The ‘Kristol Ball’ plots Palin’s long-shot path to the White House.

This morning on Fox News Sunday, Weekly Standard Editor Bill Kristol reaffirmed his “contrarian” take on Gov. Sarah Palin’s (R-AK) recent decision to quit. The “Kristol Ball” argued that Palin is now “all in” for a “high risk” presidential run. Depending on her “talents and abilities” Kristol used a strained comparison to President Obama to lay out Palin’s winding road to the White House:

KRISTOL: Everyone said [Obama couldn't] compete with people with these long records. … He seems to have gotten President. I don’t think it is foolish for Palin to think, “You know what, if that’s the world we live in now where people don’t value — maybe correctly — experience in years of experience in Washington, or two terms counts more than two and half years as Governor of Alaska. Maybe she thinks she gets out there and becomes a leader of the conservative movement, and then a leader of the Republican Party, and then conceivably a nominee of the Republican Party, and then conceivably a president just as Obama did.

Watch it:

Kristol has been particularly unreliable as of late, and has been extremely poor in predicting the likely success of would-be presidential candidates. In 2006, he declared that “Barack Obama is not going to beat Hillary Clinton in a single democratic primary.” Earlier in the program, Karl Rove expressed a less charitable view than that of Kristol, saying, “[E]ffective strategies in politics are ones that are so clear and obvious that people can grasp it. It is not clear what her strategy is.”

It doesn’t matter what she thinks. It matters what the voters think. What the voters thought last year was that she was not ready to be vice president. Now the voters will think that she’s still not ready, and she’s a quitter.

Do you ever get tired of being wrong billy?

  4. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

The only way Palin can become leader of the conservative movement is if Rove steps down.

The only way Palin can become leader of the Republican Party is if Limbaugh steps down.

The only way Palin can get the nomination of her party for president is if they are utterly desperate.

The only way Palin can become president is if the fascist theocrats rig another election.

  7. P.D. says:

Sarah palin is no Barack Obama. Let’s look at the facts shall we. Obama has a impressive education, Palin went to several colleges. Barack is a gifted orator, Palin is a shrill harpie who attracts only the right-wing fringe. Some candidate.

  8. Doodlebug Shayne says:

I believe Palin could get the Republican nomination. What’s left of the base is just that stupid.

Way to dash Billy’s wet dreams…
Now he will have to return his “Nailin’ Palin” T-shirt too.

  10. freeman says:

Bloody Billy has done more to put Barrack Obama in office than a cadre of progressive bloggers . His grooming of Sarah Palin and her introduction on the national stage , while frightening to any sane person, has nonetheless done more to scare away would be republican voters than could have been previously calculated .
You don’t think he scored Zooey ?

  11. Zooey says:

    Too funny, Wayne! :D

  12. P.D. says:

I swear, the devotion these old white dudes have for Palin is disgusting. It is only because she is attractive. Lord knows, it isn’t her intellect that attracts them. Maybe it’s because she is a lot like George Bush, an empty vessel they can manipulate. Either way, it gives me the heebie geebies.

  13. freeman says:

Oh and wilyloman aside do you doubt the validity of the WAPO article on an additional 20 000 troops on US soil by 2012 ?

  14. konchster says:

That resignation speech was not the kind of babbling I want too hear from my President . Obviously a spur of the moment thing poorly planned poorly executed.

  16. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

The comparison between Palin and Bush is remarkable. Bush was the empty vessel, which Cheney manipulated from his undisclosed location.

Sarah Palin would be at least as empty headed as Bush was/is and both are radical religious wingnuts.

I wonder who would be the puppeteer behind Palin should she choose to run.

  17. texasrick says:

Can you imagine Sarah doing a town hall meeting such as the President does?

Doesn’t she realize by now that she is a twit, who cannot formulate an intelligent sentence or train of thought.

The base may love her with her “you betchas, wink, wink wink”…but most Americans recognize her for what she is; semi-intelligent, whiney, and self serving.

By time she does run for office more than her popularity numbers will be sagging!
I’m old and I know what nature does as years go on lol.

  18. BradyB says:

You know what, if that’s the world we live in now where people don’t value — maybe correctly — experience in years of experience in Washington

Kristol really doesn’t get it even after all this time. If years of experience in Washington don’t translate into good judgement, then the amount of “experience” is completely irrelevant.

I’ll make Kristol a deal: If Sarah Palin can coherently explain why other countries spend so much less on healthcare per person than the US, while covering all of their citizens then I’ll concede that she might have a chance. But the fact of the mater is that an inexperienced Governor from Alaska who also has no drive to learn policy is going to get crushed in a Presidential run. There aren’t enough idiot in America to elect her.

