Could Census fear-mongering cost Bachmann her seat?

bachmannWhile noting that “conspiracy theories have been a constant in Rep. Michele Bachmann’s political career since she first ran for the Stillwater school board in the late 1990s,” the Minneapolis-St. Paul Star-Tribune’s editorial page called into question the collateral damage that could stem from Bachmann’s irrational 2010 Census fear-mongering. The Star-Tribune points out that not only is Bachmann “a politician interested more in being the face of the fringe element than solving the real-life problems of her north-suburban district,” but that “she may be setting in motion events that could substantially hurt her home state and potentially cost her the office she occupies.” The Star-Tribune writes:

The 2010 census will likely determine whether Minnesota loses one of its eight U.S. House seats; population determines seat allocation. Political experts agree that a few thousand people not filling out census forms may be all it takes for the state to lose a congressional advocate in the nation’s capital. If Minnesota were to lose a congressional seat, Bachmann’s district appears to be candidate for absorption. Bachmann has been careful to say that she’s willing to tell the census how many people live in her household, the basic information that will determine whether Minnesota keeps a congressional seat. But that’s a message that’s easily lost in her fear-mongering; Beck didn’t help when he pantomimed flushing census documents down the toilet.

shhhhh…let’s not tell her the truth, which she should know, or the consequences, which likely will result in our seeing less and less of her unqualified self.

  2. Bozo The Neoclown says:

we all know if nutty shlley loses her seat in the house of reps, she’ll be a “guest actress” on the “milf’s like it big” website within a month.

I will actually miss her if she is booted — I mean she is comedy gold.

  5. kats says:

This would be the ONLY way Crazy Shelly would lose her seat, those fools will keep electing her. Expect a prime time show on Fox News if she loses her seat.

  6. calavzma says:

    oh man

it’d be so rich if her sit was dissolved because she was an idiot.

    hahahaha

  7. ElBruce says:

Have I not been saying this for days now? Totally called it. If her constituents don’t fill out the census, then her hyper-gerrymandered district could get broken up and absorbed into others. She’s not likely to win a race in any of those.

  8. tom says:

Bimbo Bachmann is probably hoping that her House seat is eliminated. That way, she will be free to become a full-time right-wing media whore. After all, her Congressional responsibilites are only getting in her way right now.

I’m sure she is already negotiating her FoxSnooze contract. If I were Gretchen Carlson, I would be very nervous. Shelley would fit in so well with Little Stevie and Brian on the “curvy couch” in the morning. And the “Hannity and Bachmann” show is bound to be a big ratings hit amongst the braindead FoxSnooze viewership.

  9. Bozo The Neoclown says:

the more i listen to batshit crazy bachmann, the more she sounds like a whacked out seperatist who moves to the hills and lives off of “critter” in fear of the government being “out to get her”

  10. ralph the wonder locust says:

Political experts agree that a few thousand people not filling out census forms may be all it takes for the state to lose a congressional advocate in the nation’s capital.

Well, her state is already limping along with only half of their normal Senate representation. Shelly seems totally cool with that.

  11. RUCeriousMaggot! says:

    Where’s her pearl necklace?

  12. Sersi says:

It’s about time. I mean, from her calls to find there were any Communists in Congress to her threat to violate the law in not filling out the census, this chick deserves her own brand of crazy and petri dish.

Maybe now, she’ll at least wise up and keep her insane comments to herself. Not likely to happen, but one can dream.

  14. spencers mom says:

ElBruce, I’ve been saying the same thing here for days, too.

What the editorial fails to mention is that, with the decreased population, federal funding also decreases.

Between Norm “Don’t seat Franken!” Coleman and Batshit Bachmann, Minnesota is getting fcuked.

    PEACE

  15. glogrrl says:

I’m sorry, this may sound sexist (and I am a woman), but Michelle Bachmann’s face just scresms “I’m a dumb broad.”
A more vacant look I have never seen…not even on Faux Noise!

  16. StratRat says:

The right side likes to think of themselves as Serious and Thoughtfull. Bachmann proves – as does Beck, Limbaugh, hannity, Coulter, Oreilly, etc.. – that the right side has terminal mental issues and a huge chip on their shoulders from all the years of being victims of their own stupidity.

