Steele Calls Obama A ‘Liar,’ Then Apologizes, Then Denies He Apologized

steele-closeupYesterday morning, RNC Chairman Michael Steele hosted Bill Bennett’s radio show, where he fearmongered about a non-existent “health police” and advised that President Obama simply “do the deal” to fix health care. He also called the president a “liar” for pledging to fix health care without deepening the national debt:

OBAMA [audiotape]: I’ve made a firm commitment that health care reform will not add to the federal budget deficit over the next decade.

STEELE: [shouting] LIAR! Sorry, I had to get that off my chest. We need to stand up and say this. Come on!

During the commercial break, Steele seemed to realize calling the president a “liar” was bad form. About five minutes later, he backed off his statements, seemingly apologizing for going “a little strong” against Obama:

STEEEL: I get hotheaded from time to time, so I just want to let folks know that in the last segment, I went a little strong in my response to the president’s comment, and I don’t want to go there. Because that’s not what this is about. … For all those folks out there who want to go start blogging, uh, just calm it down, you know. RNC chairman’s not trying to be crazy first thing in the morning.

Steele avoided name-calling for the next hour. But when a caller scolded him for “apologizing” to the president, Steele insisted he had never apologized, and declared that he was “not backing off”:

CALLER: Well I’ve been listening to you, and earlier you called the president a liar, and I said, Yeah, he’s finally got there! He’s finally decided to tell them how it is! And then you apologized —

STEELE: No I didn’t apologize! … Look, I’ve got to be mindful of my, quote, position and so forth. I always took great offense to the fact that the Democrats disparaged President Bush. They disrespected the man, and they disrespected the office that the man held. And I’ve said from the beginning of my chairmanship that we did not want to do that. … I’m not backing off of the fact that I think there’s a lot of misdirection, and there’s not a whole lot of honesty that’s being laid out there for the American people.

Listen to a compilation:

So is Steele apologizing for calling Obama a liar? Or is he “not backing off” his name-calling — name-calling that, he said, “disrespected” the president and “the office that the man held”?

No, it come naturally all day long…….

    Illeism much Steele?
Referring to oneself in the 3rd party is usually a sign of Borderline Personality Disorder.

  4. Another Joe says:

    But obama is a liar…

He sold us out on healthcare, exploiting the issue in debates with mccain and telling us “yes we can”.

Quietly, right now, the public option is quietly being removed and so has the idea of universal coverage.

Course you would never know if you thought TP was a legitimate source of progressive news. Instead, it has degraded into a circus of distractions – 24/7 idiotry all about what the latests discredited lying liar has to say.

In this case – steele my be a dishonest jerk, but he is right.

OBAMA IS A LIAR! But for some reason, progressive ISSUES are no longer welcome at TP, only the media circus.

Another Liar pipes up first thing in the morning…

  6. Wayne says:

Sounds to me that Steele should actually be advocating better coverage for mental disorders. Or his family should be advocating this ( along with trying to get him committed. )

  7. Purple State says:

The way I’m reading and listening to it…Steele didn’t apologize for calling the President a liar. He just apologized for being so “strong” about it. Hence, the backtracking.

Still, I have the idea that Steele should not consider himself a media personality, but someone who should be known for his policy.

If you’re going to host a show, Mr. Chairman, then you need to have your words held to the fire, and I don’t think you THINK about what you’re saying.

The RNC and conservative movement are being led by radio hosts. Pitiful.

  12. looktothehills says:

Blessed be the name of the Lord for all of his wondrous works, and praise the lord to all. Steele does have a point. How can you decrease our deficit (spending) when the Government is expected to take care of the populist? That is an outright lie told by the Great O’Barry. Of course, he continues to perpetuate the truth because he has many supporters who cannot think independently. If the Great O’Barry said that 9/11 was an inside job, you guys would believe it. Also, my heard earned tax dollars should not fund health care for America. Most of your health issues would be resolved through cardio and a good diet. The problem is most of you are fat (many chins). Obesity leads to health problems. Stop blaming the Government and get on a treadmill.

  13. dbadass says:

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of poverty,
    I will give no assistance: For it is all mine;
Thy safe and thy cash register, they comfort me.
    It preparest a corporate boardroom table before me in the presence of mine henchmen;
Thou annointest my head with dollars; My account runneth over.

Surely greed and avarice shall follow me all the days of my life,
and I will dwell in the Bank of the America forever.

  23. Purple State says:

Here’s the whole idea about “lies” with this issue of health care.

When a proposal is brought before you at work, what is the reaction? If someone says that they are committed to something, but there is doubt in that commitment, I would treat the situation with skepticism, as I am treating the health-care debate, but to come out and yell “LIAR!” at someone…that shows that there is absolutely no trust in someone.

To jump at the bit and blame the President of being a liar…about what? He’s lying that he’s not committed? There’s a difference between attempting something (as Obama is trying to do) and assuring the American people that it will work (as Steele is imagining).

Here’s a thought, Steele; give us your OWN proposal.

You’re telling us that it is the fat and unhealthy Americans that are taxing health care, correct? I would totally agree with you that it is our personal responsibility to keep ourselves in shape and that we should find time for that in our busy daily schedule.

