Media Outlet Refuses To Run Republican TV Ad Filled With Misrepresentations Of Clean Energy Bill

This afternoon, Roanoke television station WDBJ-TV, announced they will be refusing to air a National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC) ad attacking freshman Rep. Tom Perriello (D-VA), citing factual inaccuracies. The NRCC had been planning to run television ads against Democratic members of Congress, like Perriello, who voted for the Waxman-Markey clean energy economy legislation that passed last week. After receiving information about the factual inaccuracies in the ad, the station pulled it from rotation.

For any objective observer, the the ad is pulled out of thin air. The ads erroneously state that the bill will “destroy jobs” and “cost middle-class families $1,800 a year.” According to a study by the Center for American Progress, clean energy economy legislation will create 1.7 million American jobs while simultaneously addressing climate change by capping carbon dioxide emissions. The $1,800 figure used by NRCC is also made of whole cloth. The Congressional Budget Office has scored the bill and found that by 2020, the annual cost would be about $175 per household — about a postage stamp a day. An EPA estimate of the bill found similar results, projecting the cost to be about $80 to $111 per a year.

Still refusing to accept reality, the Republican leadership is instructing its members to lie about the clean energy economy bill:

– Last week, Republican whip Rep. Eric Cantor (R-VA) posted a message erroneously claiming that clean energy legislation will amount to “a national energy tax of up to $3,100 on all Americans.”

– Republican leader Rep. John Boehner (R-OH) posted on his website that the clean energy bill will cost “$3,100 a year,” then modified that number to “$3,000 per household per year.”

– Republican conference chair Rep. Mike Pence (R-IN), not to be outdone, claimed the clean energy bill would be “over $4,000 a year.”

All the numbers cited by Republicans are at least seventeen times the highest possible projection by the CBO and EPA.

Clearly, Republicans opposed to the clean energy bill seem willing to justify their opposition using outright falsehoods. But fortunately, at least some stations are not willing to propagate it.

So, Republicans will tell lies to help pad the pockets of their rich, corporate friends at the expense of regular, everyday Americans? Gee, what a surprise.

Just think… if EVERY media outlet had the guts to do the right thing, there would be no Republicans on the air AT ALL.

Which, to my mind, would be a very good thing for America.

The Republicans may be running up against a big wall, and it’s called honesty.

Republicans can count on FOX to be a moth piece but when you expect the rest of the media to be a Republican moth piece, expect a little resistance.
It looks like the winds are shifting and they are not in the Republicans’ direction.

Well only the conservative media, Fox News, went to court to be allowed to spew lies.

  12. dbadass says:

Why do I get the feeling that our young friend doesn’t really wanna have a nice little chat?…

  13. Mathazar says:

Destroy jobs ? That’s funny, two days ago, on the News hour with Jim Lehrer, they did a story on all the young men in Oklahoma abandoning jobs in the oil industry in favour of training to work on wind turbines. Seems there’s a big future and plenty of high paying jobs in wind power. There’s also a
huge potential for solar power in the southwest.

Naturally, the wingnuts think bombing mountaintops is the future.

Congratulations and thank you, WDBJ-TV. May you serve as a beacon among your peers. Refusing to broadcast partisan lies is a bold stand in this era.

It’s long past time to end the pretense that BS deserves serious coverage in all media.

  18. evangenital says:

Was the ad put together by FoxNews? It’s the sort of stock-in-trade crap for which they are well known.

Repiggies will lie about anything. Sometimes, they will lie to their own detriment, just because it is a natural reflex for them when confronted with the truth.

  19. realpatriot says:

It’s amazing to me how the republicans always talk about if regulations are placed on businesses, jobs will be lost. Then they ignore the fact that over the last 30 years their party pushed, and got legislation that gave businesses tax breaks if they outsourced their efforts to china, mexico and india, viet nam, etc etc…thus losing American jobs. Ofcourse Democrats legislators are just as guilty….
    Do you remember the Americans?

