DeMint refuses to vouch for Sanford’s character: ‘Who knows?’

This afternoon, Fox News’ Glenn Beck suggested that Gov. Mark Sanford’s (R-SC) apparent disappearance is simply a media ploy to “discredit” the governor, and that his wife and others knew his whereabouts. (They did not.) When Beck asked Sen. Jim DeMint (R-SC) whether he could “vouch for [Sanford's] character,” DeMint refused:

BECK: Can you vouch for his character, that he is what he seems to be?

DEMINT: He always has been up front with me, but, you know, who knows? I don’t know if we can vouch for each other’s character, but he is a good friend of mine and obviously I hope he is okay.

Watch it:

This morning, Sanford’s office declared that the governor was “hiking” on the Appalachian Trail, and would be back in the office tomorrow. However, NBC’s Greenville, SC affiliate is reporting that “a federal agent spotted Sanford in the [Atlanta] airport boarding a plane,” and that a missing state vehicle — presumably the car Sanford took — was found at the Atlanta airport as well.

FreeMarketLiberal ignores the possibility that Sanford might be, shall we say…unbalanced. We’re talking about the Governor of South Carolina. Seems clear to me that given Sanford’s performance since November and now possible instability, it is an issue.
The people of SC deserve better.

Unconstitutional “CZARS” and inflation by this administrations spending will only benefit the Conservatives in 2012.

    Gee….

There was a time when being “progressive” and “liberal” mean being concerned about socioeconomic issues.

Wonder when the powers that be here decided to change that. Did anyone else see this:

Obama warns of worse economy to come

President Barack Obama painted a bleak picture Tuesday of the economy, warning unemployment will get worse, and vowed to act on climate change and health care as long-term solutions.

Guess good news is that he is tying meaningful change into getting Americans back to work. But the bad news is, the billions and billions that went to wall street did not help mainstreet.

There is an awful lot riding on successful healthcare reform that virtually every other progressive site acknowledges.

Good thing we can always count on coming here for the inane and pointless.

And some can even say that bloggin’ about the backwash is somehow a “progressive” thing to do!

And perhaps then it will undermine repugs, making it more difficult for dems to hide behind the cop-out of “bipartisanship” when they sell their liberal/progressive base out.

I didn’t think it could get much worse than criticizing buchanan for his “grammer” because he was photographed under a sign he probably had nothing to do with and may not even have noticed, but most of the frontpage post that have followed prove me wrong.

    pete,
There’s something inherently evil and selfish about Sanford. I don’t doubt that he may be a little crazed, but he craves power and attention too much to just give up in that way. I hope he wouldn’t. Some lunatics are willful and defiant – too defiant to just kill themselves. Who knows, anything is possible.

Answer my question, why isn’t the “private sector” creating jobs?

  53. pete says:

This is probably futile but, I would be remiss not to try again. So, what the Hell?

The thing is, Another Joe. I’m a patient realist by nature. I’m not a “progressive” or a “liberal”. I never expect those in power to be altruistic. All I can count on is that they may come to the conclusion that my best interests may coincide with theirs. It doesn’t happen often.

That being said, I find it difficult to condemn politicians for their apparent positions on legislation that hasn’t even been written. And I won’t assign a position to one who hasn’t announced one. Unless they come out with a firm stand, for or against, based solely on party lines. In this respect one can’t make a realistic comparison between the GOoPers and the Dems.

But? As much as I am disgusted by the GOP knee-jerk opposition to EVERYTHING, I would not be much more comfortable if President Obama announced that he was giving the Congressional Democrats, or anyone else, unqualified support by virtue of affiliation. And I don’t really want or expect the Congressional Democrats to work as a dogma driven block.

You feel betrayed. I don’t. I can’t get past the simple fact that every issue our government is dealing with is, by virtue of the damage done by previous legislators and President, a full-blown emergency. And, as a practical matter, emergency measures are not the best place to make fundamental change. The fact is that people operating under the stress of an emergency often make bad decision or decisions that only apply during the emergency.

Heck! The DOJ and other appointed positions are still full of Regent “University” grads and Bushco lickspittles. The whole damn government still needs fumigating and little can really happen until the Bushbots are gone. They constitute the enemy within the machine.