These characteristics seem to sum up the mentality and the functionality of the contemporary Repignofascist Party. Mr. Steele you have arrived. He should also explain how President Obama is a liar. He said he would not increase the national deficit in the next decade with health care reform. Since there is no firm plan in place and no budget estimates on what it will cost and how it will be paid for, I guess I don’t see how President Obama could be a liar on this subject.

    You want progressive issues?

Health insurance reform. Tax reform. Unionization. Equality for Gays. Ending warrantless domestic spying. Public funding of elections. Energy efficiency. The restoration of habeas corpus and a speedy trial. Equal pay for women, The maintenance of legal abortions. The de-politicization of the DOJ. The end of the Iraq occupation. Good faith diplomacy instead of bullying. Responsibility for the environment, Worker safety. Food safety. The separation of Church and State. Sex education. Rational education. Affordable higher education. Child care assistance. A mixed economy. Corporate accountability.

Have all these issues NOT been covered by TP and The Wonk Room before? Are they not covered now?

If you want a blog that exactly reflects your own specific concerns and opinions and choice of news and issues each and every day, exactly when YOU want it, then start your own damn blog.

  63. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    Another Joe Says:
OBAMA IS A LIAR! But for some reason, progressive ISSUES are no longer welcome at TP, only the media circus.

President Obama has said time and time again that he is firmly behind a public option for health care. What is happening right now is in the Senate where the bought and paid for Senators are trying to torpedo a public option.

On the other hand, the House is behind a public option for health care. I am quite sure that Obama is working behind the scenes to pressure the Democratic Senators to support a public plan. So, I guess I don’t see where President Obama is a liar since legislation is created in Congress, it is not created by the President.

  64. Keith says:

Isn’t it true that this $1 Trillion price tag on healthcare over the next ten years DOES NOT include public administration like Medicare, but increasing coverage through private means?

Obama may need firmer hand on health care debate

By CHARLES BABINGTON – 1 hour ago

WASHINGTON (AP) — President Barack Obama is seeing the downside of his light touch on revamping the nation’s health care system.

Congressional Democrats are off to a halting start, blindsided by a high cost estimate and divided over how to proceed. The confusion has emboldened Republican critics of the administration’s approach to its top domestic priority.

While too early to rule out eventual success, it seems Obama will have to be more forceful and hands-on.

Steele, you are jealous Obama is President and you’re not! Get over it!

  67. Wayne A. Schneider says:

These Senators (from either party) who oppose reforming our health care system need to be called out publicly as the bought-and-paid-for stooges of the health care industry that they are. I am still hearing some of them say we have the “best” health care system in the world. The only possible way that might be true is if you measure “best” by how profitable it is (on the demented theory that the “best” is the most profitable.) Call them out. Point out who opposes doing anything and then note how much money they get from the health care industry. We all know that huge contributors to politicians get their opinions listened to more than you or I would. Sure, they say they don’t do that, and there’s the old joke that “If you can’t take their money and vote against them anyway, you’re in the wrong business.” Well, if Senators oppose reforming health care in this country at the request of the health care industry, they don’t belong in the US Senate.

    To the US Senate,

A reminder. You are there to serve us, not your corporate sponsors. If you believe that you can’t get re-elected without their money, then you were never there to work on our behalf in the first place. Prove me wrong. Support the president’s efforts to give the American people what they need.

  68. Wayne A. Schneider says:

Do the people who say that the president’s health care plans would “cost too much” believe that costs will never come down? Do they think that Billy Tauzin’s gift the BigPharma, where he made it a law that the federal government could not negotiate for lower drug prices, is somehow permanent? Repealing that alone would drive down costs. Then there’s the power of guilt. Point out that the huge profits being taken are at the expense of the sick and dying. What kind of inhuman bastard thinks it’s okay to profit off the problems of the sick and dying?

(Bangs head aganst wall)—-Oh, now I remember! He hid the healthcare $ in the supplemental budgets for Iraq and Afghanistan.

If Bush had spent 1/100 of his time in office working on behalf of the people instead of lying to our citizens and pursuing a personal agenda focused on world domination, Obama wouldn’t have to fix this and the rest of the problems Bush refused to address. He found @900 days to bicycle, cut brush, hang out at Camp David, look for a new house in Dallas, etc.

His new project is called—An attempt at burnishing a rust-crusted legacy, or how I plan to get money to complete my presidental library and testify in a Texas court about what I knew about lying to get the land to build it.

By giving the Congress the opportunity to develop the bill he has exposed where all his opposition is early in the process. Now it is up to us to get to work. He isn’t god he can’t just wave his hand and it is done. I don’t know what some of you people want he has only been in office 150 days, relax and do your part and we will win.

Fred, there is not a dialog now… That is the epitome of stupid comments.

Any number of other candidates in the primary talked about more robust healthcare options. The fact is – obama is now morphing into john mclame’s plan.

Funny how self-proclaimed progressives will “catapult the propaganda” instead of participating in an honest dialog about the real issues that matter to millions of Americans.

Yeah – whether steele tells literal truths all the time…

Oh, and don’t dare talk about a need to organize and have action – that is not what “superblogs” are for.

But I am sure you will tell me all about that, fred.

Steele does have a point. How can you decrease our deficit (spending) when the Government is expected to take care of the populist?

