FLASHBACK: Ensign Called On Clinton To Resign After Admitting Affair — ‘He Has No Credibility Left’

ensignThe Washington Post’s Chris Cillizza reports that Sen. John Ensign (R-NV), a member of GOP leadership and a potential candidate for president in 2012, will hold a press conference later today in which he will acknowledge having an extramarital affair “with a campaign staffer who was married to an employee in Ensign’s Senate office.” Ensign flew back to Las Vegas to make the public announcement.

Since his election to the Senate in 2000, Ensign has been a leading conservative voice who demanded the resignation of former Idaho Sen. Larry Craig in September 2007. Ensign called Craig a “disgrace” after he was arrested in June 2007 in an airport men’s restroom on disorderly conduct charges. But when Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) acknowledged having an affair, Ensign didn’t call on him to resign.

Ensign has also been an ardent opponent of gay marriage. In Feb. 2004, Ensign announced his support for an amendment to the Constitution that would have defined marriage as a union between a man and a woman. Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage“:

“Sadly, the effort to redefine marriage against the wishes of a majority of the people is, with help from activist judges, succeeding,” Ensign said. “In order to defend the institution of marriage, uphold the rights of individual states, and maintain the will of the people, I believe we are compelled to amend our country’s constitution.”

“The effort to pass a constitutional amendment reaffirming marriage as being between a man and a woman only is being undertaken strictly as a defense of marriage against the attempt to redefine it and, in the process, weaken it,” Ensign said. “Marriage is an extremely important institution in this country and protecting it is, in my mind, worth the extraordinary step of amending our constitution.”

In 1998, while running for Nevada’s Senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky:

“I came to that conclusion recently, and frankly it’s because of what he put his whole Cabinet through and what he has put the country through,” Ensign said Thursday, becoming the first member of the Nevada delegation to call for Clinton to quit. “He has no credibility left.”

How much “credibility” does Ensign have left?

Update More quotes from Ensign:

“I believe that marriage should be defined as that between one man and one woman. You want to do what is ideal for children and all of the studies show that the ideal for children is to be in a household with a father and a mother.” [4/19/09]

“Mr. President, I rise today to speak on a topic that is very important. That is the preservation of the most important structure in our society.” [7/13/04]

"There's too many people that paint with a broad brush that we're all corrupt, we're all amoral. … And having these kinds of things happen, whether it's a Republican or Democratic senator — we certainly have had plenty of Democratic scandals in the past — we need people who are in office who will hold themselves to a little higher standard." Delicious.

We haven’t had a good Republican sex scandal in a couple of months.

  2. getplaning says:

The biggest threat to marriage seems to be people who don’t take marriage seriously, not people who want to get married.

  3. Marie says:

Ensign is, of course, against same-sex marriage and for the “protection” of the instituion of marriage. Family values, after all.
Well, this should give Letterman a break from non-stop Palin.

  4. candide says:

I usually hate to revel in people’s failures. I have my own, and it would be unseemly.

On the other hand this guy is a LAUGH RIOT! Suffer, you hypocritical SOB! You deserve every bit of humiliation you have coming. Thanks for protecting marriage and all!!!

  5. Marie says:

Not only was he unfaithful in his own marriage vows, but he was involved with the WIFE of a buy who worked for him!!
Make your subordinate a cuckold – the ultimate betrayal.

  6. The Angry Republican says:

    Resign already you hypocrite

  7. ralph the wonder locust says:

I wonder if Sen. Ensign had any public statements regarding the fall of candidate John Edwards a year ago?

  8. Lora says:

Of course, I love it, but, on the other hand, I don’t see why Repugnacant hypocrisy is even news.

  9. blogenfreude says:

And let’s not forget sports fans – Vitter didn’t admit to an affair, he admitted to schtupping hookers. That’s a violation of the law. Ensign should be driven from office.

  10. Mr. Sonia Herecomestheangst says:

For the Senator, the thong together with the woman’s lower back tattoo was just “a gift from God, but a call unto temptation” as they say.

So they had to pray together in the hotel bedroom to resolve this perplexing moral dilemma.

