REPORT: Key Terror Detainee Acknowledged ‘I Make Up Stories’ In Response To Torture
The Bush administration has long justified its use of torture by claiming that it obtained valuable information from torturing 9-11 mastermind Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. Late last year, former Vice President Dick Cheney said, “Did it produce the desire results? I think it did.” He explained:
I think, for example, Khalid Sheikh Mohammed, who was the number three man in al Qaeda, the man who planned the attacks of 9/11, provided us with a wealth of information.
But according to documents released by the Obama administration in response to a lawsuit brought by the ACLU, Cheney was lying. Mohammed told U.S. military officials that he gave false information to the CIA after withstanding torture:
“I make up stories,” Mohammed said, describing in broken English an interrogation probably administered by the CIA that concerned the location of Al Qaeda leader Osama bin Laden.
“Where is he? I don’t know. Then he torture me,” Mohammed said. “Then I said, ‘Yes, he is in this area.’”
The torture of Mohammed, who we know was waterboarded 183 times in one month, “underscores the unreliability of statements obtained by torture.”
In an interview with Fox News’ Brit Hume earlier this year, President Bush admitted that he personally authorized the torture of Mohammed. He said he personally asked “what tools” were available to use on him, and sought legal approval for waterboarding him:
BUSH: One such person who gave us information was Khalid Sheikh Mohammed. … And I’m in the Oval Office and I am told that we have captured Khalid Sheikh Mohammed and the professionals believe he has information necessary to secure the country. So I ask what tools are available for us to find information from him and they gave me a list of tools, and I said are these tools deemed to be legal? And so we got legal opinions before any decision was made.

Please, someone I trust, refresh my memory on the timeline of these “tools”. Were we using them before “we got legal opinions”? If so, then wouldn’t that fact make what Bush said a lie? (Well, yes, if so.)

The question still remains….what is being hidden…and why is the Obama administration now continuing to hide it?
I’m having a more and more difficult time trying to have faith that Obama has some chess game he’s playing in which the full truth will be revealed and the appropriate investigations and prosecutions will take off. While campaigning in 2000, he and Joe Lieberman appeared on MTP. Alluding to the millions Cheney received as CEO of Halliburton, Joe said that the government had been good to Dick. And Dick said, “The government had nothing to do with that.” A bald-faced lie.
He lied about what happened when he shot a 78-year-old man in the face after downing some beer. He also had his friend, who admitted she didn’t see what happened, go out and lie to the press about the whole thing.
And he has been lying about his precious torture program. Why do you continue to support Dick Cheney? Are you inhuman?

Given that both statements can’t be true, the prudent observer will judge from the circumstances which is more likely to be a lie.
Since experienced interrogators routinely confirm that information obtained by torture is unreliable, I choose to believe that the same is true in this case.
You, on the other hand, seem to believe that the information given under torture — as to the whereabouts of Osama bin Laden, for instance — was truthful and accurate. At which point, you must be wondering, how incompetent was Bush if he knew where bin Laden was hiding and he STILL couldn’t find him?

In any case, it’s obvious that this would be how it works. Being tortured gives you incentive only to say whatever’s the most plausible, regardless of whether it’s true. The quickest way to stop being tortured is to confirm whatever the torturer may already believe, whatever that may be.

OK, if torture “works,” then why haven’t we caught OBL? That’s kind of a critical test for their theory. This guy told them where he was. Presumably he wasn’t there, since we haven’t caught him. Therefore, torture elicited false information. If you disagree, then produce OBL as proof. If you can’t, then you’re wrong.
The only way to avoid that test was to presume that he’s now lying about what he was asked. But that raises the question – if we didn’t torture people to find out OBL’s location, then why not? Wouldn’t that be the most important thing we’d want to know? Kind of the first order of business?
Torture does not tell you anything you don’t already know. Up until it turned out we were doing that, everyone already knew that. We’ve known it for centuries. But wingnuts have an amazing capacity to forget long-held common knowledge the instant it becomes inconvenient, and pretend it was never so.
