House GOP rush to a microphone to criticize Obama immediately following passage of Iran resolution.

With a 405-to-1 vote, the House passed a non-binding resolution expressing support for the pro-democracy demonstrators in Iran. Despite the unobjectionable text of the resolution, the manner in which Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN) promoted the resolution in recent days left no doubt that his motive was to score political points. As further evidence that House Republicans were playing politics with this resolution, Pence and a host of his conservative colleagues lept to the microphones immediately after the resolution was passed to bash President Obama and sing the praises of Ronald Reagan. Watch a compilation:

Rep. Ron Paul (R-TX) was the only no vote, while Reps. Brad Ellsworth (D-IN) and David Loebsack (D-IA) voted present. Sens. Joe Lieberman (R-CT) and John McCain (R-AZ) plan to introduce the same resolution in the Senate.

  10. ralph the wonder locust says:

It’s interesting that Republicans so frequently confuse “repression” for “Oppression”.

Repression is defined as: : a mental process by which distressing thoughts, memories, or impulses that may give rise to anxiety are excluded from consciousness and left to operate in the unconscious

It’s not the political subjugation of a group or class of people.

It DOES, however, align with much of the psychology of the Republican Party.

  12. ranus69 says:

The Repukelicans really want to “meddle” want to influence Iran’s election’s and than blame Obama later if it all fails. They really want to start another war again to distract and take the important issues facing America. All they know is war? They can’t solve anything, they say no to everything.

Pence what’s your solution for helping the people of Indiana? BTW your time is almost up in Indiana.

Are there that many “dumb” people that really take the GOP seriously?

  13. paleolib says:

They sang the praises of Ronnie “Iran-Contra” Raygun? I know a lot of americans have a three minute attention span but it’s not a good idea to bring up St. Ronnie in a manner that makes it so easy to remember a flagrantly illegal act that probably would have toppled his administration had most people not assumed he was already senile and didn’t know what North, Poindexter et al. were doing.

  16. PatrioticLiberalChristianMantisReligiosa says:

If this was an attack on Obama, it was awfully lame. While I would have enjoyed the Democrats mocking this pathetic grandstanding with some obstructionist tactics of their own, I could also argue that it was not a battle worthy of joining. The Republicans don’t gain much and the Democrats can counter by saying they didn’t play the obstructionist, attention seeking game.

  17. ralph the wonder locust says:

    Oh, and, guys…?

I know you love everything about your saint and protector Ronnie Reagan, but… he’s been dead for a few years. And it’s been twenty since he was in power. And a couple more since he had full control of his cognitive faculties.

Just sayin’… invoking the Patron saint of Reaganonmics might not be the best way to convince America that you’ve got something to offer for the future.

The first American President to meddle in Iran was Dwight Eisenhower, a Republican, who directed the CIA to help the British overthrow the Iranian democracy in 1953 and replace it with the vile torturing dictator Shah.

The second American President to meddle in Iran was Ronald Reagan. First he did the arms-for-hostages deal with new Revolutionary government of Iran, which violated many American laws and which essentially was treasonous. Then he armed Saddam, the dictator of Iraq with poison gas WMD and egged him on to attack Iran in an attempt to destroy their Revolution. This vile war of aggression lasted some eight years.

Now we hear from knee-jerk right-wing Republicans who claim to be concerned about free elections in Iran. Where were these Republican big-mouths in 2000, 2002 and 2004 when Republicans were hacking, rigging, fixing, Diebolding and stealing our elections?

  49. CageyCretin says:

Whew!! Gald THAT got done. I was worried if congress was EVER going to get that non-binding resolution through, indicating that those individual congress people (and not necessarily their constituents) support some Iranian democracy… or whatever.

That there is THE MOST IMPORTANT THING congress had to do, and now the senate needs to prioritize this to the top of the list.