  11. Cappy says:

OMG, a repub who’s a blazing hypocrite! Who ever heard of such a thing?
    /sarcasm off

“Marriage should be between woman, a man, and however many mistresses he can keep on the side.”

  12. rosemorals says:

part of the litmus test for pure republicanism is the unwillingness to look honesty in the eye – spin and lie your way out of anything. a second trait is to stand on whatever side that is opposite to the progression of society: so for 2009 – fall back on the views espoused in 1860.

this is hardly shocking – with the blatant racism flowing from the various party officials throughout the country – michelle obama being descended from a monkey ( i mean this is 2009). to the circulated photo of president obama darkened and only his eyes showing.

fact is the entire GOP is mired in denial – they preach purity of spirit yet bang anything in sight. they rail against the evils of homosexuality while sucking on any pipe within reach. i would pay to be an observer at judgement (suppose it is real) – imagine being before God as these righteous republicans present themselves – adulterers, gay bashers who love gay sex, leave their wives on their sick bed for the pretty young thing, willing to say and do anything.

so rock on master ensign – we afterall agree with all true republicans that it is what you appear to be saying that matters and not what you do so nor do. so continue telling us about the evils of gay marriage and how it is destroying the (other) marriage – for lord knows adultery never destroys marriage nor does it give it a bad name.

no – it all goes back to the gays with their bright colors and happy go lucky disposititions – in fact, i blame gay people for Ensigns current predicament – i dont know why nor have any proof but it just feels right to do so. in all though – Ensign must be conforted to know that he will not burn alone in hell for his hypocricy, an entire party is rooted in this – perhaps a heart to heart moment with the pre-eminent oracle of the party, newt gingrich, also a three time adulterer could soothe him back to life

  42. Pennsylvanianne says:

P for Progressive wonders what the problem is with what Ensign did. Well, P, here are a few problems:
1.) Ensign was sleeping with someone who worked for him! This is considered a supreme no-no in corporate circles.
2.) He was cuckolding someone else who worked for him!
3.) He was violating his marriage vows (”forsaking all others,” etc.), a sin against his wife and God (if he got married in a church, synagogue or temple, that is)!
4.) He was hypocritically doing what he excoriated Clinton for, and thought it was so bad, he called on Clinton to resign!
Obviously, Ensign should take his own advice and RESIGN. But yes, I know, IOKIYAR.

  84. misscoleopteramolly says:

“You want to do what is ideal for children and all of the studies show that the ideal for children is to be in a household with a father and a mother.”
    _________________________________________________________

“All” the studies? What studies? I have seen results of studies that show children generally do better in two-parent homes than in single-parent homes. And I say “generally” because of course there are exceptions. Many single parents do a great job.

But I haven’t seen any studies to show that children are better off with two parents of different sexes than with two parents of the same sex. In fact, gay couples are quite dedicated when it comes to parenting. Very few accidental pregnancies occur with gay couples, and they have to go through quite a bit to have children. When you have to work that hard to have a child, it’s usually because you really want one and you want to do right by him/her.

But this is a typical wingnut tactic. It falls in the same category as “they say” — suggesting there’s an understood consensus somewhere even though none exists.

  85. 5th Estate says:

    Sam…

    Thanks for replying.

FYI Progressives also stand for the National Anthem.
And they are indeed for the future, which is why so many of them always want the latest I-phone.

But it’s hard to be against the future, because you’ll never be able to meet up with someone ‘later’, because that would be in the future so it won;t work if you aren’t for the future. Perhaps THAT was one of your problems as a Conservative.

And progressives have always been cool of course, even during the last eight years when your Conservative buddies called us all traitors and Un-American and baby-killers and Fascists and perverts–which they still do of course, but they keep leaving out the fact that we are also now “winners”.

So bear in mind, as a newly minted “progressive” you still won’t be immune from people being mean to you.

But as long as you are on the “winning team” from now on, that shouldn’t effect you as much, because really “winning” is ALL that matters, right? Not being correct, or moral, or generous in spirit or honest or practical, or considerate, or circumspect–just “winning”, whatever it is. Just as long as YOU get a trophy!.

