U.S. embassy had ‘absolutely no idea’ that Sanford was in Argentina.

Not only did Gov. Mark Sanford’s (R) family and staff seemingly not know that he had taken off to Argentina for the past week, but ABC News reports that the U.S. embassy in Argentina didn’t know either. According to a U.S. embassy official in Buenos Aires, they had “absolutely no idea” that Sanford was in the country and added that the news comes “from out of left field — it would be extremely odd that a US governor would not check in with the embassy.”

Update A source tells TPM Muckraker that “there is some evidence” that Sanford “was not alone” on his trip to Argentina. "The other shoe's gonna drop,” the source said. “I believe there's a reason he wanted to drop his SLED detail."
Update The Plum Line casts some doubt on how "odd" it was that Sanford didn't notify the U.S. embassy after speaking to a State Department spokesman who said that "a governor would not notify state department or embassies if he were going abroad."
Update According to The State, Sanford "declined to give any additional details about what he did other than to say he drove along the coastline." However, the paper notes that driving "along the coast could frustrate a weekend visitor to Argentina. In Buenos Aires, the Avenida Costanera is the only coastal road, and it's less than two miles long. Reaching coastal resorts to the south requires a drive of nearly four hours on an inland highway with views of endless cattle ranches. To the north is a river delta of islands reached only by boat." (HT: The Hill)
Update Jonathan Martin reports, "State. Rep Nikki Haley, a South Carolina Republican gubernatorial hopeful and ally of Gov. Mark Sanford, removed a picture of and quote from the governor from her campaign website last night."
Update ThinkProgress received a statement from spokesperson Sonia Dub in the U.S. embassy in Argentina:
Governor Sanford did not contact our Intergovernmental Affairs Office or the Embassy in BA to register official travel. If he decided to travel as a private citizen, the Department of State would not have to be informed and I refer you to Governor Sanford's office for further details.

Timeline: How Did Sanford’s Bogus Story Evolve?
    By Josh Marshall (TPM)

Gov. Sanford’s (R-SC) staff, wife and even Sanford himself apparently ran through a series of evolving and often completely contradictory explanations about where he was and what he was doing. First, he wasn’t missing, then he was taking some time away from the kids to do something writing (yeah, that one was a doozy), then he was hiking the Appalachian Trail, then his staff was in touch with him and then he weren’t, now he was in Argentina. And those are only the big developments. We’ve put together an official TPM Gov. Sanford Bogus Story Timeline giving you the step by step guide to Sanford’s staffs valiant but ultimately vain efforts to come up with a cover story that would hold up for more than a few hours.

This just stinks to high heaven. While we don’t have any hard evidence that Sanford did anything unethical (unless you count wandering away from your job without a word to anyone “unethical”), the whole situation doesn’t mesh with a scenario on the up-and-up.

If Sanford wanted to take a week off and go to Buenos Aires, why wouldn’t he tell his staff? his wife? his family? his friends? ANYONE?

Or why would he get his staff to lie for him, assuming they did know where he was and were told to cover up for him?

If he has nothing to hide, why is he acting like he does?

It will be interesting to hear what he has to say at his press conference this afternoon. I’m personally interested to see what fresh stamps actually made it into his passport.

    Missmolly,
What gets me is that his office put out the “hiking the Appalachians” meme AFTER they contacted him. So either they knew he wasn’t in the mountains or he lied to his staff about his whereabouts.

This raises question on just who paid for this trip. There is no apparent official business. Hmmmmm.

  14. CageyCretin says:

I should hope that he is being investigated with a fine-toothed comb by the FBI, CIA, DHS, or whoever is appropriate. This could have been a ‘getaway emergency vacation’; could have been a drunken sexual escapade (and what ARE the laws on that for US citizens abroad?); but it also could have been even more shady — what secrets does he have to sell? Certainly the whole cloud of obscurity over this should have anyone questioning the motives(which would have stood firm, had not someone tipped off a reporter who followed up on the tip and caught him at the airport). The lack of observing protocol makes it even more questionable.

he should be kicked out of his home by his wife, kicked out of office by his constitutents, and investigated to the hilt by law enforcement.

Where are the conservative voices on this? Surely they cannot approve….

