Harold Koh confirmed to State Department legal post.

picture-121After months of GOP stalling tactics and conservative fearmongering, Yale Law School Dean Harold Koh was confirmed by the Senate today to be the State Department’s top legal adviser. He passed by a vote of 62-35, with five Republicans voting to confirm — Sens. Olympia Snowe (ME), Susan Collins (ME), Richard Lugar (IN), Mel Martinez (FL), and George Voinovich (OH). Yesterday, Senate Democrats successfully avoided a filibuster by a 65-31. Sens. Lamar Alexander (R-TN), Judd Gregg (R-NH), and Orrin Hatch (R-UT) all voted for cloture but did not vote for Koh’s confirmation. Sen. Thad Cochran (R-MS) skipped the cloture vote but voted against Koh’s confirmation today.

I suspect this is going to be fairly typical of anybody President Obama appoints for anything. All Republicans, save for a small handful, will vote “no” — just because.

But how they’re going to shake the “party of NO” image in the 2010 elections is beyond me.

Off topic — Farrah Fawcett isn’t the only celebrity who passed away today. Michael Jackson has also died — apparently from cardiac arrest.

And their problem with Koh was what again?

Obama nominated him. This will be standard procedure and I suspect the fine senators from Maine, and perhaps Lugar, too, will be voting more and more with the Dems as they see their party representing nothing but “NO!”

    PEACE

Yes — I may have been hasty in Post #1. I saw it on my local news source that he had died, but all the national news sources are just reporting that he’s been rushed to the hospital with apparent cardiac arrest and not breathing.

  7. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Sorry I didn’t see your but now it appears to have been confirmed. So sad.

  8. Reggie says:

You may have been hasty but you were also correct. The LA Times has reported his demise.

Pop star Michael Jackson was pronounced dead by doctors this afternoon after arriving at a hospital in a deep coma, city and law enforcement sources told The Times

I reckon Koh might find the Obama administration a tad mundane

No legal questions about torture, rendition, wiretapping, war
    crimes, etc.

He may have to stick to advice on diplomatic relations for a
    change.

Yeah, you heard what I said and I will scream it at the top of my lungs. Keith Olbermann, he who likes to give out the worst person in the world award, has just garnered the prize from me for the biggest piece of crap in the world.

The last few days have not been a bonanza for the RNC. Connections to homeland terrorists, marital infidelity by one of the top rated poster boys, and the list is going to grow.
The GOP may just be getting a little nervous, don’t you think?
Conformation of Koh may be the realization that they are fighting windmills and/or they are losing the base support as well as the independents.
I hope Obama’s stalling concerning the torture issues may have been the fact that he did not have a point man. Now he does!

Oh, it’s another “let’s talk about Olbermann” wingnut. OK… I like his show sometimes.

It is not fiscally conservative for taxpayers to be paying the salaied and benefits for (R)s to throw spitballs, disrupt class and play hookey. The obstruction of the party of no is a total waste of money. The (R)s should all be fired and sent home to do their day jobs.

Yeah, you heard what I said and I will scream it at the top of my lungs.

Ah, this is what you were talking about. OK. Here’s the link. You do realize that anybody who registers at DailyKos can post their own blog (or “diary”) there, right? You can go there now, register an account and say whatever you want also. Then come back and tell us all about what “DailyKos said.” It’ll be awesome. Go!

Well, they could only have delayed it for so long. Time ran out. And they don’t have the votes to really stop anything without a pretty good reason.

Here’s hoping. Of course there’ll be a huge amount of paperwork to do before they can announce everything, seeing how much of a mess Bush/Cheney left everything in.

  38. ElBruce says:

    FreeMarketLiberal Says:

Oh boy how I love that the Independents even post how REDICULOUS TP is!!!

There’s nothing “independent” about your wingnut site.

24Ahead.com offers no-nonsense coverage of topics such as immigration, national politics, media bias, and multiculturalism and we’ve been doing so in over 8000 posts since 2002.

The coverage leans somewhat to the “right” on many issues, but this site gives no quarter to Party hacks, no matter the Party. This is an archive/news and opinion/advocacy/activism site that occasionally does original reporting.

Bold added by me – all right-wing code words. This is not politically “independent” at all. Change “right” to “left” in the second paragraph and it could be describing TP.

If it’s really “independent,” then the site owner should be some organization with a reputation for “independence.” But nope, it’s just some guy from Hollywood.

What makes this particular individual’s website “independent?” As far as I can tell he’s just another wingnut. So why cite this guy’s blog as an “independent” news source?

The site you reference itself oddly cites this post, which merely supports Amanda Terkel’s conclusions regarding the Hannity/Turner relationship. And yet, your site calls it a “smear” to point out that Hannity and Turner are linked, saying that we should dig through the comments at Huffpo for proof:

…pointing out that Hannity’s radio producer has noted a series of holes in Turner’s account (choose “HuffPost’s picks” on the comments popup at huffingtonpost.com/2008/03/23/sean-hannity-confronted-o_n_92961.html and do a find for PhilBoyceWABC).

Digging through a comments thread on a website is not an appropriate journalistic citation. Not even for a wingnut. It’s over 8 pages, and I’m not going to click through them all anyway. Fortunately, HuffPo updated that item to include/explain PhilBoyceWABC’s comments:

Update: Newhounds has updated its Hannity/Turner post, pointing out a comment signed by Phil Boyce, Program Director of WABC, Hannity’s radio station, disputing many of the facts, especially the dates, in Turner’s account (Boyce’s comment has been posted here as well. See first comment below). Newshounds responded to Boyce’s criticisms, saying: “the real issue is what was Turner allowed to say on the air, how often and what was Hannity’s reaction? We have an article in a national magazine plus one of the parties involved who say that Hannity was a welcoming, friendly and encouraging host for Turner’s views for a good while. Neither Boyce nor Hannity has specifically denied that.”

Here’s Newshounds’ response. It makes for a fascinating read, too fascinating for me to quote a portion of. Well OK, maybe one; I can’t resist:

In his post (Warning: not for the faint of heart) that reveals just what kind of guy he is, Turner writes:

In my opinion, based on my first hand experience, I believe Sean Hannity is, in fact, a Hal Turner sort of guy. It seems to me that a big difference between Sean and me is that I am willing to say publicly what I think about savage Black criminals, diseased, uneducated illegal aliens and the grotesque cultural destruction wrought by satanic jews while Sean and many others keep quiet to protect their paychecks.

So your “independent” website is lambasting Terkel for reporting (as they say, “smearing”) that Hannity and Turner have a relationship which (although disputed by Hannity’s program director) has been thoroughly documented by Newshounds. Not very “independent” after all, is it?

The moral of the story: learn to traceback your links before marching in here and telling us what the Interwebs say. If I have to do your homework for you, then things aren’t going to go well for you at all, you stupid wingnut.
