Beck Falsely States The U.S. Bought Alaska In The ‘1950s’ So We Could Drill

While appearing on Fox & Friends this morning, Glenn Beck managed to make a trio of mistakes when he attacked the Waxman-Markey clean energy bill passed by the House last week. The Fox News pundit falsely asserted the legislation’s effect on our oil dependency would be “none.” Beck then pointed out, incorrectly, that the U.S. purchased Alaska in the “1950s” and that we did so because of our interest in its “resources,” a subtle way of advocating for more drilling in Alaska:

CARLSON: But nowhere in that bill is anything about reducing our dependence on foreign oil.

BECK: None. […]

You know Donald Trump, I want to talk to this guy. When he was on the show just a few minutes ago I was thinking how can you not be laughing at us? How can the world not be laughing at us? We have all these resources. Why did we buy Alaska in the 1950s? We bought Alaska for the resources. And now we say no!

Watch it:

During his weekly address on Saturday, President Obama specifically focused on how the legislation would help lift “our dependence on foreign oil.” Obama said the bill would “spur the development of low carbon sources of energy,” which includes wind, solar, and geothermal power. He added the bill would result in “new energy savings like the efficient windows,” thereby reducing “heating costs in the winter and cooling costs in the summer.”

Beck’s attempt to rewrite history to fit his talking point is also troubling. For clarification, Alaska was purchased in 1867 for $7.2 million and soon became known as “Seward’s Folly,” named for Secretary of State William H. Seward, because at the time it was widely regarded as foolish to spend so much money on remote tundra. (Perhaps Beck was thinking of Alaska becoming the 49th state in 1959.) The resources the U.S. was after in 1867 weren’t oil, but fish, furs, and the prospect of closer proximity to Russia from the North American continent.

    “Glenn Beck’s Education
Glenn overcame a difficult childhood but ultimately graduated from high school in Bellingham, Washington in 1982. Though he graduated, Glenn himself admits that he “spent more time in the parking lot than in class.” Glenn never attended college. He became an alcoholic. While recovering from his alcoholism, Beck became a self-taught genius. He put books in every room so he could become well learned. And he didn’t just read like you or I do. No, no. He read books that contradicted each other. In doing so, Glenn Beck became a well balanced juggernaut of knowledge.”

His HS should revoke his diploma. Bellingham is practically on the Canadian border, Washington is the closet state to Alaska. There is fair amount of news coverage of Alaska, particularly jobs, oil, the environment, in the Washington press.
There’s no way anyone raised in Washington would be so stupid to think Alaska was purchased from the Soviets in the 1950s.

Everywhere one looks these days, there are nothing but black
faces staring back from TV, websites, advertisements junkmail. You name it, there’s a black face on it. Even children’s cartoons in predominantly white areas are now featuring hastily constructed black characters. Seemingly overnight, the socialist liberal traitors have succeeded where blacks did not – they have marginalized and trivialized whitey.

How did this happen? The largest population group in the United States of America has lost it’s spine. Yes, white people in America no longer have a single spine between the entire lot of them. They have allowed the media and public schools to hammer them into submission with politically correct indoctrination of themselves and their children. Did they protest, fight or object? No, they caved in without even a whimper. Sticks and stones, Whitey. Had Whitey taken to the blogs with any shred of courage, CNN, CBS, MSNBC and ABC might well be going under instead of the venerable newspapers who are vanishing at the rate of one per week.
The millions who sacrificed their lives to build America are
spinning in their graves. What a disgrace. Being an American used to mean something, something special. It symbolized the strong, the brave, the indomitable force that nothing could withstand. They were revered the world over for their freedoms, their minimally corrupt government, and their
penchant for taking on the impossible with inevitable success. Everyone on the planet wanted to be an American.
Today, Americans are scorned, laughed at, thought of as fools. How did it come to this? The reasons are many, most unspoken for fear of peer criticism. Free speech, one of the most important rights of the American citizen, has been effectively neutered by the American media. It didn’t have to be that way, not in a capitalist society. If Americans cared, they could bend the media like a reed in the wind by expressing their discontent with media sponsors. A little sacrifice here and there, a little time, and not spending their money with those sponsors could put them both on their heels in less than a year. Americans simply don’t have the discipline to see something like that through. Most modern day Americans are weak and cowardly. They have more interest in fag or freak shows on television than their own person.
Free America is over. Corporate America, liberals, and a now
highly corrupt federal government have sold the entire country into slavery for 100 years. Americans stood by and watched it happen.

    Shame on all of you

Yeah. He’s a clown. But a dangerous one,

  114. Roark says:

All of these attacks on Beck and all things right wing really are laughable. It’s pure rhetoric. Why do you care if he said the wrong period in time? Does it matter if he said 1950, 1850, or 750? No!

