Rep. Neugebauer: ‘I Don’t Know’ If Obama Is A Citizen

Rep. Bill Posey’s (R-FL) bill aimed at casting doubt over the citizenship status of President Obama appears to be gaining momentum within the Republican Party. The bill would require candidates for President to supply their birth certificates to the Federal Elections Commission to be eligible to run. Placating fringe elements of the right-wing movement who refuse to believe that President Obama was born in America, Posey himself has refused to say if he believes that the President was born in Hawaii.

Though initially it appeared he had little support, Posey eventually gained Rep. John Culberson (R-TX), Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-VA), and Rep. John Carter (R-TX) as cosponsors. Last week, Rep. John Campbell (R-CA) also signed on as a sponsor of the bill, while Sen. Tom Coburn (R-OK) said that he would support the bill if it reaches the Senate.

Speaking to the Texas-based Chad Hasty radio show yesterday, Neugebauer explained his support for the “birther” movement:

Q: So you believe the President is a US citizen?

NEUGEBAUER: You know I don’t know. I’ve never seen him produce documents that would say one way or another.

Listen here:

Of course, Obama was born in America and his birth certificate is widely available on the Internet. In response to an avalanche of conspiracy theories fabricated largely by Fox News and various right-wing media outlets, FactCheck.org has extensively researched the issue and provided Obama’s birth announcement in the Honolulu Advertiser, a copy of the certificate with a raised seal, and the stamp of Hawaii state registrar Alvin T. Onaka.

But the truth has not deterred radicals like Posey and Neugebauer from attempting to cast Obama as some sort of illegitimate foreigner. World Net Daily, a conservative site highly supportive of Posey’s efforts, has begun fund raising to place billboards around the country questioning Obama’s citizenship.

Posey claims other congressmen have wished him “good luck” with his legislation, but have yet to sign on.

Don’t these idiot Repubs have anything better to do with their time!!! If these bill for some reason passes….it will so laughable that President Obama will put the veto pen to it!! Then I have to say, when Texas secedes from the United States, will John Culberson (R-TX), Rep. Randy Neugebauer (R-TX), Rep. Robert Goodlatte (R-VA), and Rep. John Carter (R-TX) resign from the Congress?

  8. pasnell says:

If we are going to look at birth documents….lets look at JOHN McCAIN’s…….oh they voted to excuse McCain not being born in USA!

Did this clown vote for that bill to overlook McCain’s Panama Birth certificate????

    WOW

Even by TP backwash-bloggin’ standards, it is a pretty long stretch to say this “not an American citizen” meme is “gaining momentum within the Republican Party.”

I accept that this is no longer the blog to come and get information and dialog about salient issues, but sensationalism and fearmongering like this just lowers TP to the level of faux news and the rest of the msm.

  16. BlueShark says:

…Pretty amazing that the conspiracy goes all the way back to 1961 and was so clever that someone actually prepared a Honolulu Advertiser Birth Announcement for Barack Obama on the 1-in-a-gazillion chance that 48 years later he would be elected president.

    …Man…Now that is foresight.

They ‘feel’ that Obama wasn’t born in Hawaii, even though all available evidence points to this conclusion. It is amazing that they have the cojones to suggest that the left is interested in feelings, not facts, when almost every singular argument they make provides shabby facts and a huge leap of faith.

There is no law in place to prove citizenship, which is what freethinking man was saying. Of course it is already a law that the president be born in the United States, but why not have a verification process through the federal election committee?

To be eligible to run for the office of President, one must, by the US Constitution, be able to show they are a natural born citizen.

Either that or they were foreign born prior to 1776.

Article 2, Section 1 of the Constitution: No person except a natural born Citizen, or a Citizen of the United States, at the time of the Adoption of this Constitution, shall be eligible to the Office of President; neither shall any Person be eligible to that Office who shall not have attained to the Age of thirty-five Years, and been fourteen Years a Resident within the United States.

To be eligible to run for the office of President, one must, by the US Constitution, be able to show they are a natural born citizen.

Either that or they were foreign born prior to 1776.

And how is this proven? I am saying that there should be a process for which it is done. A law is not worth much if it is not enforced, which is why there should be a verification process through the federal elections commission.

Actually thye never verified it, they simply threw out the case. There was no verification of his citizenship. I say this fully believing that he is a citizen, but believe there should be a standard governing body that verifies citizenship of candidates.

