Rohrabacher: Gingrich Belongs In The ‘Hall Of Shame’ For His Fear-Mongering On Uighur Detainees

Last month in the Washington Examiner, former House speaker Newt Gingrich denounced President Obama’s supposed plot to “release trained terrorists currently held at Guantanamo Bay into American suburbs.” The men he was so afraid of are innocent Chinese Muslims known as Uighurs, who have since been released in Bermuda after spending seven years locked up in Guantanamo. According to 2008 State Department Human Rights report, these men faced “severe cultural and religious repression” at the hands of the Chinese government. In 2001, they stayed in a Uighur camp in Afghanistan and “were later turned in to the authorities by Pakistani villagers in return for an American bounty,” even though were never a security threat.

However, in his column, Gingrich said they posed a “paramount threat and “have been allied with and trained by al Qaeda-affiliated terrorist groups.” In an interview with Fox News, Gingrich added that the United States should just send them back to China.

One of Gingrich’s Republican colleagues is now calling out his ignorance. At a House Foreign Affairs subcommittee on Human Rights on Tuesday, Rep. Dana Rohrabacher (R-CA) said that Gingrich belongs in the “hall of shame” for fear-mongering about the Uighurs. He also said that the Bush administration unjustly detained these men at the bidding of the Chinese government in a “pathetic” attempt to gain the country’s support for the Iraq war:

The Bush administration…held Uighurs in Guantanamo as terrorists, and they did this, I believe, to appease the Chinese government in a pathetic attempt to gain its support at the beginning of the war against Iraq, and also to ensure China’s continued purchase of U.S. treasuries. Many, if not all, the negative allegations against the Uighurs, can be traced by to Communist Chinese intelligence, whose purpose is to snuff out a legitimate independence movement that challenges the Communist party bosses in Beijing. [...]

In the hall of shame, of course, is our former speaker, Newt Gingrich. His positioning on this should be of no surprise — and is of no surprise — to those of who, during Newt’s leadership, were dismayed by his active support for Clinton-era trade policies with Communist China.

Watch it:

Through their translator, the Uighurs have expressed dismay at Gingrich’s ignorant remarks. “How could he speak in such major media with nothing based in fact?” related the translator. As many human rights experts noted, the Uighurs would likely have been tortured if returned to China, as Gingrich had hoped.

Transcript:

ROHRABACHER: And also, right off the bat, I’d like to express my deep appreciation to the leader in Bermuda — it’s Premier Brown — for his courage to do what is morally right in this situation. He’s demonstrated, I think, the best of democracy. That’s what leadership is all about: being willing to take such tough stands. I’m sorry that our own leadership here at home, and even in my own party, seems lacking at this moment. [...]

Much to my dismay, some pundits in the Republican party have fallen for this bait and are lumping the Uighurs in with Islamic extremists. The Bush administration did not help matters. It held Uighurs in Guantanamo as terrorists, and they did this, I believe, to appease the Chinese government in a pathetic attempt to gain its support at the beginning of the war against Iraq, and also to ensure China’s continued purchase of U.S. treasuries. Many, if not all, the negative allegations against the Uighurs, can be traced by to Communist Chinese intelligence, whose purpose is to snuff out a legitimate independence movement that challenges the Communist party bosses in Beijing.

No patriot, especially no Republican who considers themselves a Reagan Republican, should fall for this manipulation, which has us do the bidding of a dictatorship in Beijing.

In the hall of shame, of course, is our former speaker, Newt Gingrich. His positioning on this should be of no surprise — and is of no surprise — to those of who, during Newt’s leadership, were dismayed by his active support for Clinton-era trade policies with Communist China.

Amazing! Every once in a while some of the otherwise braindead Republicons actually says something that comes close to being close to truth.

Gotta give Rohrenbacher credit for this one.

Good ole Newt! You gotta love him. Everytime he speaks, thousands of independant voters flee! I love this crap. When your leaders are Gingrich, Limbaugh, and Darth Chaney you pretty much don’t have a future.