What does matter is the ramifications of this bill, which are conspicuously missing from this post. Is it perhaps because no one here has thought about it? There are several reasons to be against this Waxman Markey Climate bill, regardless of your political affiliation.

1.) This will cause energy prices, and by default prices on all commodities, to rise (relatively speaking of course). The CBO, the EPA, The George C. Marshall Institute and the Heritage Foundation have all done studies on the effects of this legislation. All four of them predict that by 2015 the average cost per household for energy will increase, on the low end, by $110/yr. and on the high end by approx. $1500/yr. I would suspect that it will probably end up somewhere in the middle. And if you are one of the unlucky people who happen to heat your home with natural gas your energy costs will increase even more.

The reason this is bad is because it hurts the poor to a greater degree than it does the rich. For example, the poor generally spend close to 100% of their income on fixed expenses (food, housing, energy, etc.). If we raise the price of one of those fixed expenses, especially during a time when wages are declining/stagnant, it will cause the poor to suffer.

2.) Due to increased cost of doing business we WILL lose jobs to overseas competitors. This will cost us blue collar jobs and increase the trade deficit. That is not to mention the fact that no discernible value is being created through this. It is self evident then, that, relatively speaking, enacting this piece of legislation will cause greater inefficiency.

3.) And lastly, for all of you who think all of the repercussions are worth it to fight “climate change.”
The effects of this bill will be a net increase in carbon emissions. What do you think happens when manufacturing is pushed overseas to less advanced countries. They use their energy inefficient methods of productions to produce the same amount(or greater) goods.

Oh, and one last thing. Mark my words. When gas/energy prices increase in a few years do to this, all of you liberals will be pissing and moaning that the gas companies are “price gouging” and pushing up the cost of energy. When you start doing that, remember this piece of legislation.

My first 10 years in business was spent in oil and mineral exploration. Those of us in the 70’s knew the enormous wealth of oil within own country. Having a history in the business, I know the dangers of transporting oil and the safety in developing our own reserves. No nation on earth has the safety standards for exploring and extracting oil as the U.S. Transporting oil by tanker either on land or sea is a disaster waiting to happen and does so all the time. During Katrina, not one drop of oil was spilled by the over 4000 platforms in the Caribbean which were directly located in the path of the storm. To walk on one of these rigs and to see the capabilities is quite an experience. For the past 10 years I have invested in companies producing ethanol and wind energies. I know today the ethanol is an environmental disaster as well as an economical one. Wind is extremely expensive. Developing Nuclear and our own oil reserves would guarantee energy independence, cheap energy, the ability to continue on the path to a cleaner environment, and produce an enormous wealth in new and continuing jobs. To believe that our scientific institutions will produce a new “Magic and Renewable fuel” is a dream, not reality.

A very sound opinion, one which I agree 100 percent. If “progressive” minded people really cared about the environment they wouldn’t stand in the way of nuclear power. Instead of “progressives” crying about how we interfere with countries and go to war over oil, we could produce our own and be self sufficient. But what would they have to complain about then?

Nuclear power is fine. It’s the waste that would be a bother. Then there’s that whole “meltdown” concern.

I have no qualms about it, but I just want to see it produced efficiently. Hell, if we could understand that increasing efficiency in fossil fuels would help immensely and cap pollutants, I wouldn’t complain all that much in the first place.

You bring up excellent points. First we do have a waste problem in nuclear power. Currently, most facilities are storing depleted material onsite which they are not capable of doing. This is not the power company’s fault but is a problem that both Dem’s and Rep’s won’t address. Out west we have developed waste storage in formations that haven’t changed in millions of years. We have the scientific brain power in this country to develop, transport safely, and store nuclear waste. New technologies have also been developed over the years where nuclear material can be depleted up to 90 %. Politicians on both sides for some reason won’t address this issue. And the storage at current nuclear facilities is a disaster that is waiting and will happen. Just like Katrina, they don’t fix broken policies until disaster.

The fossil fuel question is still there. But the auto industry the primary pollutant (just because of sheer numbers) has cleaned up their act tremendously over the past 20 years. Electric cars are real as is the possibility for Hydrogen which is currently in test in California.

Yes, I’m so dishonest. Spend a few bucks go to New Orleans and watch the Imax presentation “Hurricane on the Bayou”. I’m sure this wasn’t written by some right wing environmentalist. Sorry you haven’t cured the anger yet. The department of interior commissioned a study on the performance of offshore platforms in the gulf after the storm. Read the facts jack! If you had read my blogs instead blowing your anger I stressed the danger of transporting oil! I forgot to mention the dangers in storing oil as well which is another reason you can call me every name in the book. Katrina destroyed the very infrastructure of New Orleans including oil storage utilities and pipelines. Oil spills were caused by destruction of these facilities. Unfortunately just as other major infrastructures, these were also not prepared to handle this destructive storm.