By making all corporations pay their fair share of taxes. By making the rich who hide their money in off-shore tax havens pay their fair share of income tax. By lifting the cap on who pays social security taxes. There are plenty of ways to pay for health care for all Americans.

  82. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

    looktothehills Says:
Steele does have a point. How can you decrease our deficit (spending) when the Government is expected to take care of the populist?

Besides, President Obama didn’t say he would decrease the deficit, he only said he wouldn’t increase the deficit. There’s a big difference, one that your pea brain probably can’t comprehend.

  83. Another Joe says:

You don’t know what the President is doing either. He is far more calculating than you give him credit.

The fact that NONE of us know what he is doing is the point. Yeah, that “calculating” stuff is getting old…

He “calculated” when he capitulated to dur chimpfurher on FISA.

He “calculated” when he bailed out wall street instead of main street.

He “calculated” when BILLIONS of that economic aide money disappeared down the “memory hole”

He “calculated” when he bailed out GM

He “calculated” when he continued the previous administration’s wars and supports spending billions and billions more

He “calculated” when he took single payer off the table, and is following that by removing public options and now even universal coverage.

And we are not suppose to discuss this becausue, in your opinion, he is still calculating.

    Another Joe,,,

    After b i t c h i n g about TP’s topic choices from the start, you finally made a substantive criticism on the previous thread at #33 but my response was rejected because of the word b i t c h i n g.

I’d already written an earlier response to an earlier comment of yours, also rejected, and here’s a part of it:

    You want progressive issues?

Health insurance reform. Tax reform. Unionization. Equality for Gays. Ending warrantless domestic spying. Public funding of elections. Energy efficiency. The restoration of habeas corpus and a speedy trial. Equal pay for women, The maintenance of legal abortions. The de-politicization of the DOJ. The end of the Iraq occupation. Good faith diplomacy instead of bullying. Responsibility for the environment, Worker safety. Food safety. The separation of Church and State. Sex education. Rational education. Affordable higher education. Child care assistance. A mixed economy. Corporate accountability.

Have all these issues NOT been covered by TP and The Wonk Room before? Are they not covered as news prompts their discussion?

  85. Fred says:

Otherwise stop acting like you are the only “real” progressive and that your opinions and judgments are the only valid ones.

So sorry that every single damn one of your particular needs aren’t being met, but there are a lot of other people here who have a lot of reasons to be very impressed with themselves who still manage to stamp their feet, hold their breath or thrash about screaming every time they find fault with TP.

If you’ve been fooled, it’s your own damn fault, because you are apparently too lazy to appreciate that it’s not all about YOU.

If TP is so awful, why don’t you go somewhere else–like The Daily Kos or MyDD? I’m sure they’ll be impressed with what you have to offer.

  91. Another Joe says:

Oh yeah, forgot the obama “calculations”:

*back bush administration’s secret government, directly contradicting pledge for “open government”

*continuing darth cheney’s policy of keeping White House logs secret and not subject to FOIA – a move that was unheard of until dur chimpfurher’s reign.

*backing of holding those responsible accountable for their crimes, in fact, he is now protecting them (and he was a constitutional lawyer? WTF?!?!?!?!?!)

*continuing to stonewall public on warrantless spying, picking up the same arguments from previous administration (and he was a constitutional lawyer? WTF?!?!?!?!?!)

Call these “calculations” if you want… Strange use of word though.

  92. Wayne A. Schneider says:

I’m not backing off of the fact that I think there’s a lot of misdirection, and there’s not a whole lot of honesty that’s being laid out there for the American people.

Yes, Mr. Steele, there is a lot of misdirection. And a great deal of it is coming from the Republicans. On the one hand they tell us that the system isn’t broken, so don’t fix it. That’s “misdirection” right there. Then they claim that the cost is going to be too high. It wouldn’t be if they would recognize that the health care is not like the luxury yacht industry, where you can charge what you want because no one’s life depends on having a yacht. So that’s some misdirection right there, too. And remember, too, that the problem isn’t that health care costs too much, it’s that they charge too much.

If Republicans would stop seeing health care as a for-profit industry, then the solutions will be a lot more obvious. I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again. I do not want to be treated by a doctor who went into medicine for the money.

He “calculated” when he took single payer off the table, and is following that by removing public options and now even universal coverage.

    Spot on.

The Obama “chessmaster” excuse is wearing thin. It points to defenders who have absolutely no explanation as to why Obama is supporting bush’s policies, defending corporate interests and playing his progressive base for fools for believing in his “hope” ad copy.

I am furious that Obama has been given a pass after telecom immunity, Bagram, lack of prosecution of the most horrific president in US history, and now healthcare.

I wanted Kucinich, and Bill Maher is absolutely correct that the dems are the new republican, corporate-defender party. The republicans are bug-eyed religious lunatics and the real progressives and liberals are constantly portrayed as fringe UFO-contacting crackpots,(hmmm, now why would the conservative media want to discredit progressives…hmmm…) despite the fact that a majority of America is in favor of progressive issues and causes.

