Gov. Sarah Palin Quits Her Job

Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin (R) announced this morning from her home in Wasilla that she will not be seeking re-election and that she will be stepping down in a few weeks. Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell will be inaugurated as Alaska’s governor on July 25. A local NBC affiliate reports that “there was no immediate word as to why she will resign, though speculation has been rampant that the former vice presidential candidate is gearing up for a run at the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.” Conservative columnist Charles Krauthammer said on Fox News yesterday that Palin “is not a serious candidate for the presidency.” “You cannot sustain a campaign of platitudes and clichés over a year and a half if you’re running for the presidency,” he said.

After running through her accomplishments as governor during the announcement, Palin said, “This success I am proud to take credit, for hiring the right people.” She said she decided to “veto” those “stimulus dollars” because “some of those dollars would harm Alaska and they harm America.” “So that Alaska may progress, I will not seek re-election as governor,” she said, adding, “I’ve determined it’s best to transfer the authority of governor to Lieutenant Governor Parnell.” Watch it (note the video feed cut out before Palin finished her statement):

Update Announcing her resignation, Palin assailed "political operatives" who "descended on Alaska" after her VP nomination and added that fighting ethics violations allegations ever since "hasn't been cheap." She also said she is looking at "a half a million dollars in legal bills," calling it "pretty insane." See Palin's full statement here.
Update Calling into Fox News after the announcement, Bill Kristol said, "If I had to guess, we just saw the opening statement of the 2012 campaign." Later writing on the Weekly Standard's blog, Kristol digs in:
If Palin wants to run in 2012, why not do exactly what she announced today? It's an enormous gamble - but it could be a shrewd one. After all, she's freeing herself from the duties of the governorship. Now she can do her book, give speeches, travel the country and the world, campaign for others, meet people, get more educated on the issues - and without being criticized for neglecting her duties in Alaska. I suppose she'll take a hit for leaving the governorship early - but how much of one? She's probably accomplished most of what she was going to get done as governor, and is leaving a sympatico lieutenant governor in charge.
Update Palin tweets: "We'll soon attach info on decision to not seek re-election... this is in Alaska's best interest, my family's happy... it is good, stay tuned"
Update MSNBC's Andrea Mitchell reports:
"Talking to people who are very close to Sarah Palin, I have been told that she has told her supporters that she is out of politics, period. She is fed up with politics. She doesn’t like her life. She feels like she has to raise her family. She’s sick of the commute from Wasilla to the capital and she really does not want to run for higher office. This is not the case where she is stepping down in order to figure the way for a presidential run. In fact, she has told some of her biggest backers in the national Republican Party that they are free to choose other candidates for 2012."
Update Palin political adviser Fred Malek said that Palin isn't ruling out a future run for office, and he expects her to help other Republicans raise money. "She’s not going to go hide in a cave," Malek said in a telephone interview. "She'll continue to be a major friend and force for Republican figures in this country."
Update Alaska Lt. Gov. Sean Parnell responds: "It is with a heavy heart that I hear these words."

Hopefully, Obama will take Palin’s cue and resign, too. Get out now, Mr. Debt, before the dollar is worth nothing. I don’t think the economy can stand anymore economic madness in the next 3 1/2 years. Resign. Now.

She’s gotta have a show on Fox!

The repub spin will be this is a shrewd political move. Romney, Pawlenty, Huckabee and Jindal will have to go on the attack to counter her move. By the time the GOP nomination is made it won’t be worth a bucket of warm spit.

My first guess? The First Dud/hillbilly heroin/underage boy. Okay, it could be underage girl.

Second guess? Someone is seriously looking into who financed, and built, lakefront Casa de Palin.

Third guess? Another grandchild on the way, maybe via Willow.

Way too many possibilities, but there is much more behind this story, especially having it come out Friday afternoon of a 3-day weekend.

  25. Stupid Git says:

    dbadass,

Apparently they’re going on about the economic collapse that’s already been going on for years but only caught the headlines as of October. But it’s all Obama’s fault. Nothing to do with stagnating wages for 30 years compensated by massive debt building and deregulated financial practices that have hit a tipping point.

