Under Misspelled Banner, Buchanan And White Nationalist Brimelow Argue For English-Only Initiatives

On Saturday, Pat Buchanan hosted a conference to discuss how Republicans can regain a majority in America. During one discussion, panelists suggested supporting English-only initiatives as a prime way of attracting “working class white Democrats.” The discussion ridiculed Judge Sotomayor for the fact that she studied children’s classics to improve her grammar while attending college. The panelists also suggested that, without English as the official language, President Obama would force Americans to speak Spanish.

One salient feature of the event was the banner hanging over the English-only advocates. The word conference was spelled “Conferenece.” View it here:

Pat Buchanan and Peter Brimelow

The panelists pressed on with their anti-bilingualism diatribe without noting the irony of the obvious misspelling on the banner:

PAT BUCHANAN: Judge Sotomayor is up there at school in New York, she gets a scholarship to Princeton, she’s graduated with all these big honors and awards they said she never won. What’s she doing there in the summer? They said her adviser told her to read children’s classics so she can learn English better. How do you graduate number one in Princeton if you’re in the summer and you’re reading Rumpelstiltskin and Snow White? [laughter] [...]

PETER BRIMELOW: I really do recommend the language issue because you know that polls better than immigration and affirmative action. Eighty-five percent of Americans say they would favor official language policy. The wonderful thing about this issue if you look at what’s going to actually happen here is you’re going to find that the Obama administration is going to gradually institute institutional bilingualism in the country. It’s going to be required to speak Spanish in key positions, the police force and so on. This is a direct attack on the American working class because they are not going to be bilingual.

ThinkProgress attended the event and obtained audio of the panel. Listen here:

Mocking Sotomayor’s struggle to learn English has become a habit for Buchanan. On CSPAN a few weeks ago, Buchanan tried to undermine Sotomayor’s qualifications by saying she had read Pinocchio as a part of her “college work.” Buchanan was referencing a New York Times article, which talked about how hard Sotomayor had to work to graduate at the top of her class from Princeton. The article stated that she “spent summers reading children’s classics she had missed in a Spanish-speaking home and ‘re-teaching’ herself to write ‘proper English’ by reading elementary grammar books.” Sotomayor never read children’s books as part of her “college work” and the books consisted of classics such as “Huckleberry Finn” and “Pride and Prejudice” — not Snow White, as Buchanan contends.

Peter Brimelow, one of the panelists to the event, is the editor of Vdare.com. He has written extensively against immigration and has long advocated that the GOP must “appeal to its base: white Americans.” Brimelow has defended accusations that he writes and publishes white supremacist material by declaring his content to be merely “white nationalist.”

Update Brimelow also urged the attendees of the Buchanan conference to attack affirmative action in an effort to attract the votes of "young whites" and "yellow people." After claiming it would be "suicidal" for any "white man" to vote for Obama, Brimelow contended that immigrants should not be eligible for affirmative action because "they weren’t slaves to this country, they’ve never been discriminated against":

The only one I’ve ever heard say that was Pat Buchanan.

I suspect anyone graduating “number one” in Princeton (or any other accredited school) probably does so by working his/her ass off, whether one reads “Rumpelstiltskin” or not. I would be willing to bet that whether Sotomayor was reading “Snow White” or “Pride and Prejudice”, that wasn’t all she was doing.

Question for Buchanan, though — How do you get taken seriously by anybody but the kool-aid drinking choir when you pose such inane scenarios? Answer — you don’t.

The modern day Republic party is so ignorant and hateful it’s really sad. My father who was a died in the wool Republic would have had a fit over what his party has become. He once told me (a confirmed leftist) that before I died, I would one day vote for a Republic. Funny thing….he voted for Bill Clinton before he died.

Arn – unfortunately, not just the “blue dogs” because the rest could call them out on it.

Don’t kid yourself – there will probably NEVER be another issue that this many Americans agree on, at least not when it comes to public policy.

Don’t let obama and the dems get away with saying its the repugs fault or the budget’s fault.

And we cannot just blame some dems when the rest are actually just sitting on their hands an going along with a VERY unpopular plan that totally undermines what the vast majority of Americans wants.