Obama is not a progressive. Obama is not a liberal. Obama is a corporate-owned entity that just covered up bush’s crimes at least three times and looks to obstruct any substantive investigations into any other aspects of Constitutional violations, aided and abetted by the ’savior dems.’ The same b@stards that took impeachment off the table and gave Cmder. Shortbus everything he wanted.

    Everything, meaning our future.

There needs to be a backlash against resistance to prosecutions, resistance to single-payer, and resistance to restoring the rule of law. The longer people wait and peddle this “chessmaster” bongwater, or the “it’s only been a few months” ass-hattery, the less likely that any amount of outcry will produce a result.

Look at how fast the dems panicked when a gay fundraiser started coming unraveled (and how damned fast they offered incentives to the gay community…). That’s an example of the pressure that’s needs to be applied. This “new” administration carries the same stench as the old one, and it’s getting worse.

Read Greenwald and CREW. We are being eviscerated quietly in the glare of a shiny, supposed “victory.”

Bush should’ve gone after Al-Qaeda in the first place and that is what the President is doing. It is what he campaigned on or did you only choose to listen to things that made you happy? He promised the American people and our allies that he would go after Al-Qaeda and that’s what he’s doing.

Obama only has the power to repeal DADT which would then make it illegal for gays to serve, stop reservist discharges in times of national emergency or fight a discharge on an individual basis. Okay, dude. However, I notice dude that real factual information that doesn’t conform to your illusions, dude get characterized as ‘hysterics’ or right-wing. Meanwhile, “preventative detention,” lies about DOMA and telecom immunity are flatly ignored, despite being presented with sourced and credible information. These are little details, these are bush-era policies and continuation of bush era policies.

Not one ‘defender’ has explained why preventative detention is anything but insane. Obama blocking the bush emails, visitor logs, call it “hysterics” or troll-talk or whatever else allows you to dismiss or attempt to discredit, but the Obama middle-finger policies are stacking up.

To the Obamaphiles, however, he’s really a wily chessmaster…Is there no end to the delusion?

Most of us recognized during the campaign that Obama was hardly the wild-eyed “socialist” that the right-wing tried to portray him as. We knew he is a pragmatist, and a centrist, with some progressive instincts.

He has no progressive instincts. Progressives would not allow telecom immunity. Would not allow preventative detention. Would push for single payer. Would push for real transparency.

Obama has done none of these things.

It appears as though you and Another Joe bought the right-wing spin of “most liberal Senator” and expected him to follow suit.

Yes, it’s “right-wing spin” to complain about preventative detention, lying about repeal of DOMA and DADT, and voting for telecomm immunity, not to mention the lack of bush admonistration prosecutions. You really are a disingenuous sh¡thead coward, aren’t you?

Yeah, I’m disappointed in much of his administration’s work so far, but I know the problems the nation faces are deep-seated and almost intractable. I know shit doesn’t necessarily turn around in a few months.

I’m sure the Bagram detainees and the sham military tribunal victims will be sympathetic to your ‘disappointment.’ Awwww. Meanwhile, the bush administration, daily, makes the tracks harder and harder to uncover over their war crimes. Thanks Obama.

    What a disgrace.

Shouldn’t the real question be: What homosexual acts are Obama and the dems going to publicly perform in order to demonstrate that they also support gays?

So ummm, sarcastic or sincere? Incoherent certainly.

There’s quite a few other comments dotted around but what I’ve been able to discern is this:

AJ seems to think that his comments about a corrupt media are revelations to us all.He seems to think that his criticisms of the Dems and lately Obama are revelations too. And he thinks that this site and others are populated by uninformed naifs.

Whole-heartedly agree, but around here, they just post about the lying liars that stand in front of the cameras.
The dems that enable it all get a free pass.
In fact, you can get flamed or even banned at most of these sites for pointing out the fact that none of these morons would be in the media if the dems had taken meaningful action against the criminality, looting, treason, war crimes, crimes against humanity.

So basically Aj is sort of a proto-nihist desperate for inclusion by some group and political identity, but only on his own unique and utterly brilliantly incisive terms.

Oh and 9-11 was an inside job, says AJ.

So maybe that explains AJ a bit better to us all, and maybe will help to explaing TP and the rest of us to AJ a bit better too,

I have a bit of a stomach bug right now. And speaking of Reagan, I remember when he lied to the American people about the Iran-Contra affair. Reagan tried to claim he knew nothing of the arms-for-hostages deal. But when he was forced to testify under oath and was asked if he was familiar with it, he said, “It was an operation taken at my behest…”.

Republicans like to promote two falsehoods (or, if you want to be technical, “misrepresentations.”) First, they like to claim Reagan cut taxes which he did do in his first budget, but then he raised taxes every year after that. Second, they like to claim that Reagan “proved that deficits don’t matter.” (Dick Cheney is alleged to have uttered this.) This is bullpucky, of course, as they do “matter.” It was just their excuse for spending outrageous amounts of money on wars that should never have been fought in the first place.

BTW, did you know that Ronald Reagan is dead? The way they talk about him all the time I thought he might still be calling the shots, but I checked and nope, he’s dead. Dead as a doornail.

But people who come here who have nothing but complaints about President Obama and what he has done thus far seem to me to be nothing more than “concern trolls”. We are never going to get everything that we want out of a President. But some people are willing to give President Obama a chance to do the things he said he was going to do. Considering the mess he inherited, I think he’s doing OK thus far. I can’t imagine how hard it is for him to try to untangle the messes that George Bush left us. I will wait at least a year before I condemn him.

