Bachmann Boasts About Breaking The Law: I’m Refusing To Fill Out The Census

Michele BachmannNext year, the 2010 Census will be sent to every American household, as required by the U.S. Constitution. The far right has issued dire warnings of the Census; on a May 29th episode of Bill Bennett’s radio show, RNC Chairman Michael Steele intoned, “Certainly the collection of this information is going to be part of an ongoing political campaign by this administration.”

In an interview with the Washington Time’s right-wing radio show this morning, Rep. Michele Bachmann (R-MN) declared that she would break the law and refuse to answer the Census questions, beyond noting the number of people in her household:

BACHMANN: The mother lode of all data information will be from the Census. … Unfortunately, the Census data has become very intricate, very personal, a lot of the questions that are asked. I know for my family, the only question we will be answering is how many people are in our home. We won’t be answering any information beyond that, because the Constitution doesn’t require any information beyond that.

Listen to it:

Bachmann explained that her fears over the Census were in large part due to the fact that her Number-One Enemy, ACORN, could possibly be involved. (The group might help recruit some of the 1.4 million people needed to go door-to-door to count every American.) She insinuated that former senator Norm Coleman (R-MN) had lost his reelection bid because of “fraudulent votes” perpetrated by ACORN:

BACHMANN: This is what ACORN will do. They will get multiple fraudulent voter registration forms, stuff the registrar’s office with them, in hopes that maybe not all fraudulent registrations will find people at the polls voting. But there may be some people who get through. And sometimes you don’t often need many in order to sway an election one way or another. I come from Minnesota. We’re still in a recount with our U.S. Senate race between Sen. Norm Coleman and the challenger Al Franken. Sen. Coleman won the race on election day, but that was challenged repeatedly, over and over, with what we feel may be fraudulent vote [sic], and we’re very concerned about what comes forward.

At the end of the interview, Bachmann declares it to be a “badge of honor” to be a “target” of the press.

I hope Batshit Bachmann encourages all of her constituents to refuse to participate in the census, too. Since federal dollars are allocated based on population, that’s a lot less money going into a congressional district willing to keep an idiot in office.

  46. Wiz says:

First of all we should encourage all Republicans to not participate in the Census since the Census is the basis for allocation of electorial votes, this would favor the blue states if Repubs don’t fill ou the forms on a large scale.

Second, Minnesota is a state that allows election day registration. It is up to the workers at the polls to register voters if not previously registered. Acorn has no effort in Minnesota related to registration. Bachmann doesn’t seem to be aware of what happens in her own state.

  47. stewarjt says:

She doesn’t have time to fill out the Census form because she’s going directly back to the Mother Ship.

  48. chiroptera toasterhead says:

Well I, for one, fully support Rep. Bachmann in this. I’m glad to see her sticking it to “The Man”, and sincerely hope that conservatives across the country will follow suit.

She and other conservatives should ESPECIALLY not put any type of political or party affiliation on their census forms. There are some things the government shouldn’t know, and that’s one of them. Just leave that category blank.

And of course, my support of her this is in no way – NO WAY – motivated by the fact that the results of the 2010 Census will be used to re-gerrymander electoral districts and thus an undercounting of conservatives will give Democrats an advantage over the next decade.

Republicans are afraid Democrats will use the same dirty tactics they used after the last census:

    BusinessWeek

    Washington Outlook
    Edited by Richard S. Dunham

    Has Gerrymandering Gone Too Far?

With Congress almost evenly divided, both parties are more willing than ever to test the limits of the law to gain ground. For House Republicans, that means leaning on friendly state legislatures to redraw the lines of congressional districts and create safe GOP havens. It’s a brutally efficient approach: Last year in Pennsylvania, for example, Republicans wiped out four Democratic districts. And GOP leaders elsewhere are not content to wait until after the next census in 2010 to play the gerrymander card. Newly elected Republican majorities in Texas and Colorado this year took the unusual step of re-redistricting — changing lines already ratified by the courts.

No Michele, your badge of honor is apparently being the dumbest, most delusional broad in DC.

  62. Buckie Boy says:

And the documented voter fraud by ACORN exists where?

Oh, that’s right, there is none. The fraudulent registrations are tossed out, idiot. ACORN is required by law to turn all of them in, fraudulent or not. The voter board then verifies them.

She must have a direct line to the Dominican underage prostitute and drug abuser, Rush Limpballs for her talking points.

Minn. you should be very embarrassed to have someone this stupid to represent you.

  63. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

Well now I know where my very republican sister got her “I’m not filling out the census” idea from as Fraulein Bachmann is her hero. *puke*

  64. chiroptera toasterhead says:

This is what ACORN will do. They will get multiple fraudulent voter registration forms, stuff the registrar’s office with them, in hopes that maybe not all fraudulent registrations will find people at the polls voting. But there may be some people who get through. And sometimes you don’t often need many in order to sway an election one way or another.
    ____________

So let me see if I’m following her logic here.

ACORN will register names of nonexistent people to vote, submitting these registrations to their respective state electoral boards as required by law, since it’s not legal for them to throw out any voter registrations they receive, even if it’s from “Farticus P. Fakename” at “123 Nonexistent Street” in “Nowheresville, Minn.”

Then the state electoral boards will registration cards to these nonexistent people, despite the nonexistence of Mr. Fakename or Nonexistent Street or Nowheresville. Because there’s obviously no way a government agency with access to dozens of government databases could verify any of that information.

And then, in a few cases, on Election Day, Farticus P. Fakename and his nonexistent non-compatriots will actually MATERIALIZE, show up at the polls, and VOTE! Not all, but SOME – perhaps a few hundred nonexistent individuals will be Reverse Raptured and pull that lever for A COMEDIAN!