I’ll agree that we’re in a collapse and that Obama’s not doing much but sweeping the problems under the rug. But, that’s different from blaming him for the collapse.

Back to the main topic though: PALIN 2012 – Wrapped in the flag, carrying a Bible!

So instead of burnishing her slim résumé by adding three more years of executive experience, she’s content to stand on the two years she’s accumulated so far and run on that?

Sheesh. There’s some top-notch strategizin’. You betcha.

  29. Wiz says:

This could also be very much an attempt to cash in on her popularity with the GOP base. She will be on a paid speaking and fund raising tour for the next 4 years. In a sense this will be good news for the Democrats, she will suck up the available Repub cash while being unlikely to get the nomination much less win a Presidential election. I wonder if she has a ghost writer for her book. I think she should title her book: “The Barracuda”.

Jenny Sanford might ask Sister Sarah to give a lap dance to Mark Sanford in hopes he’ll forget about his soul mate Maria.

  62. STL Cynic says:

There are only two logical reasons for this resignation:

    1. Letterman was slightly wrong and it was actually Sarah who got knocked up by A-Rod in New York; or

    2. She’s pregnant with Michael Jackson’s love child.

I was thinking the same thing. She can’t play with the big boys in politics anymore. They took their toys, and she is done.

  80. Lefty Liberal says:

I think this is a precursor to her running for President. She and her advisers think that just because she can draw large crowds at rallies, she will waltz into the White House in 2013.

While she is Governor of Alaska, she needs to be in the state and since it is a long way from the rest of the US it takes too much time to get to all of the fund raisers she needs to attend.

There may be a scandal, but I really think the main reason is she wants to run for President in 2012.

    http://andrewsullivan.theatlantic.com/the_daily_dish/2009/07/the-core-of-palins-appeal.html

Part of Sarah Palin’s irresistible appeal to her fundamentalist base is her ability to look at the camera with utter conviction and declare black to be white.

The ability to lie well is a valuable part of the fundamentalist psychology. My son isn’t gay, he just hasn’t found the right woman! Those rocks aren’t 50 million years old, they just look like it as a test of our faith! My sexless marriage isn’t foundering, it is filled with God’s spirit! The minister isn’t molesting little Maria, they’re just very close! It isn’t torture, it is being tough on terrorists!

Fundamentalists can recognize a truly audacious and talented liar from miles away. Instead of running the other way, as you might expect, they gather around the powerful liar, for they know that their own lies will be respected and protected by a leader who understands the paramount importance of preserving their whole system of denial.

The part of the speech the fill in for Hannity allowed his audience to hear was an upset, out of breath, scattered Palin. Alaskan Sarah Palin authority (and occasional BRAD BLOG guest blogger) Shannyn Moore, who broke the news at HuffPo today, tells me she believes, with good reason, that there is an “iceberg scandal that’s about to break. She’s doing damage control.”

She says Palin is “resigning as part of damage control” due to a scandal this is “not of a family nature.”

“The governor would not be able to continue her job when it comes out,” she told me on the phone just now, before adding: “Why would Mark Sanford not resign, but Sarah Palin did? Her family didn’t even know about the resignation until they were standing with her by the lake” when she made her announcement.

    Sarah Palin Drafted

“I can see Russia from my front porch.” __Sarah Palin

The North American Air Defense Command today announced that it has drafted Alaska Governor Sarah Palin to head its

    “Russian Missile Watch Division.”

“We can’t see Russia and our men are only 50 away,” said the Air Force Chief of Staff. “Her fantastic ability to see Russia from Wasilla or Juneau…one is 700 miles from Russia and the other 1100 miles, makes her a unique asset the Air Force can’t ignore. We need her like bananas need peels.”
Palin said she developed her unique eyesight while looking for moose in the woods. “I take moose hunting seriously and if you can’t see them, you can’t whack them. I developed my fantastic eyesight after spending years in the Alaska jungle. It’s not easy seeing through the trees.”
“Even Superman doesn’t have Sarah’s eyesight,” said the general. “She has an incredible talent and it would have been irresponsible for us not to draft her, despite the fact that she is a total idiot when it comes to other matters. We’re looking for missiles, not great ideas.”
Sarah was thrilled to be drafted. “I wanted to get away from my idiot family,” she said.
The Air Force general assured the American public that Sarah would be watched, just to make sure that “she doesn’t start shooting at us. Good eyesight doesn’t mean you have brains,” he said.”

