Sen. Gregg, who names his earmarks after himself, says stimulus construction signs are ‘political self-interest.’

Sen. Judd Gregg (R-NH) has introduced a bill “that would prohibit the use of stimulus funds for signs that say a project is being carried out using those funds.” Gregg says his “Axe The Stimulus Plaques Act” is necessary because stimulus construction signs “are simply for political self-interest.” But while Gregg seems intent on concealing the source of funding for infrastructure and other construction projects made possible by the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, Gregg had no objections to slapping his own name to projects he earmarked for New Hampshire:

– Gregg earmarked $500,000 in federal money to Plymouth State University for the “Judd Gregg Meteorology Institute.”

– “Gregg Hall” at the University of New Hampshire was dedicated after Gregg secured $266 million in federal funds for the university.

– “The Judd Gregg Library” was dedicated after Gregg secured $150,000 for the Nasua Policy Athletic League.

The Center for Responsive Politics has also reported that Gregg helped funnel $66 million in earmarks to help create a business park where Gregg and his brother own up to $1,050,000 in real estate ventures. Given the obvious conflict of interest of that earmark and his own penchant for naming earmark-funded buildings after himself, Gregg’s crusade against stimulus signs might seem a bit trivial.

    Names earmarks after himself?

There are no depths to the hypocrisy of those identifying themselves with an (R) behind their names.

    ____________________________________________________________

Translation: Gregg’s “Axe the Stimulus Plaques Act” is necessary because stimulus construction signs would let taxpayers see that their money is not only going to job creation, but to building worthwhile things that will be of actual use to them, essentially removing the “wasteful Washington spending” meme from the GOP playbook for the 2010 elections.

I always thought it was bad luck to name stuff after yourself if you are still alive. Also if you do get stuff named after yourself it should be because you used your own money to build it.

How bipartsan of Sen. Gregg to attack something that doesn’t have his name on it. Its sounds so bipolar and fits perectly with the mental condition more commonly known as being a Republican. Will the real Sen. Gregg please stand up and identify themselves? Probably not.

  25. pastcaring says:

Duh! It is easy to do. All we do is repeat the lies of the wingnuts and it smears them. What a bunch of hypocritical dolts they have in the GOP. How did that free market work out for you wingnuts? Wall Street was bailed out by Bush and Paulson before Obama was elected, much less took office. Bush announced that he was not going to act the auto industry because he wanted to leave it to the new administration. The wingnuts were in power most of the past eight years and screwed up everything with free market, hands off, deregulated economics. Read a bood.

O/T: President Obana has given the cool and proper responses to Iran. Now, if he and we can just apply this same idea of allowing freedom to choose ones rulers to the American-occupied nations of Afghanistan and Iraq. We need to withdraw out armed forces and our mercenaries and let the Afghanis and Iraqis make their own decisions.

  36. fletc3her says:

The Republicans fight the signs which identify what tax money is being used to fund projects here in Washington State too. I guess letting the voters know that their money is actually going to build stuff that we can all use is antithetical to the lies of Republican spin machine.

There is no end to the hypocrisy of repugs.
They really think their farts don’t stink.

As for the signs at construction sites indicating it is a Recovery Project — when I first saw it, I thought what a good idea! People will see the stimulus money in action.
They don’t have Obama’s name on them – even if they did – so what?
Also, somebody has a job making those signs.

What have we got to show for the squandering of the surplus that Bush lost? What have we got to show for the war in Iraq?
We have a broken economy, and broken families mourning the dead.
    STFU, Gregg.

  41. majii says:

Gregg and Sanford are benefitting from the stimulus $. Gregg as stated in this article, and Sanford because part of the stimulus will be used to improve the Appalachian Trail. I’m a firm believer that if you don’t know something/enough about a topic, either ask questions in an effort to learn about it or sitdown and shut up.

  42. Bluestocking says:

“After I’m dead, I’d rather have people ask why I have no monument than why I have one.” — Cato The Elder

Gregg, it would appear, could stand to learn a thing or two from that great Roman statesman. Sixty years or so from now — provided that they’re still standing — I don’t imagine that very many of the students at Plymouth State University or the University of New Hampshire will remember anything about Judd Gregg apart from the fact that Gregg Hall and the Judd Gregg Meteorological Institute are named after him.

  43. Bluestocking says:

I meant to say “provided that Gregg Hall and the Judd Gregg Meteorological Institute are still standing” — not “provided that Plymouth State and the University of New Hampshire are still standing”…

Although, considering the turbulent and rather uncertain times in which we now live…who knows? I’m sure that if you asked the people of 1949 whether much of what we see today could ever happen, they’d find it very hard to believe.

  44. 1stGenAm says:

It was no surprise to those of us who live in NH that Gregg decided not to run again. He must be reading the polls. This is no longer a red state. Our state government is blue and, when we elect another Democrat to join Sen. Shaheen, all of our congress people will be Democratic. We are the Live Free or Die state. Republican ideology and hypocrisy have no place here.

Gregg doesn’t want the signs because he is a partisan hack and a fool. He doesn’t want the President or the Democratic legislators who passed the stimulus to get any credit for any progress. He and his snarky colleagues were chirping about the effect Obama’s election on the stock market back in Jan/Feb. Now that we have seen 3 straight months of slow but steady growth, not one peep from any one of them. What they’ve done for years, the last 8 in particular, is show anyone who doesn’t have blinders on is that they are the party of spend, spend, spend. They never included the wars in their budgets and put the cost on tabs held by China and Japan. (Hint: Ever wonder why China suffers no consequences for shipping us their toxic products?) Yeah, and “no new taxes”, indeed. Guess that only applies to the rich. Continue the Bush tax cuts my butt!!

Gregg and his buddies just don’t get it. They don’t understand that we stopped listening to the admonition “pay no attention to the man behind the curtain” while they preach about “big government”. We’ve figured out that its what conservatives and neo-cons say while they ignore regulations or deregulate so that they can fill their pockets and the pockets of their supporters – with cash from everyday, hard working Americans. The day when they can stir the masses with buzz words and fear to get those who don’t look at the man behind the curtain to support policies and laws that are against their own best interests are coming to an end. We need the balance of the two functioning parties. Unless they want to go the way of the Whigs, they’d better start paying attention.
