Soon after Gov. Mark Sanford (R-SC) admitted that he had lied to his staff and flown to Argentina for a rendezvous with his mistress, ThinkProgress Editor-in-Chief Faiz Shakir discussed Sanford’s political fortunes on MSNBC. Faiz pointed out that Sanford’s affair is hardly his worst sin:
I don’t want him to resign because of the affair. I think he should get kicked out of office because he’s been a terrible governor for the state. Their unemployment rate is at its highest rate ever. He’s bankrupted the state. He’s been fighting the Obama administration over unemployment money that his constituents desperately need. So I think on the merits, he’s been a horrible governor.
Faiz also reminded hosts David Shuster and Tamron Hall of Sanford’s own characterization of lying as “the biggest harm…to the democratic system.” Watch it:
After the segment, Hall said Faiz “made a great point” about Sanford’s past statements. “When people can use your own words, and you’ve criticized people in that same position, that bites I think more than anything any other critic or analyst can say about you,” Hall said.

June 24th, 2009 at 5:23 pmHere is his Wife’s Statement:
Jenny’s statement: A trial separation, and a second chanceSouth Carolina first lady Jenny Sanford — a force in the state’s politics and in her husband’s career — just put out a statement in which she says she asked her husband to leave two weeks ago, but that she is giving him a chance to “resurrect” their marriage:
I would like to start by saying I love my husband and I believe I have put forth every effort possible to be the best wife I can be during our almost twenty years of marriage. As well, for the last fifteen years my husband has been fully engaged in public service to the citizens and taxpayers of this state and I have faithfully supported him in those efforts to the best of my ability. I have been and remain proud of his accomplishments and his service to this state.
I personally believe that the greatest legacy I will leave behind in this world is not the job I held on Wall Street, or the campaigns I managed for Mark, or the work I have done as First Lady or even the philanthropic activities in which I have been routinely engaged. Instead, the greatest legacy I will leave in this world is the character of the children I, or we, leave behind. It is for that reason that I deeply regret the recent actions of my husband Mark, and their potential damage to our children.
I believe wholeheartedly in the sanctity, dignity and importance of the institution of marriage. I believe that has been consistently reflected in my actions. When I found out about my husband’s infidelity I worked immediately to first seek reconciliation through forgiveness, and then to work diligently to repair our marriage. We reached a point where I felt it was important to look my sons in the eyes and maintain my dignity, self-respect, and my basic sense of right and wrong. I therefore asked my husband to leave two weeks ago.
This trial separation was agreed to with the goal of ultimately strengthening our marriage. During this short separation it was agreed that Mark would not contact us. I kept this separation quiet out of respect of his public office and reputation, and in hopes of keeping our children from just this type of public exposure. Because of this separation, I did not know where he was in the past week.
I believe enduring love is primarily a commitment and an act of will, and for a marriage to be successful, that commitment must be reciprocal. I believe Mark has earned a chance to resurrect our marriage.
Psalm 127 states that sons are a gift from the Lord and children a reward from Him. I will continue to pour my energy into raising our sons to be honorable young men. I remain willing to forgive Mark completely for his indiscretions and to welcome him back, in time, if he continues to work toward reconciliation with a true spirit of humility and repentance.
This is a very painful time for us and I would humbly request now that members of the media respect the privacy of my boys and me as we struggle together to continue on with our lives and as I seek the wisdom of Solomon, the strength and patience of Job and the grace of God in helping to heal my family.

TP apparently doesn’t have Iranian sources and we, as a nation, can’t really do much because we don’t even have a semblance of “normal” relations with Iran. All we can really do is watch and wait.
On the other hand. A U.S. Governor disappearing to meet his illicit mistress, leaving his state without an acting Governor, is a pretty big story. Especially when said Governor is supposed to be an up and coming GOP player.
Of course. The Reichwhiners have always seemed to have an odd blindness to the failings of various GOoPers. Even when their failings amount to dereliction of duty.

