Krauthammer concedes Fox News is the ‘voice of opposition’ to Obama ‘in the media.’

In an interview with CNBC this week, President Obama noted the constant criticism he receives from Fox News, saying, “I’ve got one television station that is entirely devoted to attacking my administration.” Some Fox regulars, like Bill O’Reilly, adamantly objected to Obama’s claim. But on Special Report yesterday, Fox contributor Charles Krauthammer admitted that Fox News can “accurately” be described as the “voice of opposition” to Obama:

KRAUTHAMMER: But what’s really interesting, the president yesterday has said, he complained about FOX, and he said, I think accurately, that it is the one, only voice of opposition in the media.

And it makes us a lot like Caracas where all the media, except one, are state run, with the exception that in Hugo Chavez-land, you go after that one station with machetes. I haven’t seen any machetes around here, so I think we are at least safe for now.

Watch it:

Krauthammer isn’t the only person at Fox who views the network as working in opposition to Obama. In March, Bill Shine, Fox News’ Senior Vice President for Programming, told NPR that the network views itself as “the voice of opposition on some issues” with Democrats in power in Washington, DC.

Transcript:

KRAUTHAMMER: Well, look, the media are so in the tank, really, they ought to get scuba gear about this president.

But what’s really interesting, the president yesterday has said, he complained about FOX, and he said, I think accurately, that it is the one, only voice of opposition in the media.

And it makes us a lot like Caracas where all the media, except one, are state run, with the exception that in Hugo Chavez-land, you go after that one station with machetes. I haven’t seen any machetes around here, so I think we are at least safe for now.

But the rest of the media are entirely in the tank, and it’s embarrassing. You would think it would be embarrassment that would deter them.

Obama does u-turns on all kinds of policies — on taking money in campaigns, on rendition, on eavesdropping, on all kinds of issues, and the press does a u-turn, a whiplash u-turn in step.

In the end, what you have to could conclude is that it is, in part, ideological infinity with Obama, but also in part, he’s a rock star, and he sells. So it isn’t only ideology. It is greed. If you have him on the cover, he sells.

And that is the only defense that the mainstream media have, and it isn’t a pretty one — money.

Oh, it does not either. Would you care to explain which of our major media are “state run”? Just because we have broadcast and print media who aren’t dedicated to bashing the President 24/7 doesn’t mean they are beholden to him or his administration.

Furthermore, Fox News isn’t the only outlet who has criticized President Obama or done negative reporting about him. So get over the “lone voice in the wilderness” crap.

I’m getting a bit sick and tired of Republicans who compare themselves to people in the world who are genuinely oppressed. Conservatives are not Holocaust victims, Guantanamo torture victims, disenfranchised Iranians, or silenced Venezuelans.

Oh, and one more thing — if the role of Fox News is to be “the voice of opposition”, why did they adopt this role only after Obama was elected? It seems their role before that was “the voice of cheerleading and endless sucking up”. Let’s call Fox News what it is — “the voice of the rabid right”.

If the implication here is that Venezuelans have a one sided, pro-government media, this is false. This is unsurprising coming from a professional propagandist like Krauthammer.

From Mark Weisbrot, “Eyes Wide Shut: The International Media Look at Venezuela”:

“But then there is the Venezuelan reality, which is what Chavez and his government really care about. While most Americans and Europeans can be swayed by their one-sided media, Venezuelans get to hear both sides of this story. Venezuelans can turn on their TV and see extremely harsh criticism of their government every day. They can turn on their radio and find the airwaves actually dominated by anti-government “news” broadcasting. They can walk to a newsstand and find that most of the biggest newspapers are also dominated by anti-government reporting.”

The issue is not that FOX News is critical of Obama. The issue is that they are critical simply to be critical. Their boss (Ailes) as publicly acknowledged that their main mission shall be to criticize Obama’s policies, no matter what they are, and hence they have lost all objectivity.

They have reduced themselves to be a propaganda tool for the conservative base. That is certainly their right, but they lose the right to claim “fair and balanced” and to behave self-righteous and indignant when called out on it.

You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means.

