South Carolina State Sen. David Thomas (R) is a prolific Twitter user. In recent days, he’s been giving his thoughts on the situation in Iran, sarcastically writing, “Just watched on Fox: Iran Clerics decare Iran election was legit. Glad that’s finally cleared up.” Two of his tweets also applauded the protests, comparing them to the right-wing tea parties in the United States:

If Thomas isn’t careful, he may end up becoming a meme. (HT: Wonkette)
It’s interesting how Twitter can compress so much ignorance in so few characters. Or maybe it’s a particular skill of certain politicians.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:03 pmAnd actually, Al Jazeera English is a really good news channel that’s a refreshing departure from the American media’s almost condescending coverage of Iran’s demonstrations. They did a damn better job of covering the Israeli bombing of Palestine.

June 19th, 2009 at 6:09 pmI suppose if you completely ignore that the number of people involved in these Iranian demostrations is much much higher than those involved in the tea party demonstrations (especially as compared to the actual populations of the respective countries), then… well, no the events are still nothing alike.
The tea parties were a knee-jerk reaction to the backwoods ninnies not getting their way in the November election. Something like this would have been sponsored by Fixed News regardless of the actual legislation was that was being cooked up by the Obama administration. I think comparing the two suggests that the Senator had no idea WTF is going on in the two countries. At all. Thanks for the gem, South Carolinians!
June 19th, 2009 at 6:09 pmIt’s just GOP officials, who are so used to spinning, they can’t stop. They’ll try to equate real, grassroots protests with ones that they and corporate interests sponsor. Just goes to show you how ignorant they think real, grassroots folks are. And how deluded they are.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:10 pmThis is a disgrace. The GOP has truly lost its mind.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:13 pmIn their dreams.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:13 pm*
Wow, this is a scoop. Who knew the Iranian protesters were closeted homosexuals who liked scrotums rubbed in their faces…
June 19th, 2009 at 6:14 pmThere must be a high concentration of mercury in the water in South Carolina.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:14 pmSociopaths are eternally victims – it’s part of their profile.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:15 pm*
Ignorance, thy name is David Thomas.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:16 pmI know Iranians like their tea, but they don’t bag it like Publicans…
June 19th, 2009 at 6:17 pmSo if David Thomas is spending all his time on Twitter, who is minding the store? And to think that this slacker has health insurance paid for by the taxpayer who doesn’t have health insurance.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:19 pmFor a group that doesn’t see a difference between affirmative action and lynchings, I’m not surprised.
Sociopaths, all.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:20 pmIts like 1984, the sheep are for bombing Iran one hour and the next hour they are supporting reform.
Its like Iraq Deja Vu all over again.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:21 pmJust when you think the Republics have reached the height of their stupidity they have to go and fool you.
A couple of hundred whacked out righties not really sure what they are protesting is the same as a half a million Iranians protesting a rigged election. Yeah, right.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:22 pm.
Only (R)ushpublickin’s really know the power of the Oxy Teabag.
.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:24 pmThe teabaggers couldn’t even get respectable crowds after daily advertisements on Fixed News. They were pitiful and pathetic.
On the other hand what is happening in Iran is truly inspiring. If I was the praying sort, I would be praying for them for what tomorrow might bring. Instead I will send them healing thoughts tonight before I go to bed and tomorrow.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:26 pmeven with idiots like this, it is heartening to have Americans actually see that the Iranian people are not monolithic.
The last eight years led many to believe that they were all terrorists.
Check out this clip of Dr. Brzezinski debunking the false representation placed on the Iranians.

June 19th, 2009 at 6:31 pmwhy do people care if America is on the march to socialism? Thats what we need anyways. Thats why i voted for Obama. Democracy has failed. Socialism will work. The Constitution is not a living document, and Obama knows that. I’m so glad he’s president!