This view was rejected by the state authorities, the media and independent factchecking organizations. FactCheck.org was invited to view the Obama campaign’s hard copy of the candidate’s Certification of Live Birth and concluded:

[I]t meets all of the requirements from the State Department for proving U.S. citizenship. Claims that the document lacks a raised seal or a signature are false. We have posted high-resolution photographs of the document as “supporting documents” to this article. Our conclusion: Obama was born in the U.S.A. just as he has always said.[14

I thought bureaucracy was bad? Now here you and “conservatives” want to add more. It’s perplexing, especially since it’s a solution in search of a problem. We’ve managed to get along without it since 1789 and it only turned out to be an issue when the Black man got elected. Funny thing about that.

You either a) don’t doubt the validity of Obama’s eligibility to serve and are simply seeking to eliminate any confusion in the future,

    b) you DO doubt the authenticity of the President’s birth certificate, despite its verification by numerous independent agencies, and need to have a government agency confirm it before you’ll believe it. IF you’ll ever believe it, that is.

Then he proved it by supplying a copy of his birth certificate and it was confirmed by Hawaiian officials to, amng others, the SCOTUS.

I’m only surprised that Karl Rove didn’t get the Republican rubberstamping Congress to approve this when Bush had control of Congress and the FEC. 115. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

And on to McCain. McCain was born in Panama to American parents. So people say that automatically makes him a US citizen (but not Obama for some reason). Anyway, the law that was passed making children of US citizens born outside the US automatically citizens was passed four years after John McCain was born. And the law WAS NOT RETROACTIVE. So, when you get right down to it, McCain was the one not eligible to run for President.

  116. wiley says:

According to the U.S. Constitution the President must be a “natural born” U.S. citizen, which is an undefined concept. You could argue that being born to an American citizen is “natural born”. Or you could argue that one would have to be born on U.S. soil, which would mean that McCain isn’t eligible either, because he was born in Panama. By that logic, anyone born to two American born parents would not be eligible for the presidency if they worn overseas for any reason. Pretty stupid and arbitrary. Kind of animistic.

Exactly. We should demand Rep. Randy Neugebauer’s birth certificate — the original certificate — and then if he produces it, promptly declare it to be a forgery. Then start a blog whispering campaign that suggests Neugebauer is a member of a terrorist sleeper cell that will ultimately bring down our government.

  135. Mark701 says:

It’s amazing how the trolls love to overlook the obvious. Let’s look at this nonsense about Obama not being an American citizen.

The United States spends about 100 billion annually on three major intelligence and law enforcement agencies, the CIA, FBI and NSA. One would think that if Obama’s birth certificate was phony and he was born in another country at least one of those agencies would have figured it out during the elections and released the information, especially in light of the fact that Republicans turned it into an issue. It didn’t happen because Obama’s birth certificate is legitimate (and don’t think for one second that these agencies didn’t check it out). To rational and sane people that should alleviate any concerns about Obama’s citizenship.

However, as we all know, many conservatives are not driven by rationality or common sense, rather by anger, fear, xenophobia, bigotry and hatred anyone or anything that refuses to accept their twisted view of reality. On their own these people would be of no concern. However, when their fear, ignorance and suspicion are amplified and legitimized by main stream media outlets like FOX “News” it becomes a problem.

Make no mistake, that the inability of progressives and conservative to speak to each other is largely the result of crazies like Limbaugh, Beck, Hannity, Savage and a host of other self serving entertainers who make hundreds of millions of dollars off their viewers fear and loathing. It is a crystal clear example of how corporate backed cronies destroy the discourse that is necessary for democracy to function, and these corporations could give a rats ass as long as they are pulling in the bucks. Welcome to America 2009.

The “Birther movement” is the Right’s political invention designed to propagandize the so-called “foreignness” of President Obama.

Republicans don’t really care about this bill – they know it will never become law. Its purpose is to bear fruit later – that is, to spin a tale that makes racism and xenophobia taste good without all those nasty calories. Racism Lite.

The Right wants to make race a campaign issue in the next Presidential election but they can not afford to be seen as overtly racist. So, they are trying to move the chess pieces now so that race by another name (”He’s foreign!”) can be an issue in the next Presidential election under the disguise of an innocent and wholesome pride in our uniquely American respect for law and order, i.e., our Constitution.

It will be racism disguised as law and order, disguised as nativism (which the Right I guess sees as palatable to its constituency and morally OK to them), disguised as the aw shucks innocence of a 5 year old child. Its message will be “we are innocent, pure, wholesome, law-abiding American godliness. They are foreign devils who lie.”