  20. WaltinTexas says:

The Young Republican = typical moronic rt-wing lemming. The only people that believe that “liberal media” crap are idiots that will believe anything Limpy Limbaugh and all the rest of the Reich-wing propagandist’s say. It says they refused to air the ad because it’s a bunch of LIES. Please, don’t let those pesky facts get in the way of your opinions.

  21. pete says:

    Tim Vaculik,

We seldom agree on much but I try to give credit because you sometimes engage in topical discussion. I have to ask though, aren’t you embarrassed by the endless stream of sockpuppets? Doesn’t the sheer ignorance and idiocy make you cringe?

    Now, to the topic.

Not that I care tremendously (although a little voice in my head says I should) this trend with the media is quite disturbing.

Which trend you ask? I’m talking about the trend AWAY from journalism, objectivity, balance and godd old-fashioned reporting!

Since when has the media been annointed arbiters of OPINION? What are political advertisements anyway if not major statements of OPINION, regardless if its left, center or right?

What the h@#* is happening here???

  63. hormiga brava chavez says:

The Republican Party has been on a roll – all the way to disaster! Thank goodness more people are seeing through all their lies.

  71. pete says:

But, Timmeh. A unsolicited paid advertisement is not news. It would be wrong for the station to turn down interviews but they are obligated, or they should be, to impose a certain standard of truth on paid ads.

This ad contained items that are demonstrably untrue. I don’t care who commissions it, I expect public broadcasters to pull such ads, just like if they claimed laying down in traffic cures cancer.

  72. the great GOPsby says:

if you get paid to work, you already have a green job. what liberals are doing is reinventing the wheel. republicans invented the green jobs hundreds of years ago. the more green you take to the bank, the greener your job.

the only stuff that isn’t green is the gunk in the sky after a ride home in the suv (suave in french) after a green day’s work. don’t worry about that. pay no attention.

  73. curious says:

They are lies. Why is it no one wants to use the real words? Not misstatements, not falsehoods, lies. Heaven knows we would not want to offend liars by calling them liars. We must be polite to the liars. While they can damage the country by lying. This freshman is simply doing what his party always does. And he is earning it early.

  74. Tim Vaculik says:

    pete,

    C’mon, now… “demonstrably untrue?”

Surely you are not advocating the marginalization of all dissent from the annointed one’s agenda, right?

  75. the great GOPsby says:

why do we need reform? why not leave the stratification system in place so hunks like me, tim, young republican, and rlf can shine through the city on a hill?

  76. Tim Vaculik says:

    dbadass,

Well, I wasn’t referring to you specifically. It’s just that a lot of people who post here seem to think (erroneously) that Republicans are the devil’s spawn and that they are responsible for every bad thing that now befalls us as a nation.

MAJOR case of putting on the blinders in my opinion…

  77. Tim Vaculik says:

    Someone enlighten me if possible…

WHY has TP not blogged on the situation in Hoinduras? THis is a major story with a lot of ramifications, especially since it has revealed even more about our President’s sympathies with regards to Marxist dictators.

  78. pete says:

There again, Timmeh. Your guy GOPsby and the other sockpuppets are making your side sound like morons, not to mention the veiled insult of your daughter, sometimes they are downright treasonous. I’m not trying to convert you and don’t want to cost you any troll cred but, don’t you ever want to tell the silly, irrelevant, and completely illogical trolls to STFU?

Heck! I don’t like singling anyone out but I’ve asked a couple of liberals to STFU and most of the rest of us have as well. Are you just so programed that you can’t admit anyone on your side can also be a jackass?

  79. Tim Vaculik says:

How do you get from pete’s comment to suggesting that pete “advocates the marginalization of all dissent”???

    That’s just weird.

  81. Tim Vaculik says:

    pete,

Well, my opinion is that they are entitled to their opinion and I don’t see why it is any reflection on me. We are individuals with our own opinions.

Put another way, folks who have a different opinion than the majority of folks on this blog are not a monolithic bloc any more than you folks are.

  83. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

    Tim Vaculik

What the h@#* is happening here???

