Yesterday in an interview with Phoenix’s KTVK 3TV, the local news anchor asked Sen. John McCain (R-AZ) to play a quick word association game. McCain was left tongue-tied and speechless when the reporter asked him to give a one-word response to what he thinks about the controversial Arizona Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
HOST: Health care.
MCCAIN: Needs reform.
HOST: That’s two words. [weird laugh] Iraq.
MCCAIN: Success.
HOST: Arizona.
MCCAIN: The best.
HOST: US-Mexico Border.
McCain: Cartels.
HOST: GOP.
MCCAIN: Transition.
HOST: Sheriff Joe Arpaio:
MCCAIN: Umm…

Though McCain — who is up for re-election — failed to provide his own constituents with a clear answer last night, he offered CNN’s national news anchor John King a much more extensive reaction when asked about Arpaio back in February:
KING: You have had a roller-coaster relationship with this sheriff [Joe Arpaio]. He says he is just simply enforcing the law. He goes into businesses, he’s rounding up people. John Conyers, others in Congress say racial profiling. Is the sheriff in line or out of line in your view?
MCCAIN: Having been engaged in the presidential campaign, I haven’t paid as close attention. I’ve disagreed with the sheriff fundamentally about the fact that we need to have a comprehensive approach to illegal immigration.

Essay: A Day in the Life of a True Conservative
Joe Conservative wakes up in the morning and goes to the bathroom. He flushes his toilet and brushes his teeth, mindful that each flush & brush costs him about 43 cents to his privatized water provider. His wacky, liberal neighbor keeps badgering the company to disclose how clean and safe their water is, but no one ever finds out. Just to be safe, Joe Conservative boils his drinking water.
Joe steps outside and coughs–the pollution is especially bad today, but the smokiest cars are the cheapest ones, so everyone buys ‘em. Joe Conservative checks to make sure he has enough toll money for the 3 different private roads he must drive to work. There is no public transportation, so traffic is backed up and his 10 mile commute takes an hour.
On the way, he drops his 12 year old daughter off at the clothing factory she works at. Paying for kids to go to private school until they’re 18 is a luxury, and Joe needs the extra income coming in. Times are hard and there are no social safety nets.
He gets to work 5 minutes late and misses the call for Christian prayer, and is immediately docked by his employer. He is not feeling well today, but has no health insurance, since neither his employer nor his government provide it, and paying for it himself is really expensive, since he has a precondition. He just hopes for the best.
Joe’s workday is 12 hours long, because there is no regulation over working hours, and Joe will lose his job if he complains or unionizes. Today is an especially bad day. Joe’s manager demands that he work until midnight, a 16 hour day. Joe does, knowing that he’ll lose his job if he does
not.
Finally, after midnight, Joe gets to pick up his daughter and go home. His daughter shows him the deep cut she got on the industrial sewing machine today. Joe is outraged and asks why she doesn’t have metal mesh gloves or other protection. She says the company will not provide it and she’ll have to pay for it out of her own pocket. Joe looks at the wound and decides they’ll use an over the counter disinfectant and bandages until it heals. She’ll have a scar, but getting
stitches at the emergency room is expensive.
His daughter also complains that the manager made suggestive overtures towards her. Joe counsels her to be a “good girl” and not rock the boat, or she’ll get fired and they’ll be out the income. His daughter says she can’t wait until she’s 18 so she can vote for change or go to the Iraq War.
They get home and there’s a message from his elderly father who can’t afford to pay his medical or heating bills. Joe can hear him coughing and shivering.
Joe turns on the radio and the top story is a proposal in Congress to raise the voting age to 25. A rare liberal opinionator states that it’s an attempt to keep power out of the hands of working class Americans. The conservative host immediately quashes him, calling him “a utopian idealist,” and agreeing that people aren’t mature enough to make good choices until they’re at least 25.
Joe chuckles at the wine?swilling, cheese eating liberal egghead and thinks, “Thank God I live in America where I have freedom!”

Sweetie, the war was won until your neocon boys took their eyes off the prize and decidied to go adventioneering in Iraq. If we had followed up on the initial rout of the taliban with sufficient presence to provide safety to the average Afghani, this was one place we really could have been hailed as liberators. We could have left those folks to run their own country, which I believe is our object now. Sadly, the neglect of the last six years has made that task harder. July 2nd, 2009 at 11:45 pmPlus, a real optimist could make a strong case that President Obama has already had better results inspiring indigenous troops/police than his predecessor.
As a skeptic I would say that’s oversimplified and Obama can’t take all the credit since much of it was in the works but, the facts fit the theory. There has certainly been more participation by the forces we’ve trained.
The memoirs of the generals, from all parties, will be interesting in their recollections of the change in POTUS. Too bad we’ll have to wait a few years.

Nor do I. We must all remain patient and continue to advocate for what is right. It is unfair to place the entire burden on the man we elected president, and then fuss that change is not swift enough. (Not that I’m accusing you of that). As mentioned previously in this thread, the alternative we had in the last election was indeed scary.

It’s od that the American media doesn’t seem to enthused by the increased commitment of Iraqi, Afghan, and even Pakistani forces. Combat is always bad but the less we have to do with it the better. Mainly because the people we are fighting, despite their image, would rather not shoot at neighbors.
There’s some sign that one or all of those parties may be able to soon conduct arrests of the really dangerous ones. As these countries resume control, it’s just a matter of giving the right people the right list. I hope.

I retired young and spent much of my career with younger employees and coworkers. And I have a voracious thirst for new data. Growing up I was taught to respect the newest data over old knowledge and have tried to avoid the trap of being caught within my generation.
And another part is that my parents were old enough to be my grandparents while my grandfathers served in WW1. So I was raised by people who were a generation older than most and then I spent much of my life with younger generations. So, I can mingle with people from anywhere or any age.
