Coleman concedes to Sen. Al Franken.

By Amanda Terkel on Jun 30th, 2009 at 4:25 pm

Coleman concedes to Sen. Al Franken.

Republican Norm Coleman conceded the 2008 election to Sen. Al Franken (D-MN) today. “It’s over,” Coleman said at a press conference in Minnesota, adding that he had called and congratulated Franken. Watch it:

President Obama issued a statement reading, “I look forward to working with Senator-Elect Franken to build a new foundation for growth and prosperity by lowering health care costs and investing in the kind of clean energy jobs and industries that will help America lead in the 21st century.”

No more excuses from any Dem claiming we need sixty votes to move forward. Any Dem that sides with republicans and filibusters legislation should be thrown out of office.

I don’t suppose you’d care to list specific instances of President Obama’s “thuggery” or support your name-calling with any justification? (and no — merely being from Chicago doesn’t make somebody a thug)

    No?

    Thought not.

You just like to call the President names for the sake of calling him names. Kind of like the seven-year old kid who likes to call his little sister “retarded” just because he likes the way the word sounds.

But seriously — if that’s all you have to contribute here, would you mind terribly going and doing it somewhere else? You’ve gone beyond tiresome.

  32. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

After the political assassination of progressive Senator Paul Wellstone (D – Minn) in 2002, the door was open for the Republican criminal regime to seize control of the US Senate. And so it was done, with electronically rigged election thefts in Georgia and Minnesota. So Norm Coleman never was an honestly-elected representative of the citizens of Minnesota.

“The implications of this Senate Race are particularly significant because the Democrats will now have 60 votes in the Senate. With their supermajority the era of finger pointing and excuses is now over. With just 59 votes, Senate Democrats in recent months have passed trillion dollar spening bills, drive up America’s debt, made every American taxpayer a shareholder in the Auto Industryand now want Washington to take over America’s health care system. Its troubling to think about what they might now accomplish with 60 votes.” John Coryn (GNOP) TX.

or spineless demos that hide in a corner every time they see a repub coming.

all the repubs have to yell is we dont like that and the demos shutter in fear

give the repubs credit they control the demos lock stock and barrel.

this country is run by corp facists with their high paid lobbyists

oh to watch the self destruction of a republic due to capitalism left unchecked ie not pretty but predictable

“Advocates of capitalism are very apt to appeal to the sacred principles of liberty which are embodied in one maxim: the fortunate must not be restrained in the exercise of tyranny over the unfortunate” Bertrand Russell.

  51. Chris LeJeune says:

So, if I understand correctly, this means three things.

    1. The vote on the public option cannot be stalled unless a democrat openly supports a filibuster. So, all we need is 51 votes and the public option passes.

    2. The same can be said for the confirmation of Sotomayer. Without one dem on their side, the repubs cannot filibuster her confirmation. Hence, 51 votes and she’s in.

    3. EFCA and ACES should sail right on through – no problem.

Today is a bad day to be a republican.

That is the change in American politics GOPsby. The voters aren’t keeping their opinions to themselves anymore.

We the people have discovered the Internet and we are pissed. We are witnessing the rise of Internet based Democracy.

  64. pete says:

I admit that I’m an unusually patient person. I tend to take a long range view of things and I think there’s lots of room to celebrate.

Yesterday saw what could be called the biggest symbolic date of the Iraq occupation when we, finally, ceased offensive patrols. That would have been my decision the day we realized there were no WMD. It’s taken 6 years, two elections, and uncounted dead for our elected leaders to try that course of action.

Today we see the last victory of the ‘08 election. The symbolic number 60 is, I think, secondary to the manner in which the whole fiasco went down. Despite all the wailing and gnashing of teeth, despite all the lies and innuendo from the Reichwhiners, Senator Franken won an unquestionable victory by unanimous decision of a bipartisan court. And that’s over and above the most careful and thoroughly moderated recount in American history.

Up to now, all the obstruction of the GOoPers has netted them nothing. It’s just served to reinforce their growing image as a bunch of spoiled children. We may want bolder action on some issues but we can’t lose site of the real changes that have already happened.

There’s been a lot of criticism for the approach Obama and the Congressional Dems on some issues. Much of that is justified. But, I continue to remain hopeful that they will continue to tackle emergencies in real time and work on sweeping measures in their “off hours”. It would be a shame if all the gains were jeopardized by impatience.

It just hit me how significant this is politically.

How long has it been since either Democrats or Republicans have had such a small minority that they could not filibuster?

The Republican Party has achieved a threshold in irrelevance that has not been seen in a long time. As Republicans lose more and more seats, they will become more desperate and dangerous.

We can expect violence from the fascist Republican Party as they continue to lose power.

His Administration wasn’t a golden age but it was pretty good. He did less damage than T-Paw no matter how you look at it.

As for Senator Franken, I think that his books and additional body of intellectual property is pretty compelling. I know that intellectualism is a contagion to be avoided by GOoPers but I always rate sheer intellectual capacity first when I consider any candidate. Personally, I have no qualms about Senator Franken’s ability to learn and comprehend everything that he has to.