What is happening is a total rejection of Republican style fascism by Americans. Americans simply will not tolerate a fascist theocracy ever again.

The Republican Party will continue to lose representatives at all levels of government until they cease to exist.

  84. Xisithrus says:

Well, what GOPsby doesnt understand about money is that peoples ‘work’ doesnt create money as its lent into existence by the private Fed which did no ‘work’ to create that money. Your working to pay off a debt you never agreed to. Its debt peonage and that system was not invented by republicans it was invented by crooks intent on stealing all the fake ‘green’ they create by depleting your ‘battery’

  85. Tim Vaculik says:

    ralph,

O.K., I can be a little cryptic at times I’ll admit. What I meant was that Pete argued it was a matter of facts whereas I maintain it was opinions.

Whenever I hear folks start talking about “settled science”, or “the facts” alarm bells go off.

I think if folks were honest they would have to admit that people of ALL political persuasions cite information that supports their cause!

I just think it’s a dangerous trend when media outlets engage in limiting information based upon their own biases.

  86. pete says:

Perhaps the stories aren’t clear? What happened, as near as I can figure, is that an ad was aired that contained fabricated, falsified, and discredited data. When the station found out they pulled it. Like I said, it’s the same duty they have to protect consumers from false claims about unsafe products.

  87. Tim Vaculik says:

    Levi,

    It’s still just weird.

I think if folks were honest they would have to admit that people of ALL political persuasions cite information that supports their cause!

That’s a different thing than making shit up.

I just think it’s a dangerous trend when media outlets engage in limiting information based upon their own biases.

So you don’t think the media should have ANY standards regarding truthful content in political ads it runs?

Sounds like all someone would have to do is claim it as “opinion” and you’re cool with a flat-out lie.

  89. Tim Vaculik says:

Well, my opinion is that they are entitled to their opinion and I don’t see why it is any reflection on me. We are individuals with our own opinions.

If the neoCons were saying “It will cost each household $175 (to use the highest reliable estimate) per year, and we think that’s wrong,” that would be an opinion.

But what they are saying is “It will cost each household $3,000 (to use the lowest discredited number) per year, and we think that’s wrong,” and that is a lie.

It’s really not a big moral or philisophical dilemma to discern between the two.

  91. Tim Vaculik says:

    ralph,

C’mon! Do you actually believe that anyone or any institution has produced an accurate estimate of the cost of this bill?

We are still in the realm of SWAG at this point, so it’s disingenuous to all of a sudden say that one set of numbers is “factual” and another estimate is not!!!

  92. dbadass says:

Where the hell is that Young Republican? Is the Young Republican a fraud or is the Young Republican a pussy?

  93. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

The Republican Party is a fascist organization which is easily proven based on the 14 defining characteristics of fascism.

Modern American Republicans are very closely associated with fascism on 12 of the 14 characteristics, and somewhat closely with the other 2.

You may want to deny it, but Republicans have adopted fascism, and Americans are going to vote them out of power, forever.

    Welcome to reality.

  94. Tim Vaculik says:

Okay, Timmeh — you’ve just blown any credibility you have built up here today.

Perhaps YOU should study history — specifically, the historical elements of fascist regimes.

Facsism is directly opposed to socialism, as it protects corporate interests, intertwines religion and the ruling elite and disdains intellectualism. Sound familiar?

Mussolini himself said, “Fascism, which was not afraid to call
itself reactionary…does not hesitate to call itself illiberal and
    anti-liberal”

You can argue all you want, but most scholars of history and politics place fascism on the far right of the political spectrum.

And you just make yourself look foolish when you try to sell that Doughy Pantload crap.

The Subpar GOPsby said: xisitrus, i remain firmly behind the federal reserve. they provide independent analysis and control of the most beautiful piece of paper i have ever witnessed! i trust them will all of my sweat and tears! except that time they got reagan’s wonderful economic growth off to a rough start!