Until I hear otherwise from people actually in the Obama DOJ, I will continue to believe that the reason Obama went into court and put forth the Bush Administration’s arguments in defense of the indefensible is that they are trying to lose. I believe they want the courts to say that the Bush policies are unconstitutional and, therefore, there would be less argument about repealing those laws. Republicans would no longer be able to defend the unconstitutional if they want to remain true to their oaths of office to support and defend it. Until the issues involved are settled one way or the other in the courts, they will continue to serve as wedge issues. And the only politicians who would think we need to have those wedge issues are the ones who have nothing of their own to campaign on. That’s just IMHO, of course.

179.ralph the wonder locust Says: You notice wrongly. I didn’t characterize your factual information as hysterics. I characterized your response as hysterics. See the difference?

Neither confronts the perpetuation of Obama’s adoration for bush abuses, so in that respect, there is no difference. You’ve avoided it again.

I didn’t avoid anything, except for the agenda you’re insisting on. I was addressing your claim that “real factual information that doesn’t conform to your illusions, dude get characterized as ‘hysterics’ or right-wing”

Your response to this (above) is almost completely incoherent.

    Let’s go through it step-by-step:

    1) you accused me of: real factual information that doesn’t conform to your illusions, dude get characterized as ‘hysterics’ or right-wing

    2) I pointed out that I wasn’t addressing your “factual information” — I was addressing your use of that information in this thread. I never accused you of being right wing. I simply characterized your repeated comments as “hysterics”. I stand by that characterization.

    3) You then say I’ve avoided something because you wanted me to say something else. You seem to try to conflate your erroneous claim about me with your fervent belief in the massive failure of the five-month-old Obama administration.

And your inability to deal with the casual employment of the term “dude” really doesn’t say much for your maturity of thought. It really makes you sound kinda childish.

Yes, like the causal employment of the term “dude” makes you sound mature to begin with…

Sure, it’s not real dignified, but I find it conversational at times. It wasn’t intended to demean you, simply to reflect a growing exasperation with your one-note argument.

You chose to mock my use of it by repeated insertions in your response, to the detriment of any sense you were trying to make. In fact, your mocking use of “dude” overshadowed the rest of your message. You chose to make fun of a casual inconsequential language element at the expense of what you really seem to want to say (over and over again).

In fact, it sounds very much like…heehaw…heehaw..

And away he goes, still ducking Obama’s continued abusive policies or the preventative detention or the telecom immunity covering bush’s crimes.

Again with the question: what kind of response are you seeking here?

You seem upset with others dismissing your arguments, yet you refuse to give anyone else’s any respectful treatment at all. You want to dictate the subject of discussion, and any deviation from that (including my original observation that you were being a little hysterical) you see as “ducking”.

It doesn’t work that way. I understand your militant rejection of Obama. I just don’t share it. Yes, he is moving too slowly on some issues and supporting others too tepidly. On others he is just flat-out wrong. But he’s the best we had to choose from and I trust he will be a good president in an extremely difficult time.

You’re welcome to keep trumpeting your rants. Just don’t expect them to generate a more positive response than you’ve gotten here today, with the delivery method you’ve chosen.

And what abuses would those be that he “embraced”. Because he hasn’t taken action or didn’t challenge what Bush set up does not mean that Obama “embraces” those policies.

Nevermind the preventative detention which, if floated by a republican, would have been instant declared insane, but here is met with…indifference, or worse, apology because it’s Obama.

And what “preventative detention” would that be? Are you talking about Gitmo? If so, what would you have Obama do? Should he open the gates and let everyone leave?

    Nevermind the Bagram detentions continue.

Again, do you advocate he just let all those guys go?

Nevermind bush prosecutions are being blown off and covered up.

Perhaps you can give us examples of how they are being “covered up”. If you mean that each and every memo ever written and every photograph taken hasn’t been released to the public, then I guess you don’t think we should have anything held in secret to protect our national security.

But, I’ve confidence you’ll trot out a host of unclever verbal detours to characterize these as right-wing attacks and critics as trolls.

Mostly they are right wing attacks by trolls. I haven’t made up my mind about you yet whether you are an incredibly impatient person or whether you are a “concern” troll.

Any time someone comes along that can’t find anything good that our President has done, I can only think that they are a concern troll. Because people like you do nothing but complain and when asked can’t come up with anything different that President Obama could be doing to meet your needs.

I believe, like you, (although it took me a little more time to come to that same conclusion) that the lawyerly Obama knows how to win a case legally; some of the things we’ve heard that have upset so many, may indeed be the torturous way in which justice is finally gained.

Bilbo, I always read your comments too and find that my opinions are much the same.
I am very sensitive to the impatience and frustration of the LGBT community, but I truly believe that until Congress changes the law, there cannot be a real solution. And right now, Obama needs Congress to focus on the economy and health care, and the wars. The repukes are obstructing everything in every way – he can’t force this issue right now — but he has taken steps and I am confident he will do more.
I understand the LGBT community is very angry – rightly so – and we’re asking for extraordinary patience of them – but they must recognize that their day is coming.
I am also frustrated that the changes I want to see are so slow in coming to pass, but I recognize the enormous challenges Obama faces and perhaps “triage” is a suitable word here — he can’t fix everything at once — and to fix it right, permanently and unequivocally, will take even longer.