Well , anyway, now that you are a ‘progressive” I’m sure your social life will improve greatly. It will be just like one of those Disney teen moves where the weird outcast chick suddenly gets her hair done and a miniskirt and becomes the prom queen.

    One word of advice.
Expressing yourself like a six-year-old when you are apparently 23 MIGHT be a bit of an obstacle to your socio-political plans. Work on that.

    Briefly:
    1) the Republicans have long presented themselves as the lone party of upholding family values.
    2) when reality shows they have behaved horribly, they conveniently forget, then deny, the reality (for ex., the joke about Chelsea Clinton/Janet Reno springs to mind — or, more recently, the forwarded email with the composite presidential photo).

Clearly, no one is perfect. For that reason, no one — and no party — ought to present himself/herself/itself as such.

The more self-inflated they are, the more they fly around the room when popped.

  120. maddawg says:

Additional quotes from Ensign in 2004:

    http://marriagelaw.cua.edu/Policy/TestimonySenate/ensi071304.cfm

Mr. ENSIGN. Mr. President, I rise today to speak on a topic that is very important. That is the preservation of the most important structure in our society. I rise to speak on the topic of marriage and the need for the Federal Marriage Amendment.

    ****
All words have meaning. The word marriage has meaning deep rooted in our culture. There are certain words that have such an important meaning that they invoke strong emotions within each of us. For me, marriage is one such word. The word marriage represents an institution with historically universal understanding. Its meaning is one that has been constant throughout time and across all cultures. I can think of no other word, and no other institution, that enjoys such a special status with such an important meaning.

    ****
For those who say that the Constitution is so sacred that we cannot or should not adopt the Federal Marriage Amendment, I would simply make two points. First, marriage, and the sanctity of that institution, predates the American Constitution. It predates the founding of our Nation and even the landing at Plymouth Rock. Marriage, as a social institution, predates every other institution on which ordered society in America, and the world as a whole, has relied including even the church itself. Second, the Founding Fathers envisioned the possibility that future generations may need to amend the Constitution.

    ****
It is with concern that I have read about how a few unelected judges and some locally elected government officials have taken steps to redefine marriage to fit their own agenda. It is not right to mold marriage to fit the desires of a few, against the wishes of so many, and to ignore the important role that marriage has played in our history.

You know, I went to the article you linked to, and actually read the parts they quoted where they were saying that Holder was trying to make gay marriage sound ebil… and these were perfectly valid legal concerns. Under the section titled “Holy Cow. Obama invoked incest and people marrying children” was a description of varying definitions of incest regarding first cousins between states as well as varying ages of consent between states. As it turns out, states don’t have to use each others’ definitions or ages of consent. That’s relevant to the “full faith and credit” issue, particularly where marriage is concerned.

I didn’t bother to go on to the “saves money” part, because the parts that article quoted had convinced me it was trying to misrepresent them. It failed.

Moral failure is not a Republican or Democratic trait; it is a HUMAN trait. Ensign has confessed and asked for understanding and forgiveness. What more can he do? Perhaps he could apologize to others who have similarly fallen that he previously grandstanded against. But those of you that are screaming for his head are just as hypocritical.

If all the sinners in Washington resigned, it would be a ghost town. There is also plenty of hypocrisy to go around. But, our leaders should stand for principles they believe in, and that are best for our country, even if they themselves fall short. Ensigns defense of marriage is not invalidated by his own moral failure. Indeed, his wife has attested that this deeply hurtful experience has made them stronger. As one who has been married for 32 years, with my own failures and disappointments, I have great empathy for them. For that matter, I have the same empathy for John and Elizabeth Edwards. At times like this, I would expect mature and “progressive” people to demonstrate grace and avoid judgementalism. This should not be a partisan issue.

Moral failure is not a Republican or Democratic trait; it is a HUMAN trait.

    Absolutely.

Unfortunately, conservatives like Senator Ensign seem to consider moral failure in others to be signs of their own moral superiority. They show remarkably little capacity for sympathy and even strive to make “empathy” a dirty word.