I like the an@logy of a car going in the wrong direction at highway speed. The best way to deal with it is to: slow down, stop, turn around, chart a course, and then accelerate towards the desired destination. Throwing the car in reverse is foolhardy and dangerous and, usually, disastrous.

There is a desire to reverse course on a number of issues and some steps are being taken. But, I can’t get too worked up about half-measures because there’s always room to tweak the measures taken based on real-time results.

I don’t want sweeping, untested, and permanent action while we are in a state of such national crisis. I want our elected officials to treat our country like a car going in the wrong direction.

    1. Slow down.
    2. Stop.
    3. Turn around.
    4. Choose a new direction.
    5. Accelerate in the desired direction.

I don’t expect perfection from anybody and, in fact, I expect mistakes. Mistakes are not too bad if they are small ones. But we can’t compound the huge mistakes of the past with new ones.

  54. Another Joe says:

Point is, joe, even those that oppose progressive ideals have to acknowledge that the movement was important.

Progressive ideals still are, not matter how people want to twist those words now.

Do you think I would just link to progressive sites to demonstrate that there clearly is a progressive tradition that was centered around socioeconomic issues?

You are much sillier than I thought if you think that “proof” had to exclude what the other side said.

That was Bush. Now, I see Obama is not changing this bailout trend. It’s disheartening, but it is far better to have Obama then McCain at the helm.

It seems all conservatives think alike and wouldn’t dare think outside the party line. We here at TP are not like that. There has been plenty of comments voicing displeasure with Obama. Study: Women look away more from abnormal babies

WASHINGTON – Puzzling new research suggests women have a harder time than men looking at babies with facial birth defects. It’s a surprise finding. Psychiatrists from the Harvard-affiliated McLean Hospital, who were studying perceptions of beauty, had expected women to spend more time than men cooing over pictures of extra-cute babies. Nope.

There are three planets in our solar system that have CO2 in their atmospheres. The atmosphere on two of them is mainly CO2.

Now take a look at the average and min-max surface temperatures:

Venus: 855 degF Avg. (67 mill mi. from the Sun)
Earth: -128 degF to 136 degF (91 mill mi. from the Sun)
Mars: -200 degF to 32 degF (128 mill mi. from the Sun)

Now tell me again the effect CO2 is having?

    June 23rd, 2009 at 9:42 pm

The answer lies in the total mass of the atmosphere. Venus and Mars both have the same relative amount of carbon dioxide in their atmospheres, but Venus’ atmosphere is 100 times thicker than Earth’s atmosphere and Mars’ is about 100 times thinner than Earth’s. Mars is also more than 2.5 times farther from the Sun than Venus is, so it receives only about 1/7 of the total sunlight that Venus does at the top of the atmosphere.

Venus’s atmosphere acts like a very thick and heavy blanket, while Mars’ atmosphere is not much more than a very light sheet. Combined with the amount of incident solar radiation, you can begin to understand why Mars’s greenhouse effect is so small.

ABC News president calls GOP’s healthcare attacks a ’sorry spectacle’

The GOP does not like to be told “No.” And, according to ABC News President David Westin, they are not above throwing a “sorry spectacle” to get that point across.

That’s why all 40 members of the Republicans’ newly-formed, so-called “Media Fairness Caucus” signed a letter (PDF link) attacking ABC’s planned conversation on healthcare reform, which will broadcast from the White House on June 24. The group takes exception to being denied ad spots to counter the president’s advocacy of universal health insurance. They claim ABC News will present a one-sided program intended to support the White House’s proposals.

Girlfriend?!?!?!?!? Sanford is a “family-values” bible-humping republican. His colleagues are praying that all he was doing was “hiking the trail” with his GIRLfriend…he was spelunking in the chocolate caverns with a paid guide…

    the great GOPsby Says:

    =========
Your living proof the conservatives are very clubby, narrow-minded people who see themselves as inclusive “fear hate mongers people?

BTW why are you hating on just them?

  187. Bluestocking says:

This morning, Sanford’s office declared that the governor was “hiking” on the Appalachian Trail, and would be back in the office tomorrow. However, NBC’s Greenfield, SC affiliate is reporting that “a federal agent spotted Sanford in the [Atlanta] airport boarding a plane,” and that a missing state vehicle — presumably the car Sanford took — was found at the Atlanta airport as well.

