Boehner admits that stimulus will ‘create much-needed jobs.’

In the days before Congress voted on and President Obama signed the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH) repeatedly derided the legislation as “generational theft,” and declared, “When it comes to slow-moving government spending programs, it’s clear that it doesn’t create the jobs.” But as Media Matters Action Fund notes, Boehner has changed his tune. In a little-noticed statement released Monday, Boehner highlighted the Obama administration’s recent order that the Ohio Department of Transportation redirect $57 million to shovel-ready projects. Boehner admitted that such stimulus projects do, in fact, “create much-needed jobs“:

The stated intent of the so-called stimulus package was to create jobs, and certainly a $57 million slush-fund studying projects did nothing to achieve that goal. With Ohio’s unemployment rate the highest it’s been in 25 years, I’m pleased that federal officials stepped in to order Ohio to use all of its construction dollars for shovel-ready projects that will create much-needed jobs.

Yeah, but I’m sure Boehner would also tell you that Obama is a socialist who must be stopped at all costs. Way to go, GOP. Way to go.

As long as it’s not blow jobs for people like Boehner, Craig and Ensign.

Jim Cramer actually said that the reason the stimulus package wasn’t creating jobs was because the money was given to local unions. WHAT?

I wonder if Boehner has been feeling some pressure from that “highest unemployment rate in 25 years”.

It’s probably really going to kill him when jobs actually materialize from these funds.

    Health Care Reform D.O.A.?
    By Eric Etheridge

What’s the latest assessment from those closely monitoring health care reform? Prognosis negative.

“Health reform is, I think it fair to say, in danger right now,” wrote Ezra Klein this morning at the Washington Post.

“Attention fellow liberals who want health care reform,” wrote Jonathan Cohn yesterday at the New Republic. “You are in danger of losing the fight for universal health insurance. And it’s not only — or even primarily — because of the public plan.”

Nothin’ “progressive” here today, just more on the same lying liars and they are running cover for the dismantling of healthcare reform.

And it looks like the administration that can find billions and billions for wars, banks, and car companies is selling us out again.

I think we’re seeing a foreshadowing here of how R’s are going to play the economic recovery once it’s successful – by just forgetting they were against it. Whenever we start to wonder how they’re going to reconcile their past stance with a necessary future stance, we keep forgetting they have the power to just catch amnesia on it. Too bad there are all them pesky libs out there now putting their past statements on the Intertubes.

And this is by design by the Republics. Their obstruction is not because they oppose anything that Obama is doing. It is purely to throw road blocks in front of our President to make it look like he’s failing. Unfortunately for them recent polls show that Americans think it’s the Republic party that is failing, not the Democrats or President Obama.

Do you approve or disapprove of the way (ITEM) are doing their job?

    Approve/Disapprove
    a. The Democrats in Congress…..45/49
    b. The Republicans in Congress…30/64

    Here’s a better poll question:

    5. How much confidence do you have in [ITEM] to make the right decisions for the country’s future – a great deal of confidence, a good amount, just some or none at all?

    a. Obama………………60%
    b. The Republicans
    in Congress…………21%
    c. The Democrats
    in Congress…………36%

  33. mary lacewing says:

Another Joe – we discussed that issue this morning.

The status of the so-called ‘health reform’ measure is extremely discouraging and it would appear that the insurance company profits and executive compensation will remain outrageous with little to no change and that health insurance coverage will remain out of reach for many citizens.

But this thread is about Boehner’s flip-flop on whether or not the stimulus can create jobs.

  34. Xisithrus says:

With the recession and layoff many states have lost tax revenue and Ohio is no different

June 2009 Ohio State leaders reported April’s income tax revenue fell short of projections by $322 million—a decrease of 22 percent.

  35. har5125 says:

I maybe wrong, but from what I know of German pronunciation Boehner would be pronounced BEE-ner.

  36. ElBruce says:

Here’s a groovy thing where people are getting their Senators and Congresspersons on record as to whether they’ll support a public healthcare option. The numbers on this are startlingly good:

    http://standwithdrdean.com/where_congress_stands

The trouble is that the CBO numbers on Obama’s plan came back at $1.6T over ten years. Most were hoping to do it for under $1T. That $600B gap is going to be tough to make up; it would involve either slashing up the plan or drumming up a lot more support than is evident so far.

  37. Hoodathunktick says:

Bee-ner, Bay-ner…he’ll still always be a Boner. A teeny orange one, sort of like a lone, lost Cheeto.

As one of our trolls likes to say, SHOCKER!

  42. Another Joe says:

mary lacewing – no, the thread this morning was on chimpy and happened to mention healthcare.

Virtually all the post today are about what the lying liars say and none of them are about holding anyone accountable for actually BRINGING CHANGE.

  43. Another Joe says:

The point is, why focus only on the lying liars on the left and not talk about those that expected the support of progressives and liberals in the fall.

And now don’t seem to stand for a single thing they said.

Talking about anything else at this point, is a distraction – the repugs & faux have been marginalized.

What about holding the other side accountable too?

“Boehner admits that stimulus will ‘create much-needed jobs.’”

Ah, duh??? Ya think? Boehner is a boner. And the trash talk about Obama’s recovery plan, budget plan, and his vote with the Party of No against the recovery plan is certainly biting him in the butt.

    Good link ElBruce!

I filtered for my state, CT, and all of them support a public healthcare option except, drum roll please, Lieberman.

Holy crap, I went back to it, and found that one of my Senators, Ron Wyden (D-OR) a long-standing progressive, was still listed as “don’t know” to “do you support a public healthcare option?” Fortunately, I was able to send him a quick and easy message:

I was looking at the website:

    http://standwithdrdean.com/where_congress_stands

that tracks where each Congressman and Senator stands on supporting a public option for health care and was surprised to find you listed as “Don’t know.”

Really? Please let me know. Here are the four questions they require:

    * Do you support a public healthcare option as part of reform?
    * Do you support a public healthcare option that is ready on day one?
    * Do you support a public healthcare option that is national, available everywhere, and accountable to our government?
    * Do you support a public healthcare option that has the clout to establish rates with providers and big drug companies?

I had always thought of you as a leader on progressive issues and another reason to be proud to be an Oregonian, but your lack of a listed stance on this greatly concerns me. Please get on record as soon as possible. Thanks.

Hopefully his office will be able to update him soon. Wyden isn’t a guy that progressives usually have to worry about.
