Obama questions legitimacy of Iranian elections, says it is ‘up to the Iranian people to decide’ their leadership.

At this afternoon’s press conference, President Obama called on Huffington Post national editor (and TP alum) Nico Pitney, who has been aggregating and reporting valuable information coming out of Iran. Earlier today, Nico told his readers, “If I get called, I want to ask a question that comes directly from an Iranian.” Obama prompted Nico’s question, saying, “I know there may actually be questions from people in Iran who are communicating through the Internet. Do you have a question?” Nico posed this query from an Iranian to the President:

PITNEY: Under which conditions would you accept the election of Ahmadinejad? And if you do accept it without any significant changes in the conditions there, isn’t that a betrayal of — of what the demonstrators there are working to achieve?

Obama responded that there are “significant questions about the legitimacy of the election.” He added:

OBAMA: Ultimately, the most important thing for the Iranian government to consider is legitimacy in the eyes of its own people, not in the eyes of the United States. And that’s why I’ve been very clear, ultimately, this is up to the Iranian people to decide who their leadership is going to be and the structure of their government.

Watch it:

Transcript:

OBAMA: Since we’re on Iran, I know Nico Pitney is here from the Huffington Post.

QUESTION: Thank you, Mr. President.

OBAMA: Nico, I know that you and all across the Internet, we’ve been seeing a lot of reports coming directly out of Iran. I know that there may actually be questions from people in Iran who are communicating through the Internet. Do you have a question?

QUESTION: Yes, I did, but I wanted to use this opportunity to ask you a question directly from an Iranian. We solicited questions on tonight from people who are still courageous enough to be communicating online. And one of them wanted to ask you this: Under which conditions would you accept the election of Ahmadinejad? And if you do accept it without any significant changes in the conditions there, isn’t that a betrayal of — of what the demonstrators there are working to achieve?

OBAMA: Well, look, we didn’t have international observers on the ground. We can’t say definitively what exactly happened at polling places throughout the country.

What we know is that a sizable percentage of the Iranian people themselves, spanning Iranian society, consider this election illegitimate. It’s not an isolated instance, a little grumbling here or there. There is significant questions about the legitimacy of the election.

And so, ultimately, the most important thing for the Iranian government to consider is legitimacy in the eyes of its own people, not in the eyes of the United States.

And that’s why I’ve been very clear, ultimately, this is up to the Iranian people to decide who their leadership is going to be and the structure of their government.

What we can do is to say, unequivocally, that there are sets of international norms and principles about violence, about dealing with the peaceful dissent, that — that spans cultures, spans borders.

And what we’ve been seeing over the Internet and what we’ve been seeing in news reports violates those norms and violates those principles.

I think it is not too late for the Iranian government to recognize that — that there is a peaceful path that will lead to stability and legitimacy and prosperity for the Iranian people. We hope they take it.

Update Politico’s Michael Calderone complains that “reporters typically don’t coordinate their questions for the president before press conferences, so it seemed odd that Obama might have an idea what the question would be.” White House spokesman Bill Burton acknowledges, “We did reach out to [Nico] prior to press conference to tell him that we had been paying attention to what he had been doing on Iran and there was a chance that he’d be called on.”
Update White House officials tell Greg Sargent that they did not know what Nico’s question would be.

In other words, it’s not up to Obama to “accept” the election results.

  2. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

That statement won’t be good enough for McCain and Graham. Anything short of threatening to invade Iran will never be enough. But, for anyone who isn’t a warmonger, President Obama’s words were a perfect blend of respecting Iran’s sovereignty and supporting the people of Iran who have the courage to protest the election.

I hope that the people in this country are learning from the people of Iran and might learn to stand up for what we think is right. I know that there is a movement afoot to start rallies around health care reform. I will be attending a rally Wednesday afternoon in Corvallis organized by my Unitarian Church. Hopefully people across this country will get out in numbers too big to ignore to have our say about reforming our broken health care system.

And as a result you get what? The Iranian people will still not be able to elect a new leader (he has to be confirmed by the Ayatollah). The government of Iran will not change. And we will be seen once again as meddling in the government of another country. Besides, every political party in Iraq originated in Iran. When the election results in Iran were announced, President Jalal Talabani called to congratulate Ahmadinejad. So, essentially, all OIF did was make Iran tremendously stronger and give it a huge ally in the region.

I have no problem with reporters being “hard” on the President at a presser. That should be the role of a responsible press. And this President is up to the task as he demonstrated today.

I agree that the press seldom was as hard on GDumbya. However, I think that’s because they didn’t want to watch him melt down in front of the American people. We all knew that we had a dolt in the Oval Office for those eight years but we really didn’t want to be reminded of it in such a graphic way.

Eh — cut the troll a little slack. They don’t have much these days, so they’re trying to dress up what they’ve got as best they can.

This is a typical wingnut trick — when you can’t bash what President Obama says, find a shiny object and divert attention toward that. Even if you have to make one up.

In this case, Politico is trying to claim that Nico Pitney’s question was a carefully choreographed event, and implying this is scandalous. Of course, their speculation is based on Pitney’s question looking like it could be a setup.

Step two of this process is to get a troll (this is JohnM’s role) to trot this blog raving off to a progressive site like TP — claiming that we might find such blather “interesting”. Not only is it not interesting, but it doesn’t discredit President Obama’s words (which is what it’s trying to do).

