More than 200 people show up for bring-your-gun-to-church day.

Ken Pagano, the pastor of the New Bethel Church in Louisville, KY, recently invited his congregation to bring their unloaded firearms into the house of worship to “celebrate our rights as Americans!” Yesterday’s bring-your-gun-to-church day, to which more than 200 people showed up, also featured “a $1 raffle of a handgun, firearms safety lessons and a picnic.” Pagano reportedly thought up the event “after some church members expressed concern about members of President Barack Obama administration’s views on gun control, though the president hasn’t moved to put new restrictions on ownership.” Since Obama’s election, there has been a boom in gun sales, stoked largely by a multi-million dollar misinformation campaign by the National Rifle Association.

  48. CageyCretin says:

    Christianity and guns.

Well, of COURSE! Jesus HATED anyone who didn’t follow him. He was VERY CLEAR that ALL peole who did not step in line with his new and improved religion, with himself as the figurehead, were to be considered the enemy of all the true christians: such non-believers deserve NO compassion, No trust, No honesty, NO quarter, and they may be killed freely if the true christians believe that they are sinning against God… well, …against Jesus, who happens to BE the new and improved God (that old guy fellow just needs to sit back and let the “JC-man” run the show).

Jesus was also very clear that when he said stuff like “turn the other cheek” he REALLY meant that you should make a display of weakness to get your opponent off-guard, and when you turn your cheek back, you should have the latest and most deadly personal weaponry in hand so that you may smite down the enemies of Jesus. Elitism is the core principle of the teachings of Jesus. Elitism and the most modern weapons.

Nothing says “Love thy neighbor” like a semi-automatic rifle.

The meek shall inherit the earth, but the best armed followers of Jesus-God will rule the meek from thrones of great majesty (while 72 virgins are not mentioned, the upshot is a lot of vagueness in “promises of glory and eternal bliss” — as an aside, a circle divided into increments of 72 degrees will have 5 evenly spaced marks: the pentegram…. ooooohhhhh…. spooooky…..).

The diatribes of “Jesus The Great Destroyer, Hater of His Enemies, And Eather Of The Flesh Of Those His Followers Destroy In His Name” contain many intersting tidbits like those above.

…..otherwise, those gun-totin’ christians would be, well, not following the teachings of their professed religion.

  55. LibertyLover says:

There have been way too many people taking guns to church lately…

Wasn’t Dr. Tiller just recently killed at his church earlier this June?

    and

In March 2009, a gunman went to the First Baptist Church in Maryville, Il. He shot and killed the pastor with a .45-caliber gun.

    and

In November 2008, a gunman went to church in Clifton, NJ. He shot and killed his estranged wife and a fellow worshipper who tried to help her.

    and

In July 2008, a man with a grudge against liberals opened fire at a Unitarian Universalist Church in Knoxville, TN. He only killed two, but he wounded seven.

    and

In December 2007, a young man shot up a missionary training center near Denver and then went to the New Life Church in Colorado Springs where he killed four people before killing himself.

Bringing guns to church doesn’t sound like such a good idea to me even if they were unloaded.

  56. CageyCretin says:

well, come on guys, I mean who in their right minds actually want to be desiganted as “the meek”? Greed and meekness (or humility) are, basically, exclusionary. So, those who want all the material goods they can get certainly don’t want to be ‘the meek”, because, as they know all to well (by observing how they choose to act) the meek will be crushed by …. welll… everyone.

This brand of modern christians are filled with great overriding martyrdom complexes, though they don’t ACTUALLY want to BE martyrs in any sense whatsoever. Still, there’s always a “woe is me” or “woe is us” line that they have to tell — they percieve (in their delusions) that they are being oppressed somehow at all times: because THEN they fit the requirements of their dogma.

Same goes for them being “sinners’ : their dogma tells them that they MUST be “sinners”, because they are human, but also that they are forgiven their sins by “accepting Jesus into their lives”. Mind you, this “accepting” does not meant hat they have to actually try to NOT “sin”: that’s the great bonus: they can sin and sin, and at the end of the day all they have to do is “accept christ” and “ask for forgiveness, for they are weak human sinners” and all is forgiven. I mean, one hell of a racket, all in all.

  59. evangenital says:

Evangelicalism gives the whackos a pass for all their crimes, simply because these whackos have already accepted Jesus.

These people demonstrates that they know nothing about the Bible. When Peter did cut the ear of a roman soldier with his sword, Jesus cured the soldier and said to Peter something like “this isn’t the way my followers behave”.

Two lessons to be earned: true christians don’t ressort to violence, and they don’t make distinctions between christians and non-christians in this matter.

I see a “bring-your-sword-to-church Sunday” coming soon to the New Bethel Church in Louisville, KY.

The G-NOP’s must have stock holdings in gun manufacturers. They are always shouting that Democrats will take away Americans guns which always bolsters gun sales. That’s one way to boost the stock market. Ha!

