Steele: Democrats ‘basically hijack elections at their whim.’

On his radio show last night, Hugh Hewitt asked RNC Chairman Michael Steele what he planned “to do to prevent strategic chicanery” of Democrats voting in open Republican primaries in 2012. Misunderstanding the question, Steele replied that he agreed with Hewitt that election fraud was a “frightening concern” because he believes that Democrats can now “basically hijack elections at their whim”:

HEWITT: What are you going to do to prevent strategic chicanery of the sort that you and I both know MoveOn.org and Code Pink and the rest of them are very capable of doing?

STEELE: Well, you know, I think you raise a very important and frightening concern here, and that is the Democrats have spent the last six to eight years building in place an infrastructure to allow them to basically hijack elections at their whim.

Listen here:

Steele claimed that Democratic secretaries of states are working with ACORN in a way “that basically land locks these elections in such a way that they basically walk out of the election with the votes that they need.” He added that “they have activities by groups like an ACORN, or individuals like George Soros through their funding, to help them augment the taking of these elections.”

Transcript:

HEWITT: Now Chairman Steele, I want to turn and look ahead to early 2012. Obviously, it’s three years away, it’s a long way away. But a lot of my listeners and I am worried the Democrats will flood Republican caucuses in Iowa and the Republican primary in New Hampshire, or any other early primary in which we do not restrict the vote to Republicans. What are you going to do to prevent strategic chicanery of the sort that you and I both know MoveOn.org and Code Pink and the rest of them are very capable of doing?

STEELE: Well, you know, I think you raise a very important and frightening concern here, and that is the Democrats have spent the last six to eight years building in place an infrastructure to allow them to basically hijack elections at their whim. They started by focusing on targeting secretary of state races around the country. They’ve got a majority of those. And now when you have an ACORN situation flare up, what do you have, the secretary of state going well, there’s no problem here. I don’t understand why everybody’s all upset. Well, yeah, you’re part of a growing process that basically land locks these elections in such a way that they basically walk out of the election with the votes that they need. And the activity by groups like ACORN goes unnoticed. What I’ve started to do is focus our counsel, focus our legal opportunities around the country on exactly those behaviors, and we’re putting in place a strategy now to be competitive, shall we say, when it comes to protecting the rights of voters out there, and the process itself, protecting our candidates so we don’t have more Norm Coleman situations where votes are counted one way in one part of the state, and counted another way in another part, or they have activities by groups like an ACORN, or individuals like George Soros through their funding, to help them augment the taking of these elections.

I believe ‘hijack’ is not the word Steele was looking for. I think he meant to say “the Democrats have spent the last six to eight years building in place an infrastructure to allow them to basically ‘mobilize voters by letting them know which candidate more aligns with their stance on political issues” at their whim.” It’s okay Michael, we know you didn’t have access to children’s books in college to help you improve your english.

  13. Another Joe says:

Typical repug strategy – vociferously proclaim someone else is stealing elections while working diligently to disenfranchise voters, illegally strike hundreds of thousands from voter rolls (targeting by race), undermine the FEC and election laws, and gaming voting systems to manufacture fraudulent outcomes when the previous 3 strategies cited don’t work.

When repugs make noise about something, it is really a confession of what they are up to.

Unfortunately, the same media that told us chimpy “won” and we needed to “get over it” will now give this propaganda a great deal of coverate, but they will ignore ongoing repug efforts to steal elections.

  14. stefan says:

“Democrats have … an infrastructure to … hijack elections at their whim.”

It’s true! And I’m going share the deep, dark secret: it’s called “getting more votes than the other guy”. But don’t tell any Republicans or we’re toast!

Having lived in Ohio in 2004 when Republican Secretary of State Ken Blackwell made sure the urban precincts didn’t have enough voting machines Looney Toon Steele’s paranoid ravings make me smile.

As for Hewitt’s question, I don’t think he has to worry about liberals voting in Republican primaries. After all, the idea is to try to throw the election to a weaker nominee. That assumes your party actually has a stronger candidate who the voters might take seriously. With the collection of mossbacks, hunchbacks and retreads testing the waters on the Republican side right now I can’t imagine who we would be trying to stop.