When home, I will exercise my right to debate the issues but I will never enter into the personal attacks. You may not agree with Palin, but to viciously attack her and her family is disgraceful. The facts of the lawsuits are unbelievable harassment. I respect politicians of both parties that sustain the vicious and personal attacks from both sides. I know because I have worked with politicians on both sides through the charities my wife and I support in some very dangerous places. I have seen diplomats on both sides do incredibly courageous acts in places like Bosnia and Kosovo to stand between the murderers and the innocent. But bloggers like several here do not believe in a two party system. Any differing view that does not match yours, you denigrate and abuse them. If she can’t handle the stress of these things, then she is not qualified to hold higher office. I will feel sorry for Alaska and the US Senate if she tries to run for Murkoski’s seat and wins. where do you get this impression that conservatives don’t care about people? the federal government shouldn’t be consolidating power in thinking they can do a better job. governors are responsible for well being of the people of their state. it’s the individual initiative of the state with the blessing of the producing company to make those payments. the name calling isn’t getting any of you anywhere.

statism is socialism. i don’t have to like ny, nj, vt, but then again, i have somewhere else to move if i don’t like it. broad one-size fits all consolidated power doesn’t give you that option.

Your “return on investment” argument is a crock. If what you are saying is true, I guess you are saying that Alaska is just a much better “investor” than a state like California that puts in $1.00 for every .87 they get back.

In truth, all it is saying is that they take more money from our government than they put in. To anyone other than an idiot like you, that says the state is leeching off of the Federal government. ___________________________________________________________

Yeah, most of us were kind of hoping she’d run in 2012, too. Not because she’d “kick some major Democrat party A$$” (a snowball has a better chance in h*ll than that happening), but because it would lead to a spectacular implosion of the Republican Party.

The Republicans still don’t get it — that in order to survive, they need to return back to their traditional conservative values and kick the evangelicals, the neocons, and the warmongering yeehaws out of the party. They need to quit marketing a product that the people have already figured out is no good, and start providing some real solutions people can get behind. And they need to find a real leader for the party instead of putting a puppet in charge while special interests run the country. And a major purge of the characters who alienate the moderates the party so badly needs (Rush Limbaugh, Ann Coulter, etc.) wouldn’t hurt.

Since the GOP refuses to face reality, they deserve to go down in a ball of flame. Then, out of the ashes will come a new GOP, or a new party (perhaps with a libertarian bent) will arise to take its place as one of the two major parties in the country while the old GOP goes the way of the Whigs.

As we prepare to celebrate our country’s independence, Sarah Palin wishes to take this opportunity to express her great appreciation for being so blessed to be thankful for this great nation of ours….that she appreciates….and is thankful for…which makes her so blessed….to be able to appreciate our great nation…of ours…of which she is a part…of.

She also wishes to express how blessed she is to live in the great state of Alaska. After all, anyone can pet a moose, but only a true Alaskan can reduce it to a large pot of moose chili.

She is also so appreciative of all those who appreciate her family, including Trapp, Trog, Peter-Piper, Truck, Barstool, and Wallow, as well as future babies Tinsel, Teflon, and Tallow.

  385. 5th Estate says:

Even when it IS about her she can’t resist making it even more about her.

  386. pete says:

Oh lord no, shoeless! If gay people started migrating to Alaska she might be compelled to remain in office. Then she would probably shoot them from her helicopter.

Those who truly sacrifice themselves in war for our freedom and our security and we can all learn from our selfless, selfless troops. They’re bold and they don’t give up...”

But Sarah has a note from herself excusing her from that lesson about self-sacrifice and not giving up.

The one thing she said that was probably true—though I doubt it was honest–is that her resignation probably is best for Alaska.