Wednesdays were set aside for parishioners to practice their Kung-Fu moves.
Thursday is Ladies Day at the church…women are shown how to hide weapons in their girdles and Gucci glasses.
Friday is “Baseball Bats and Lead Pipes Day.”
Saturday is their day off. Church members are encouraged to wander about town photographing strangers and other suspicious people.
Sunday: Everyone practices with live ammunition.

Sunday night: One big happy sing-in.

The Scriptures have meant beautiful things to millions of people. The constitution is a world class document that has been the foundation for a fantastic country we call the United States. You put these writings into the hands of demigods and buffoons, and you can sway the uneducated with ease.

I think this problem can be blamed on the wonderful education these people obviously don’t have.

Yes I am. I was sworn to protect the Constittion of the United States when I joined th US Army and till hold to that sweets. Even if I have to protect it from citizens of the United States such as the minority but vocal socialist liberls trying to tear it down.

  114. flight says:

    Ghost Walker373,
Yes, times have changed. From my perspective, it is people of your persuasion who are changing the landscape of this country. Insecurity breeds paranoia, and it is running deep these days. Where is the country that was proud of its history? Where is the country that didn’t have to hide behind a gun? I guarantee you, the world is shaking its head and wondering what is happening to this great nation.

So go hide behind your guns. Fear every person who doesn’t look like you or talk like you.

Your condition can be labeled pathetic!

  115. DREW_R says:

This is sad. Leftwing Liberal Idiots vs Rghtwing dips&*ts. None of which live by what America was based on. Indepenence- which no longer exisists in most, no you have to depend upon your government to support you thus making it stronger and something to be feared. Honor-There is very little left in either extreme.

Instead we have in ther place dishonesty, back stabbing and thieves running our gov and a vocal minoriy duped into supporing it. That’s all any of either extreme are.

  116. pete says:

I am a life long gun owner, hunter, and shooting enthusiast. I support the rights of responsible gun ownership.

That being said, we desperately need new federal controls on the casual ownership of deadly weapons. We also need a national registry of violent criminals and mental patients.

Then we need to rationally discuss raising the standard for gun ownership to match a typical “conceal/carry” permit. We need to consider tighter control of “military style” high firepower volume weapons. And we need to eliminate unlicensed sales.

All of those things can be done without violating any part of the Constitution and would serve public safety. When Mexican gangsters are coming here to buy their weapons we have something seriously effed up.

  117. pete says:

I might also add that a person of real Faith, in man or God, doesn’t feel a need to bring a gun to church. I find the two ideas to be mutually contradictory. Plus armed people on “missions from God” tend to run up alarming body counts.

  118. flight says:

    Pete,
You stated a your perspective perfectly!!!!!!

  119. flight says:

    Ghost Walker373
Your argument is a perversion of reality. If you really where interested in right to life issues, then yes abortion is wrong, but so is the unregulated sale of firearms.
Consider the fact that the United States has the highest firearm homicides rates in the western world. The victims of these homicides are not always the bad guy. Consider the flow of firearms into the Mexico drug cartel and the human misery as a result.

You have a perverted perspective of right to life, and I am calling you on it!

  120. ElBruce says:

Unloaded guns are useless. All arguments regarding the right to bear arms are rendered completely moot if the arms in question aren’t loaded. “I have a constitutional right to carry this useless hunk of metal around!” Nah, I don’t think so. Call me back when they’ve got the guts to invite everyone to come into their church with a loaded gun.

    .

    Ghost Walker373 Says:

Jesus said to love your enemy as your brother and to pray for him, but i don’t see where he said we could not defend ourselves…

    Matthew 5:39:

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Eye for eye, and tooth for tooth.’
But I tell you, Do not resist an evil person. If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also.
And if someone wants to sue you and take your tunic, let him have your cloak as well.
If someone forces you to go one mile, go with him two miles.

I think that’s a pretty clear prohibition against defending yourself.

I’m not a churchgoer, and it took me fifteen seconds to find that passage. I would think that observant Christians would have at least some idea what they were talking about when they talk about their religion. And yet I am continually disapponited.

    .

    Ghost Walker373 Says:

…but it is ok to kill a unborn baby??

There’s no such thing as an unborn baby.

    DREW_R Says:

This is sad. Leftwing Liberal Idiots vs Rghtwing dips&*ts.

What’s even sadder is equating the sane people with the crazy ones to try to spread the blame around. Nope, the right-wingers are provably in the wrong in this case as well as all other currently controversial issues. Waving your hands about how “everybody’s a bunch of idiots” isn’t fooling anyone here. The last time your argument was popular, it gave Nader almost 5% of the popular vote.

