Sen. John Ensign (R-NV) reportedly received a “round of applause” from his GOP colleagues today at the weekly conference lunch, his “first meeting with them since the sex scandal that cost him his leadership position.” “All I can say for sure is that it [Ensign's speech] was very, very sincere, very heartfelt and very well received in our caucus,” said Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who was at the meeting. Ensign’s welcome is similar to the reaction Sen. David Vitter (R-LA) received, when “he was welcomed back to a closed Republican Senate luncheon with a loud standing ovation” after admitting his involvement with an escort service run by the DC Madam. However, Sen. Larry Craig (R-ID) — who faced charges of “lewd” sexual conduct in a men’s public restroom — faced calls to resign.
Ensign receives ‘round of applause’ from GOP colleagues.
And a round of high fives and a chorus of “hubba hubbas”, too, no doubt.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:07 pmNow THAT’S some great backwash…
You are all really outdoing yourself today – what possible circus can you put on the frontpage next!!!!!!
Will have to keep checking back for more obscuration and weapons of mass distraction!
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:10 pmAll irrelevance all the time now!
Way to go!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:12 pmBut in case anyone came here lookin’ for real news and/or issues of the day:
Obama comes out swinging for public option
Transcript:
The notion that all these insurance companies who say they’re giving consumers the best possible deal, if they can’t compete against a public plan as one option, with consumers making the decision what’s the best deal, that defies logic, which is why I think you’ve seen in the polling data overwhelming support for a public plan.

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:13 pmOf course they applauded him. He’s now an official member of the “Re=Thuglic Proud Pervert Club”.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:13 pmAnother JOe is reminding me more and more of a crabby old man whose only pleasure in life is complaining about stuff.

Careful there, dude, you’re gonna lose your Troll Central funding talking like that…
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:14 pmAnd now we will take you back to irrelevant repugs and or backwash-a-thon.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:15 pmEnsign receives ‘round of applause’ from GOP colleagues.
– - So, what you’re saying is his GOP colleagues gave him the clap.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:15 pmIf he ain’t miserable, he ain’t happy.
He sounds distinctly gouty.
Must be that no sex or social life thingie.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:16 pmUnfaithful GOPers get applause if the remote chance exists that they could opposite marry their amour.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:16 pmJoe, we know how to get news. We know how to contact our Congresspeoples. We know how to find other blogs. We don’t consider TP to be the center of the news universe.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:17 pmKeep it up, Republicans. Cry for the sanctity, the morality and then applaud your little buddies. Tell America how much your stands mean while your standard bearers crap on their flags.
Don’t worry, no one is really paying attention to you.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:17 pmralph. you got me. )
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:18 pmAnother Joe:
Off topic once again
Besides spamming every thread at Think Progress, what have you done to help bring about a public health care plane?
Why do you feel your opinion is more important than that of all the other bloggers?
You sir, are a pompous twit!
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:19 pmEnsign receives ‘round of applause’ from GOP colleagues.
They were all ecstatic it was Ensign who got nabbed and not themselves ……
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:19 pmSeriously, though, b-cup, I was disappointed that the NYT didn’t mention the chorus of “hubba hubbas”.
Ah well, it says the cheers were muffled. Probably the “hubba hubbas” were inaudible outside the room…

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:24 pmAnother Joe. I’m the pot calling the kettle black.
I understand your argument that the debate should focus on those that have the most influence. (Obama and Democrats). But, there is a legitimate argument for going after the detractors. It does make sense.
So, temper your distain for the attention given to the folly of the administrations opponents with the recognition that it is a component of furthering the progressive agenda.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:25 pmI wonder when the people who truly care about family values will start to vote these people out of office? Your average Republican is voting against their own morals and self interests by voting Republican.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:26 pmWhy not promote this to the frontpage:
Family find badger in toilet
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:27 pm“hubba hubbas”.
That’s what I would have done, but then again, that’s probably why I keep failing to get elected to the Senate.
Funny.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:28 pmbackup – not true, but believe and post what you may.
Even comedy central folks know that to advance progressive agendas, they have to find ways to poke fun at those that actually matter.
But enjoy the sensationalism and sideshow if you like. It’s still a free country – enjoy it while you can.

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:35 pmAnother Joe.
It’s a progressive website. There is obviously a promotion of the progressive administrations agenda and a refutation of the administration’s detractors. I agree with you that there is sometimes too much focus on the opposition that doesn’t seem to have much influence. But, there is a purpose to it. If nothing else, the red meat to keep people engaged.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:37 pmDr. Hussein Matt, have you seen The List™?
I think you’d find it right up your alley.
I suspect that b-cup’s tempered suggestion to AJ would fall short of an agreement to sign, however.

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:38 pmNow this story is becoming a REAL goof-fest:
The Sanford situation is getting even weirder:
hmmmmmmmm…. disappears on fathers day, wife hasn’t seen him nor talked to him, and the official excuse is now that he went out walking on the Appalachian trail on HIKE NAKED DAY!