  8. Tired Of Fighting says:

Mr. Rohrabacher has said to many outrageous things in the past, so him saying this does nothing for his lack of credibility, and so he does not deserve any positive response, give him a minute and he’ll back to his usual dumbassery.

Considering this is the same guy that called Obama a “cream puff” for not going off like a Vicodin-crazed radio host about the Iranian protests, I’d say that I’m not prepared to give this guy that much credit.

Oh, come on TP – it’s almost the weekend… I was hoping to make it through the last hour of the day without a major psychological conundrum. Are you seriously telling me that Dana “Shit Puff” Rohrabacher and I actually AGREE on something?

Congratulations, Amanda. You’ve officially broken my brain with this cognitive whiplash.

“Fact” is not a word found in the Republic Fascist (formerly known as Republican) or conservative lexicon.

  15. Marie says:

Inside their dark and dim brains, there is an occasional spark of a thought – it is pretty amazing that a dim bulb like Rohrabacher calls out Gingrich on his demagoguery and outright lies.
Says something about Rohrabacher, but it says a lot more about Gingrich.

  16. krazeeinjun says:

At the risk of inducing nausea and self-loathing in myself, I state unequivocally — Dana Rohrabacher is correct.

Now excuse my while I go take some Pepto-bismol and a Prozac and lay down for awhile.

  18. mary lacewing says:

I could talk about how our leaders really should know a lot more about the world we live in before they start spouting nonsense, but, I’ll just leave you with this from the Daily Show (sorry about the ad at the beginning).

  20. liberalinaredstate says:

Newt, his name alone says volumes about his character. This is just one more reason why Bush needs to stay completely away from giving his opinion on anyone or anything.

  21. Bob says:

The whole thing is pretty disgusting. Although it’s good to hear a fellow repub chastise his colleague, innocent people were imprisoned and tortured and no one has been held accountable.

  24. krystalview says:

“How could he speak in such major media with nothing based in fact?”

The dawn of the Corporate Media was the death of credibility in America’s newsrooms. I speak from personal experience, I spent 10 years in a newsroom fighting (in vain) for TRUTH.

  25. Mathazar says:

To me this is pure posturing.

Rohrabcher has been speaking out a lot lately. Could it be he
has his eyes on the prize ?

  26. APEC not OPEC says:

Rohrabacher was also a cheerleader for the release of Border Patrol agents Ramos and Campion. He wanted Bush to give them a Pardon.

  27. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

That’s who the Republics are. People who speak about things they know nothing in order to somehow make their point. And usually they lie while doing it.

If you took away lies, obfuscations and cherry picking from the Republics, they would not be able to utter a word.

  28. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    P.D. Says:

Good ole Newt! You gotta love him. Everytime he speaks, thousands of independant voters flee! I love this crap. When your leaders are Gingrich, Limbaugh, and Darth Chaney you pretty much don’t have a future.

It’s not just independents who are fleeing. Republics are fleeing their own party to become Independent and in come cases Democrats.

This from the recent WSJ poll shows how much trouble they are in. The question was about their party affiliation.

    Not very strong Republican……..7
    Strong Republican ……………14

Still only 21% calling themselves Republics and only 14% said they are strong Republics. Another 7% say they are not very strong Republic. Add that to the recent poll that showed 33% of Republicans were not happy with the way their party is heading, the Republic party is in big trouble. They stand to lost that 7% who are weak Republics if they keep going they way they are going now.

  29. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

You mean the border patrol agents who shot two Mexicans in the back as they were running away? That always bothered me how anyone could think they were justified at shooting unarmed men in the back.

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:

You mean the border patrol agents who shot two Mexicans in the back as they were running away? That always bothered me how anyone could think they were justified at shooting unarmed men in the back.

Actually, it was one Mexican drug dealer who was shot in the buttocks. He was brought back from Mexico, given free medical treatment, immunity, his family was given Visas, he was arrested again for bringing drugs in,and the prosecutor witheld evidence during the trial. The agents were given severe sentences 12 and 13 years. They were supposed to be kept away from the general population but were not. One was beaten severely by other inmates and required extensive medical treatment.