I’ve said I don’t approve of the language however try reading the brief. Don’t bother arguing DADT with me either. I’m a veteran who worked with JAGs when I was being discharged, I’m well aware of how it works.

You really want an adult to talk to? Well stop whining about every little thing Obama hasn’t done and join us in reality. Then maybe we’ll have a conversation. You sound like a braty 12 year old who hasn’t gotten their way.

Wow, JAGs…how intended to be intimidating; except for a couple points that want clarification from so informed a poster, such as these:

The Choice to Defend DOMA, and Its Consequences
    by Richard Socarides

Like many other gay people who support the president, and as someone who had hoped he would be a presidential-sized champion of gay civil rights from the start, I was disturbed by his administration’s brief defending the so-called Defense of Marriage Act (DOMA), filed late last week, in opposition to our full equality.

It had such a buckshot approach to it, a veritable kitchen sink of anti-gay legal theories, that it seemed expressly designed to inflict maximal damage to our rights. Instead of making nuanced arguments which took into account the president’s oft-stated support for repealing DOMA – a law he has called “abhorrent” – the brief seemed to embrace DOMA and all its horrific consequences.

I was equally troubled by the administration’s explanation that they had no choice but to defend the law. As an attorney and as someone who was directly involved in giving advice on such matters to another president (as a Special Assistant for civil rights to President Bill Clinton), I know that this is untrue.

Hmmm…how contrary to your claim. It goes on:

The administration’s lawyers could have simply argued, for example, that the plaintiff’s had no standing. There was no need to invoke legal theories that were not only offensive on their face, but which could put at risk future legal efforts on behalf of our civil rights.

I am not suggesting that it is easy to get the DOJ to agree not to defend a law on the merits, because it is not. Someone has to be aggressive and make persuasive arguments to the president. Someone on a staff level has to believe strongly that it is the right thing to, not defending DOMA, and be willing to push hard. But it is doable. It does happen.

    There’s more :

And before Obama claims he didn’t have a choice, he had a choice. Bush, Reagan and Clinton all filed briefs in court opposing current federal law as being unconstitutional (we’ll be posting more about that later). Obama could have done the same. But instead he chose to defend DOMA, denigrate our civil rights, go back on his promises, and contradict his own statements that DOMA was “abhorrent.” Folks, Obama’s lawyers are even trying to diminish the impact of Roemer and Lawrence, our only two big Supreme Court victories. Obama is quite literally destroying our civil rights gains with this brief. He’s taking us down for his own benefit.

Yeah, I’m all ears here. And before you preach to anyone about behaving like an adult? You might want to refrain from calling them names, like “moron.”

    Moron.

They had been working on the Blagojevich case for many, many years and only weakened their case when they went public too soon. If we’re going to act like children and force Holder to disclose too much too soon he’ll be putting cases at risk. And if Obama loses in 4 years to a Republican we’ll never get satisfaction.

The JAG remark was not meant to intimidate. It was mearly to demonstrate that I have experience working with military lawyers in that area. Posting some opinion piece isn’t going to convince me.

I wasn’t intimidated; consistently when people have no basis for their opinions in posts, they cite their alleged bonafides. You don’t explain how the cited information is incorrect, however.

And before Obama claims he didn’t have a choice, he had a choice. Bush, Reagan and Clinton all filed briefs in court opposing current federal law as being unconstitutional

  315. kdgamergirl says:

I ignored them because again you launched into a ranting and raving elitest fest and it’s pathetic. I’ve explained DADT on several posts. What people don’t get it what the President actually has power to do and what the consequences of simply repealing the law. Obama is not the Legislature in Chief.

I said I had experience with DADT complaints. I apologize if that wasn’t made clear. The UCMJ is hopelessly outdated and Congress needs to address that. The only power Obama has over DADT is to repeal the order in which case under the UCMJ it would be illegal for gays to serve regardless of whether they say anything. He can only stop discharges in cases of national emergency and that’s for reservists or on an individual basis.

You’re association of the DOJ with the President implies that you expect him to have some sort of control over it. The President should not have any control over the DOJ like Bush did. That’s what checks and balances should look like. I’ve stated several times that I don’t agree with the language used so slamming me on that is ridiculous.

You accuse me of not answering your questions but you respond to mine with blah blah blah. Legally President Obama extended what rights he could based on DOMA. The DOJ has a duty to uphold the law which you expect them to do with torture but they don’t have a duty to uphold DOMA? It makes no sense.

It is not the job of the DOJ or courts to make legislation. It is their job to interpret the law as it stands. That is for Congress and god forbid they should their jobs.

Still you act like an impatient, whiny child and while I was adult enough to apologize for my moron remark you continue to spout anger. It’s hard to discuss something with someone who is so hateful to anyone who disagrees.