June 23rd, 2009 at 7:48 pmjoe – doesn’t need a question mark – please get over your anal-retentive attitude about the english language.
It is used different ways, different contexts. It is not always meant for an academic-style essay that will be read by an audience of exactly one.
Sometimes, the language can be used in a way where a statement is worded like a question, but that statement stands on its own and actually is not seeking a reply (i.e. telling your 6 year old, “Will you please shut the door.”
But thanks for being a grammar cop – were you hear the other day when the “frontpage” was about patrick buchanan being photographed underneath a sign with a typo?
Of course, the frontpage post here had a typo – but when a wingnut happens to stand under a sign with a typo – THAT’S NEWS AROUND HERE!
And, no, joe – being caught up with the inane and irrelevant does not in any way result in “action” for change. It does the opposite.
But you are right – it is “red meat”.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:49 pmralph. I’m not signing. Another Joe’s got something to contribute.
But, I would sign up if they ever raffle off a date with Überbabe Amanda Terkel:
http://www.americanprogress.org/experts/TerkelAmanda.html
I’m not going to hold my breath on that one. Besides, my wife probably wouldn’t let me go.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:51 pmRecently Ray Taliaferro did his show on a statement Ensign made concerning cheating on his wife.
Ensign:
Ray blasted Ensign as putting the worst being cheating rather than the fact Ensign along with others are responsible for the massacre of Iraq = mass killings.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:51 pmthe pawns are the folks caught up in the meaningless, wouldn’t know how to even begin answering your question.
Now how about mine from last night:
What is more important, that cornyn lies about the national sentiment for healthcare reform or the fact that some dems use those same lies as an excuse to water down meaningful reform?
Not that I expect you to understand the issues and I know your demands will never cease ‘cuz your the biggest primate here (so you say, buddy, but I can take care of you)
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:52 pmAnother Joe Says:
But you are right – it is “red meat”.
And to think that liberals used to be thought of as relatively passive and wimpy.
Not anymore! Which in many ways is good in my opinion.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:52 pmThe applause denotes that Ensign is now an official GOP ‘made man.’
The prerequisites include any form of sexual deviation or scandal (except ‘teh gay…’), embezzlement, giving the approximation of a heartfelt/sincere/tearful or any variation of oscar-worthy performance in a speech, and bonus points if the transgression was in direct opposition to your declared position and values. Also prolonging or stalling the revelation and blaming a third party.
Humiliated wives in attendance to divert attention also score big.
Mostly, though, they are officially recognizing that old locker room tradition that one of their own ‘got some.’
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:52 pmokay. that’s good.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:53 pmdie is supposed to be did…..even with the preview button.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:53 pmSince some have indicated interest in the stanford story – according to VANITY FAIR, he has a record of being an oddball:
Now here’s some fruitcake that is worth sharing!
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:55 pmOn NPR, Lt Gov reported that the last ping on the Gov’s cell was in Atlanta. So obviously, the hiking story is BS.
Too bad, I prefered to think the family values guy that was so outraged when clinton used an intern to ash his cigar was out with the nudist on HIKE NAKED DAY after his afair was uncovered.
Now there’s a circus that you just couldn’t make up.
June 23rd, 2009 at 7:59 pmOf course Ensign recieved a round of applause. The rest of the GOPers in attendance can’t throw stones or bones with all of those skeletons in their closets! Too many of them living in glass houses too – LOL
Now Ensign needs to get a big cup of STFU juice and not EVER make another comment about the sanctity of marriage or anything else!

June 23rd, 2009 at 8:39 pmEnsign didn’t just have an affair. He had an affair with an employee who was subsequently terminated as was her husband who also worked for Ensign. The husband claims Ensign aggressively stalked his wife and ruined their lives. This is a clear abuse of power Clinton was impeached and Monica Lewinsky never even complained.
June 23rd, 2009 at 8:54 pmEnsign a dirty old pervert.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:00 pmDoodlebug, I still think there is a chance the Ensigns and Hamptons were swingers.

I hope it was as sincere and heartfelt as his vow to the Promise Keepers. Apparently cheating (technically whoring, since Ensign put his mistress’s family on the payroll) is impeachable if you’re Bill Clinton, but worthy of applause if you’re a hetero member of the Reich.
And can somebody give FreeMarketLiberal his pacifier and/or butt plug…
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:10 pmIf there is criticism to be leveled at the difficult job TP is doing, I would say that it’s been less Progressive perspective and more democratic party perspective.
To clarify, it’s no secret that you can’t swing a dead cat around without hitting a republican hypocrite or moronic republican quote; TP has been heavy on easy republican targets and lighter on ‘depthy’ issues and areas where we are less likely to be hearing urgent action on our key issues.
Again, key progressive issues, not democratic party issues. (They are not interchangable, despite inferences here in the past, and while the democrats are the majority party, I don’t give them carte blanche any more than I would republicans; though the dems certainly are more likely to allow a progressive program than the torture party.)
Any ongoing actions that are contrary to progressive ideals would be, to me, highlight-worthy and invaluable at TP. The recent reversals of the Obama justice department and alignment with bush policies have not been as prevalent here at a progressive site, where I’d expect them to be brought to attention for comment and timely action and protest.
Greenwald’s column and other sources have been invaluable in supplementing the, in comparison, dearth of information I would wish to find here. As well, since single-payer healthcare is pure progressive ideal, I would ask that actionable articles be more frequent, particularly currently. While it’s fun to just bash the insipidly desperate republicans, it would be more effective to post a list of any congressmen, particularly the dems since they are the majority party, who are resisting the healthcare legislation.
No-nonsense challenges to resistant dems by more progressive candidates are one option/threat to be availed in an email or letter. The bottom line, for me is that I want to know who is slowing a progressive advancement, dems and repubs alike. Lately, the dems have been taking a corporate slant that will bottleneck and ultimately doom progressive success. We need to be tougher and more informed faster than the next guy, especially when our allies are working against their promises to us.
TP is an excellent resource, but there’s room to improve if we are to make a real progressive mark in this favorable political climate.

