Steele: I ‘just need to learn how to shut up and listen.’

steeleredbluee RNC chairman Michael Steele attended a town hall forum at the Detroit Athletic Club yesterday, an event “meant to establish a dialogue with Republicans in urban centers.” Steele was largely silent on recent GOP scandals and made fewer controversial or silly comments than he has in the past, telling the audience, “My mama told me when I was a little boy: ‘You just need to learn how to shut up and listen.’” A sampling of what he heard at the forum, according to the Detroit News:

Marie Kaigler-Reese, a Ph.D student at Michigan State University, said that is not enough. She said the party takes African Americans like herself and trots them out to show they care about blacks but does nothing to address matters like corruption in Detroit’s City Hall.

(Republicans) “are out of touch,” she said, noting her son has become so disenfranchised with the party he has become a Democrat and is running for office in Ohio. “Michael Jackson is dead. God rest his soul. I am not going to be the Michael Jackson of the Republican Party. You will not use me until I am dead.

What a sorry pathetic “doofus” Steele is.

  2. vinylspear says:

Now that you’ve figured out the shut up part, when will you go away?

  3. ralph the wonder locust says:

I really wish TP would take a little more care with their headlines.

For instance, it does not appear that Steele said “I need to shut up and listen”. It appears that he was repeating advice his mama gave him, which is not the same thing as admonishing himself.

It’s cheap and makes TP look bad.

  4. DallasNE says:

Well, that just went flying over Steele’s head. She smacks Steele right between the eyes and he doesn’t get it.

    _________

Apart from sharing the same first name, you don’t have to worry about that, Mikey.

I’d be thinking “the Lou Costello of the the Republican Party” might be more appropriate… or perhaps your choice of Larry, Curley, or Moe…

I really wish that people would stay away from using the recently departed to make a point, regardless of party affiliation, be it metaphorically or not.

But TRoHS, doesn’t it make it a little like playing badminton without a net?

  9. tigger says:

Most of us would settle for “shut up”, Michael…

  10. gummble-bee-itch says:

Sorry, but as I read this, Steele’s reference to his mother’s advice had only to do with this single visit. Translated: “I’m just here today to listen to you,” which always sounds so sincere and well-meant (yeesh) and is inevitably garbage. Steele is clearly not admonishing himself for all the dumb remarks he’s made over the last months and there’s no way he’ll ever “shut up and listen” because it’s clearly not possible for him to do so.

  11. Jane E. Schneider says:

    Morning, TRoS, ralph, everyone.

In re-reading this, it appears that it was Marie Kaigler-Reese who said the part about Michael Jackson. Not Michael Steele, who is (apparently) too stupid to realize that he’s being used.

Ralph, you’re right, TP cut-and-pasted the quote badly. Maybe the headline should have read: “Michael Steele, Listen to Your Mama!”?

  12. RWeSafer says:

Oh yes they will (use people only to serve the Republics win-at-all-costs tactics).

  13. buzzbomb says:

Michael Jackson???? What a stupid analogy. Guess it shows Republicans, black or white, are all f%cked in the head.

  14. Jane E. Schneider says:

And, no offense to Ms. Kaigler-Reese, but exactly what does she mean by: “I am not going to be the Michael Jackson of the Republican Party”? She’s not going to be a mentally unstable genius who had too many cosmetic surgeries/drugs? It’s a ridiculous, meaningless comment.

  15. Doodlebug Shayne says:

The trolls never show up to defend Steele but they’ll be calling Judge Sotomayor racist the next time theres a story on her.

  16. Jane E. Schneider says:

Ms. Kaigler-Reese really should have said, “I am not going to be the Michael Steele of the Republican Party. You will not use me until I am dead.”

Maybe it was a slip of the tongue, because Jackson was on people’s minds. Maybe what she really meant to say was “I am not going to be the Michael Steele of the Republican Party” – not be a token African-American for the GOP.

also posted on the dead GE thread, some good news:

GE opening research center in Michigan
    Fri Jun 26, 2009 12:06pm EDT

DETROIT (Reuters) – General Electric Co plans to open a research center in the economically ailing U.S. state of Michigan, where it will develop new manufacturing technologies.

The $100 million site will eventually employ more than 1,100 people and will be part of GE’s network of Global Research Centers, the largest U.S. conglomerate said in a statement on Friday. It will be located in Van Buren Township, in Michigan.

Michigan, home to the nation’s auto industry, faces high unemployment as a result of the car makers’ struggles.

GE Chief Executive Jeff Immelt told reporters in a press conference that hiring for the facility would start by the end of this year.

GE “can tap into some of the great labor resources that already exist in the state,” Immelt said, adding that, “We view this as a long term commitment.”

The announcement by GE comes on the same day that General Motors Corp is expected to announce that it will build a small car at an existing plant in Orion, Michigan.

GE, the world’s biggest maker of jet engines and electricity-producing turbines, also has research centers in Niskayuna, New York; Bangalore, Shanghai and Munich.

  29. Bilbo Hussein Baggins says:

Regarding President Obama’s so-called “executive order allowing for indefinite detention”:

The White House dismissed reports that it has drafted an executive order allowing indefinite detention in the United States of some of the top terror suspects at Guantanamo Bay.

An administration official told AFP that no such draft order existed, though internal deliberations were taking place on how to deal with those inmates who could not be released or tried in civilian courts.

    http://rawstory.com/08/news/2009/06/27/white-house-denies-indefinite-detention-report/

This just goes to show that we need to take public reports with a grain of salt. Our right wing MSM is out to derail President Obama and isn’t shy about either distorting something or flat out making up a story. Until such time as I hear something out of President Obama’s mouth, I will choose not to believe what’s reported in our MSM.

I wonder if this troll came here to alienate rather than align itself? Seems to be a right wing phenomenon, thinking one thing while trying to write or say something else.

I suppose it knows that Rome did burn but not that Nero was accused of fiddling while it burned, he wasn’t arguing.

The first order of business on a sinking ship is to stop the source of water. Unless a bucket will plug the leak it will be like someone treading water, a lot of work but no progress.

Perhaps this troll needs to go back to school to learn some language basics.

Again, his brain went back into stupidity and his brain, once again, got lost in the closet. Mike, haven’t your mama taught you that it is not nice to speak ill of the dead, given the fact that Jackson has been dead in the past two days?