    It could happen, I suppose.

Bachmann may have some issues with ACORN (no matter how unfounded they may be), but protesting ACORN by refusing to answer census questions just makes her look like a fool. Not that she needs any help in that department.

ACORN has turned out to be a wonderful tool…

Yes, the money is so well hidden it doesn’t even seem to exist. It’s amazing how no matter how hard you investigate them, all you ever find is a responsible volunteer organization that helps poor people register to vote and such. Just amazing. They must be really great at hiding any and all evidence of their ebil world domination plot. Why, it’s almost as if it’s all just a big fat fantasy the wingnut overlords made up to explain why they’re so unpopular.

    .

    chiroptera toasterhead Says:

So let me see if I’m following her logic here.

ACORN will register names of nonexistent people to vote…

Also note that ACORN separately bundled and identified the questionable forms, making it that much easier for the gubmint to check them out.

Right-wing voter registration groups did not perform this extra step, which is why they all self-reported zero problems, compared to ACORN which made the political mistake of reporting to the government exactly how many errors they found in their own results. This very difference is what the wingnuts use to say that ACORN commits fraud. It’s quite obvious then that it’s actually the other way around.

    ____________________________________________________________

Interesting question. Short answer is that I would fill out the census form no matter who was in the White House.

The 2010 Census will mark the sixth time I’ve been counted. The other five times I’m been counted in the U.S. census have been during the Eisenhower, Nixon, Carter, Bush41, and Clinton administrations. That’s three Republicans and two Democrats.

And now I’m supposed to get all paranoid about some nefarious agenda the government has? I don’t think so — after looking up the planned 2010 questions, I don’t see how they are much different than what’s been asked in the past.

Tell me — Clinton was President during the last census, in 2000. Did you refuse to fill it out and hide under your bed because you were afraid of the “database” he was collecting?

A lot of people aren’t really aware just how many electronic footprints they’re leaving behind, sometimes without even realizing it.

And doesn’t this line of reasoning make at least as much sense has anything she’s said?

  163. commonsense1 says:

Drones. The US Constitution requires a census be conducted. and it requires only a head count. Title 13 of the US Code governs how the census is to be conducted and does have provisions for refusal to answer the census.

Title 13,221 specifically addresses the penalty for “refusal to answer, to the best of his knowledge, any of the questions on any schedule submitted to him in connection with any census or survey provided for by subchapters I, II, IV, and V of chapter 5 of this title, applying to himself or to the family to which he belongs or is related, or to the farm or farms of which he or his family is the occupant, shall be fined not more than $100.”

I subject myself (and you all likely do as well) to $100+ fines daily by going 10 mph over the posted speed limit. Any questions other than head-count is unnecessary, and they can’t have my information. For that information, they can use Obama’s “sampling” process.

Coleman won the race on election day, but that was challenged repeatedly, over and over, with what we feel may be fraudulent vote [sic], and we’re very concerned about what comes forward.”

Wow! I know it’s hard to believe how someone like a Michele Bachmann gets elected. I live in her district and despite all of our hard work last year, she was re-elected (she didn’t win my county though!)

She was pretty wacko before the 2008 election. Before the HardBall incident, she barely surfaced on the national radar.

Howeve, all of us were well aware of her tendencies based on her stint in the state legislature.

My question to all of you who are baffled by how someone like a Bachmann gets elected, I point you to Tom Tancredo or Peter King (IA).

This is a very conservative district, not only socially but on economic issues. Those two couple together easily in the affluent areas in the district. In those less than affluent neighborhoods, where foreclosures and unemploymnet are rising, it’s a classic case of the social wedge issues causing folks to vote against their own best economic interest. This is the constituency I believe will finally see her for who she really is: a charlatan and opportunist. No one will ever convince these folks that a woman has a reproductive choice, or the earth wasn’t created in seven days or that President Obama is not after their guns. At some point, the screaming will stop. When it does and sanity returns, I believe we will have a more moderate representative. Could be a Republican or a Democrat. But as long as she puts herself out there, screeching and keeping that part of her base fired up, and we screech back, we will stay exactly where we are.

Since good ole Tom was my representative and replaced by his protege Mike Coffman (who’s ethics aren’t much better), I can tell you that these people represent upper middle class suburbia. People in these areas (or as I refer to them as “hell zones”) tend to be more conservative. In fact, one of my neighbors still has “Palin” on the back windows of his mini-vans. These are the same people that consider any one that didn’t vote for McCain “liberals” even though a number of Republicans didn’t vote the way they did.

The question is not how they got elected the first time, it’s how they continue to get re-elected over and over again. I personally think it’s time for the citizens of this country to rise up against the people that have decided that being in Congress is a lifetime appointment.

I must commend the commentators on this blog for their tolerance for an opinion that differs from the authors. I am also planning to answer only the questions related to the number of people living in my household and nothing else. It is my belief that giving anyone recruited by ACORN any personal information is granting license to steal an identity. The fact that the census taker will already have my ssn is terrifying. I was more comfortable answering census questions when Clinton was president.

To the person who quoted the Holy Bible related to the census that placed Mary and Joseph in Bethlehem, that census only asked for the number of people in the household, nothing more.

I am so glad there were no right wing nut jobs around when my grandmother was little, the census has been very helpful to me in my geneology research. She was born in 1908 and she was listed in the 1910 census along with her parents and brother and her mother’s brother of which our family had no knowledge that her mother had a brother, we are currently trying to track him. It would be great if her future generations would not be able to find information on her dumb ass.

LOL LOL you know I’m a flaming liberal hippie myself, But I do believe in a good balance of liberal and conservatives. It keeps us level. Seriously though how dose she keep getting elected??? It’s insanity.
