The Huffington Post’s Nico Pitney, who has been liveblogging the Iranian protests all week, reports that an Iranian blogger alleges that the football players who wore green wristbands earlier this week in support of the protests have been suspended. The National Iranian American Council’s blog translates a tweet from Iranian Twitter user “Iranbaan,” a source they trust, who wrote, “The soccer players who were wearing green wristbands in the Iran-South Korea game have been suspended.”

And I bet each and every one of those brave players was thinking about one thing: how similar their situation was to the House Republicans having the lights shut off on them or having their amendments limited by the despotic Democrats.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:42 amAnd I fear that the possible actions against them could also be far worse. They really showed some guts.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:44 amSuspended, but totally worth it.

– - So the Iranian regime has a lot in common with the NFL hierarchy.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:48 amThe Iranian people won’t be held down. Check out this moving video I found on Nico’s liveblogging:
The haunting sound of revolution.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:49 amLet’s just hope that we see these brave souls again… and that their ’suspension’ doesn’t become permanent.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:51 amBrave act that they are fighting and standing for what they believe in.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:52 amSo how do they expect to win with that many players off the field?
You know, it occurs to me there’s not much you could do to piss off the Iranian populace more than to throw the World Cup, which is what this decision would effectively do.
June 19th, 2009 at 11:57 amWould the players have been suspended if the team wasn’t already eliminated from playing for the World Cup?
June 19th, 2009 at 12:07 pmIranian soccer players wearing of the Green. Is it late St. Patrick’s Day in North Korea? No, it’s the second Iranian Revolution even as the Supreme Leader is declaring his rigged election as “Absolute Victory.”
Meanwhile, back in the good ole USofA, we are preparing to defend Hawai’i (seized in an imperial grab back in 1898) from a blustering threat from the land where Iranian soccer players were wearing of the Green. Will the circle be unbroken? Round and round we go…

South Korea is invading Hawaii? Holy crap!
June 19th, 2009 at 12:24 pmWait!
June 19th, 2009 at 12:55 pmThey’re still alive?
Amazing.

___________
Oh yes. There should be no surprise there. South Koreans are still extremely angry over a Honolulu jury awarding $8 million in a lawsuit against pop star Rain over a cancelled concert in 2007.
June 19th, 2009 at 12:56 pmThat was chilling, Zooey.
The bravery exhibited by protesters should not be underestimated. They are not in the US, and they can be jailed or even executed for protesting, which means that they are risking their lives just to be able to express their political opinion.
That is sad, and tragic, as far as I am concerned. But what is inspiring is that they are willing to risk their lives so their voices can be heard. I have said for a long time that you can’t force democracy on people. If people are not willing to stand up, fight for, and potentially die for, their own freedoms, then they are not prepared to be free. Clearly, the Iranians are prepared to be free.
June 19th, 2009 at 1:37 pmFixed that for you…
June 19th, 2009 at 1:39 pmOnly leftest turds could somehow think to make jokes about these brave people. At least these players have balls…which is more then can be said of B.O.!

The NFL hierarchy would be doing cartwheels if any of their star players could show selflessness to social need(s) above self-promotion on the field without any gesture or reference to god.
It would get all the sports highlight shows something to talk about other than Chad Ochouhoh and how the Cowboys f’ed up, once again.
June 19th, 2009 at 5:02 pm“Reality” Check still can’t comprehend. Poor thing.
June 19th, 2009 at 5:22 pmGood cop/bad cop routine with Thatsnotfunny and RealityCheck?
June 19th, 2009 at 8:31 pmThe real shame there is that after half time, the WHOLE TEAM didn’t put on the wristbands.
June 19th, 2009 at 9:07 pmI guess there is an I in team if it’s spelled in Farsi.
Stand together or hang separately boys!
OH PLEASE, you concern troll…i bet back in some earlier threads about Iran, you wanted to nuke the whole country…
June 19th, 2009 at 9:11 pmThis action by Iran’s contolling leadership is equatable to the GOP’ers denegrating people as unAmerican for not wearing an American flag pin (made in China) on their lapel. Voting against war funding for Iraq was unpatriotic.
(Although the Republicans all voted NO on military funding for Afganistan).
Iran’s Ayatolla has more in common with republicans of the last 8 years than most want to acknowledge and accept.
“With us or against us” ??? Remember………..