Tell your children to wipe their feet when coming back in from the bins. If you wouldn’t leave your car running so long in the morning before going to work, the garage floor wouldn’t be so sooty.
They’re scared of all the mutilated blow up dolls you leave in the Plastics Only bin.

  35. krystalview says:

Smack! Ahhh! Boy that Kool-Aid is sweeeeeeet!

Climate change is a complexed multi-layered subject with mostly scientific principles.
When you begin a comment by calling Global Warming a “cult”, it becomes blatantly obvious that you do NOT have the mental capacity to absorb and process any kind of logical debating.
It would be a waste of energy to explain anything logical to you.

So go ahead with your shallow, meaningless little life.
I feel very sad for your children!

  36. pastcaring says:

I feel sad that you seem to support an ideology, the practitioners of which have been responsible for untold death and misery around the world for the last 35 years–give or take…Milton Friedman is dead…matches nicely with his death invoking ideas and ideals…

  37. wiley says:

Cato? Bwa-ha-ha-ha-ha. You think that’s really something don’t you? Why would a blog associated with CAP be impressed by CATO? We got our own think-tank. Buzz off with the Libertarian drivel. If we wanted to be Libertarian we wouldn’t be Progressive, now would we?

  41. krystalview says:

From the very first post this troll showed his true ignorance. I’ve studied Climate Change for 20 years. The science is rock solid and accepted worldwide.
The “deniers” operate with the “reptilian brain”. They are not capable of independent, rational thinking. They are a waste of Earth’s resources.
The silver lining is that their numbers are dwindling.

  42. wiley says:

It seems that the reduced numbers results in a stupid concentrate among the remains.

  43. pastcaring says:

wiley, it seems that it’s a strange distillation of ignorance…becoming more rancid with the passage of time…

  44. cdwriteme says:

I wish I could believe that Dana was doing the right thing, but, I think him being from California and wanting Asian-American votes has more to do with it (which, still, is better than nothing).

  45. fleetw1978 says:

Damn, what’s up with Dana? He’s gonna have to apologize next week. You know you can’t speak truth the GOP power base. Someone should ask Dana if he would approve of the released Uighur’s hanging out in his district instead of Bermuda? That would show if he is really sincere. I doubt it, just another chickenhawk.

  46. wisdomofwords says:

Don’t let this food ya. Once Limbaugh slaps Dana in the back of the head a couple of times, he’ll be praising whatever else Gingrich has to say.

  47. EugeneDebs says:

    FreeMarketLiberal

Congratulations you managed to make an ignorant post that was both off topic AND delusionally regurgitating a few of the stupidest talking points of all time. Ok we get the message. You are brainwashed stupid and pathetic

  48. EugeneDebs says:

    FreeMarketLiberal Says:

Of course you expected personal attacks. You are trolling. You posted an ignorant substance free post. There wasnt any other response it deserved. Extra troll points for being so irony impaired you talk about progressive koolaid when you are so brainwashed it is doubtful you have ever had an original thought in your enitre life.

  49. EugeneDebs says:

    FreeMarketLiberal Says

You are a VERY stupid troll. FML. Very stupid. In your case your brainwashing obviously takes place in a thimble

  50. MapleStreet says:

No. Gingrich doesn’t belong in the Hall of Shame for this one isolated statement on the detainees.

Gignrich deserves a special place in the Hall of Shame for his long and consistent list of reprehensible statements and fear mongering.

  51. Texas Aggie says:

the Uighurs would likely have been tortured if returned to China, as Gingrich had hoped.

This actually may be a Freudian slip. The sentence as written suggests that Gingrich wants the Uighurs to be tortured, and knowing what we do about Newt, that may actually be the case. He is that kind of a person.

  52. Texas Aggie says:

    FML,

Have you actually read the link you made to the Cato Institute about global warming? If you have and accept that as being anywhere in the realm of reality, then you need to go back to school and major in the physical sciences. Their screed was a masterpiece of sleight of hand with changing definitions and significant problems with their analysis left unmentioned. It by no means has any business being quoted by a scientifically literate person.

  53. J Murph says:

Things look bad when the Grand ole Potty is represented by
