Bolton knows exactly what he is doing. He wants to try and push Obama around by using public opinion and Congress to force Obama’s hand on foreign policy. The neocons are setting themselves up to claim Obama is soft on security and defense. Bolton will continue stirring the pot to make it difficult for Obama and Clinton. His statements should not make their way into the mainstream media since the only purpose is to second guess Obama. Let Fox give him a soap box and he can talk to the radical right.

Using any force against Iran at all right now would absolutely have the opposite effects what would be intended (of more compliant Iran). It would galvanize the Iranian nation (not a small nation, incidentally) and cause a near-holocaust in the Middle East.
Mr. Bolton does not understand that life is not a Rambo movie, and he does not understand that invading Iraq didn’t exactly work out like we thought it would either.

The dynamics of the Middle East are such that the oil rich Arab states do not want to see a nuclear Iran. Privately, they would like to see a strike by Israel or the US. The oil rich states do not want to be in the shadow of a nuclear Iran because it would diminish the power of Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait and the UAE. These states will not openly advocate a strike but they will not impede one or denounce a strike if it happens. Bolton’s comments only complicate the diplomatic efforts of the UN and EU. I prefer to see both organizations hang themselves with inaction. The US should not give Iran the opportunity to blame the US like the current situation. Obama is playing this perfect by saying less. That does not mean Obama is doing nothing. His trip to the Middle East was for consultations on Iran. I am sure the Arab states have laid out a framework for the US and Israel taking unilateral action against Iran. However, I think Iran has bigger internal problems at this time which need to play out.

I agree. But if one nuke hits Israel they are gone and a lot of Palestinians also. Even if Israel retaliates, let’s hope to god they can shoot down the incoming nuke. They only get one chance.
So I think it is all a moot point because Israel will strike long before anyone else does. It’s their existence.
And unfortunately if that happens we will be drawn into the conflict. I don’t advocate bombing Iran (except the bastards who sneak adavnced directed IEDs into Iraq that kills our troops), but Israel has their very existance at stake.
I don’t agree with Bolton making open public statements like he did. But it pisses me off that we as Americans can be so naive as to think Iran and even North Korea won’t bleed us to death. The only good hope is that Iran knows that Israel will strike unilaterally so maybe they will tone down their rhetoric and theats.