Me? I really don’t care if Obama calling on Nico Pitney was truly spontaneous, or if it was as planned as a shuttle launch. The story here is what Obama said about the Iran elections, not who asked him the question or how it was asked.

Through Nico Pitney, the President is talking directly to the Iranian people.

    http://www.politico.com/blogs/michaelcalderone/0609/Obama_calls_on_HuffPost_for_Iran_question.html

Someone who is more concerned with who asked the questions or the potential that Obama may have already spoken to him about getting asked a question than they are with the content of the answer has no right to be considered even remotely credible.

Unlike others here, I found that article fascinating. I found the comments stunning (and I loved how most of the comments that people were responding nastily to weren’t there anymore….damn those scrubbers). I was unaware at the depths to which people will go to smear the President. Sometimes it’s warranted, sometimes its expected, hell sometimes it’s even acceptable. But it is incomprehensible that someone could find fault with the answering of a question that has nothing whatsoever to do with the actual response given.

You need to work on the English language comprehension skills.

“Ask questions” is not the same as “discuss the questions.”

    Seriously.

And you still haven’t explained why anyone would give a damn, even if they had discussed the question(s).

Why do we care if the question was staged or not?
It was a question that needed answering.

I don’t think we should be giving style points for being able to wing it.
What’s much more important is communicating the position.

    Which is spot on.

He ignored it when I said it to. The reality is that how the question was posed really doesn’t mean dick. The content of the answer is the important part. That’s why the Politico article is irrelevant, that’s why JohnM is irrelevant. I know the devil’s in the details, but we’re about thisclose to someone criticizing Obama for having a fly-away hair on a windy day.

  132. Shellly says:

the president wanted to hear a specific question that none of the major networks would ask…. Sometimes you don’t get to ask a specific question, because someone else has asked it.

this morning on CNN, Kiran Chetry played a recording of an iranian citizen and asked Robert Gibbs to comment, so i think they are well aware of what is going on… and maybe the president wanted to answer that particularly question directly.

  133. backup says:

The well-known right-wing rigidity must really come in handy for JohnM.

ralph. It doesn’t surprise me that liberals and conservatives think differently.

Liberals or progressives seem to want, and are more open to, change, while conservatives seem to be more comfortable with the status quo.

If all change is good, the generalization that the liberal mindset is somehow more appropriate or evolved, would be compelling.

But, is that the assumption? That any and all change is better than the status quo?

  134. Buckie Boy says:

It’s so nice to have an intelligent president for a change.

Could you imagine the mess this would have become with McCain and Palin?

We are sooooo lucky that the magine was soooo wide that the GNOP could not steal another election.

  135. Marie says:

Pitney has been blogging on Iraq for two weeks – does Calderone think Obama wouldn’t have a clue on the nature of a question he would ask? With the coverage from Iraq coming from twitter and blogs, doesn’t it seem logical to ask one of our own?
The sneering and sniffing that goes on among the so-called journalists of today is further proof that their personal attitudes, coupled with the general tone of the media as a whole, is contributing to their becoming irrerlevant.

  136. smidget says:

    @backup

Your question is fair and reasoned. The answer is – there is no answer. Sometimes yes, and sometimes no (see, there’s that liberal flip-floppy-ness that the cons can’t stand….actually it’s because there is no black and white answer).

Conservatives and progressives are polar opposites. True conservatism advocates, literally, for there to be no change. True progressives say that since things have to change, we should change with it. Both are reasonable when applied to certain situations. When the way to freedom and personal liberty means changing, then it change is good. When change equals oppression and the regression of society, then it is not good. To determine whether “new and shiny” or “tried and true” is the best option, one must first know the details of the situation.

  137. Doodlebug Shayne says:

First President Obama should send in troops to arrest Bush, Cheney, Rove and all the other crooks who stole the 2000 election and then skewed the 2004 election. It is not his job to fix elections in Iran.

  141. backup says:

    No.

Good. We are on the same page. Both schools of thought serve a purpose.

Progressives push for change. Conservatives champion the status quo. Hopefully, progressives will make headway on issues that need change and conservatives will successfully defend those areas of the status quo that benefit society.

Sorry, I did not see your post. I think the answer to your question is how upset people are here about the possibility that it was staged. People here obviously care, otherwise they would not be so set on trying to prove denounce the possibility.

Personally, I don’t care if it was staged or not. I actually agree with Obama on his stance with Iran. I just think it is interesting that people are so unwilling to believe that he would do this, especially when Bush would get so much flak for doing same thing. It is strange that the whitehouse reached out to this reporter before the press conference and it did seem to be staged during the press conference. The fact remains the left was very critical of Bush staging answers and Obama must be held to the same standard.

    JohnM

It wasn’t my question, John. I repeated it for the 88th time on this thread. Pretending you didn’t see it doesn’t cover you. I don’t know why it would take you so long to answer such a simple question with such a ridiculous answer, but it did.

YOU are the one that posted the conspiracy-to-answer bullshit. YOU are the one that has been keeping the idiocy going on this thread. The people who are here that care whether or not something so stupid is being spread around are, for the most part, appalled at how vapid people have to be to 1) buy this garbage, and 2) give a shit.

I’m glad you agree with Obama on his stance on Iran. So what’s your excuse for going out of your way to propagate the moronic rumors you find on Politico?