We owe it to Iran for stepping in when we had quesitons about our electorial process, and they supported us and helped us determine the accuracy of our democratic process, ensuring that the votes were correctly counted (like in Florida — remember all the Iranin re-counters brought in?). We were SO glad for all their aid and resolutions and advice in our democratic process, and now we get to return the favor.

    ….

    ….

…that IS why they are doing this, right?

Otherwise it would just be political posturing whose ONLY REAL EFFECT could be to anger some elements of Iran (a soverign nation)while garnering a measure of appeasemant to some other elements in Iran, and consequently damaging our foreign relations with the country regardless of the results, possibly making political enemies in the process — as well as undercutting the foreign policy strategy that the President of the United Stats has chosen to adopt.

Even more important is that while we blog about this crap, obama and the dems are selling us out on healthcare (from TPM):

New Health Care Draft Leaves Out Public Option
The Washington Post reports that a new draft health-care proposal from the Senate Finance Committee includes an individual mandate expands Medicaid coverage — and leaves out the public option: “Yesterday, Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-Mont.) met with four Republicans, including Sen. Charles Grassley (Iowa), the ranking GOP member on the panel, along with two Democratic colleagues in an attempt to find bipartisan consensus. Baucus dubbed the group ‘the coalition of the willing.’”

  54. WAYNEBRO says:

I stand with the President 100 percent on this one. The House democrats once again show us why the Bush administration ruled for 8 years, and still hold power from behind the scenes. Because they are weak, spineless and nothing more than puppets to their republican puppet masters.

President Obama has made it clear that the US needs to keep its nose out of Iranian affairs when it comes to elections, etc. This is a matter for the Iranians to deal with, not ours. It was out of wisdom that he chose a hands off approach, so as to avoid the very appearance of US “meddling”. This was a wise move that has been praised by elder statesmen as the only reasonable approach.

This resolution was a slap in the face of the President merely to score cheap political points for the republicans, and of course the democrats played right along as they always do. As if they had no power of their own. Or mind of their own for that matter.

Mir-Hossein Mousavi is no huge friend to the west, and while he is “slightly” better than Mahmoud Ahmadinejad, he still intends on continuing the Iranian nuclear program and he’s highly indoctrinated in Islamic law and society. He does claim to want to improve conditions for women, and has at least acknowledged the Holocaust, but ultimately he’s sort of a Ahmadinejad lite as it were. It would be better perhaps if he won, but like President Obama says its up to the Iranian people to deal with their own affairs and the President is 100 percent right about this.

It’s a shame the democrats in the House can’t stand behind him for a change, and show at least a hint of having a spine of their own.

  61. Zooey says:

There’s nothing wrong with the text of the resolution:

The House of Representatives expresses its support for all Iranian citizens who embrace the values of freedom, human rights, civil liberties, and the rule of law; condemns the ongoing violence against demonstrators by the government of Iran and pro-government militias, as well as the ongoing government suppression of independent electronic communication through interference with the Internet and cellphones; and affirms the universality of individual rights and the importance of democratic and fair elections.

I see no reason why the Democrats shouldn’t vote “yes” on such a resolution.

On the other hand, Democrats should have been been a bit more politically savvy as to what the Republicans were up to — especially since that dimwit Pence has been yammering all over the teevee machine about it — and run some political interference. Obviously, Reps Ellsworth and Loebsack had some idea what the Rs were up to.

  63. WAYNEBRO says:

Clearly this is just an attempt by the right wing to goad us into war with Iran. Since the direct approach of fearmongering didn’t work, now the idea is to shore up support for a perceived “leftist” faction in Iran. They figure if they can convince the democrats in congress that this is a left leaning faction being oppressed, that it will be easier to garner support for US involvement.

Think about it. Any appearance of US support, even “non binding” resolutions like this are sure to do one thing and one thing only.

Strain relations with Ahmadinejad, who no doubt will remain in power for now. They’re not going to turn over power and Ahmadinejad will remain in power. So if the US is seen as backing Mousavi, then our relations with Ahmadinejad will be severely damaged, even worse than what they are now.