  452. the great GOPsby says:

but i must say that bristol doesn’t receive welfare. it’s ok if a parent chips in, the point is that it’s not the government. and even if it was, it’s the state government and it doesn’t concern me.

  453. spencers mom says:

Poor gobospit, it has mommy issues. That certainly explains a LOT here. Face it, when you have to give yourself the name “great” in your moniker, you’re not get the validation you need in your real life.

Therapy. Lots of therapy. And probably strong meds, too.

    You’re welcome.

    PEACE

So black teenage mothers (job title MOTHER) on welfare are A-okay now?

    ————–

    sure, doesn’t bother me.

    Liar.

You spend so much of your time complaining that none of us could possibly have jobs, and that you’re so much better because you got that job sucking out porta-potties.

And state governments don’t receive their funding through the federal government , skid mark ?

  456. the great GOPsby says:

spencer apparently has mommy issues that will affect him later in life – necessitating the meds and therapy.

spencer can thank mommy later, for she trolls her ass off in front of the computer instead of being a mother.

  457. Bozo The Neoclown says:

“as in, a devoted mother, as in, certainly not a liberal”

i guess that means we can include on this the list of “devoted mothers” those who allow their daughters to get knocked up out of wedlock and not complete high school as long as they aren’t “liberal”?

seriously… maybe she did at one of those governors conventions.. at this point with the weekly, almost daily scandals created by the religious right party of NO, nothing would surprise me.

And let us not forget… according to hate America radio, it is the liberals fault for creating such unhappiness that the goppers can no longer control them self.

  459. the great GOPsby says:

what do libs care what jobs anyone has? you don’t create them.

and what does bozo do for a living?

  460. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    zooey,
it is a special talent to suck out porta-potties using nothing but a beverage straw, you have to admit

  461. Zooey says:

I see greatgobsofsnot is not only a liar, but a coward who goes after a child not even commenting on this board.

I guess gobbysnot is upset because his mom told him she missed him with the hanger.

Least spencer’s mom hasn’t allowed her son to knock someone up and drop out of school , turdburglar ; can you say that about your beloved Bible Spice Palin ?

    ohhhhh, snap!

Don’t forget: Unwed teen-aged mothers who say in one interview (that darn librul media — fox) that abstinence is not realistic then gets to change careers to become a Spokesmom for Abstinence — for a company whose ads are over-the-line in their sexual suggestiveness.

It all makes sense — in Wasilla, USA.

Ok, I admit it. It’s a very special talent.

And as soon as gobbysnot knocks the boss’s dick out of his mom’s mouth, she’ll tell him she’s proud, too.

  467. the great GOPsby says:

so what if she didn’t complete the curriculum at a government school. there are correspondence schools carrying the same accreditation as brick-and-mortar schools, 2- and 4-year colleges, private schools & colleges, career institutes. besides, they already told you they were continuing their educations via correspondence, not that the liberals deserve an explanation, and nor will they accept it. it’s useless because they’re vultures.

I dind’t know your mom was a porn star! It’s nice she does some work on the side — for your benefit.

another liberal caring about the children.

Like Todd and Sarah cared so much about Bristol they allowed her to sleep with Levi in their own home and get pregnant. Yeah, that’s really caring for your kid.

  471. the great GOPsby says:

liberals don’t create jobs. end of story. and the berkshire hathaway titan doesn’t support the card check bill. he isn’t a liberal.

still have that medication and therapy ready to go, spencer’s mom? turn around and put that IV in zooey’s arm.

  473. spencers mom says:

MCMetal, I’d be shocked as hell if the boy knocked up someone since he just finished the 3rd grade! But that doesn’t mean that I’m not already preaching the need for condoms when he gets much (I hope much, much) older!

    PEACE

  474. Bozo The Neoclown says:

    zooey,
the great gopsbyotch’s old gal doesn’t get paid to film porn, silly! she does it for free because she’s a filthy pig

  475. Reggie says:

Poor pitiful pathetic Gobspy, he’s stuck at denial and there are still three more stages of grief to go before he reaches acceptance.
