<blockquote>Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. </blockquote>

I'm positive a hamburger at Burger King is about 89 cents, last I checked, as I used to work at a BK. Either they purchased something like a double burger, or this is completely false.

Fifty Years of Math 1957 - 2007 (in the USA ) Last week I purchased a burger at Burger King for $1.58. The counter girl took my $2 and I was digging for my change when I pulled 8 cents from my pocket and gave it to her. She stood there, holding the nickel and 3 pennies, while looking at the screen on her register. I sensed her discomfort and tried to tell her to just give me two quarters, but she hailed the manager for help. While he tried to explain the transaction to her, she stood there and cried. Why do I tell you this? Because of the evolution in teaching math since the 1950s: 1. Teaching Math In 1950s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price. What is his profit ? 2. Teaching Math In 1960s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is 4/5 of the price, or $80. What is his profit? 3. Teaching Math In 1970s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80. Did he make a profit? 4. Teaching Math In 1980s A logger sells a truckload of lumber for $100. His cost of production is $80 and his profit is $20. Your assignment: Underline the number 20. 5.. Teaching Math In 1990s A logger cuts down a beautiful forest because he is selfish and inconsiderate and cares nothing for the habitat of animals or the preservation of our woodlands. He does this so he can make a profit of $20. What do you think of this way of making a living? Topic for class participation after answering the question: How did the birds and squirrels feel as the logger cut down their homes? (There are no wrong answers, and if you feel like crying, it's ok. ) 6. Teaching Math In 2009 Un hachero vende una carretada de maderapara $100. El costo de la producciones es $80. Cuanto dinero ha hecho.

Teaching should cater to the students' needs, not the needs of close-minded knee-jerk reactionaries who feel the need to find scapegoats for their own problems...You know I'm sick and tired of people like you SCAPEGOATING teachers who do a helluva more useful and needed job than some Wall Street ELITIST crook. I'm sick and tired of people like you who feel the need to demonize teachers and blame them for the problems that our schools face. Your drivel shows you know NOTHING about the education system. Before you spout out your ignorance and bigotry, why don't you actually see what's happening in the classroom, instead of relying on your nativist, wingnut, paranoid fantasies? Is that joke supposed to be funny? How come conservatives always feel the need to find humor only through "jokes" that play on stereotypes and our inner racism?

and when all is finally over...as a military man...if you are a queer...fine...just don't let us know!

Homo

Funny, I don't recall anyone asking you what you think about someone being gay. By the way, did you finally realize you use socialized health care yet?

Bitter old man (see I can do it too)

<em>About "don't ask/don't tell"...

"Yes and say he did it would then be ILLEGAL for gays to serve."

That's simply not true. This was a Clinton policy, it did not require any congressional approval. The president, using his constitutional powers as commander and chief of the US military, can allow gays to serve openly in the military if he so chooses. The military may not like it, congress may not like it, wingnuts and the anti-gay community may not like it but that's a political problem, not a legal or constitutional problem. The policy was created by executive order and could be undone the same way.
</em>

Not under the UCMJ. It doesn't work the same way as civilian law. Before the enactment of DADT it was illegal to be gay and serve in the military. What DADT did was may it "okay" so long as you don't say anything. There are underlying laws that forbid being gay in the military w/o DADT. President Obama only has the ability to stop reservist discharges on a case by case basis in a time of national emergency. To make a real lasting solution, Congress needs to amend the UCMJ otherwise the next President can just repeal the order.

<em>About military tribunals:

"let's see they can't have evidence gained by means of torture used against them. They get a choice when choosing an attorney... again, I was in the military I'm quite aware of how tribunals work and the differences in them now."

First off, Obama promised to end the tribunals. He has gone back on that promise and now says he needs more time to study the issue. He has promised some basic reforms such as limits on hearsay evidence and exclusion of statements obtained by means of torture but there is no real policy in place at the present time. What is in place now, is very similar to what was done under the previous president.
</em>

What's wrong with him having more time to study the issue? I'm glad he isn't just blazing ahead and doing everything without thought like Bush did. When tribunals are done right there is nothing wrong with them. I worked with some JAGs, YNs and LNs when I was being discharged and I'm quite aware of what's happened in tribunals.

<em>About those AIG bonuses:

"He was outraged and they did what they could legally. He didn't know what was going on and when he did, he did what he could."

Sorry but that just doesn't pass the smell test. We were in the middle of the biggest financial meltdown since the great depression. His Treasury Secretary was bailing out the banks, how could he not have known and if he didn't know, isn't that the least bit troubling to you? I mean, when this story broke, don't you think he picked up the phone and called Giethner? If Timmeh lied to him, don't you think that is in and of itself a major problem? What else isn't he telling the truth about? If Giethner didn't lie to him, Obama's feigned outrage has to be seen as at least dishonest.
</em>

No it didn't sit well with me that he didn't know but that's between him and his Secretary. His outrage worked. They got the bonuses back.