In other words this is an attempt to either start a war by getting us to back a revolution now, or strain relations so poorly as to damage any chance President Obama has of rebuilding relations with Ahmadinejad.

That Nancy Pelosi allowed this to happen, and that the democrats voted for it without any dissent whatsover, is a testament to the worthlessness of the Democrats in the House of Representatives, and the need to vote them out of office as their terms expire.

They must think that because people talk differently, dress differently, have a different culture and religion that they don’t have the capacity to comprehend and remember their own history, our meddling, and the disaster it became. It’s only WASP-ish fat men in suits and ties that are intelligent – these guys and their ignorance are astonishing in their arrogance and mistaken certainty.

    Zooey Says:

Thanks for sharing your opinion. I explained my reservations on the matter in the second paragraph — my opinion.

I saw the reservations Zooey and I’m not picking an argument. I just don’t see how those reservations qualify the preceding statements.

    You made two clear declarations.

    Zooey Says:

There’s nothing wrong with the text of the resolution:

I see no reason why the Democrats shouldn’t vote “yes” on such a resolution.

    Then you made the “other hand” statement;

But that follow up statement doesn’t qualify the first two.

“Political savvy” isn’t the issue here. The resolution is, and it’s wrong on all levels.

It has nothing to do with what the republicans were “up to”.

The vote in and of itself is a slap in the face to the President.

The President just got through saying on national television that we need to avoid the very appearance of “meddling” with the Iranian elections.

So turning around and voting for a resolution that shows support for one side in the elections is by itself a slap in the face in the President and his authority. In fact, it tends to paint him as somewhat of a “lame duck” if he can’t even get a portion of the House democrats to support his positions.

What the republicans were up to is apparent. They’re trying to facilitate the environment for US backed war in Iran. It’s what they’ve always wanted and something they’ve never been secretive about.

But the problem is the vote itself, voting against the President’s position just days after he makes it. And worse, unanimously.

It has nothing to do with the “wording” of the resolution.

It has to do with the resolution itself, which is in direct opposition to the Presidents instructions for us to avoid even the appearance of meddling in this election.

And what’s worse, it makes it that much harder for the President to rebuild relations with President Ahmadinejad once this show of revolt is over.

The fact that Pelosi was stupid enough to even allow a vote on this has me wanting to slap the taste out of her mouth.

What was she thinking? dDo you remember how many Democratic resolutions were allowed to the floor? MINIMAL !

And to hand these guys a strategic victory on a Friday afternoon…

    ugh! Dems…. you are KILLING

Exactly. It’s as if the republicans were still in power.

We have no Democratic House of Representatives.

We have a republican controlled House of Representatives with a Democratic majority.

With the majority being merely an afterthought.

  91. Alejandro says:

Why is Ron Paul, a REPUBLICAN, the only member of the US House of Representatives who stood by the President?

It has nothing to do with Obama and everything to do with staying out of other countries’ business.

For Paul perhaps. But the vote has everything to do with PRESIDENT Obama.

He just got through stating on national television that we should stay out of the elections and avoid even the very appearance of “meddling”.

Then the supposedly democratic controlled House of Representatives turns around and votes in direct defiance of the President?

Ron Paul’s vote is clear, it is due to is non interference libertarian views. But the vote itself? That has everything to do with the President, and the democrats spineless ability to support him over hard line republicans like Mike Pence.

    Completely incredible,

These are the same GOP American flag pin wearing patriotic morons that wanted to Nuke Iran. That Iran is a country within the “Axis of Evil”.

Now they decry that Obama is unAmerican for not urging discourse in Iran by choosing sides? Knowingly that who may run Iran is who America will have to deal with?

Could you imagine these GOP’ers rooting for the ‘60 demonstraters in this country? Not me..!

I draw some lines of connection to change from the people as the ‘60 to the youth of Iran now.

Next week the GOP’ers will be return to nuking Iran, No Doubt..!