  121. smidget says:

Wow, GhostWalker really thinks he knows what he’s talking about. Too bad the facts don’t support his assertions. Numbers don’t lie, bro. Guns don’t save lives, they take lives. Taking that life may prevent another from losing theirs, provided the person you shot also had a gun, in which case the gun is STILL the problem.

Quick aside – you only go down for two counts of homicide if the pregnant woman you killed was far enough along. A fetus only has legal rights when it has been deemed viable, most frequently at 24 weeks. If the woman was 23 weeks along, it’s one count, not two. So your argument is only valid in the 3rd trimester, and late-term abortions aren’t legal unless they are deemed medically necessary, and even then they are only legal in 3 states. I welcome you to try again, because that argument failed, just like it has failed for years.

    But all that aside.

Okay, I want everyone on this thread to know that these people are way out there crazy, even by Kentucky standards (I know, I’ve lived in Kentucky for 24 of my 25 years). I live in an area that is ridiculously redneck, and everyone I have spoken to about this has said basically the same thing: (paraphrased) “That is an incredibly un-Christian, irresponsible, and stupid thing to endorse.” This took place in Louisville, primarily Democratic with a population of 1.2 million, meaning that .0167% of the population showed up. In other words: We’re not all this stupid and crazy, and please try to not think that we are. We have some stupid and crazy people (like those “Creationist Museum” fools), just like everywhere else, but they are in the minority.

Some quick facts about Kentucky, because many people on this thread seem to think they know what they’re talking about, but clearly don’t. It’s somewhat lengthy, so if you already know about Kentucky, feel free to skip it, but most of you need to read it.

Firstly, Kentucky is not a state, it is a Commonwealth (one of four – VA, PA, and MA), and as such is structured differently than the states.

57% of the population are registered as Democrats, compared to 36.5% Republican. Democrats have run the state government for decades. Since 1851, we have had 43 Democratic governors and 8 Repub governors, 2 of which had Democratic lt. governors, and 1 Know-Nothing way back in 1855. The General Assembly is split in party leadership, with the Senate seating 21:15:1, R:D:I, and the House seating 65:35 D:R.

Adding to the interesting political mix, Kentucky usually votes Democratic on a state level, and usually votes Republican on a federal level. The primary reason for this is unknown, but is likely related to states rights and a pervasive distrust of the federal government (we’ve been burned more than once by the feds, so it’s not surprising, or even irrational).

46.5% of Kentuckians are not affiliated with any church or denomination (the largest segment of the population, with evangelicals coming in second with just over 30%), but the state is home to at least 13 religiously-tied colleges or seminaries, all of which are private and are in addition to the 8 public universities and 16 two-year colleges.

Kentucky was never part of the Confederacy. We were neutral for the bulk of the conflict, until in 1861 when the Confederate forces were forced to withdraw from Kentucky by the order of the General assembly and allegiance to the Union was declared. Even then, however, Kentucky was split. The phrase “brother against brother” has roots in here. Although I wish we had been pro-Union the entire time, it is rather fitting that we were neutral, considering that both Abe Lincoln and Jefferson Davis were from Kentucky, which only serves to show the division among the people in the state. There was a brief and poorly-executed attempt at a small Confederate shadow government, but the result was inconsequential.

    Tidbits of interest:
-Kentucky has more navigable miles of waterway than any other state in the US save Alaska, is home to the largest artificial lake in the country, and has more than 90,000 miles of streams.
-Kentucky has 134 protected wildlife areas, including national and state parts, wildlife reserves, and and national forests, one of which is the largest in the country.
-Kentucky has the longest natural cave system in the world – Mammoth Cave.
-Kentucky has reintroduced elk and wild turkey, taking the state populations of the animals from extinct for decades to the largest population of the animals east of the Mississippi.
-Kentucky has more farms per mile than any other US state.
-Kentuckians love football, and really love basketball. If Billy Donovan ran for President, he’d win Kentucky by a landslide (only half-joking).

It’s a lovely state, and the people are sooooooo nice. I’ve known a lot of people who couldn’t wait to get out of our little town…and then couldn’t wait to move back. If you like the outdoors and nature, you’d love Kentucky. Plus we make better bourbon than anyone else. Period. Also, we grow incredible pot…..so I’m told. ;)

  122. Mark701 says:

Urged them the bring their “unloaded guns”? Isn’t that a bit hypocritical inasmuch as unloaded guns don’t hurt people, only the loaded ones do. The good pastor, obviously recognized, on some level, the danger of having a bunch of loaded guns around and wanted nothing to do with it, yet was simultaneoulsy celibrating the glories of gun ownership. What a dope.

  123. jrfunkenstein says:

‘Yes, of course! The Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch! ‘Tis one of the sacred relics Brother Maynard carries with him.’

  124. jrfunkenstein says:

‘guns do save lives or the cops would not carry them’

    Wow, ignorance really is bliss.

I suppose wars support peace, racism supports equality and madness supports sanity?