    1. I’m guessing the piece of paper talked about is not the Constitution or the Declaration of Independence, considering the fascist dullard who made the comment.
    2. We’re bailing out half the country as a direct result of “reagan’s wonderful economic growth.” By portraying it in this way, one can surmise that the writer is either A. A pampered trust-fund baby from one of America’s robber-baron families, or B. really, really stupid.

  109. The Moderate Squad says:

Anyone who cites Jonah Goldberg as a credible source has relinquished any right to be taken seriously.

  110. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

    Tim,

I most certainly do not have to read a book based on fascist wingnut propaganda.

Tim, you are clearly much to uneducated to use the internet.
Please turn off your computer and go finish your homework.

  111. angels81 says:

Tim, you mean the Jonah Goldberg that every History Professor trashed for writting junk, that was based in no facts? That Jonah Goldberg?

  112. Tim Vaculik says:

    dbadass,

You left me for a Quesadilla? I am devastated.

I haven’t eaten a thing yet, but my wife’s on the way home so while you rub your tummy, I will be downstairs gnawing on the chair!

  113. Lefty Liberal says:

I see timmy has his head up his a$$ again. If he had paid attention to anything in a history class he would have known that Hitler was a VERY right wing dictator.

He is using the word “Socialist” in the NAZI name to mean socialism in the economic sense. Typical conservative un-intellectual idiot.

Timmy, go take a course in economics and see what socialism really is.

  114. hormiga brava chavez says:

    Tim must’ve failed history.

  116. Lefty Liberal says:

Little timmy probably thinks that East Germany, or it’s official title “German Democratic Republic” was a democracy! Idiot.

    angels81 Says:
Tim, you mean the Jonah Goldberg that every History Professor trashed for writting junk, that was based in no facts? That Jonah Goldberg?

No, angels, I think he meant the Jonah Goldberg who said that fascism and liberalism were connected because both are into organic food.

Oh, wait — that’s the same Jonah Goldberg.

    Never mind.

  120. the great GOPsby says:

i thought you stuck it through thin and thin. f you. fu you. fuc you.

  121. ralph the wonder locust says:

Okay, let’s try another tack here:

Timmeh… you suggest that fascism is an extreme form of the Left.

So, obviously, are Communism and Socialism.

What would you say is the form that an extreme form of the Right would take, if such a thing existed?

It seems all the really bad things are leftist, hm? Is the Right simply not capable of extreme forms?

  122. Lefty Liberal says:

    AB:

What I was trying to say is that Socialism is an economic theory in the same way that Capitalism and Communism are economic theories. Just because the word Socialism is used in the term NAZI doesn’t mean that NAZI Germany was a socialist country.

  123. pete says:

Nope. I don’t subscribe to cable and won’t until I can specifically exclude the corporate cable “news” channels. I’m not in the habit of paying people to lie to me.

See, here’s the thing. The cable “news” industry as a whole is consumed with non-news. On the other hand, I think that the message coming from FAUX and Reichradio is dangerous. I guess you just have to take my word for it that I would be just as outraged if Katie Couric suggested we should arm ourselves in anticipation of armed rebellion.

I would be even more concerned if members of national “liberal” organizations were snapping one by one and racking up body counts. That isn’t happening.

On the other hand, about 60 innocent American citizens have been slaughtered since the election by people with clear, if tenuous, ties to right-wing organizations who immersed themselves in right-wing ideology. And that’s the problem I have with the right-wing media. Their rhetoric is violent and their subscribers are becoming increasingly violent.

The inherent dishonesty of it all is a distant second in my objections but it’s still significant. The fact of the matter is that there are some important issues that have been politicized by ignorant people for greedy ends. Ends like ad ratings and ad dollars.

Creationism vs. evolution is a convenient example. To put it bluntly, creationism is wrong by every conceivable test. The Book of Genesis in particular is demonstrably wrong on virtually every point. And you won’t find a sane, honest, qualified scientist to say otherwise.

And yet? We still waste time in public discourse about teaching creationism in schools and many media sources shamelessly present the argument for magic in the discussion of the science.