Congratulations, Sen. Ensign!!
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 pmDead woman, or live man is the rule.
June 23rd, 2009 at 9:47 pmWhatta bunch of relative moralists. They came to power selling their “holier than thou” BS to the rubes. I’m so enjoying watching these hypocritical psuedo-Promisekeepers being exposed for the scumbags they are.
Lets not forget that this wasn’t just an affair of the heart…this was pay-to-play, boss-worker sex. I suspect this is just the opening Act One of Ensign’s Opus Gropus.
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:35 pmUnless it is connected with children or absolutely outrageous, I don’t believe a person’s sexual behavior should have anything to do with our opinions of them as public servants.
Larry Craig is gay? Who cares? I only care about him when it comes to what he says about his job, which is usually moronic.
Who really cares about a person’s extra-marital affairs? Republican or Democrat, it makes no difference to me. Nor should it to you. It’s ridiculous that a great prosecutor like Eliot Spitzer could me brought down by a BJ.
The only question we need to be concerned with is “Can we trust these idiots to run our affairs?”
June 23rd, 2009 at 10:46 pm“All I can say for sure is that it [Ensign's speech] was very, very sincere, very heartfelt and very well received in our caucus,” said Sen. Bob Corker (R-TN), who was at the meeting.
We’re all sinners. It happens before we have our own first sapient thought. Gawd made it (and us) that way (for some reason only He [the gender chosen here is deliberate] can understand).
This observation doesn’t apply to Democrats. The reason is obvious. Democrats are sinners (just like us) but they’re Eyyyyy-vulllll … and tools/spawn of Satan … rather than lapsed and imperfect (by Gawd’s design) humans. They deserve calumny, vitriol, and disparagement … and not the ‘understanding’ given Ensign.
This all makes sense … to me. Time for another Haldol.
Cheers,
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:16 pmI would hazard a guess that they’re applauding because it’s not them standing up there — yet.

It informs the issue of trust. The old saying, “A master reveals himself in everything he does,” (so does a fool) is applicable. If he doesn’t honor sacred vows, how can he be trusted with my tax dollars based on another sacred vow?
Notwithstanding the fact of identity to “family values” that the republicans flogged ad nauseam, the hypocrisy does take on a more prominent gravitas when these same politicians recommended resignation and impeachment for the same or similar behavior.
In other words, “Judge not, lest it come back and bite-th ye in the ass-eth.”
June 23rd, 2009 at 11:31 pmToday’s Republican Party ran on the cynical lie that they were better choices for the voter because they were morally superior…more ‘Christian’ if you will, than us Democrat Soddomites. Turns out they are hypocrites, as well taxcut and spend rubberstampers that bankrupted our economy and completely screwed up what was a reasonably well run country during the Clinton years. You do remember how Gingrich, Ensign, Craig, Hastert, DeLay, Foley, and the rest of these holier-than-thou Republicans seized on the political opportunity to impeach Clinton because of his moral transgressions?
Never again should we let these ‘family value’ Republicans anywhere near control of our federal government.

June 24th, 2009 at 11:22 amYou really can’t lump Vitter and Ensign together. It has now been reported that Ensign put the married wife of the staffer and a son on the payroll then fired both the staffer and his wife when she broke off the relationship. While Vitter was a disgrace (like Gov. Spitzer), Ensign could face federal charges and that is far more serious.
June 24th, 2009 at 12:24 pmThat’s the family values crowd. Who else would applaud a man who has committed adultery? A man who swore he would resign if the time ever came that he had done such a terrible thing. Well where is the resignation? He told Clinton to resign, and Larry Craig. Of course he said nothing about David Vitter. But he like most of the Republicans seem to think that the family values only applies to Democrats and a few like Craig.
I imagine the GOP is glad it was a woman he had his affair with and not a man. But then there are the possible ethics violations regarding his money paid to his mistresses 19 year old son. He paid him 500.00 a week with the title of Policy Consultant. And the jobs for silence for her husband etc.
He has the affair with the wife of one of his staff. How did he keep up the pretense?
The question now is the same one regarding the GOP. Hypocrisy. Ensign is now waiting to see how much flack he will take. And whether he can wait it out in regards to his party and calls for his resignation. He should have resigned right away last week as he said he would.
If he leaves, he will go to work as a lobbyist for someone on K Street. Just watch.