Wow, it truly is amazing how dilusional they are.

No a matter of whether they believe what they say, this is about “catapulting the propaganda” by aggressively attacking others for the actions that they are intensively working on.

Remember, without open, free, and verifiable elections, they don’t need majority support – they just have to justify the outcomes. This is just another way to create the lie of a “highly energized base” that “votes” in impossible numbers to swing elections.

And after the theft, the media will not question the integrity of the outcome – they will just talk about the “highly energized base”.

  19. WaltB says:

I think he forgot that it’s the Republican Party that has a better history of doing just that. Dem’s can’t get it together like the party of lemmings.

  20. shoeless says:

Really, registering Micky Mouse did not throw the election. When he showed up to vote, the poll workers recognized him right away and just gave him a cartoon ballot, so his write in vote for Goofy didn’t count.

  21. Daddy-O says:

Actually…in the runup to the 2004 Election, I wrote nonstop begging any techie liberals, progressives or Democrats to come up with a plan to steal the Presidency BACK…

It didn’t work, as we all know too well. And it was no satisfaction knowing Bush’s second term was the one where it all blew up. None whatsoever.

Steele should consider that the Republican party is welcome to go into urban neighborhoods and try to register voters to compete with Acorn. See how that works out for the Republicans.

  37. shoeless says:

2000- 10,000 Jews in West Palm Beach vote for neo-Nazi Pat Buchannon.

2004- 250,000 people who cast ballots for a liberal black woman for Ohio Supreme Court also vote for George W. Bush.

Nothing to see there. Move along folks.

  38. misscoleopteramolly says:

I see Steele has the proper talking points down pat. The GOP rebuttal to virtually everything is “but…but…but…ACORN!” or “but…but…but…GEORGE SOROS!”

Steele hasn’t explained yet (nor has anybody else) how ACORN has ever perpetuated actual voter fraud. All we know about ACORN’s alleged “voter fraud” is that some of the ACORN workers turned in some obviously phony voter registrations, which ACORN was required to submit by law. However, to make things a little easier for the election registration people, ACORN segregated the obvious phonies and submitted them with a note saying something along the lines of “we believe these may be fraudulent”. There has been no recorded instance of any of these non-existent people on the phony registrations actually showing up to cast a vote illegally.

Steele would have us believe that ACORN’s stack of phony registration forms have resulted in stolen elections that secretaries of state have given a wink and a nod to. He’s going to have to do better than that. For instance, we need to have some specific examples of people who have actually voted illegally. Besides Ann Coulter.

    Watchdog:

In 56 of Ohio’s 88 counties, ballots and election records from 2004 have been “accidentally” destroyed, despite a federal order to preserve them — it was crucial evidence which would have revealed whether the election was stolen.

  41. jbrantow says:

Wasn’t it buttplug limbaugh that urged his wingnut listeners to switch parties during primaries to vote for hillary clinton? And Steele like everyother GOPer will come up with any excuse to rationalize why they keep losing……Unless they cheat,(remember Ohio elections and ken blackwell or rigged voting machines) the rethugs cannot win because they are terrible at being politicians. They are Losers.

  42. misscoleopteramolly says:

Really, Mike — if we truly had the power to hijack elections at our whim, why in the world would we leave enough Republicans in office to obstruct our dream of a permanent majority and world domination?

  49. pete says:

And I see that some of us are continuing the mistake we made with Chimpy. Chimpy had a habit of saying things that made us feel good while doing things that were criminal.

With Obama, we apply the same trick with a different set of filters. In this case we see alarm over the implication of words that sound like Chimpy when the actual legislation or executive orders clearly reverse the mistakes of Chimpy.

The prisoners that Obama inherited from his predecessor might be the most dangerous crisis of the bunch. And, considering that the Democratic party would lose all it has gained if one prisoner is released and then carries out a horrific attack, it would be stupid in the extreme to act rashly. Plus? The fact of the matter is that cases are being slowly adjudicated and more releases seem to be on the way.

If one wishes to interpret Obama’s actions as “an insane power grab”? I can’t stop you. But, I don’t have to share that interpretation.