When it comes to this ad, they made up the number without sourcing it. They got called on it and couldn’t produce proof of their claim. And, on a more general note, the right-wing never seems to remember the proposed profits for green technology. Their dire predictions are based all on “sunk cost” without consideration of the new income sources.

A coordinated effort and initial investment in hydrogen technology, for instance, could spark the next “oil boom”. A more short term investment would be increased reliance on natural gas. It’s still bad but it’s better than gasoline and every drop of petroleum we don’t burn means more for plastic and other industrial uses.

Living without gasoline will be no great trick compared to trying to live without plastic. And you won’t find any cable “news” channel who will say that. I’m glad that WDBJ-TV is, apparently, required by the FCC to pull demonstrably false paid ads. It’s another little sign that people are tired of the whining and sniping and lying for political points.

  124. Lefty Liberal says:

    AB:

There was an episode of “Yes, Prime Minister” (British Comedy series) where they were talking about a country and the one of the Prime Ministers aids was talking to someone from the Foreign Ministry. When asked whether or not the country was a Communist country or not, the man from the Foreign Ministry replied “It’s name is the Peoples Democratic Republic of “. The Prime Ministers aid then said “Right, it’s communist”.

O.K., then at least you and the other know-nothings should visit http://www.wikipedia.com

    !!! Nuff, said.

I went to that link, and it took me to the root page of wikipedia. Nuff said, I guess. Was there something in wikipedia you wanted to make reference to that supported your point that fascism arises out of socialism? Maybe you will post that link someday, but don’t bother.

You do know that wikipedia is not a credible source because its content is contributed to by online users so any wingnut can go there and make up anything he or she wants.

Personally I think the Republican Party has gone “all in” for fascism, and when their representation has dwindled to some critical point, they will openly revolt in civil war.

  131. pete says:

We aren’t talking about 1930’s Germany. That time and place is gone forever. We need to be concerned with 2009 right here. Right here and now there is a right-wing extremist movement that’s racking up a score. And they are being fueled by a right-wing media that becomes more irresponsible with each passing day.

And, once again, I challenge the stupid trolls to provide a list of those intentionally murdered by “leftists” in this country in the last 30 years.

You know, I have taken on several of the wingnutty trolls here on TP since I arrived, but I had never really confronted Timmy, although I had heard so many others criticizing him. He is a typical, ignorant, wingnut troll.

Timmy is a propagandist for the fascist, theocratic Republican Party. He is not here to learn or think, he is here to spread propaganda to everyone, even those who despise everything Republicans represent.

Fortunately Bush and Cheney did to America exactly what the Japanese did at Pearl Harbor. They have awakened the sleeping giant whose vengeance shall be terrible.

atheism was code for ‘party at 5PM’ at that interior department frathouse where the oil leasing specialists we’re humping each other mercilessly. there must be a fine family of rabbits out of of that escapade on the way to add to the interior.

  146. pete says:

If I may quibble. I don’t think that fascism, per se, is the real threat. It’s just one small brand of totalitarianism. It doesn’t matter what ideology is exploited. Communism, capitalism, monarchies, “conservative” movements and “liberal”, all have produced totalitarian regimes.

One way to look at the last eight years is that we actually survived a totalitarian regime and did it without civil strife. We are no where near out of the woods but that’s no small accomplishment. One could argue that the safeguards built into the system worked.

  147. dbadass says:

  151. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

    Pete,

The sockpuppets aren’t any fun because they won’t even try to discuss anything with you.

Timmy didn’t really present anything that a thousand other trolls haven’t already tried to pull. Not much of a challenge really, but it’s a subject I feel I know a great deal about.

  152. the great GOPsby says:

for every psalm of atheism is the liberal use of 17 waggers.

  153. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

  158. pete says:

    Levi,

You’ll get no argument there. I just picture Timmeh as being a little less wild-eyed and frothing at the mouth than the recent batch of sockpuppets.

Alas, as the implosion continues, there are fewer who are willing or able to make cogent arguments about, well, anything. And the sad fact is that the remaining dregs aren’t likely to change much. We’re seeing a very fast form of natural selection in the way the GOP is driving out the “impure” when they have already suffered a huge loss in numbers.