<em>About the detainee photos, I can't begin to know what you've experienced but that's rather beside the point. My point isn't the photos, I agree we probably shouldn't release them to the global media. What bothers me is his pattern. He said he would release them, he got pushback from the right, he caved. This is the same pattern we've seen time and again from him both during the campaign and during his first few months in office. He was going to filibuster FISA but instead voted for it, promising to fix it when he got into office. Since then, his administration has gone to court to support continued use of the powers he complained about during the campaign. He has a penchant for saying whatever the audience in front of him wants to hear. If the audience changes, so does the policy.</em>

My understanding was after careful consideration and advice from commanders in the military, he decided not to release them. He's allowed to change his mind, especially after hearing opposing opinions on the issue. I think he made the right decision. The detainees have been abused enough without their ordeal being plastered on TV and in the papers for all to see. I'm satisfied with the President's explanation.

As a psychologist I also look at the culture of the men that were abused. Men are supposed to be strong and to have endured what they has to be incredibly shameful culturally in addition to the shame already attached. I wish people would consider that rather then the cries for "justice".

He's going to make decisions we don't like. He'll change his mind when we don't want him to. I've always thought him to be a practical man who will listen to people even when it's something he doesn't want to hear. Things probably look a whole lot differently now that he's President versus on the campaign trail. It's easy to make promises before you know what you're getting into. We don't know what he knows.

Call me blind but I actually trust him. Being a psychologist I've learned to read people very well over my years of study and I don't think he's doing anything he does to upset people but rather what he thinks is best as opposed to Bush who I saw to be a puppet to Cheney's warmongering greed.

That being said, I do see your side to the argument and I'm afraid we probably won't agree with each other but that's okay. I'm glad we were able to discuss this in a mature manner. Thank you :)

He’s allowed to change his mind, especially after hearing opposing opinions on the issue. I think he made the right decision. The detainees have been abused enough without their ordeal being plastered on TV and in the papers for all to see. I’m satisfied with the President’s explanation.

As a psychologist I also look at the culture of the men that were abused. Men are supposed to be strong and to have endured what they has to be incredibly shameful culturally in addition to the shame already attached. I wish people would consider that rather then the cries for “justice”.

He’s going to make decisions we don’t like. He’ll change his mind when we don’t want him to. I’ve always thought him to be a practical man who will listen to people even when it’s something he doesn’t want to hear. Things probably look a whole lot differently now that he’s President versus on the campaign trail. It’s easy to make promises before you know what you’re getting into. We don’t know what he knows.

Call me blind but I actually trust him. Being a psychologist I’ve learned to read people very well over my years of study and I don’t think he’s doing anything he does to upset people but rather what he thinks is best as opposed to Bush who I saw to be a puppet to Cheney’s warmongering greed.

That being said, I do see your side to the argument and I’m afraid we probably won’t agree with each other but that’s okay. I’m glad we were able to discuss this in a mature manner. Thank you :)

Olberman's "boy" was placed in the white house? Correct me if I am wrong, but referring to a black man as "boy" is quite racist.

It's really great when wingnut racism is exposed for the world to see.

</em>
Based on what exactly? Maybe in a wingnut fantasy wet dream, but the reality is that in 2010 and 2012 the Republican Party will be further reduced in power. That's the reality check.

You wingnuts really need your own comedy channel cause you come up with some really funny shiz. Oh wait, Fox News serves as the wingnut comedy channel, I forgot.

kdgamergirl,

About "don't ask/don't tell"...

About military tribunals:

"let's see they can't have evidence gained by means of torture used against them. They get a choice when choosing an attorney... again, I was in the military I'm quite aware of how tribunals work and the differences in them now."

First off, Obama promised to end the tribunals. He has gone back on that promise and now says he needs more time to study the issue. He has promised some basic reforms such as limits on hearsay evidence and exclusion of statements obtained by means of torture but there is no real policy in place at the present time. What is in place now, is very similar to what was done under the previous president.

http://www.usnews.com/articles/news/obama/2009/05/15/obama-restarts-bush-era-military-tribunals.html

About those AIG bonuses:

About the detainee photos, I can't begin to know what you've experienced but that's rather beside the point. If the audience changes, so does the policy.

Body Odor's polls are going to continue to fall...and they will be lower then Carters where...prior to him being escorted out of office by the Great American President Reagan. What is really funny is that there will be such a backlash against him...Pelosi and Dingy Harry...that the DemocRATs will be totally out of power by 2012.

Enjoy the time while you have it...you are over playing your hands and the Moderates are finally waking up!

I suspect that the reason his ratings are as high as they are is because a lot of the people polled get their news from the internet. If broadcast news was really liberal, or even objective journalism, then he would probably have higher ratings, IMO.