It amazes me how all of the Obama bobbleheads just nod and grin at everything he says and does. And then I read here how you throw names and slurs at the other party instead of arguing the facts. And the only way to knock Reagan is to simply ignore the facts of what he accomplished.

Has the Democratic Party gone so far over the cliff that a measure in support of freedom and against oppression is ridiculed as it is here?

And did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, since every one of the Democratic votes were in favor of this resolution, that Obama may be the one who is wrong? Or are you content to just nod and grin like the bobbleheads in the car windows, without any thought whatsoever on the subject?

The platform of John F. Kennedy would be right in line with today’s Republican party. Go back and read his points that would be relevant today, and then see who has moved into “radical” territory.

“The Radical Right” is a misnomer invented purely to counter this major shift to the left from the days when Kennedy was the head of the Democratic Party.

  103. CaSunshine says:

I am deeply despondent over republicans and what their party has sunk down to. All they do is preach hate and fear…anymore. What has happened to the art of interesting, but respectful differences of opinion? Hate radio is ruining our country by encouraging a group of people who hate Jews, blacks, authority, etc,. to proceed in their hate and perhaps use violence and guns. Go to my petition site “Rid the airwaves of hate radio” and please sign to get Limbaugh, Savage, Levin, O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck , and the rest of these jerks off the air. Tks.

    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

So you call us bobble heads then without even an irony buffering sentence between talk about how WE call names and dont argue facts. World class stupid moron. Yeah Raygun accomplished a lot. Economic stagnation and the slaughter of a couple hundred thousand in Central America with his policies. He DID a couple good things for brainwashed morons like YOU. He showed the GOP that there is no downside to lying to their base because people as stupid as you will buy ANYTHING they say no matter how often they are caught lying. What a putz you are.

Has the Democratic Party gone so far over the cliff that a measure in support of freedom and against oppression is ridiculed as it is here?
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

I didnt see it ridiculed. The point is it was a broad statement of support and the GOPPERS want to characterize it as an attack on Obamas foriegn policy. My GOD you are stupid.

And did it ever occur to you that maybe, just maybe, since every one of the Democratic votes were in favor of this resolution, that Obama may be the one who is wrong? Or are you content to just nod and grin like the bobbleheads in the car windows, without any thought whatsoever on the subject?
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

Again my GOD you are stupid. Did it occur to YOU that there is no contradiction between a non binding broad statement of support from Congress and the administration saying they will stay out of it? I didnt hear Obama say this was a bad thing.

The platform of John F. Kennedy would be right in line with today’s Republican party. Go back and read his points that would be relevant today, and then see who has moved into “radical” territory.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

No. It wouldnt. Kennedy NEGOTIATED with the USSR. He REFUSED to invade Cuba. He shut DOWN operation Mongoose. You are a brainwashed fool with no idea what you are talking about.

“The Radical Right” is a misnomer invented purely to counter this major shift to the left from the days when Kennedy was the head of the Democratic Party.
    <<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<

my GOD you are stupid. You think things become true just because you say them. The Dems arent the ones that moved. The GOP moved so far to the right they fell of the spectrum.

    Wow, stunning argument there.

Also, color me disgusted @ this bit of news. We’re getting the regime change we craved with ZERO cost to us. Why are they pushing Obama on this issue when it’s well in hand? I hope he stays the course and ignores the haters. Haven’t we seen enough foreign policy blunders over the past couple of years to know better? Shooting foreigners becuase they don’t agree with your world-view sounds alot like what Usama Bin Laden is exporting. Let’s let the CITIZENS of Iran figure this out for themselves.

  108. snowball5212 says:

Saddam’s interest in, and support for, non-Iraqi non-state actors was spread across a wide variety of revolutionary, liberation, nationalist, and Islamic terrorist organizations. For years, Saddam maintained training camps for foreign “fighters” drawn from these diverse groups. In some cases, particularly for Palestinians, Saddam was also a strong financial supporter. Saddam supported groups that either associated directly with al Qaeda (such as the Egyptian Islamic Jihad, led at one time by bin Laden’s deputy, Ayman al-Zawahiri) or that generally shared al Qaeda’s stated goals and objectives.