    ____________________________________________________________

More fear-mongering by the right (if you can call a threat of having to learn Spanish something to be frightened of).

In the first place, I doubt President Obama would be able to mandate institutional bilingualism on a national level, even if he wanted to. The only real effective way of accomplishing this would be to have Spanish declared an “official” language (sort of like French in Canada). That could be problematic, since we haven’t even declared English an “official” language. Sheesh — and I thought the paranoia about how he allegedly wants to take away everybody’s guns was loony…

And in the second place, many police officers, firefighters, EMT personnel, and other public safety workers in areas with even a modest Spanish-speaking segment have managed to deal with the language barrier — through learning key phrases in Spanish (such as “halt!”, “Police!”, or “you’re under arrest!”) or having interpreters readily available. Each municipality sets their own guidelines based on community need. Communities with no Spanish-speaking population, but perhaps a German, Hmong, or Serbian population adjust their public safety departments accordingly. This is already going on. I’m not afraid of it. Why are these blowhards?

  48. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Speaking of Republicans, let’s check out a brief history of Republicans and Iran. In 1953, Republican President Eisenhower gave the go-ahead to our CIA to help the Brits overthrow the democracy in Iran and put in the vile dictator Shah. It took the Iranian people twenty-six long years to get rid of the Shah. After the Iranian Revolution of 1979, what was the Republican response. First of course, there was the treasonous arms-for-hostages deal, engineered by Reagan aides, so that they could illegally funnel millions of dollars to the thuggish Contras in Nicargua, who were trying to destroy the progressive new government there.

Later, Reagan gave WMDs (poison gas) to dictator Saddam of Iraq and egged him on to start a vicious war against Iran. Reagan hoped to destroy the Iranian Revolution and to bring back a dictator who would ensure that we got cheap oil.

Bush in the 21st century, demonized the Iranian government as part of the so-called “axis of evil.” The actual axis of evil under Bush ran from the White House to the CIA to the Defense Dept.

Now big-mouthed hypocritical Republicans are demanding that President Obama be more forceful in defense of free elections in Iran. Funny, these same Republicans were silent as mice when the GOP was hacking, rigging, fixing, Dielbolding and stealing elections in 2000, 2002 and 2002…

  49. Another Joe says:

Maybe WMD was a typo and it should have been WTF?!?!?!?!

Maybe you are right – spelling is important and the war crimes and crimes against humanity were all just an honest mistake. Perhaps Iraq really had:

    W4WG
    WAG
    WAIS
    WAITS
    WAN
    WAOSS

    WATS
    WBT
    WCS
    WDM
    WELL
    WFW
    WIA
    WI-FI
    WIFI

No wonder dur chimpfurher couldn’t find any WMD when he looked all over the white house for the national press (eliciting great laughter and applause from those present with “r’s” and “d’s” after their names).

    It was all a misspelling…

Looking at the panel behind this garbage reminds me of that movie “Revenge of The Nerds”
    ___________________________________________________________

Interesting. This poster spews insults but provides no evidence to back them up. I can only assume he has some bizarre need to hurl invective and doesn’t feel the need for any of it to make sense.

“Unioncratic Party”? I suppose the Democratic Party has shown far more support for labor unions (and laborers in general) than the Republican Party has, but why is this an insult?

“Jim Jones Soros”? I don’t see the connection between George Soros and Jim Jones — perhaps someone can help me out here? It appears to be just random baseless conflation.

A “Conservative smear Stink Tank”? Um…I believe a “smear” is when one tells (or suggests) lies about an opponent. While I admit TP sometimes twists things unnecessarily in their headlines, they’re pretty good about sticking to the truth and quoting people verbatim.

And then there are the usual insults about the intelligence of the TP staff, although I admit the slam about their physical appearance is new.

I’m always amazed at people who come here and whine about the site. It’s a site dedicated to the progressive point of view — a perspective TP has never tried to hide (unlike media who claim to be “fair and balanced” while pushing an ideological agenda).

At least some trolls attempt to make some kind of lame point about the topic of the thread. Some conservative posters make intelligent points (but I don’t call those posters trolls). This one just feels obligated to take a crap and leave, which surely puts him at the bottom of the dungheap.