So Bachmann has herself all tied up in knots. If she gives information she believes will be used against her, she is screwed. If she witholds information, she will likely lose her seat in Congress. What is a nutjob to do?

  17. glogrrl says:

Uh, make that “screams”….sorry, broken wrist, one-fingered, left-handed typing.

  20. Mathazar says:

Thank you, thank you, Star Tribune. You made my day. Perhaps
now her constituents will realize that she’s working against their best interests.

Keep up the good work, Strib.

  21. Cats r Flyfishn says:

One can only hope that Minnesotans follow Bachman and Beck’s lead.

Odd, both Bachman and Palin had their political beginnings as school board members.

  22. pete says:

As a, sometimes, proud Minnesotan who lives just a few blocks outside her District I am thrilled by this item. It’s about the first time either of the two major local papers have printed anything that calls her on her batscat. Normally the content of the op/ed page has consisted of whining, from her or a surrogate, about the “librul media” “unfairly distorting” what she said. And she loves playing the victim for the rubes.

However, she may be in more trouble than she thinks. Though I claim no special knowledge I would think that national support will flow in to whoever faces her in the next election. Between her growing national reputation as a dangerous lunatic and revenge for holding up Franken’s seating? I don’t envy any Minnesots GOoPer.

In Crazy Shelly’s case it just might be enough to counter the contributions by the national “Psychochristians” who have funded her thus far.

  27. wiley says:

That would be a refreshingly sane thing to happen.

  28. nobillary says:

“Could Census fear-mongering cost Bachmann her seat?”

Gee if that were to happen, it might just be that silver lining we’re all looking for in her weird “conspiracy theories”!

Seriously though, I think she’s gone even further overboard with her off-the-wall theories than she ever has. Last fall, after her statement to Chris Matthews that the press should look into who in Congress might be “anti-American”, she just barely kept her seat in the last election. Since then, she’s gone even further down her bonkers slippery slope, so hopefully the voters in her district are catching on. With luck, they are as sick of her as the rest of us and will vote her out of office next election!

  29. dasm says:

  35. tim.ned says:

Oh horsefeathears! Bachmann speaks from the heart just like Joe Biden. And as a conservative I like Joe Biden along with his refreshing sense of humor. And she isn’t afraid to speak on any forum or issue. Yes, believe the Minneapolis Star and Tribune. I cancelled my subscription when the Tribune ran a story about Abu Musab Al-Zarqawi when he was taken out. According to the Star & Tribune he was a lost soul looking for purpose in life when in prison he learned the teachings of Osama bin Laden. Nowhere in this story did they explain that he was child molester and sex pervert. Nowhere was there counterbalance or did they provide a profile that his was a murderer and just perhaps Al Qaida provided him justification for his monstrous deeds. The Star & Tribune is in bankruptcy because they are losing long term customers like me. Normally I am concerned when companies are in trouble but this organization, I can’t wait because they have a one sided opinion in their editorial and that’s it.

  36. pags2 says:

Losing a seat in Congress is not as bad as having a lunatic representing your state in Congress.

No. If you want political one sided commentary go to FOX, MSNBC, or this website! Newspapers report news “Period”. And for their editorial page, yes give me balance. I exercised my right and cancelled my subscription. And I’m not alone.

I think that she should lose her seat because she is a batshit crazy moron.
I would like to see her lose her seat by having the people of her district vote her out in a historic landslide as an undeniable repudiation of her amazing stupidity and incompetence.
I know that that’s asking a lot of the voters who elected her twice, but I am an optimist at heart.

  45. Winski says:

Let’s just make sure we understand which ’seat’ we’re talking about – She should LOOSE her seat in the US Congress, NOT the seat on the first new NASA moonshot!! We have GOT to get her off this planet and onto somewhere else here we’re not touched by her massive stupidity.

  52. JMOHR says:

It is really time to review the sanity laws in order to commit some of these right wing loonies. Face it, those who support a Michelle Bachmann, believe in the conspiracy to seat a foreign born Obama and some of the other clap trap that we have heard, are simply not sane people. It is time to treat these poor mentally disturbed people with the care necessary while protecting our republic.

We need to start by confining some like tim.ned to a mental institution until such time as they can demonstrate that they belong to the reality based world.