    Parse:

    transitive verb
1 a: to resolve (as a sentence) into component parts of speech and describe them grammatically
b: to describe grammatically by stating the part of speech and explaining the inflection and syntactical relationships
2: to examine in a minute way : analyze critically
    intransitive verb
1: to give a grammatical description of a word or a group of words
2: to admit of being parsed

So what are you trying to say here? Because I just don’t get it.

My whole world has been turned upside down!!!! HOW CAN THIS BE? I thought WE were the majority……Oh! How must we feel?

Our friend should really stop slapping his bastinado, and learn to read.

For the week of February 9-15, 2009, Brian Williams’ broadcast averaged 9.444 million total viewers, compared with Gibson’s 8.187 million and Katie Couric’s 6.750 million total viewers.

    as compared to:

Overall, Fox News averaged 1.2 million viewers during the entire first quarter.

I’d suggest that “Check Reality at the Door” learn to read, but I suspect that’s a lost cause.

My whole world has been turned upside down!!!! HOW CAN THIS BE? I thought WE were the majority……Oh! How must we feel?

    Me? I feel great!

I know that I can get my news from ABC, CBS, NBC, MSNBC, CNN, HLN…the list is pretty long, and there are plenty of places to choose from.

Conservatives…well, they only have Fox. Oh, and Pajamas TV.

So I look at it in a commercialized sense. Let’s say a product was sold in a red and blue version. The red version was sold at only one store, while the blue version was sold in six stores.

The way I see it, I can get my blue product at more stores. If I wanted the red product, I have only one store. My guess is that you’d see better sales at that one store versus the other individual stores, buuuuuut…the blue product could be actually selling better when the total sales are viewed.

So you keep it up with those SCOREBOARD! chants. Me, I’ll be watching the not-Fox channel.

  98. ElBruce says:

Comparing FAUX News to cable news channels is like comparing it to the Home Shopping Network. It ain’t the same thing, so the comparison isn’t relevant.

In fact, it would be more appropriate to compare its ratings to E!

FAUX News is “news entertainment” in much the same way that pro wrestling is “sports entertainment.” It looks kind of like the thing it’s pretending to be, except without all the boring rules and truth and stuff.

THanks for your concern, Slappy, but the issue was RC’s claim that “Fox is kicking all the other news outlets combined!!!!”

If you’re honest with yourself, you must recognize that RC made no distinction between broadcast and cable outlets, and broadcast networks certainly have to be considered “news outlets”, right?

  107. CageyCretin says:

Now, now… it would not be effective propoganda if the sheeple enamored by it actually questioned its validity on any point. As soon as propoganda is questioned, it fails. So, in regards as to effective propoganda, FOX has done a stellar job with those who do tune in regularly (however, those claiming great ratings, or even good ratings, are assimilating in their claims those people who just tune in to one or two shows that they like, that are not part of the propoganda — thus, to claim that the ‘ratings’ show popularity and thus validate the “news” or “commentary” content as having merit are being even more dishonest as they assimilate as part of their data an unknown number who do not ever watch those “news” shows that they claim the ‘ratings’ validate).

To add to your post Bilbo, the ONLY demographic that FAUX leads in consistently within the cable news realm is with the older and dying off geriatric crowd. MSNBC and CNN consistently beat FAUX in the more important 18-35 year old crowd. You know, the people responsible for the downfall of the Reich Wing. Keep squawking trolls, you only help prove the point that those on the right in the media, in Washington or on the blogs will do and say anything to smear the President. Look, it’s very nice that you have a TV channel that looks like a news channel but which solely exists to make you feel good about your existing political biases. Have fun with that. But stop trying to compare it to real news channels. You’re just being ridiculous.

FAUX News makes no attempt to conduct journalistic fact-checking or evenhandedness. They run with whatever propaganda makes their wingnut audience feel good about believing what they believe. They avoid mention of anything that might upset the delicate balance their viewers require in order to continue to believe such outrageous and insane things.

This is a pretty common tactic – describe your worst qualities, and then switch the names to your enemies. When we point out that you’re the real offender, the entire thing dissolves into a “no u” argument. That way you can fend off any criticism as a he-said/she-said sort of thing. You do the same thing with fascism and racism.