Now I know he is an expert on being a repug hypocrite that spends public moneys on his mistress to book, but how does he become an “expert” on the dems too?
Giuliani: Democrats cheat as often as Republicans
Former New York mayor and presidential candidate Rudy Giuliani offered a roundabout defense of disgraced Republican South Carolina Governor Mark Sanford — and Republicans as a whole — on Fox News Wednesday.
“This has happened just as often in the Democratic Party,” Giuliani told Fox’s Neil Cavuto. “These problems of romance, sexuality, et cetera, are not confined to Republicans or Democrats or independents.”
June 24th, 2009 at 5:48 pmThe more I hear about Gov. Sanford and his wife: the smugness of their religious biases and personal political history notwithstanding, the more I want to go to Argentina and start crying for the rest of the country. Good riddance to the whole funky bunch of hypocrites we now see parading across our TV screens. Hopefully now a mental health component will come with the public option ’cause Lord knows we’ll all need counseling to make sense of these duplicitous evangelical phonies.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:53 pm“This has happened just as often in the Democratic Party,” Giuliani told Fox’s Neil Cavuto.
Oh yeah, Trudy? Please give us a list of Democrats who ditched their families over Fathers’ Day to have a last fling with their Argentinian mistresses. Or even a list of Democrats who disappeared for several days on the taxpayers’ dime. Or a list of Democrats who campaign on a ‘family values’ platform.
June 24th, 2009 at 5:54 pmHappy Father’s Day!
June 24th, 2009 at 5:54 pmI have always believed the a politician’s personal life, as long as it does not effect their ability to do their job, is not the public’s business.
That Sanford has been unable to separate the two, that he has placed his extra-marital affair before his duties as governor, is reason enough for him to resign.
If Sanford had half a brain (or did his thinking with something other than what was in his pants), he would have handed temporary control over to his lieutenant governor, gone on his “vacation,” and no one would have been the wiser.
Instead, his political career is over. His marriage is probably over. And if, as has been suggested, that he spent taxpayer money to visit his Argentinian mistress, he could be facing impeachment, as well as criminal charges.

Now, they will wait until the story is old and pick up on the meme that we need to leave the family along and what a great man sanford is to have admitted it.
Of course, this story is nowhere near over if someone will keep investigating – the “official line” still doesn’t pass the smell test.

June 24th, 2009 at 6:05 pmIt’s not a matter of the left picking on this man.. It is what it has always been a matter of HYPOCRISY. This is the second of theirs this week. And how many in the past three years. I mean the ministers and the politicians. And how they crucified Bill Bush for a blow job. And think of all the right wing who have admitted to affairs since Clinton. And still they call themselves the family values party.
So at a two week separation from his wife where he is supposed to get himself together and decide what he wants. So he spends his time not in real reflection but in Argentina.
If his wife goes to his side at a news conference while he explains it all, I will throw up. Why oh why do they all say and do the same thing? They beat their collectives breasts. They say they are sorry. They love their wives and their kids and they love their work. They love their state and they love God. And the wife stands there at his side and looks miserable and wants to drop through the floor with humiliation. If this mans wife stands by his side she is crazy. He ran off to his mistress at this latest opportunity. I would have told him to get out and he was on his own. An eight year affair. Can you imagine what the emails were like?
And he will be applauded by the GOP. The applause is gratitude for the affair being with a woman and not a man. To them adultery is ok, but being gay is not. Twisted thinking.
Let’s see just who or if they ask him to leave office. Don’t hold your breath.

**********************************************************
What “Third Time Lucky” Guiliani all too conveniently forgot to mention is the fact that the majority of Democrats don’t make a habit of either preaching to other people about the supposed importance of “taking personal responsibility” or of claiming to represent “family-Christian-traditional values”. Republicans do both, sometimes at the same time — and yet when they get caught with their britches down (literally or metaphorically), they’re just as prone as any other human being to rationalize their behavior instead of courageously accepting as their due the consequences of their behavior. All this proves is that it’s much easier to talk about one’s principles than it is to live up to them — but then again, as Mark Twain once said, “it is better to remain silent and be thought a fool than to speak and remove all doubt.”
In my opinion, this may be one of the reasons why Democrats don’t seem to bring up the subject of morals or ethics nearly as often as Republicans do — and when they do, are neither quite as strident nor as inclined to speak in absolute black-and-white terms. It’s not because they have no ethics, even though that’s what some Republicans would have people believe — I think it’s because they have a better understanding of the fact that nobody’s perfect and that it’s unwise (not to mention unfair) to condemn other people for not measuring up to a certain standard which you aren’t meeting yourself.

June 24th, 2009 at 8:25 pmThere’s the difference between acting like a goat and acting like a prince.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:27 pmBill Clinton got a blow job from someone at the office.
Eliot Spitzer hired a call girl.
But Sanford vanished for 5 days and expected his staff to actively run interference for him. He felt he could just take a flight to Argentina on the sly.
He expected to be shielded by his subordinates to an amazing degree.
That’s the arrogance of power, and it speaks volumes.
Democrats do this too, but this feeling that one’s subordinates are personally loyal flunkies who will facilitate whatever they want is something that goes a ways beyond just plain rutting and cheating.Bill Clinton always struck me as a guy who would just seduce the woman at the car-rental desk if there was no one else around.
Spitzer just struck me as the kind of guy just gets paralyzed the moment the right buttons are pushed.
But Sanford–he thought he was a prince with a retinue.
That goes more with a republican mind set.
“Or he was crying because his mistress didn’t have the “equipment” he really wanted.”
“Baby better come back, maybe next week, ’cause you see I’m on a losing streak”, he “can’t get no satisfaction.”