    5) Found an intensive rehab program — did 30 days of drying out in seven days

    6) Chased hookers in Atlanta all week looking for his own “stimulus program”

    7) Went on a cruise with his soul-mate, Sarah Palin

    8) Can’t blame him for disappearing — he hasn’t been to a KKK rally in more than a decade!

    10) Spent the week on the streets of Tehran single-handedly starting the revolution.

That’d be my theory – Argentina’s becoming a top destination for medical tourism.

He also stated that Sanford should step down.

  34. Max Anax junius -1 says:

    ElBruce,
    That depends…
… Is there a “Public Option” available on TP?

    .

  35. Another Joe says:

    Grassroots Bipartisanship on Health Care

As a follow-up on Nate’s fine work (here and here) on polling about the “public option” in health care reform, it’s worth emphasizing that the two most credible surveyors of public opinion on this subject, the Kaiser Family Foundation and CBS/New York Times, have both found that at least half of self-identified Republicans favor a well-described public option.

So the question must be asked: if Barack Obama wants to conduct a bipartisan approach to universal health care, what does that mean in terms of the public option? Killing or watering down the public option in order to (maybe) attract the support of Sen. Chuck Grassley, and not much of anybody else in the congressional Republican ranks? Or maintaining it to appeal to rank-and-file Republicans, who favor it despite the views of their “leaders” and the polarized atmosphere in Washington?

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — Personal trainer and self-labeled ex-prostitute Mike Jones, whose allegations regarding disgraced Baptist megachurch preacher Ted Haggard led to the latter’s resignation, says he spent the weekend in a Colorado hotel room with missing South Carolina Republican Gov. Mark Sanford. And he has a plane ticket receipt with Sanford’s name on it that he says proves it.

A spokeswoman for Sanford’s office called the allegation “beyond ludicrous; shameful,” adding that Sanford is a “married man who is deeply committed to his wife and children, whom he loves very, very much.”

“Governor Sanford would never engage in the incredibly immoral acts Mr. Jacobs has alleged took place,” the spokeswoman said. “Governor Sanford believes homosexual acts are a sin and violate the Bible and the sacred institution of traditional marriage, which is why he fully supports South Carolina’s Defense of Marriage Act, which defines marriage as being between only a man and a woman.”

The spokeswoman wouldn’t say if the governor plans to sue for defamation of character, only that “Mr. Jones should be very, very careful about what he says about Governor Sanford in the future. And we’ll be praying for his soul at this clearly troubling time in his life.”

This Sanford event is different. You can’t just split without being able to justify your whereabouts. Is he having contacts or covert relationships that could jeopardize national security? He can’t explain, so we don’t know.

If he took off to get time alone. That’s cool. But, he should have at least told the people that are closest to him.

It calls his judgement into question.

Additionally, although I feel that our leaders personal lives should be de-emphasized, conservatives and Republicans face additional scrutiny because they often make moral relationship issues paramount. That’s a mistake.

The best thing Republicans could do today, is to pledge to retreat from their hollow judgmental attitudes towards others.

SC Dems Respond to Gov’s Unexcused Absence
    June 24, 2009 – 12:50 pm

South Carolina Democratic Party Chair Carol Fowler issued a statement slamming Governor Sanford and his staff.

Fowler called the Governor’s trip “the height of irresponsibility” saying “Mark Sanford has been pretty much missing in action for the last 6 and a half years. But it is not acceptable for him to be actually missing.”

The party also criticized the Governor and his staff for having been “less than truthful about his whereabouts”.

    ___________________________________________________________

That’s actually a fair question and deserves an answer.

The biggest difference between the two men, of course, is that Mark Sanford is a sitting state governor, and John Edwards was a private citizen holding no office at all at the time his sexual activities became known.

The other difference is that Edwards managed to carry out his adultery without vanishing for days and putting valuable state resources on the verge of launching an expensive investigation as to his whereabouts.

I personally don’t approve of adultery. However, I recognize that adultery by itself (considering no other factors) is the business of the adulterer, his wife, his family, the person he cheated with, that person’s family, and his God.