Publican, in the Gospels, is derived from the publicanus of the Vulgate, and signifies a member or employee of the Roman financial companies who farmed the taxes. From the time of the Republic the Roman State relieved itself of the trouble of collecting the taxes in the provinces by putting up the taxes of each in a lump sum to auction. The highest bidder received the authorization to extort the sum from the province in question. Such a system afforded ample opportunity for rapacious exactions on the part of the company and its officials, and the abuses were often intolerable.

No, Ralph. It’s your fault for cowering from the real events that Obama is committing to, which you blithely ignore. The name-calling is what you’d prefer, because information, links, informed sources, by your own admission, none of these interests you as you rejected them outright.

So does this mean you take responsibility for your name-calling?

Your reasoning puzzles me. Perhaps because it’s based on fundamental misunderstandings.

I don’t “prefer” name-calling, first of all, and I wonder what reasoning you used to reach that conclusion? You claim that “by my own admission”, information, links, informed sources don’t interest me.

You obviously misunderstood my lack of interest. I said (I thought quite clearly) that your argument doesn’t interest me. You keep conflating “facts” with “you argument”. They are two different things, and it would help you if you kept that in mind.

The reason your argument doesn’t interest me is that I already have judged that your conclusions are intemperate and not inline with my own perspective. Yes, I know that Obama has failed to do some important things as President. I have a little more patience with him than you do, and you assume that this means I am some “Obamaphile”. Why would I continue to debate someone who makes leaps like that? There’s no point. Hence my disinterest.

You don’t want discussion, you don’t want information, you want to be among slavish agreement without question.

I thought my reputation around here was a little more reasonable than that; in fact, I think most of the posters I respect here would not recognize me in this description you offer.

It actually sounds like a description calculated to dismiss the ideas of another without any effort. Whether that serves your purpose or not, I can’t say.

My raising the nasty turn of events means you have to reevaluate your judgment; and that is so repugnant to you that you’d rather attack the agent of that revelation rather than confront your own ignorance and duplicity.

I reevaluate my judgment all the time. Why do you assume that it is “repugnant” to me? Simply because I haven’t accepted your assessment of the president’s performance without question?

I also confront my own ignorance all the time. I confront it by doing research and striving to inform myself. If you think I’d rather “attack” than inform myself, then I think your judgment is a little skewed. “Duplicity” is another matter, as I’m not even sure what you mean by that charge in this context.

Again, I said I disagree with the justification used in the brief. I’ve said it several times now. I found it offensive and I have stated so but I fail to see what that has to do with the President. He has no control over the DOJ.

I ask once again, why is this not legal in your opinion? You haven’t explained, merely launched into verbose, but documentedly threadbare dispute of the statement. Restating your original claim doesn’t strengthen your position because the contradiction I posted by informed authority goes unanswered.

That goes for you too hypocrite. What is it you’re asking me about what’s legal? DADT or DOMA? I stated that I have experience with DADT not DOMA. I was in the military I think that qualifies me to comment on it. What don’t you get about me not approving of the legal justification DOMA? Stop assuming I approved of it when I have stated several times I was mad about it. I wrote to the DOJ, my senators and the White House instead of whining like you do.

And before Obama claims he didn’t have a choice, he had a choice. Bush, Reagan and Clinton all filed briefs in court opposing current federal law as being unconstitutional

  390. hanshiro the antlion says:

    My point exactly: (via Greenwald:)

In general, how much one criticizes Obama is largely a function of the areas on which one tends to focus. If I had spent the week writing about Iran, I would be largely defending — and praising — Obama’s very wise restraint, even in the face of bipartisan political pressure, when it comes to interfering in Iran’s internal political disputes. His private and public refusal to cheer on all of Israel’s policies is also commendable. Conversely, those who focus on gay issues have been understandably furious with the administration, and in the areas of civil liberties, secrecy, and his Justice Department generally, the administration has been nothing short of abysmal. Criticizing the Right for its support of these positions is understandable, but in our modern political culture, the President is, far and away, the driving force, and those who supported him can have far more of an impact pointing out, rather than ignoring, the role he is playing in advancing these policies.

    Is our posters learning yet?

(Too be fair. There are a couple restaurants that fly in fresh seafood daily but they require a second mortgage or a first-born son in payment and still can’t compete with my favorite recipes.)

I was spoiled. I spent several years in San Diego and my Dad grew up just outside Boston. One of my uncles was a lobster fisherman and visiting “Back East” was an excuse to eat 24/7.

Actually, the lobster isn’t such an issue. They’re not quite the same out of an aquarium but they are still fresh. What I really miss are the bay scallops, flounder, and real clam chowder.

Seriously? I can still taste the sourdough bread, fresh out of the oven, on Fisherman’s Wharf. Mmmmm…

I’m going to take a wild guess that the remainder of your diet does not consist of elk, venison, wild turkey, taters, and Kokanee beer — cuz I’m pretty sure you’re not from northern Idaho. ;)

I just got back from walking a dog that one of my neighbors is sheltering for the local pound. It’s a pregnant German Shepard that was found wandering the roads in an area with a lot of foreclosed $250,000+ homes. The dog couldn’t wait to get back inside in front of a fan and I’m dripping wet. Oh for an Arctic front right now!

My neighbor works nights and gave me a key to his place and bought me several cases of beer for walking and checking in on the dog, but damn it, it is too hot to even drink beer!