    ***********************************************************

Since most mobile telephones can be traced via geolocation as long as they’re turned on, and given the fact that the signal for Sanford’s mobile was recently traced to the Atlanta area, it seems fairly clear that the story from the Greenfield NBC affiliate is very likely accurate — which in turn calls what Sanford’s representatives said into question. So the $250,000 question is…what’s really going on? Could they be trying to hide something? If so, what? One thing is certain…the facts don’t match up right.

Considering that the Appalachian Trail extends for much of the length of our eastern coastline, I don’t understand why Sanford really needed to go down as far as Atlanta to hike there when all he needed to do was cross the state line into Tennessee (the Trail apparently doesn’t pass through South Carolina). For that matter, since appearances would suggest that Sanford drove down to Atlanta, why was he boarding a plane? Why not simply drive back? Conversely, why did he drive down there if he was planning to come back by air? The fact that the missing state vehicle was found at the airport seems to rule out the possibility that something went wrong with it to prevent him from driving back.

It’s bad enough that Sanford apparently impulsively decided to walk off the job and disappear for an impromptu four-day weekend without offering any advance notice — something which for the average working stiff would probably have been fired — but dishonesty on top of irresponsibility isn’t likely to do him any favors. If Sanford hopes to continue with his political career, he needs to come clean completely about where he’s been and what he’s been doing for the past four days…and he owes the citizens of South Carolina an apology for running out on them. They are (or are supposed to be) his bosses, after all…not he theirs.

  192. Bobwurst says:

Bluestocking, the AT starts at Springer Mt, in NORTHERN GA, so you’re right as rain about that. The “offical” explaination will be that he’s hiking the trail in sections, (a common way to hike it) and that he needed to fly north to catch the section he was hiking. freemarket is still crying about gm shareholders? Shareholders deserve no sympathy. You sound like a fox commentator. Cry about capital all you want, but years of outsourcing prove we need middle class people here creating things and buying junk to anchor OUR economy, because your cfo’s dont keep the money here. I call his move a step in the right direction.

And by the way WE KNOW CHICAGO IS CORRUPT! I was here when daley dug x’s into meigs field, leased the meters below market value for nearly a century, blah blah rezko, unions, and leveled public housing to put in upscale neighboorhoods (the list goes on). We try to do something about it, but cant fix it yet. Just because obama was here doesn’t mean he did it, just like your ayers smear, it’s some stupid rumor that you try and contort into an evildoing. Hey keep it up, while your busy smearing, he busy fixing a country.

But we also have not been able to link your complaint to reality. keep trying to tie obama to it and your attempts will be fruitless.

By allowing the trolls and thus increasing the number of hits per blog entry, they think they are gaining stature. What good is that stature going to be when they have chased away all the people who have contributed to this blog for the last couple of years. 285. wizard2000 says:

So, what would have happened if a natural disaster had happened in South Carolina during the time Gov. Sanford disappeared?

President Obama would have taken charge of that state’s security response.

    What?

Don’t you remember the law former President Bush pushed through the Republican-controlled Congress in late 2006, about one year after Hurricane Katrina?

You know, the law that all fifty state governors (Republican and Democrat alike) vehemently protested, because it usurped their authority as governor during any state of emergency declared by whomever was in the White House?

    Riiiigghhhhtttt. That law.

So if there had been an emergency that had occurred in South Carolina while Gov. Sanford was “off” somewhere, then the Obama White House have had all the authority it needed to step in and assume control…just like what happened during Hurricane Ike in Texas last year…when President Bush replaced Gov. Perry for a short while, becoming governor of Texas once again, with Chertoff at DHS being put of charge along the Texas Gulf Coast.

  288. pete says:

Whatever are the GOoPers going to do for candidates? Jindal got his moment in prime time and proved he’s not ready for prime time. Sanford went AWOL in a very public way. Liz Cheney, simply by her ability to form complete sentences, has supplanted Bible Spice as the token woman. Steele? Well, he’s Steele.

With each passing day it looks like they will have to push Newt and I don’t think that will be pretty. If they weren’t so utterly contemptible? I’d feel sorry for them. They got nuthin!

  289. hormiga brava chavez says:

    Hi Jane E. Schnieder,

Jon Stewart is too funny. He’s just wrapped up with Larry David who is also very funny in a weird sort of way.