  159. the great GOPsby says:

I say we offer an opportunity for an additional 10 minutes for an explaination. I think this shows an honest opportunity for this matter to be solved easily. After that I think it is obvious that this individual doesn’t even the dignity of a list…

  162. the great GOPsby says:

timmy was talking dirty and i thought of doing the same. please don’t interrogate me!

  163. pete says:

Not only in voting numbers, but I think they will actually die out. Can you picture having relations with someone who thought like that? Ew.
Of course, we all know our trolls never get any. It’s all hypothetical to them, like Timmy’s wife and daughter.

  174. pete says:

I don’t know, SKdeAnt. From the first time I saw Ronnie Raygun humping Fallwell’s leg I’ve been saying, “o.k. now the sane people will take over”. I still find the rise of the religious right in amazement. And, while there are some encouraging signs and they are isolating themselves, I’m not quite ready to count them out yet.

I think we will see the GOP contract into the small, but loud, extremists. It will take time but, if trends continue, we might even see a third party. And the way things are going the remaining GOoPers, regardless of what they call their party, aren’t going to be even a distant 2nd. But I don’t see them going extinct any time soon.

Global warming dissent is being squashed by the liberal fascists.

There are more than 700 scientists who disagree with the U.N. — 13 times the number who authored the U.N.’s 2007 climate summary for policymakers.

In April, the Polish Academy of Sciences published a document challenging man-made global warming

In the Czech Republic, where President Vaclav Klaus remains a leading skeptic, today only 11% of the population believes humans play a role.

In France, President Nicolas Sarkozy wants to tap Claude Allegre to lead the country’s new ministry of industry and innovation. Twenty years ago Mr. Allegre was among the first to trill about man-made global warming, but the geochemist has since recanted.

New Zealand last year elected a new government, which immediately suspended the country’s weeks-old cap-and-trade program.

Joanne Simpson, the world’s first woman to receive a Ph.D. in meteorology, expressed relief upon her retirement last year that she was finally free to speak “frankly” of her nonbelief.

Dr. Kiminori Itoh, a Japanese environmental physical chemist who contributed to a U.N. climate report, dubs man-made warming “the worst scientific scandal in history.”

Norway’s Ivar Giaever, Nobel Prize winner for physics, decries it as the “new religion.”

A group of 54 noted physicists, led by Princeton’s Will Happer, is demanding the American Physical Society revise its position that the science is settled.

… more than 100 PhDs who signed on to this statement:

“We, the undersigned scientists, maintain that the case for alarm regarding climate change is grossly overstated. Surface temperature changes over the past century have been episodic and modest and there has been no net global warming for over a decade now. After controlling for population growth and property values, there has been no increase in damages from severe weather-related events. The computer models forecasting rapid temperature change abjectly fail to explain recent climate behavior. Mr. President, your characterization of the scientific facts regarding climate change and the degree of certainty informing the scientific debate is simply incorrect.”

  186. paganagnostic says:

If only we could write these people off as neanderthal crackpots, but there is too much at stake and no time left. The true legacy of the Bush administration will not be Iraq and the economic meltdown, it will be the lost years in the fight against climate change.

Bush, bought and paid for by Saudi Arabia and Big Oil, gagged NASA and Big Science, and it will be a long time before minor right wing stooges like those above figure that out, if they ever do. Moreover, these politicians represent constituencies where possibly a majority of the voters don’t really believe in the possibility of global warming as they don’t believe in evolution [ only about 40% of Americans do].

If the costs of removing CO2 from the atmosphere after it has been produced by vehicles and power stations are factored into the operating costs then solar, wind and other renewable energy sources can easily be shown to be viable. They would save the taxpayer money! There is, of course, no practical way to remove the excess CO2 that has been pumped out since the industrial revolution and our only hope of avoiding further climate change is to do what was voted for last week, and lots more of it as fast as possible. What price human survival?
