It’s bribery and extortion on a merry-go-round, each feeding on the other. Sometimes it’s hard to tell the prey from the hunter. It’s where lobbyists learn that so-in-so will vote for their great ideas if only they had more money to get elected. It’s where congressmen learn that they’ll find some instant donors if only they felt the same way the donors did about such-and-such. It’s where a congressman can discover that…if he’s having financial problems in his personal life…he can get instant solutions down there at the Old Country Club Bar & Grill. Talk to a guy named Frank in a blue fedora.

And everybody just wants to be friends. What’s wrong with that? You’re not a socialist or something are you?

What really takes balls is such blatantly elitist cash-swapping with K Street in the post-Abramoff era. Wherever he found ‘em, they’re pretty damn big.

We’d have to find out what his going rates are. Right now, all we know is that it costs almost a quarter of a million dollars to play golf with him. Heaven only knows what it costs for actual legislation.