  290. Jane E. Schneider says:

ranus, it’s not up yet, but check tomorrow at http://www.thedailyshow.com/video/videos.jhtml.
It’s part of Jason Jones’ trip to Iran – in this clip, Jason tells a young man and woman that he’s from The Daily Show, and the young man exclaims “The Daily Show! Hi, Jon Stewart!”, then does the imitation. What a pisser!

  291. ranus69 says:

But what’s even more compelling to this is the fact that the SC legislature has no idea what to do in an event like this since Sanford is probably the first gov in SC to have done something like this.

Sanford is pretty much FUBAR he won’t or shouldn’t ever get reelected to another office again.

  292. Zooey says:

“DeMint refuses to vouch for Sanford’s character.”

  306. dbadass says:

Sorry pete. BTW: Do you or anyone know much about white sea bass? It is a west coast fish. Lots os stripers here…

  307. pete says:

Do I know about white sea bass? Just how to catch ‘em, clean ‘em, and cook ‘em. I spent five years in San Diego and we had a boat.

They are actually a croaker rather than a relative of stripers. Firm white meat with a bit of a sweet taste. Any recipe one would use for halibut, or even cod, should work but it’s best to avoid heavy sauces.

  308. dbadass says:

Are they supposed to be so mushy or is it the delay in shipping or maybe a less than ideal seller. I am getting cases head off/gutted. I am scaling with an electric scaler and then cutting. We are buying about 200 pounds at a time. The flesh is really soft and flakes easily. The croaker connection makes sense as I have noticed that they have a ridiculuously large swim bladder

    Another Joe Says:

  310. dbadass says:

sorry pete, I missed you reference to firm. These fish are averaging about 15-20 pounds. I just don’t like the quality but it must be the season and the price must be right becuase our buyer and sales people are pushing this crap.

  311. pete says:

Yeah, dbadass. The texture really suffers if they aren’t iced immediately though I think they still taste good. If they are coming from warmer water that might explain it. Come to think of it, we only fished for them, and other “bottom fish” during the winter months.

  312. dbadass says:

thanks for that pete. I have a 5 am wake up for the am job so I have to split but you have helped me out big time. Whereas I split before the end, I don’t supervise the clean up and I have been b itching endlessly about the fact that the drones are negligent about fresh heavy icing of everything. This gives me increased ammunition.

What is the preferred technique for recreational catching and what do you know of the commercial harvest/season?

  313. wiley says:

I just watched “Waltz with Bashir”. The last scene was a blow to the heart. I’ll be thinking about this film for a while. It’s the Tubular Bells of war films.

  314. pete says:

    You’re welcome, dbadass.

I don’t know anything about the commercial harvest but, we used to catch them on live bait, especially squid, tight on the edge of the kelp beds. They also orient on structure though I never caught one off a pier myself.

  318. Bluestocking says:

This afternoon, Fox News’ Glenn Beck suggested that Gov. Mark Sanford’s (R-SC) apparent disappearance is simply a media ploy to “discredit” the governor, and that his wife and others knew his whereabouts. (They did not.)

    ************************************************************

Correct me if I’m wrong…but my understanding is that the police were beginning to investigate Sanford’s disappearance, (which probably explains how the signal from Sanford’s mobile telephone was traced to the Atlanta area). If the police were involved, it suggests that someone called them — most likely someone on Sanford’s staff, since his wife didn’t seem to be terribly worried about her husband’s absence. Calling the police would, I think, be a perfectly natural and appropriate response when the state governor can’t be found and nobody knows where he is — and it also suggests that this was more than just a sinister plot against the governor on the part of the evil liberal media. If someone knew where he was, then why was it believed necessary to involve the police? Let’s face it…if the average citizen were to call the police and report someone missing when he/she already knows where that person is, they would very likely get in trouble for wasting the force’s time and diverting manpower away from other cases.

The fact that Beck is trying to paint this as nothing more than a lie trumped up by the media suggests that Beck is either A) uninformed or B) lying through his teeth, neither one of which puts him in a good light. I find it a bit hard to believe that Beck truly didn’t know about the police being involved — so the only option left is that he deliberately left out this piece of pertinent information so that he could distort the facts and represent the story as something other than what it was. I won’t say that the media never leaves out information or never distorts the facts for their own purposes, because we all know that they have and that they do — however, if Beck’s lying, then he’s just as guilty of this as they are and is therefore a hypocrite who’s in no position to point fingers.