We had a lovely 70 degree day, no humidity. Perfect. :)

It seems WAY too early for things to be that hot, even that far south, Pachy. Are these temps unusual?

How is it possible that it’s too hot to drink beer? ;)

  406. Zooey says:

No worries, AmericasBack, the free market will handle it.

  407. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

AmericasBack, if you have a CD player I have a selection of music including Tommy Dorsey, Frank Sinatra, Mel Torme, Grateful Dead, Billy Joel, Enya, Sade, some opera, lots of classical and the Prague Funfair Band but no Contemporary Christian music.

Zooey, the problem with drinking beer in this heat is that you feel wasted after 2 or 3 beers and alcohol dehydrates you, so they say.

I would suggest everyone meet at Holling’s Bar in Cicily, Alaska but I wouldn’t want to chance running into the Palin family. How about Ruby’s Cafe in Dog River, Saskatchewan?

  408. pete says:

Well, Zooey, I eat most anything that can be hunted or collected from the wild. We’re a little thin on elk but plenty of venison, wild turkey, freshwater fish, wild asparagus, morel and puff-ball mushrooms, ducks/geese, pheasant, grouse, rabbit, squirrel, and most any critter not protected.

Heck! If I can catch it? I can kill it, clean it, cook it and eat it. I’ve even tried beaver (disappointing) and raccoon (makes a great sloppy joe).

I’m not familiar with Kokanee beer but, I’m a big fan of Leinenkugel’s.

  409. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Zooey, yes these temperatures are unusual this early. I feel sorry for the horses hauling tourists around in the Historic District. They have it a lot worse than the horses in New York’s Central Park.

Backup, sounds like all those beer commercials on TV have been getting to you. Use the remote! ;)

  413. pete says:

I love good beer and I don’t think advertising has anything to do with it. Why? Because I rarely see/hear a commercial for a beer I like.

Most American beer is, as Eric Idle said; “like making love in a canoe. It’s phucking close to water“.

If we’re drinking a German lager, a British ale, or even a nice stout (especially with a good cigar)? count me in. But I can’t come up with a single national brand I would buy.
(NOTE: Free beer is “good” regardless of brand.)

  414. backup says:

    Jane. maybe you’re right.

I have been drinking more. I also have ordered a couple hundred ShamWows, two dozen Slap Chops, and a lifetime membership to Girls Gone Wild, and Jeff Paul’s Shortcut’s to Millions internet system.

I’d use the remote to change the channel, but the batteries are dead and the spares are all the way in the kitchen.

    June 20th, 2009 at 10:14 am
    _______

The difference is that Steele takes, “I’ve made a firm commitment that health care reform will not add to the federal budget deficit over the next decade,” to mean that it will not add to the deficit while you take it to mean maybe it won’t add to the deficit. ;)

  422. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Keith, I sang in Prague on a concert tour and ran across these guys playing on the street playing an accordion, violin, double bass, flute and fagot and singing. Several choir members bought their CD. They were classically trained and very entertaining. I saw them again on a Rick Steves’ Travels in Europe episode from Prague under a different name.

I also discovered Pilzner Urquell, the world’s first Pilsner beer, brewed in Pilzn, Czech. Its availabe in the U.S. now.

My eclectic music also includes a group called La Nef doing Music for Joan the Mad and Musica Ficta performing Francisco Guerrero’s Motecta. Both of the albums are music from 15th and 16th century Spain , during the Reconquista, and have Moorish influence.

  423. Keith says:

    Pachydiplax de St. Augustine,
I would probably like the Prague band if I heard them. I was just trying to be funny. They played a fagot???
I’ve had that beer in Britain and France. Never been to Czech republic. Would like to someday. Karlovy Vary looks great in the Casino Royal film.

Maybe someone can help me out? About thirty years ago I had a German malt liquor called “Special 28″. It was 28 proof and delicious but I can’t recall the brand. I haven’t seen it since and don’t get any hits online. Does that ring any bells out there?

  427. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Keith, the fagot is what we call an oboe I think. Prague is a great city and I believe the 1st Mission Impossible movie was filmed there. Our tour guide said the palace guards at the Prague Castle adopted the Hollywood uniforms used in the movie over their former uniforms. The Charles Bridge, also featured in a scene in the movie is a tourist destination, but watch out for the pickpockets.

I was intrigued by the sidewalks and squares that were made of small square stone pieces. The people who installed them were very artistic. Prague also has a good streetcar system and very inexpensive to ride.

  428. backup says:

I used to live in Laguna Beach. (favorite place on the planet). I’m interested in what the California people think is the answer to the state’s budget crisis.

  429. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Keith, I sang bass with a college choir. The choir sang liturgical music and many of our concerts in Europe were sung as part of a church service. We sang masses with Latin lyrics but also did songs in German, French, Spanish and English.

  430. Pachydiplax de St. Augustine says:

Keith, it behooves me to add that we were an A Capella choir and memorized all the music. Sometimes when the choir was just sightseeing the choir director would have the choir sing a song or two while we gave people fliers advertising our next concert. Many times we sang impromptu concerts in restaurants we ate at and hotels we stayed at. They were great ice breakers for locals and resulted in many nights of free beer.

  431. ralph the wonder locust says:
