FBI Arrests White Supremacist Blogger Hal Turner For Threatening To Kill Federal Judges

Hal Turner Today, FBI agents went to the New Jersey home of white supremacist blogger/radio host Hal Turner and arrested him “on a federal complaint filed in Chicago alleging that he made internet postings threatening to assault and murder three federal appeals court judges in Chicago in retaliation for their recent ruling upholding handgun bans in Chicago and a suburb,” according to a statement released by the Justice Department. A summary of Turner’s dangerous tirade against the judges:

Internet postings on June 2 and 3 proclaimed “outrage” over the June 2, 2009, handgun decision by Chief Judge Frank Easterbrook and Judges Richard Posner and William Bauer, of the Chicago-based 7th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals, further stating, among other things: “Let me be the first to say this plainly: These Judges deserve to be killed.” The postings included photographs, phone numbers, work address and room numbers of these judges, along with a photo of the building in which they work and a map of its location.

Turner’s posts also “referred to the murder of the mother and husband of Chicago-based federal Judge Joan Humphrey Lefkow in February 2005,” saying, “Apparently, the 7th U.S. Circuit Court didn’t get the hint after those killings. It appears another lesson is needed.” In the Justice Department statement, U.S. attorney Patrick Fitzgerald — who announced the charges — said, “We take threats to federal judges very seriously. Period.”

Turner is already in trouble with the law. Earlier this month, he turned himself in to the Connecticut State Police on charges of “inciting violence” against three state officials. He urged his audience to “take up arms” because he was reportedly “angry over legislation that would have given lay members of Roman Catholic churches in Connecticut more control over their parish’s finances.” Turner’s next court appearance in this case is on July 14.

As the Nation has pointed out, Turner has ties to Fox News’ Sean Hannity. In fact, Hannity has “offered his top-rated radio show as a regular forum for Turner’s occasionally racist, always over-the-top rants.” Hannity would also reportedly offer Turner “encouragement” to overcome his cocaine habit and “homosexual leanings.”

Turner’s arrest comes after two major tragedies put the spotlight on the dangers of right-wing extremism: the Holocaust Museum shooting by white supremacist James von Brunn and the assassination of Dr. George Tiller.

Update In 2008, Hannity tried to claim that he had never heard of Turner, but eventually said that he had "banned" him from his show 10 years ago.

Just come out. The sane people of the world will accept you (and we are plentiful), and you don’t have to hate yourself, which just makes you hate others randomly (or because of what you’ve been taught).

    So sad and uneccesary.

I read somewhere *wink wink* (on TP of course) that Sean Hannity tried to help ole Hal with his homosexuality. Instead, Hal decided to take his “therapy” into his own hands by threatening to kill everyone in sight and being a racist!

I totally agree, ShadowBoxer! Less people would get hurt if guys like Hal were just honest with themselves.

  11. ShadowBoxer says:

    KayinMaine,

That’s the problem. Honesty has been sucked dry from the NeoCon base, and they don’t know how to cope with their own lies.

Wanting to be honest is a human instinct, I think, and the guilt that comes with constant dishonesty is crippling, and the only thing left for them in their minds is to kill or harm anyone who doesn’t fit their fragile paradigm.

It’s quite unnerving, to say the very least.

I am absolutely not making that association, and thank you for asking me to make that clear.

I just think that the “values” of neocons (and I use that term because I don’t belive all conservatives are followers of the neocon program) make them unable to realize that they are allowed to feel and act freely on their human tendencies for one gender or the other. And thus, they go ape-shit and do things they think will reconcile their “evil” urges.

Hope I cleared that up somewhat.

Only right wing closeted gays are the violent ones. No way would we ever put that kind of blanket statement on the open gays of our country! Hell, even the lefty gays who are closeted don’t feel the need to start threatening everyone who walks by them or become violent while they’re concealing their sexuality. They’re much more gentle and grounded. Of course, then there’s the outed right wingers who end spending their days rallying against gays, the right to marry, and hating themselves completely! Insane.

Good. This is a step in the right direction. I support the first amendment as much as anyone, but putting out what is essentially a “hit” on somebody (complete with information as to how one could reach the victims) crosses the line no matter where a reasonable person would draw it.

Pundits, talk show hosts, and bloggers have been increasing their “shock” talk incrementally for some time now, in an effort to keep their ever-desensitized audiences. And it’s got to stop.

I think it’s urgent that Congress passes laws against people who use freedom of speech to incite violence or cause someone to get assaulted or even killed. These crazies – O’Reilly, Hannity, Beck or Turner should be prevented from using freedom of speech as a blanket of protection.

It doesn’t matter who the intended victim(s) is – a judge or a doctor – these acts or verbal hate speeches should be called terrorrism and prosecuted as felonies.

    **********************************************************

Someone explain this to me…if Turner has been arrested for making comments on the record suggesting that certain federal judges should be assassinated, regardless of any intention on his part to carry out the murders himself, how is it that Ann Coulter managed to escape arrest after “joking” that Supreme Court Justice John Paul Stevens should be poisoned? In what way did that comment not represent a recommendation that a federal judge be assassinated? The fact that she tried to excuse and dismiss it as a “joke” means little or nothing — rationalizing is exactly what most people do when they’re trying to avoid facing the consequences of their behavior. Why is it that nobody ever so much as questioned her over this — especially in light of the fact that for a couple of years after September 11, there were reports of American citizens being paid visits by FBI agents for such extremist activities as putting up a poster which criticized President Bush?

    Bluestocking,

The difference appears to be that Coulter expressed a general opinion, whereas Taylor was demonstrably explicit in naming names, providing addresses, providing in fact material support for a specific act of violence.

But the fact is that the likes of Ann Coulter should be excoriated and denied large public forums from which to present her “joked” which reflect a violent world-view, and by reason of not just her media access but her frequent promotion by media ‘authorities’ ranging from FOX to TIME magazine who legitimize her as a valid voice of social and political commentary.

Nope, that didn’t happen. The recruit was a random victim.

But glad to see that by drawing an equivalency between the two that violent “messaging’ can be taken to heart and acted upon by and individual, and thus you agree that Taylor is the direct equivalent of the Yemeni extremists that encouraged Mahammed/Bledsoe to murder.

Handguns are made for one reason and that is to kill human beings. — Sscncturn64

I think handguns are made to protect 2nd Amendment rights to protect 1st Amendment rights and to prevent the garrisoning of British troops in one’s den/media room. I think the killing stuff is just a byprrduct of the device, like C02 is a byproduct of fossil-fuel internal combustion engines and breathing, which we with huge advertising budgets like to call ‘LIFE’.

    Sorry , I really shouldn’t joke. — 5th Estate

    ***********************************************************

Have to say, 5th…I’m with Sscncturn64 on this one. It’s true that the Second Amendment — or rather, interpretations thereof! — grant US citizens the right to possess firearms. However, while any gun has the potential to be used against human beings as a lethal weapon, I think you have to admit that there is at least a marginal distinction between the kind of gun designed for hunting and a handgun. I’m not a hunter myself and don’t know many hunters personally. At least as far as I know, however, hunters don’t generally use handguns to kill deer or ducks or rabbits or whatever — nor do they use them to shoot skeet. To the best of my knowledge, handguns are designed with one purpose in mind — protecting yourself and your loved ones from any fellow human being who may pose a threat to your life. However, like most other objects created by human beings, handguns have no inherent morality and can therefore be put to malevolent use just as easily as they can benevolent ones — or perhaps even more easily, considering that human nature as reflected in the behavior of most human beings is largely amoral and self-serving. I’m inclined to agree with Sscncturn64’s opinion on this one, that the Republican’s stereotypical love for the handgun is a reflection of subconscious insecurity and self-absorption — in much the same way that someone with a flashy car, especially the kind of person who revs the engine while stopped at a red light, is sometimes thought to be overcompensating for certain (*ahem*) shortcomings.

Fascist like bowing before corporate overlords instead of representing Americans.

There are 14 defining characteristics of fascism. The Republican Party scores very high on all 14 points.

Add that to the other poll that showed that 34% of Republicans aren’t happy with the way their party is going, they have no where else to go but down. Bluestocking @ 127 Have to say, 5th…I’m with Sscncturn64 on this one

I appear to have confused you a bit with my remarks.

To be clear about my position.
Rifles.shotguns are deigned for hunting and can be used for killing people. Assault rifles and handguns are specifically for killing people.
I believe the NRA’s interpretation of the @nd Amendment is wrong, but that’s the fault of the authors more than anything else.
Widespread gun ownership is an irreversible fact in the US. The constant ridiculous claim that “Democrats are going to take away our guns” is actually the best reason why those who believe that SHOULD HAVE THEIR GUNS TAKEN AWAY! Ironic huh?

Guns make it easier for people to kill other people. Mitigating the ability to kill with ease, to kill multiple times in seconds with ease is just sensible. When this nation was just a bunch of colonial outposts the musket was a hunting tool, the pistol a self-defense/assault weapon and either would take at least thirty seconds to reload and use again.

WHen the nation was founded the situation was the same. The automation of death-dealing and its common convenience wasn;t imagined by the founding fathers. The consequent availablity of such weapons, doesn’ in away affirm the original 2nd amendment rights, nor does their restiction deny those rights.
To be a strict constructionalist, everyone has the right to a flintlock musket and/or a flintlock pistol.

    Bilbo Hussein Baggins Says:
My question is, with the Republican party weakened like it is, why in the hell are they still controlling what happens in our legislature?

I have a theory about that, Bilbo.

First of all, “controlling” is a bit harsh. They are obstructing, sabotaging, and ranting (for lack of a better term). Because they are vocal and disproportionately represented? They make a bigger impression than one would think. But that’s just semantics.

The fact is that they are still committed to going farther to the right despite all logic. The poor things probably can’t change their minds so they will continue to shout the same old crap louder. And our corporate media eats it with a spoon. The BS puts butts in the seat, as they say, so the loudest whiners get the most airplay.

As sad as that sounds there is a plus side. When all is said and done the Rheichwing extremists are louder than their actual numbers would suggest. They are still very dangerous but they are not doing themselves any favors, as this story demonstrates, by increasing the extremism. They are marginalizing themselves on EVERY issue imaginable and most people who aren’t selling “news”/entertainment are on to it.
