Gingrey Compares Democratic Leadership To The ‘Forces Of Darkness’ In Iran And North Korea

Last week, several Republican House members compared themselves to Iranian protesters, claiming that being in the minority in Congress was just like being violently oppressed in Iran. “I wonder if there isn’t more freedom on the streets of Tehran right now than we are seeing here,” said Rep. David Dreier (R-CA). Reps. Pete Hoekstra (R-MI) and John Culberson (R-TX) made similar comparisons on Twitter.

Despite the online uproar that followed the egregious comparisons, Rep. Phil Gingrey (R-GA) went even further today. Complaining about the proposed rules for debate on clean energy legislation, Gingrey compared Democrats to the “forces of darkness” in Iran and North Korea:

GINGREY: Madam speaker, thank you. I rise in opposition to this rule and to the underlying legislation. I’m just not sure to which I’m more opposed. Americans are watching as from Iran to North Korea, the forces of darkness are attempting to silence the forces of democracy and freedom. The irony is on this day, the Democratic process and the nation’s economic freedom are under threat not by some rogue state, but in this very chamber in which we stand. Good people may disagree on the impact or the merits of this bill. But no one can disagree with the fact that the speaker and her rules committee have silenced the opposition.

Watch it:

Update In his Washington Examiner column this week, Newt Gringrich compared the fight against the climate change bill to Soviet oppression of the Polish Solidarity Movement for freedom in the 1980s.

I love it when republicans are given a chance to speak out publicly in the house and senate about how their voices are being silenced… i love seeing it broadcast on television that their opinions are not heard.

these poor republicans are never given a chance to get their views out to the public.

    HAHAHAHAHAHA

ridiculous…. just because things don’t go your way in a democracy doesn’t mean you’ve been silenced.

  13. tom says:

I am beginning to feel sorry for the republicans. Not because they are an oppressed minority subjegated by the “forces of darkness” . . . but because their utter uselessness, their lack of constructive policy ideas, their lack of willingness to participate in the legislative process has forced them to resort to such a phony and transparent defense of their own failings as calling themselves victims.

They are victims all right . . . victims of their own failed ideology, lack of judgement, immorality and incompetence. The thought that they would be blaming others for their own short-comings is the ultimate admission of their own fatal flaws.

June 26 Conference at National Press Club About DOJ Political Prosecutions Features Rep. John Conyers, Don Siegelman, Scott Horton, and Former Alabama Federal Judge Clemon

WASHINGTON, June 25 /PRNewswire-USNewswire/ — Judiciary Committee Chairman John Conyers is scheduled to keynote an unprecedented conference about political prosecutions by the Bush DOJ on June 26 from 8am-11am at the National Press Club.

Experts from Congress and federal courts along with defendants and legal commentators will discuss evidence before the Judiciary Committee that the Bush administration targeted defendants on the basis of political party. Elected Democrats were seven times more likely to be investigated than GOP officials, according to a leading study.

I bet virtually no one here heard this one – but it is so much more important when some wingnut says something stupid (which is what wingnuts do each and every day).

Here’s a story that is actually about change – obviously, not what TP is all about.

Of course, if Conyers really wanted to do something about this, could have done much more then send all those nasty letters over the past few years.

Some part of the B-2 bomber is either designed, or manufactured, or tested, or stored, or shipped, or installed, or retired by some Govt. contractor in every single ONE of the nation’s 435 Congressional districts.

On the international stage, that’d be immediately recognized as colonialism.

No Congresscritter wants there ever to come a time when a contract expires and is not replaced by a new one, because if that happened, some (gasp) “opportunistic, dishonest” political opponent might make it an issue in the next primary or general election.

If Gingrey and the rest of the Congressional Republicans are unhappy with the rules, they only have themselves to blame.

As soon as the Gingrich “Contract With America” crowd took over in 1995, they wasted no time in changing the rules to marginalize Democrats as much as possible, including making it effectively impossible for any legislation to make it to the floor without being sponsored by a Republican. And as soon as one of their own landed in the White House and the threat of veto vanished, they added reconciliation to the toolbox — rendering the Democrats even more voiceless.

And NOW they’re whining? Hey — they started it. They defined what the minority party should be (invisible). They can now lie in the bed they made.

Remember my question regarding whether you understood how alpine glaciers accumulate, flow and retreat?
I wasn’t doing a survey, it was a relevant question and by posting that link, you gave me your answer.
    You don’t know squat.

“as the planes had been buried under 25 stories of ice and drifted over a mile from their original location.”

The fact that it was 250 feet under the ice is to be expected and what that tells us on average 52 inches of ice has accumulated on top of the planes each year.

What we don’t know from this link is what is the difference in glacier mass balance between the time of the crash and the present time. We also need to compare the location of the glacial terminus at the time of the crash and it’s present location.
Unless you prove that the glacial terminus is static or has advanced, along with an accumulation of glacial density, all you have done is posted an IRRELEVANT LINK.

Thanks Backup, after 30 years I finally used some knowledge from the boring 4 hour lectures in advanced glacial geomorphology.