Why do they do this? Is it for a cheap thrill? Are they getting paid to do this? Do they truly not know how to Google for sites that reflect their kind of thinking? It truly makes one marvel at how some people truly need to get a life.

Puh-leeeeeeeeze…who does Brimelow really think he’s fooling? He’s free to call his material whatever he likes, of course — he can call it a head of lettuce for all that I care — but it makes no real difference in the end since he’s still talking about the same thing. As Vice President Cheney once said, “you can put lipstick on a pig — but it’s still a pig.” Changing the name of a thing in order to make it sound like something different still doesn’t change the fundamental essence of the thing one iota. Brimelow’s claim that he’s a “white nationalist” rather than a “white supremacist” is nothing more than a convenient, self-serving euphemism on his part. It doesn’t change the fact that he’s a racist any more than a combat general referring to civilian deaths in wartime as “collateral damage” makes said civilians any less human or himself any less responsible for their deaths. It’s just an exercise in self-justification…nothing more.

Then when you ask Johnny or Susie have they have to say about the situation, it turns out that you practically need a translator to get their responses. The East Texans are the worst but there are others as well. I remember listening to one good ol’ boy TA from North Texas talking about “higher” in lecture and it was a good month before I figured out that he was referring to the stuff that grows out of a mammal’s skin.

This should be an English first country and ANYONE that wants to live, work and stay here should be required to learn and speak English. ***********************************************************

With all due respect, LVDL…do you have any idea how hard it is to learn English? English is considerably more difficult to learn than a good many other languages — largely due to the fact that modern English incorporates words borrowed from other languages. English grammar is very inconsistent when it comes to such things as plurals, pronunciation, and verb tenses. As an example, consider the following English words — bough, cough, enough, though, and through. Each one uses the same basic dipthong of “o-u-g-h”…and yet each one of these words is pronounced differently. If memory serves (and it usually does), this is something you quite simply don’t see in Spanish — or indeed, in many other languages — where the same set of letters is always pronounced exactly the same way. Think this might make it harder for someone? I would.

It also takes a long time for any person learning a second language to develop true fluency since most native speakers rely much more than even they themselves realize on slang, idiom, and colloquialism — and these almost never translate well from one language to another, since they often mean something different than what the words literally imply. For that matter, let’s talk about legalese — a language which is hard enough even for native English speakers to understand! Can you imagine how difficult it might be trying to decipher something as confusing as that when English is not your native language — especially when your paperback Whatever-To-English dictionary doesn’t even include many of the more specialized terms? Did that thought ever occur to you?

It’s also a well-established fact that young people generally find it much easier to learn a new language than older people do. This is at least one of the reason — if not the reason — why you see many immigrant families with parents and/or grandparents who don’t speak English well (if at all) while the first generation of children born here usually don’t have trouble speaking English.

Finally, if you really believe that most Americans who travel outside the US really make much of an effort to speak other languages, I suggest you get that thought out of your head right now. The stereotype of the “Ugly American” exists for a reason…one of those reasons being the fact that a good many Americans still don’t make much effort to speak the language of the countries they’re visiting — with or without pocket translators — and still do expect other people to accommodate them. Fortunately for them, English is by now spoken in many parts of the world — in part because people in those countries have made an effort to learn another language, something which the majority of Americans have not done. Unfortunately, the fact that English is spoken in many parts of the world has also encouraged many Americans to be lazy when it comes to traveling overseas — and it’s not a point in our favor.

The age-old pesky U.S.-Mexico border problem has taxed the resources of both countries, led to long lists of injustices, and appears to be heading only for worse troubles in the future. Guess what? The border problem can never be solved. Why? Because the border IS the problem! It’s time for a paradigm change.

Never fear, a satisfying, comprehensive solution is within reach: the Megamerge Dissolution Solution. Simply dissolve the border along with the failed Mexican government, and megamerge the two countries under U.S. law, with mass free 2-way migration eventually equalizing the development and opportunities permanently, with justice and without racism, and without threatening U.S. sovereignty or basic principles.

To read the details, Google “Megamerge Dissolution Solution”.