Fox News (which Obama pettishly declined to name) is indeed a big megaphone -- big and getting bigger. And that's no accident. As I've written before, Fox is big because it speaks to an audience that doesn't feel its concerns represented elsewhere on TV (and, yes, because Roger Ailes is a pro at producing slick, loud, button-pressing programming in general). For Obama to turn his back on that audience because he doesn't feel like he gets a fair shake from Fox would be a mistake. He all but acknowledged that himself during the campaign, when he finally granted an interview to Bill O'Reilly after being hounded for months.

Obama did leave the door open for prosecution which is starting to happen now. What did you expect for Obama to come into office locking up the whole entire Bush regime? I would as most would have loved to see that but in reality and not the "alternative reality" things just don't happen like that.

<em>Kdgamergirl,

"detainee photos: sorry but I'm with the President on this one despite how much people disagree."

Were you with the president when he promised to release the photos? Because that's what he said he would do until Glen Beck and the republican noise machine attacked him for putting our soldiers at risk. </em>

Actually no I did not agree with their release then and I still don't. I've been raped. I know what it feels like and the shame that goes with it. Unless you've personally experienced it you cannot possibly know how the thought of having photos out feels. I'm also objecting as a veteran.

<em>"Gay Rights: his memorandam yesterday was all he could legally do with DOMA"

He could end "don't ask/don't tell" with a simple stroke of his pen if he had the will or the guts to fight. </em>

Yes and say he did it would then be <strong>ILLEGAL</strong> for gays to serve. There are underlying laws that need to dealt with that that is for Congress. The only thing he can do is stop them case by case that would be time consuming. Again, I lived under the UCMJ, I know very well how it works.

This is not the Bush administration. I don't want the President to override any law he sees fit. Congress should be dealing with that.

<em>"AIG Bonuses: what could he have done legally?

Again, he went on the TV to say how outraged he was and how he was going to to do everything in his power to stop them. That was until he learned Giethner and his team were well aware of these bonuses months before they became public. It's also interesting that he and his treasury department were so deeply concerned about not superceding contracts but a few short weeks later, had no problem ripping up bondholder contracts to award the lions share of GM's equity to the UAW.</em>

He was outraged and they did what they could legally. He didn't know what was going on and when he did, he did what he could.

<em>"GITMO: being closed... blame Congress for the delays"

I'll believe it when it actually happens. Again, his history when facing conflict is to run in the opposite direction. Let's see what happens.</em>

Already an executive order making it closed by a certain date. If Congress decides to fund the closing and the detainees are dealt with we have no reason to believe it won't be closed.

<em>"Tribunals: there is nothing wrong with tribunals when done properly"

Obama's tribunals are exactly the same as under Bush. Only the language has changed. </em>

let's see they can't have evidence gained by means of torture used against them. They get a choice when choosing an attorney... again, I was in the military I'm quite aware of how tribunals work and the differences in them now.

<em>"There are plenty of avenues to voice concerns and calling people names and accusing them of being uninformed simply because they don't agree with you anger is counterproductive and childish."

I'm not sure I know what you mean. I called no one any names and, after reading what I posted two or three times I don't see it as angry or childish. I'm just saying that the economy is far from out of the woods and that Obama hasn't stood his ground and fought for a position very often. </em>

I apologize if you thought I meant you here. I thought I mentioned that I didn't but again I'm sorry if we had a misunderstanding. I was more referring to people who love to whine and complain but don't do anything beyond that. We have means to contact the administration and our representatives and instead of using those means, people tend to complain to others who can't do anything.

My main point is and has always been, the man has had the Presidency for five months. That is not nearly enough time to say he's broken promises or should have every little thing done. Any reasonable person knows that cleaning this mess up with take time and some things won't change right away.

“detainee photos: sorry but I’m with the President on this one despite how much people disagree.”

Were you with the president when he promised to release the photos? Because that’s what he said he would do until Glen Beck and the republican noise machine attacked him for putting our soldiers at risk.

Actually no I did not agree with their release then and I still don’t. I’ve been raped. I know what it feels like and the shame that goes with it. Unless you’ve personally experienced it you cannot possibly know how the thought of having photos out feels. I’m also objecting as a veteran.

“Gay Rights: his memorandam yesterday was all he could legally do with DOMA”

He could end “don’t ask/don’t tell” with a simple stroke of his pen if he had the will or the guts to fight.

Exit Stage Left Says:
ranus69:
Since Obama has shown neither the desire or willingness to prosecute torture/war crimes, the republics don't have to say NO. In the case of torture, Obama is saying it for them. And THAT is unacceptable to me.
=========
Obama did leave the door open for prosecution which is starting to happen now. What did you expect for Obama to come into office locking up the whole entire Bush regime? I would as most would have loved to see that but in reality and not the "alternative reality" things just don't happen like that.

It's only been 6 months and to early to judge at this point.