The things she is speaking are factually incorrect. They are harmful to her constituents. Others have offered to explain them to her, and she ignores them while continuing to perpetuate lies. “Speaking from the heart” refers to explaining your emotions, not facts. Questions of fact are neither feelings nor faith. One is not excused for “really believing in” the lies they spread.

  60. labman57 says:

Overall stupidity should cost Bachmann her seat in Congress.

  61. Willy says:

I think I’ve figured out Bachmann’s motive. You see, Bachmann is purposely trying to eliminate her House seat in order to create smaller government. She’s so stoopid that she doesn’t realize that the total number of House seats remains the same regardless if Minnesota loses one.

    ** roll eyes **

  62. wiley says:

Enough people boldly refuse to answer the census and Minnesota might lose a seat. These wing-nuts don’t actually read the Constitution, they’re just fighting for their impression of it.

Bachman – someone this country needs at a time when Obama and his goon squad want to take our freedoms away. The woman has every right to fear why Obama wants so much private information – what time do you leave for work, what time do you get home, what time do you use the bathroom, etc.

Looks like ACORN wants to be able to help themselves to what’s not theirs.

I have the same fears. When I fill the census I will follow suit – only number of people in my household.

    You people better wake up.

You are listening to Fox News to much, as a matter of fact the census ask alot of questions, from how many people in your home, too how much you make to the ethnic background. If you think that Obama is going to take your freedom away, think again, your freedom has already taken away in 2001, it is called the “PATRIOT ACT”, the warrentless wiretaps, the policing the internet. NSA listening in on your private conversations. Hearing pillow talk between our service people and their loved ones.

It is illegal to NOT fill out the census and it is a prison sentence and/or a $250,000 dollar fine or both. Don’t listen to the rantings of a whack job like Michele Bachmann, she needs to take her meds.

  66. CageyCretin says:

    SickofObama Says:

Well, let me make an educated guess — you were “Sick of Obama” on, oh, say November 4, 2008? Yeah, that’s about right. In other words, you do not believe in American politics or American government unless it is being won and run by the poeple you want. How thoroughly UNdemocratic of you.

Bachman – someone this country needs at a time when Obama and his goon squad want to take our freedoms away. The woman has every right to fear why Obama wants so much private information – what time do you leave for work, what time do you get home, what time do you use the bathroom, etc.

O.k. You are only a little unhinged. I have not seen the census for this year, but I am pretty darn sure that there are precisely ZERO quesitons about: “what time do you leave for work, what time do you get home, what time do you use the bathroom, etc.”. Furthermore, you actually believe that the census is “Obama gather ing information”? Really? How old ARE you? How STUPID are you? We have had more than one or two census’ in America over the years. We have had them when democrats were in office, and we have had them when republicans were in office. Apparently you are far too ignorant to realize this.

Looks like ACORN wants to be able to help themselves to what’s not theirs.

Oh, and there you go, jumping off the cliff into the great abyssmal vortex of WHAT THE F#CK ARE YOU TALKING ABOUT, YOU LUNATIC?

    I have the same fears.

Yes. We DO understand. You are frightened. You live in fear, and alwyas have. Likely you always will live in fear. You are a sad little creature. I do not pity you, as you create the very fear that drives your ideology, the fear that directs your actions and shapes your life is fear that you build willfully in your own mind. So, I do not have any pity or sympathy for you and your fear.

When I fill the census I will follow suit – only number of people in my household.

I don’t know the law. Some are suggesting that it is unlawful to do that. Perhaps you should not fill it out at all, becuause if you just put that number down, and it is unlawful to not fill the rest out, they can come and get you and arrest you and fine you. Then they will drag you off to the secret Obama-muslim-alien-gay-spanky-vegan-democrat rehabilitation sites and make you one of them. (Are you even MORE scared now?)

    You people better wake up.

ooohhhhh….. back to that fear that drives your sad little life and tells you what to do. be scared. Act out on your fear. Rational thought is elitist and that is a bad thing, even though you don’t know what it means, someone told you it was bad and that you need to be scared, and you lap it up like a good litle boy and ask, “may i have some more fear and lunatic fringe conspiracy theory please”.