June 19th, 2009 at 6:36 pmA message to all Republicans in office out there on Iran:
Just stop.
The Iranian citizens are succeeding where you have failed.
The GOP is the New York Knicks of politics right now.
The more the GOP mobilizes on this subject, the more they look like one of the “veterans” with a neatly cut cardboard sign asking for change that goes for booze or drugs.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:37 pmThe GOP needs to stop supporting low taxes and small government. We need more taxes and Bigger government! We need to spend more money aborting children because of overpopulation, we need to make sure that our children grow up wanting to serve the government instead of false christian gods. Government is the answer. People are too stupid to make it on their own, we need government to regulate how we live. Freedom is a joke.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:41 pmI’m so glad Obama understand all this and is working for people like us!!!!!
June 19th, 2009 at 6:41 pmoh god. i wish standing tall would shorten his stupidity to Twitter parameters.
June 19th, 2009 at 6:43 pmI’m so glad we won people, Obama is president! I agree with him, there is no reason to salute the flag. The flag represents a bunch of old white racist guys who did nothing but evil. Wearing flag pins is a joke as well (Obama only does it for now so he can get buy, just wait until we rally start changing things!). Obama is such an well educated person, i’m so glad he won over stupid wannabe conservative John McCain!

June 19th, 2009 at 6:49 pmDid any of you vote for Obama? If yes, then why are you hating on me? I love Obama, he is our savior from Democracy. I’m just like you guys, we all voted for the same guy. Or did you all vote for McCain? If so, then i have the wrong impresion about this place. I thought this is where people like me (Obama supporters) came to hang out. Did you guys cast a vote for Sarah Palin? Are you kidding me??? If you didn’t vote for Obama, then it’s you who are the dumbasses!!!
June 19th, 2009 at 6:54 pmObama’s a socialist, ya’ll. hyuk hyuk hyuk hyuk
June 19th, 2009 at 6:55 pmI’m glad Obama is president. I don’t know about the rest of you, but i’m glad. I hate Democracy, and i did hate America until we elected Obama. Now America is cool because we will be socialist in just a matter of years, which is what we should have been in the first place. Hopefully by the time I’m old we’ll have a world government like Obama was talking about that will rule all of earth. We don’t need to seperated into groups, we are one people who should have one currency and one leader. Obama is the leader of the free WORLD…..accept it!
June 19th, 2009 at 6:57 pmhey realness, are you stupid? Did you think Obama wasn’t a socialist? Why else whould i have voted for him. If he was a Democracy loving Capitalist pig i wouldn’t have voted for him. Did you vote for him? If so, then why do you hate him now for what he is doing to America? I think he’s doing a great job! We needed the government to take over GM, we need the government to run most businesses because people can’t be trusted to regulate themselves. Individual liberty is a joke, and most americans know that now. Why else do you think Obama won?

Mr. Thomas: YOU ARE AN IDIOT.
June 19th, 2009 at 7:01 pmI think what David Thomas is trying to say is that in Iran, al Jazeera is what Fox News is here. Didn’t Fox News report endlessly on the Tea Parties?
You know, he might be right.

… Well, lame, at best.
Who’s savior?
“We” all did not vote for the same guy.
Some of us knew that “other” candidates were on ballots, and with a clear conscious, voted for “real” change. Not just nameplates and underwear, oh, and the dog.
I’m hatin’ on you because you’re a lame ass poser…

June 19th, 2009 at 7:04 pmwell, aparently realness is a right wing extremist. Leave this place you redneck hillbilly christian, let us real liberals converse with none of your right wing distractions.

June 19th, 2009 at 7:11 pmMax Anax, i’ve never voted for a stupid conservative. I have a clean liberal voting record. The only good thing W. Bush did was tripple the size of the federal government, thats it. Otherwise, he did nothing good. Obama is in control of that government now, and he’s going to do a great job making it even bigger for us. Sorry to say it you guys, but small government doesn’t work. We can’t trust people to regulate themselves. The government needs to oversee most of what we do, to keep us in line. Distribute the wealth accordingly. Tell us which Doctor to go to and when. Tell us what jobs we should try and attain. It all does make sense, I’m sorry you guys don’t get that. But you voted for Obama? I just don’t get it. How could you not know all this already if you voted for Obama?
June 19th, 2009 at 7:12 pmHow ignorant of you right wing extremists! Leave this place!
June 19th, 2009 at 7:12 pm.
Dear standingtall777,
So, you support hiding the facts on WAR CRIMES?
So, you support Obama’s stance on DOMA?
So, you support warrantless wiretaps of Americans?
Just checking for parsing…
… of Principles.
.
June 19th, 2009 at 7:12 pmstandingtall777, Supporting the President does not necessarily mean that you or we MUST support everything he does. Even when us Progressives find something we disagree with him on we will question the President on it. You however show blind allegiance to the President and that is dangerous thinking.
June 19th, 2009 at 7:13 pmWell, i’m going to barackobama.com (i suggest you guys go to, maybe you’ll learn something!) to work on mybo page. This place isn’t what i was told it was. Dear standingtall777,
So, when Obama, as a Senator, voted to immunize those corporations(read financial campaign donors) who violated the basic Rights of Americans to be Free from Tyranny, you thought you were voting for a Liberal?
Ha, ha, ha…
… The joke is not just ON you, but YOU are the joke.
.
June 19th, 2009 at 7:15 pmThe patriot act, big brother legislation was signed into law by a republican.