I think if you were to hang around here with any kind of open mind, you’d find the regulars are remarkably sympathetic people, but have little tolerance for the kind of hypocrisy that Senator Ensign has exhibited — hypocrisy that is all too common among politicians of all stripes.

In short, Phillip, it’s not the moral failing we celebrate; it’s the exposure of hypocrisy.

  163. ralph the wonder locust says:

As far as the Senator’s support for the “defense of marriage” we find his position so absurd — that marriage needs “defending” from people who WANT to get married — that when a real threat to marriage rears its ugly head, it makes the fake “defense of marriage” even more ridiculous.

I’ve been married for twelve years, and a gay couple getting married has no impact whatsoever on my marriage. How about yours?

Rep. Steve Largent (R-Okla.), a Christian conservative, insists a male staff member is present whenever he meets with a woman, his spokesman said. John Ensign, who is running for senate in Nevada will not be alone in a car with a woman”

Without diminishing Sen. Ensign’s responsibility, a repressive, organized, sanctimonious group devoted to legislating morality such as the Promise Keepers is a virtual petri dish for the very behavior it seeks to suppress. This is a textbook case. Instead of driving out their demons and those they perceive in others they succeed only in nurturing their own.

  177. fubar says:

Apprently, the real story is to establish Ensign as a practicing hetero, even though his narriage between one man and one woman has clearly failed. Clinton did something that no Republican President ever did: have sex in office. (and Ensign wants a crack at that brass ring, too!)

The FIX(GOP)-TV Newtork could create a new “reality” show. Its name would be “Bowling for Concubines.” Some of its contestants might include: John Ensign, Larry Craig, Newt Gingrich, David Vitter, Rudy Giuliani, Jimmy Swaggart, Harry Hyde, Dan Burton, Kirk Fordice, etc.

The show would last one year. At the end of the season they could have playoffs. The ultimate winner of that tournament would win the services of a prostitute for a whole year.

In addition, he would get a gold-plated cross. It doesn’t matter who the champ is because all of the contestants are pristine Christians.

And to present that award, no one other than……Carrie Prejean.

  181. CalDude says:

I made a mistake. I typed in “Harry Hyde.” I meant to type “Henry Hyde.”

  182. Bluestocking says:

Ensign said the amendment, which ultimately failed, was necessary to protect “the institution of marriage”…In 1998, while running for Nevada’s Senate seat against Harry Reid, Ensign called on President Clinton to resign in light of his admitted affair with former White House intern Monica Lewinsky.

    It’s O-Kay If You’re A Re-Pub-Li-Can!!!!

(Provided that your partner is of the opposite sex, that is…)

*Sigh*…yet another hypocritical, self-righteous, adulterous Republican who apparently saw nothing wrong with doing the very same thing which he’d condemned other people for doing — or at least, certainly didn’t see it as wrong enough to stop himself from doing it! — and who considered himself entitled to lecture other people about the behavior which he believes damages the “sanctity of marriage” (even when it doesn’t) even while engaging in behavior which suggests indifference or nonchalance regarding the damage he was inflicting on his own marriage. (The dates of his own infidelity, however, probably explain why he kept quiet about Vitter…guilty conscience, perhaps?)

Someone should remind him of what they say about pointing your finger at someone — namely, that you still have three fingers pointing back at you! When one considers the way in which most people — Democrats and Republicans alike — seem inclined to criticize others for actions of which they themselves have been/are guilty, or when they are guilty of other equally reprehensible deeds, it becomes clear just how true this statement is…

  183. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

The wheel of irony keeps on rolling. It appears the biggest threat to marriage these days are those family values preaching republikins like Henry Hyde, Rudy Ghouliani, Newt Gingrich and Diaper David Vitter.

    Two problems, stupid troll.
    1. Edwards doesn’t hold any office.
    2. Edwards never tried to legislate morality, to the best of my knowledge, or pimp “family values” to con the rubes into thinking he’s some kind of saint.

To bad the stupid troll is pete.

