It was then discovered by a user of Free Republic and re-posted.

  101. smidget says:

    JorduSpeaks

It is not that antisemitism is associated with neocons, it’s that antisemites are conservatives, politically.

It’s kind of like when people say that “Not all antisocials are serial killers, but all serial killers are antisocials.”