June 19th, 2009 at 7:15 pmThey’re totally buying it, ya’ll!!! They don’t even SEE that I’m just acting like them to hold up the mirror! You know, to expose those libruls for those socialist new world order ideas that their leader Obama is making us go to! I’m deep undercover ya’ll!!! Gotta play it cool…
June 19th, 2009 at 7:15 pmIf Obama does it, it is ok. Who cares if he is doing the wiretapping thing still?? Who cares if he doesn’t immediately pull us out of Iraq? Who care??? It’s Obama doing it, so it’s ok!!!
June 19th, 2009 at 7:16 pmHey Standingtall777, When Obama, as a Senator voted in favor of allowing TELCOMS to peer into our computers, did you support that too?

Hey everbody,
standingSMALL777 thinks that the only choices during an election is between a Republican and a Democrat. If you didn’t vote for one, then by deduction, you must have voted for the “other” party.
Does anyone care to illuminate to the cretin, that a dualopoly depends upon that kind of rationale. Far be it from me to point to the fact, that in some States of the Union, there were “other” candidates on ballots.

June 19th, 2009 at 7:24 pmOn June 29, 2008, Seymour Hersh reported in the New Yorker: “Late last year, Congress agreed to a request from President Bush to fund a major escalation of covert operations against Iran, according to current and former military, intelligence, and congressional sources. These operations, for which the President sought up to four hundred million dollars, were described in a Presidential Finding signed by Bush, and are designed to destabilize the country’s religious leadership.”

June 19th, 2009 at 7:27 pmWhat in the hell are these idiots up to? The Republicans are comparing their plight to the protestors in Iran. Poor downdrodden Conservitives who have been so abused and misunderstood. Obama stoled the election and now they’re fighting mad. The teabaggers will be out in full force, riots in the streets. They must demonstrate there love for democracy, money, freedom, money, guns, money, religion, and the American way (according to them).
June 19th, 2009 at 7:29 pmThis must be highly insulting to the protestors in Iran.

Only if you want to show how far apart they are. Good Lord, Repubs, get a grip. You are absolutely nothing like these people fighting for their freedoms. Repubs are sickening – they demean everyone who is truly suppressed with their ridiculous ‘comparisons’. People who are really fighting for truth & freedom must absolutely hate Repubs with their whining, dishonest ‘comparisons’. Disgusting.
Moussavi (sp?) isn’t the opposite of Ahmanidejad (sp?). He is very pro-Islam, nationalistic, and pro-nuclear power. The polarization of this issue by Republicans is silly. They are like high school girls picking sides in an argument, without knowing much about what the argument is.

Good Lord, Repubs, get a grip. You are absolutely nothing like these people fighting for their freedoms. Repubs are sickening – they demean everyone who is truly suppressed with their ridiculous ‘comparisons’.

June 20th, 2009 at 3:39 pmIf we are looking for analogies, the Iranian protests actually more closely resemble the protests Americans should have had after 2000 and 2004.
The “Supreme” leadership in Iran represents the tyranny the Republicans brought on our nation for 8 years after stealing the elections.

June 22nd, 2009 at 11:21 amHey, SC does have extreme mercury in the rivers, and a history of inbreeding…..do you think that is enough to account for the ignorance and stupidity of so many of its politicians.