Elizabeth Edwards “It’s not the infidelity. It’s his reckless decision to go forward with a presidential race after confessing a fling to his cancer-stricken wife, knowing it was much more than that. Even worse was his willingness to feature his wife in a campaign based on family values, even as he lied about the affair on the campaign trail.”
So i guess that Edwards did do the same thing that Ensign did. Next time try to inform yourself before you open your black hole.
Liberals love to try and bash conservatives about this and that and yet when their own guys do the same thing or worse they have no problems with it. And you people are talking about hypocrisy. Please the hipocrites are the ones in this blog. From what i have read most of the people in this blog do nothing but read what the media puts out and doesn’t even bother trying to do any research. That is apperant from the responces that you get from some of the people in here. You can tell just how much a person knows with the comments that they make. And I have found that when you talk to some people and say things they don’t like or can’t dispute than they call you names.
It doesn’t matter weather he is a democrat or a republican he lied just like clinton, edwards, mccain, and the rest of them. Is anyone going to ask him to resign? NO Is anyone in here going to ask a democrat to resign if they do something just as bad? NO I didn’t hear anyone telling Edwards that he needed to quit the campaign because of his cheating and he was doing the same thing. Talking about family values.

  187. LibertyLover says:

I don’t think that Ensign’s affair had any impact on his being able to do his job. However, that said, the hypocrisy is staggering. But unsurprising.

Since the Republicans have staked out the “moral high ground” … How many of them have fallen into the pit? How much further a fall is it when you hoist yourself up onto that pedestal?

Many of you Theo-publicans believe that if the House, Senate, and President Obama could just shred the Constitution and supplant it with the Holy Bible, the US would become an instant Utopia.

There would be no more: abortion, death penalty, drug usage/gangs, racism, homosexuality, foul language, financial corruption, rape/incest, poverty, disease, famine, natural disasters, war, nor ADULTERY.

Unfortunately, Puratinism doesn’t necessarily reward people who live a “Christian” lifestyle. It benefits people who APPEAR to live a Christian lifestlye.

In this arrangement, when wealthy and connected people “screw up” they can buy-off, intimidate, dig up privileged medical, financial, and legal info. or use many other means to keep the situation silent.

Anyone offering a different opinion on here, no matter how respectfully offered, is cussed out and called everything but righteous. So much for progressive thought and tolerance.

This largely a hate site, plain and simple. The aspersions made about Christians or people of faith shows the utter closed-mindedness and intolerance of so many people who consider themselves “liberal” and “progressive”. You are anything but.

I find particularly revolting the false insinuations that Christians or conservatives want to force their values on others. It is largely Christians and people of faith that formulated our Constitution and Bill of Rights that guarantee the rights of all our citizens, both believers and non-believers alike. Do Christians want to promote principles that they stand for? Of course. So do all of you. This is America. We can agree to disagree. But, the aspersions made by many of you about a huge plurality of loyal Americans is despicable and false.

Christians (who come in many different stripes) do not have to be perfect themselves to promote Christian or otherwise sound principles. We should all aspire to higher standards than we ourselves have been able to always attain. We should not make, or only support, laws that would not indict the worst behavior of our best citizens. No, our laws, and not only our laws, but our public discourse should encourage civil, positive, safe, respectful behavior, even though many of us…no, make that ALL of us…fall short.

So all of you that love to point out Ensign’s hypocrisies on here, stop being hypocritical yourself and start treating him…well…like he were a liberal Democrat. Then you would be less hypocritical yourselves, and I will respect you and your opinions more. (Not that I believe many of you care one iota!).

The key phrase you use is “I don’t think.” That’s pretty clear.

Just for a start, a senator who is having an adulterous affair that he wants kept quiet is open to blackmail by lobbyists.

From 2007 to August 2008 Ensign’s focus was not on his job as senator but on managing his affair and finding new employment for his paramour and her husband.

The hypocritical Ensign quotes I have seen here and there are prior to the time of the affair in question. Here is a link to a youtube clip from April 13, 2007, in which Ensign held himself up as a paragon of virtue, someone who was quite the opposite of those nasty Democrats.

  195. karen marie says:

Go look at Ensign’s voting record.

Regardless of whether he was faithful to his wife or not, the guy is a shill for corporate interests.

He not only votes against funding for education but votes against closing corporate loopholes and using the additional revenue to support education.
