House Minority Leader John Boehner (R-OH), an avid lover of golf, has repeatedly used the golf course for fundraising purposes. Unlike the imprisoned former lobbyist Jack Abramoff, who famously used golf as “bait…to lure Republican politicians into his realm,” Boehner has repeatedly used golf as a means of giving lobbyists some face-time with him while raising money for House Republicans in the process. The Washington Post’s Mary Ann Akers reports today that Boehner’s PAC, Freedom Project, “spent a total of $31,474.11 on a golf fundraiser for friends, lobbyists and anyone else who wanted intimate tee time with the House’s top Republican” at the Ritz Carlton in Naples, FL last February, raising nearly a quarter million dollars for GOP candidates.
Shocker.
Not.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:01 pmExactly how is this not bribery?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:02 pm“intimate T time”?????
WFT
Isn’t that what larry craig was looking doing his toe-tap, wide-stance routine on the TTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTToilet?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:04 pmSo if you’re a Republican, and you send some money to this PAC to help get Republicans elected, they spend it taking lobbyists out to golf? Man, I’d be pissed.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:04 pmAh, the republican affinity for ‘clubs and balls….’
..and holes…
Wonder if they had tea afterwards?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:06 pmfreemarket – this post is about the minority leader. I don’t like to see them cover the trivial here either, but this guy and what he does is actually newsworthy.
Can’t you save you post for when they start frontpaging obscure bridge parties that want to start a revolution over “obamacare”?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:06 pmelbruce – legit point, that is, if repubs actually had any significant support beyond the special interest groups and the wealthy that they represent.
To them, giving is just a tax write off that pays many dividends in perks.
I wonder if they play “dick out” when they golf?

June 24th, 2009 at 1:26 pmC’mon, it’s only 30 thou +. You can’t buy an anti public plan with that measly amount. You’d need at least ten times that, from big pharma and the big uninsurers. Boner?
June 24th, 2009 at 1:26 pmBoehner used his wood on the first hole. (snicker…)
June 24th, 2009 at 1:27 pmIOKIYAR
June 24th, 2009 at 1:28 pmWell, having worked in the professional world for many years, golf is an extremely common (and effective) means for networking, talking to clients, constituents, etc., with some level of privacy. I’ve got no problem with Boehner or any other politician taking to the links to do business there. Thirty thousand dollars is a lot of money, but it wouldn’t be too out of the ordinary depending upon the number of people attending. All those green fees, golf carts, catering and so forth, ya know.

June 24th, 2009 at 1:32 pmOnly $1,474 was for greens fees. The hooker parties afterward cost $30,000.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:32 pmHe’ll have to drop out of the race when it becomes known that the is part of a terrorist cell known as Free Republic.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:34 pmGee, guess that proves that Boner comes by his tan “naturally” by spending more time on the golf course than he does on the floor of the Senate–maybe the Guv’mnt could install some tanning beds to lure him back to the Capitol??
June 24th, 2009 at 1:38 pmAny idea what the attention seeking troll is babbling on about???
June 24th, 2009 at 1:38 pmOK, the PAC spends over $30K to entertain lobbyists and the lobbyists pony up about $225K in return. The PAC probably considers getting over 7 times ROI to be a good thing — and from an investment angle, it is.
So why do we care? I mean, other than those of us with middle-class values blanching at the wads of money being casually tossed around?
We care because those lobbyists are going to expect more bang for their bucks than just a simple golf game (if it was just the golf game, that merely makes Boehner a high-priced whore who charges by the hour).
We have seen the effects of special interests buying our officials. This is why we cannot get any kind of sensible climate change/energy conservation/alternative energy development plans off the ground — because our elected officials are bought and paid for by the oil and coal people. This is why we’re arguing over what should be a no-brainer health care situation — because our elected officials are bought and paid for by the private health insurance industry and big pharma.
And on top of all that, Boehner probably didn’t even pay for his own golf game himself.
June 24th, 2009 at 1:38 pmAs a true right-wing Republican insurgent, FreeMarketLiberal will only support corrupt politicians. Like any criminal organization, the GOP requires that you prove yourself to be a criminal in order to be accepted. Republicans will not trust anyone who is honest.

oh, wait… here’s a story out of minnesota.
long time party member quits!
he writes:
“After years of ineffective party leadership resulting in a record number of defeats, lack of transparency in party dealings, alleged financial impropriety by former party employees, and numerous Federal Election Commission problems, can you really blame the electorate for abandoning the Minnesota GOP?
On June 13, the party continued its death spiral by electing the same failed leadership that has lost the last two elections. The “old guard” network of the GOP State Central Delegates continued to imitate lemmings gleefully following each other over the cliff to the political abyss below. [...]
In my opinion, the new party leaders are rabid, power-hungry ideologues and the former attack dogs of the previous party chairman. They will not provide a message of inclusiveness or willingness to discuss contrary opinions. Honest, open and transparent party operations will not exist.”

We’d have to find out what his going rates are. Right now, all we know is that it costs almost a quarter of a million dollars to play golf with him. Heaven only knows what it costs for actual legislation.
Maybe there’s a price schedule his staff could fax out?
June 24th, 2009 at 2:57 pmjoe, 57, thanks for that MN link. The good Colonel came to his senses, apparently.
Unfortunately, the Bachmann virus is still contagious.
Our Gov. here, unlike Sanford, refuses to go away, even though we asked him nicely. I’m sure he found the Sanford Sex story delightful…it’s one less competitor in ‘12.

What really takes balls is such blatantly elitist cash-swapping with K Street in the post-Abramoff era. Wherever he found ‘em, they’re pretty damn big.
June 24th, 2009 at 3:42 pmThis sort of blatant partisan expenditure is completely acceptable to Repugnants; however, if the President takes his wife on a date, they scream about what that might cost. Total hypocrites, those Repubs.
June 24th, 2009 at 4:43 pmOf course, Bonehead does not realize that there are many families that have to live a year on that kind of money or less.
June 24th, 2009 at 6:35 pmZooey Says:
“Exactly how is this not bribery?”
It’s bribery and extortion on a merry-go-round, each feeding on the other. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the prey from the hunter. It’s where lobbyists learn that so-in-so will vote for their great ideas if only they had more money to get elected. It’s where congressmen learn that they’ll find some instant donors if only they felt the same way the donors did about such-and-such. It’s where a congressman can discover that…if he’s having financial problems in his personal life…he can get instant solutions down there at the Old Country Club Bar & Grill. Talk to a guy named Frank in a blue fedora.
And everybody just wants to be friends. What’s wrong with that? You’re not a socialist or something are you?
