Republican SC lawmaker: GOP needs to ‘lose the stinking rot of self-righteousness.’
Rep. Bob Inglis (R-SC) was one of President Clinton’s harshest critics in the 1990s, an “impeachment ‘manager’ who attacked the moral failings of the president.” However, in an interview with the Wall Street Journal, Inglis says that while he has since recognized that nobody’s perfect, his party is still clinging to its “self-righteousness”:
But with his governor now felled by similar temptations, Inglis sees an opening for the Republican Party, a chance to “lose the stinking rot of self-righteousness” and “to understand we are all in need of some grace.”
This is not “Bob Inglis 1.0,” the one that was a “self-righteous” expletive, he said in an interview with Washington Wire today. [...]
Indeed, Sanford’s political fall could be a saving grace for what remains of his governorship, Inglis suggested. “This may be an opportunity to extend a little grace to other people, to realize that maybe it’s not 100% this way or that way,” Inglis said.
Inglis also said that while he voted against the stimulus package, he opposed Sanford’s decision to reject the funding. He said that he told the governor, “for goodness sake, take the money.” (HT: TPM)

In the first place, there’s nothing wrong with homosexuality. One can be gay and still criticize adulterous behavior — nothing hypocritical about that.
In the second place, we (at least most of us) aren’t judging Sanford for his sex life, even if we may find it personally repugnant. We’re judging him for lying, being a hypocrite, and abandoning his job without a word. But as vulgar as it may be, his sex life is his business. And that of his wife, his mistress, his family, and his God. But not ours.
In the third place, I find it amazing that the wingnuts think we should “forgive” Sanford while they are STILL bashing Clinton’s dalliance with an intern a dozen years ago.
Can you legitimately defend Sanford’s disappearance from his job without a word to anyone? Not because of what he did during that time, but because he’s the chief executive of South Carolina and as such, should be reachable at all times, even while on vacation, in case of emergency? Can you defend his going incommunicado without handing over the power of his office to the Lt. Governor? THIS is the problem. Not his sex life. And I think if most of us went AWOL from our jobs without a word for several days, we’d be fired.

They need to learn that despite what they think, corporations are not people. They do not deserve person hood. And greed and power should not be the only game in town to get their attention. And most of all, they need to learn that a healthy, educated population makes a strong country. And everyone is entitled to a shot at it.