Some aspects of the indirect cooperation between Saddam’s regional terror enterprise and al Qaeda’s more global one are somewhat analogous to the Cali and Medellin drug cartels. Both drug cartels (actually loose collections of families and criminal gangs) were serious national security concerns to the United States. Both cartels competed for a share of the illegal drug market. However, neither cartel was reluctant to cooperate with the other when it came to the pursuit of a common objective-expanding and facilitating their illicit trade. The wellpublicized and violent rise of the Medellin cartel temporarily obscured and overshadowed the rise of, and threat posed by, the Cali cartel. Recognizing Iraq as a second, or parallel, “terror cartel” that was simultaneously threatened by and somewhat aligned with its rival helps to explain the evidence emerging from the detritus of Saddam’s regime. Based on captured recordings and documents, this paper illustrates in part how Saddam Hussein ran his “cartel.”

In the years between the two Gulf Wars, UN sanctions reduced Saddam’s ability to shape regional and world events, steadily draining his military, economic, and military powers. The rise of Islamist fundamentalism in the region gave Saddam the opportunity to make terrorism, one of the few tools remaining in Saddam’s “coercion” toolbox, not only cost effective but a formal instrument of state power. Saddam nurtured this capability with an infrastructure supporting (1)his own particular brand of state terrorism against internal and external threats, (2)the state sponsorship of suicide operations, and (3) organizational relationships and “outreach programs” for terrorist groups. Evidence that was uncovered and analyzed attests to the existence of a terrorist capability and a willingness to use it until the day Saddam was forced to flee Baghdad by Coalition forces.

  109. RepubliCult says:

Invoking Ronald Reagan’s AKA,”The Great Capitular’s” policies on Iran is the most ridiculous thing I’ve heard yet from the GOP on this crisis! Recalling Reagan’s words and deeds here, and you see how the remnants of the GOP continue to plumb new depths of outrageousness while in their singular purpose of trying to undermine Obama:

1980 – At October presidential debate, Reagan declares, “NO negotiations with terrorists, of any kind!”

1980 – November, Reagan is elected based upon his strong, get-tough policy on dealing with Iran and “no negotiations promise.

1984 – Reagan CAPITULATES to terrorist’s demands in secret NEGOTIATIONS for the release of hostages as he begins to supply American military WEAPONS to the only terrorist nation that chants, “DEATH to America”.

(Of course I’ve not even mentioned Reagan/Casey’s treason in conspiring with Iran to keep the hostages held by Iran until after the election…)

Indeed the current repressive regime in Iran owes a major debt of gratitude for its survival to Reagan.

The repubs are all for people in other countries protesting the goverment. Just not our citizens. Where were they when people wanted to protest the repub convention? We are labeled ‘homegrown terrorist’ if we want to protest.
As for goverment violence? I think the US hlds the record for beating up and jailing peaceful protesters.
They don’t have the time to vote on US problems. They are not paid to waste time voting on Iran’s.

  112. merrilln says:

Is there anybody here who is not concerned with bashing the Obama but is concerned with standing up and supporting the people of Iran or Neda who died in the streets? Are you all really for sitting down with Ahmadinajhad? Really? A man who doesn’t believe the Holcaust happened or who wants to wipe Israel off the face of the earth? Is this whole line of comments nothing but leftist liberals who are doing the exact same things to the Repbulicans that you claim they do to Obama?
    Geesh!!!

  113. merrilln says:

By the way for Iran being a Theocracy, did anybody hear the reports that in the major cities they had 100% voter turn out?
This embarrasses me that people like that have a turn out like that when we are supposed to be the leaders of the free world and we can’t even get a 50% turn out.
