Bush insinuates that he disagrees with Obama’s plan to close Gitmo.

In a speech to the Manufacturing and Business Association in Erie, PA last night, President Bush insinuated that he disagreed with President Obama’s plan to close the Guantanamo Bay prison and try some of the detainees in U.S. courts. “I’ll just tell you that there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat and I don’t believe that — persuasion isn’t going to work. Therapy isn’t going to cause terrorists to change their mind,” Bush said. But in June 2006, Bush endorsed a course of action quite similar to Obama’s current plan:

BUSH: I’d like to end Guantanamo. I’d like it to be over with. One of the things we will do is we’ll send people back to their home countries. [...] There are some who need to be tried in U.S. courts. They’re cold-blooded killers. They will murder somebody if they’re let out on the street. And yet, we believe there’s a — there ought to be a way forward in a court of law.

Further, as Jake Tapper notes, Bush’s remark that “therapy” won’t help rehabilitate some of the detainees is surprising given the fact that Bush himself sent approximately 120 former Guantanamo detainees to a Saudi-based counseling center for rehabilitation. 60 Minutes recently reported on the success of the Saudi program.

I’ll just tell you that there are people in our prisons who have received due process of law that will kill American people at the drop of a hat. What’s the difference?

Also, Bush has claimed at least three times that 100% of the people in Guantanamo are ebil terrorists, between rounds of releasing them because it turns out some of them weren’t. So why anybody should believe him now on this subject is beyond me.

George Bush = George Costanza. If he only had done the opposite of his natural instincts, he would have been a success.

  4. Zooey says:

    Shut up shuttin’ up, George.

Only trolls will hump your leg these days.

  5. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Talk about a “straw man” argument. Where has President Obama ever indicated that he was going to let Gitmo detainees loose on the American public? Besides, it seems to me I remember Bush saying that he had plans to eventually close Gitmo and also plans to try detainees in American courts. I am beginning to think that Bush is in the early stages of Alzheimers.

  7. hellinabucket says:

This may not necessarily be a bad thing. Not the content of what GWB says, but the fact he is getting back into the public eye.

I am of the opinion that there needs to be hearings on Gitmo, the rush to invade Iraq and the releasing of a Secret Agent’s identity to name a few. With the key figure raising his head again it will hopefully bring these, and other, needed inquiries.

So George, speak up. But this time be held accountable.

  8. misscoleopteramolly says:

Let’s not be too hard on Dubya — he can’t possibly see the incongruence of his remarks, because he’s just reading a script. Of course, this is pretty much what he did during the eight years he was in office, so he can’t be expected to remember what he said previously.

Apparently there isn’t a whole lot of brush to be cleared around his new Dallas digs. Can somebody find him a new hobby?

  9. hellinabucket says:

How about testifying before congress? That should fill up some time.

  10. Purple State says:

Bush is pretty much right in suggesting that therapy won’t change the minds of some terrorists.

    Neither will torturing them.

  11. Another Joe says:

    GREAT!

So when does this war criminal and the criminal cabal behind him get taken to Gitmo?

  12. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

hellinabucket, you raise an important consideration. I, too, think it’s good that former President Bush is speaking out. His words and his method of presenting them continue to show a stark contrast to the strenths of President Obama. Bush is the negative space that completes the picture of Obama.

the flood gates are open… all kinds of stoopid to follow…

    such as:

“I’ll just tell you that there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat and I don’t believe that — persuasion isn’t going to work.

    but TORTURE WILL???

  15. spring heeled jack says:

If we are ever able to have an honest discussion on this matter there should be a public accounting of exactly who is down there, the circumstances of their detainment, and what they are accused of.

Are any of these men even half the super villian boogeymen that BushCo so cavalierly warn us about?

  16. delafield says:

Bush says, “There are some who need to be tried in U.S. courts. They’re cold-blooded killers.”

When I think of cold-blooded killers who need to be tried in U.S. courts, three people come to mind…. George W. Bush, Dick Cheney, and Donald Rumsfeld.

  17. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Considering the fact that Bush released somewhere around 200 of them, I guess that says that they are not what he said they are.

  18. spencers mom says:

  19. ranus69 says:

Where is Condi Rice in all of this, she has not been seen or heard from since a 4th grader sent her under the bus? LOL

Ironic, that Bush spoke to the Manufacturing and Business Association in Erie, PA and yet over the course of his 8 awful adminatration years he all but obliterated the manufacturing industry.

  20. delafield says:

ranus69 says, “Where is Condi Rice in all of this, she has not been seen or heard from since a 4th grader sent her under the bus?”