What’s galling about politicians who can’t keep their pants zipped is the lying, the hypocrisy, and doing it on the taxpayers’ dime. Some, like Ensign, are screwing outside the lines at the same time they condemn others who do the same, and trumpet “family values” (in defense of Mark Sanford, he’s never been one for false moral sanctimony, so he gets a pass on the hypocrisy thing). Others use resources not belonging to them to carry out their activities — such as using taxpayer money for trips and hotel rooms, diddling on the job when they should be working, etc. And others just lie through their teeth about where they’ve been for days.

I’m not a fan of what either man did. But the bottom line is that Edwards wasn’t an employee of the people when he did it, and Mark Sanford was.

The good news out of this: We are one step closer to an inevitable Republican capitulation on this idea that they somehow hold some higher moral ground.

What I would prefer much more than Republican politicians chastising Sanford, is an admission there needs to be a re-examination of Republican moral judgmentalism. They’ve obviously got no moral legs to stand on.

    DRxJ,
Are you scared to address me? Why do you fear me? You are scared becasue you keep addressing me by another poster’s name. This is a sign of fear of the unknown, so you call me by a name you know to reassure yourself.

  188. The Truth says:

    DRxJ,
I’m from Hollywood not Miami. It’s 15 minutes away also there about 5 Million people in this metro area. I guess we are all the same person here. But I get you have to reassure yourself when dealing with the unknown. Therefore you use the known to define the unknown. That is a sign of fear.

  189. DRxJ says:

    This is great.
Twajie is about to self explode, just like last night.

    Popcorn, anyone?

  190. dbadass says:

    The Truth
What is there to be afraid of? I’ll tell you what you can stop looking becuase you won’t find it. Why not admit the error and when I get back we can talk. K?

  191. backup says:

    gummitch and WAYNEBRO.

Toe the line, tow the line, whatever – you got me.

All I know is that I do not want a line attached to my dinghy.

  192. The Truth says:

    dbadass,
Sorry I was reffering to DRxJ.

  193. dbadass says:

    Don’t be afraid The Truth….

  194. The Truth says:

    DRxJ,
Wow so you think I am this Twajie from last night! LOL!
Last night me and my Wife went to this great restaurant, so too bad it wasn’t me. You call everyone Twajie, don’t you?

A sign of fear of the unknown!

  195. The Truth says:

    DRxJ and company,
I have to run to a meeting with a client up in Boca. Hopefully the real Twajie will appear and annoy you all.
    See ya all tommorow!

  196. backup says:

Again, the personal lives of our leaders shouldn’t be that important.

But, this is an opportunity to contrast those leaders caught in relationship scandals with President Obama.

Assuming that the perception of his marriage and family life are accurate, his conduct is admirable.

I’m sure the President would have ample opportunity to pursue temptations.

But, he has given no indication that he does (or ever has). To the contrary, he seems to have a very positive relationship with his wife and kids.

It shouldn’t be that important, but it would be hard to argue that behavior, used as role model, isn’t good for America.

  197. shoeless says:

    The Truth Says:

    I dated several Argentinian Women.

And yet, none of them told you they prefer to be called Argentines.

  198. duvetyn says:

    WAYNEBRO Says:
    ——————————————————————————–

    The Truth Says:

Sanford gets a medal for what he did!

    He’s a PIMP!

    Yea?

What do his wife and children get?

    WAYNEBRO, this!

    Grounds for Fault based divorce:
    (1) adultery
    (2) alcoholism and/or drug addiction
    (3) physical cruelty
    (4) willful desertion for 1 year

and probably most of his money, house, cars

  199. WAYNEBRO says:

    backup Says:

I don’t judge anybody with an affair. It’s not right, but we’re all imperfect.

But, one issue about this tops my thinking. You live by the sword, you die by the sword.

Conservatives have a reputation for a holier than thou attitude when it comes to morality.

    Gee, ya THINK?

  200. dbadass says:

Sort of odd that The Truth had to run along and just when I so wanted to talk with them…

  201. rabbitcore says:

Sanford “N” Staff, Any mercy for this brutzing bully or any other GOP family values pervert, I’m fresh out. And after what he said about President Clinton, he should be discredited and abandoned like the hypocrite he truely is.