About the hypocrisy of closeted gay republicans.
June 24th, 2009 at 8:30 pmSomeone at Crooks And Liars made a very interesting and pertinent point earlier today. When the media made contact with Sanford’s wife over the weekend about her husband’s whereabouts, this is what she had to say:
“I am being a mom today. I have not heard from my husband. I am taking care of my children.“ (emphasis mine)
Hardly anyone in the mainstream media picked up on that particular choice of words — even though a clue suggesting that all was not well in the Sanford household was right under their noses the whole time. Granted, it’s not unusual to hear a woman use the word “my” rather than “our” when speaking of her children — but I think you have to admit that when a woman uses that particular pronoun when her husband is the topic of conversation, it’s usually not an accident and often indicates that she’s extremely upset with him. The fact that she didn’t seem to be terribly worried about him even though it was Father’s Day and nobody seemed to know where the father of her children had gone or why, well…that should have spoken volumes, but it didn’t. At the very least, it should have been enough for some reporter to make a connection and realize that on this one occasion, two plus two equaled three.

June 24th, 2009 at 8:42 pmI don’t have the wherewithal of dbadass to keep a list. Anyone feel up to it?
Oh, and to add to the current list:
He was crying because his “stimulus package” was lost at the airport.
June 24th, 2009 at 9:00 pmMarital infidelity by elected figures is only an issue when the politician makes “family values” and the “sanctity of marriage” a cornerstone of their political ideology. Nothing devalues a politician more than sanctimonious rhetoric once they have been caught with their pants down.
June 24th, 2009 at 9:01 pmre: Gov. Mark Sandord:
Weeellll, at least we now know why the Bush administration and Cheney’s office destroyed so many millions of e-mails…all those steamy, sexual Republican messages between top officials in the Bush administration.
I can just see them now….
No, no, no, the Republicans didn’t destroy all those e-mails because torture was discussed as well as how they could somehow paint legal lipstick on that torture pig, nor was there any discussion about stealing elections nor lying about going to war in Iraq nor authorizing illegal warrantless wiretaps nor using the NSA to spy on political enemies nor outing a covert CIA agent nor politicizing Hurricane Katrina (where the Bush administration sent federal disaster relief into Mississippi and Alabama because these two states had Republican governors, while at the same time the Bush administration deliberately withheld emergency federal aid from Louisiana and New Orleans, where elected Democrats were in charge)…it was all that sex, sex, sex in those destroyed White House messages…that was the sole thrust of many of those “family values” Bush administration communications. Yep! Yep!

Sanford e-mail to mistress: Situation ‘hopelessly impossible’
http://www.cnn.com/2009/POLITICS/06/24/south.carolina.governor.emails/
but there’s this:
(CNN) — South Carolina Gov. Mark Sanford told the woman with whom he was having an affair they were “in a hopelessly impossible situation of love” last year when he was thought to be under consideration for the Republican vice presidential nomination, according to e-mails obtained by The State newspaper.
The Columbia-based newspaper, which acquired the e-mails in December, told CNN that the governor’s office had confirmed their authenticity on Wednesday. When contacted by CNN, a spokesman for the governor would neither confirm nor deny the authenticity of the e-mails.
The e-mails between the GOP governor and a Buenos Aires, Argentina, resident named “Maria,” were exchanged in July of last year, according to the newspaper.

bastids knew about it for a looong time…
June 24th, 2009 at 11:41 pmFrom the article at The State which discloses the e-mail messages between Gov. Sanford and his Argentinian friend:
“The State has removed the woman’s full name and other personal details, including her address, e-mail address and children’s names…According to the doorman, the woman has two sons, one a teenager of driving age and the other younger.“
************************************************************
Did anyone else read this and wonder just how much younger the second son might be? The article doesn’t really provide any further information. Is it possible that the second son is Sanford’s child? The news reports state that he and this woman have known one another for eight years even though the affair only started a year ago. One time is sufficient to get a woman pregnant, after all, if the circumstances are right — and she could quite easily have been pregnant and given birth within the space of a year. It might explain why he chose to go down there during Father’s Day weekend — although the fact that his wife reportedly asked him to stay away from their family might have had something to do with it as well. Since that supposedly only happened a couple of weeks ago, it’s not impossible that this was one of the reasons why he claims to have been crying during his time in Argentina even though he was with his mistress.
June 25th, 2009 at 12:15 amFAIZ: I don’t want him to resign because of the affair.
Well, to be fair, his mind has been on certain tan lines in Argentina. ;)
June 25th, 2009 at 1:12 amThe traditional meaning of “sanfordized” is a trademarked term for pre-wsshing of cotton fabric to minimize shrinkage.
After seeing a couple pictures of Sanford’s very cute brunette girlfriend, Maria Belen Shapur, (those gossip websites are on the job!), I leaned that she is 43 years old, and lives in a Buenos Aires apartment which is located near the Buenos Aires Zoo. She has two teenage sons that are living at home with her.