Maybe all the Republican, hateful remarks toward African Americans finally got to Condi.

  21. johnny dol1ar says:

I agree with those supporting the idea of giving the Chimperor as much time and microphones as he wishes.

Soon he’ll repeat his classic gaffes of revealing more than he could have said under “priviledge,” followed by excuses by the GOPiggies and Fox News explaining what the Chimperor “really meant to say”

Say, Mr. Chimperor, now that you have an unfettered trap, tell us, Why did you allow OBL’s relatives to FLY out of the USA after 9/11?

Do you still hear voices of god telling you to spread Chimpocracy in the Middle East?

Are you organizing an independent search unit to find them WMDs?

How does that shitte sandwich taste? Some GOPiggies have called you a fake republican and conservative. How do you answer them?

Will you testify before Congress and the International Criminal Court?

  22. Keith H. says:

I’ll just tell you that there are people at Gitmo that will kill American people at a drop of a hat and I don’t believe that — persuasion isn’t going to work.

Well, Dumbya, I’ll just tell you that there are radical right-wing fundamentalist people in the U.S. that will kill American people at the drop of a hat. In fact, we’ve seen a few of them in action just in the last few weeks. And I don’t believe persuasion is going to work with them either…

  24. nanlichi says:

  25. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

We could put those Gitmo prisoners behind bars in a gated community, say in Dallas.

  26. SWBob says:

Ah yes, effectively dealing with the multitude of problems created and left by the cheney/bush mis-administration means listening to cheney/bush for solutions. By all means!

Is there any evidence that this is true, or is it just an assumption based on the assumptions made about the detainee? If you have evidence that the detainee in question has murdered an merican, then you ought to be able to try them in court. If you have no evidence that the detainee in question ever killed anyone, then you cannot assume he will and lock him forever because of that. That’s the way the law works. You’re imprisoned when you break the law, not just because someone (who has no way of knowing the truth) assumes that one day you will.

  29. po says:

Bush’s views on this, or any other subject he left for Obama to deal with are irrelevant. He obviously wasn’t up for fixing that which he broke. Why anyone should listen to his ‘thoughts’ on the subject now that he’s out of office is beyond me. He blew it. He failed. He didn’t deal with the problems he created. He just left them for the next guy and now all his supporters want to blame Obama for their failings.

  30. LizCoro says:

RAISE YOUR HAND if you thought this fool would just shut up and [cough, cough] work on ‘his book’ . .

And we also know that Bubble probably didn’t even know about the Saudi-based counseling center [otherwise, well, you know, duh] . .

Yeah stoopid, some “should be tried in Courts” but they can’t because they were TORTURED while you were POTUS!

OMG, who voted for this moron?

  31. tomcat27834 says:

NOW we have further understanding why George W. Bush stays behind the curtain…….just listen at the simple-minded logic that spews from his trap!

he is a complete and worthless imbecile!!!

After eight years what else can we expect.

  32. MapleStreet says:

    HUH ?

Ever heard of the “Therapeutic Milleu”?

So what kind of therapy did the therapists use to make the Gitmo detainess be just fine with being imprisoned without contact to the outside world and being tortured ?

And it the therapists are that good, why don’t we bring them here to deal with the soldiers with PTSD ?

I know the stoics claimed that you can be happy on the rack.

You just think you’re drowning, so it is really OK if you tell me about your mother ?????

The weed and booze affect Bush’s mind. Everytime Bush hits the airwaves, more forgetness come up from the little brain that he preserves. He wouldn’t know the word “truth” if it bit him in the butt. Isn’t there some chores for the former clown President to do such clearing the brush or picking up Barney’s poop?

  35. nanlichi says:

    LizCoro Says:

…..OMG, who voted for this moron?

I did LizCoro. Twice. And proudly.

The first was a poll asking who the worst POTUS ever was, the second was a poll asking who is most to blame for the fiasco in Iraq.

And if asked who I would like most to see with a rattlesnake hung on his ass, I will vote for Boy George again in a heartbeat.

  36. krystalview says:

“In a speech to the Manufacturing and Business Association in Erie, PA….”

My question continues to be; who – in their right mind – would invite this barbaric war criminal to speak?? Anywhere?
    What’s WRONG with these people?

There are only two instances any conscientious american citizen should gather to see GWB.
    1- A War Crimes Trbunal
    2- A perp walk.

Period! People who still support this terrorist and his mafia make me SICK to my stomach!

So you’re saying that George is less important than Dick or Liz? We’d suspected that already, but we never heard a wingnut say it out loud before.