  19. little davey says:

Mr. Kristol, how about you just raise some educated, intelligent young people? Would be easier and quicker in the long run than getting Sarah Palin into the White House.

  20. little davey says:

Did anyone check…has Mrs Palin been in Argentina recently?

  21. little davey says:

Wrong analogy. Should have compared Palin to Bush. Damn, these are too easy.

Next, she needs to go back to school, which could take her to 2020… she needs to take Political Science 101 and learining the United States Consitution, she knows nothing about that… Freedom of Speech means that I am protected from her, she is not Protected from the Media, stupid lady… When she was Mayor of Wasilla, she tried to ban books, from Harry Potter to Chronicles of Narnia and she lied to the American People about that and last but not least, I will not join her church of evil, I like my little religion, Ah, Blessed Be… Freedom of Religion is any religion.

Lastly, my crystal ball told me that she is facing a peck of felonies and she ain’t getting out of them, I hear that Allenwood is beautiful this time of year… :)

This is the current talking point for the right wing drones.

Go into any other blog, and all they’re saying is the same thing. “They’re obsessed with Palin” is all they’ve got.

She calls ANOTHER live press conference, declares she’s not only not seeking a second term but is walking off the job now, turning her back on the people of Alaska and quitting, and that means “we’re obsessed with her” for commenting on it.

Well slick, the ones who are obsessed with Palin, are you guys who vote for her, worship her, put her pictures on your bedroom walls, etc.

We’re merely responding to yet another one of the Hillbilly Queens wacky press conferences along with her latest disaster.

If it bothers you that we comment on it, then maybe you should tell her to stop calling press conferences and making wacky moves.

One thing I think the Republicans Realized over a year ago, is that Sarah Palin is the best they have at Drawing Crowds.

I remember during last years campaign, that the Republicans abruptly Reversed their plans to Seperate McCain and Palin at rallies, when they discovered that McCain couldn’t draw Big Crowds without Palin.

Among the Prolifers, Values voters, and Born Agains, she is Still a Rock Star.

Republicans must realize they need these footsoldiers to have any Chance at Election success, but that their Taliban-like Nature Turns off Independent Voters.

With A script and a talk show, Gov. Palin can keep these folks active in the Republican Party.

From the Governors office in far away Alaska..not so much.

Palin would want the launch codes TODAY, and want to control the targeting. Bush never did news conferences- Palin would do two a day, never realizing she sucked at them. Why do the other 20 percenters support them? Good question, that probably can be explained by misplaced fears and insecurities.

Basically, this is confirmation of that which we already knew – inarticulate, dimwit, quitter. Nothing new here just ‘more of the same’.

What’s more – all the kristol ball reading and rovian fckspeak in the world isn’t going to change the fact that this woman has never followed through with anything in her life beginning with 5 colleges (for 1-2 semesters each), not completing her tenure as mayor of wasilla, jumping from the petro board before her term was up and now this – bailing on the good people of alaska because they weren’t giving her her way – boo-effin-hoo!

Now when she no longer holds sway over these people with her infamous ‘resignation contracts’ required and signed at the point of employment (aka loyalty letters) – she was clueless about socialism but she surely wasn’t clueless about dictatorship or nazism, was she?

It’s time to for everyone to join in a “palin blackout” and show her just how totally insignificant and irrelevant she is to the american people who have called her chicanery and bluff.

She’s a narcissist of the first magnitude who cuts her teeth on headlines – let’s ignore her totally. She isn’t worth even the time I am taking right now to think and/or type about her.

Sarah Palin has become an irrelevant cipher on the lanscape – an Irresponsible, illiterate and incompetent quitter. She’s toast and it’s not even a year yet since her assinine ‘rollout’ with the entire gang of palin “props” waltzing across the stage looking like the Alaskan Hillbillies. Her “star” rose and crashed in not even one year. Meteoric rise and a titanic epic sink!

What this pathetic excuse-making fraud does now matters little. She’s proven herself to be totally unworthy of any respect from the american people.

Frankly, Scarlet Woman (Brad Hanson ringing any bells?Todd’s ex business partner she was boinging), we just don’t give a damn!

See, what you folks don’t understand is that most Americans are willing to forgive the inevitable gaffes, etc. that grace every politicians life. Just look at all the ones OBAMA made during his campaign!

Finally, I think the polls are already showing that our President isn’t going to be very popular by the time the next election comes around.

Atwater and Rove were Jedi masters at smear. Palin was NOT treated unfairly. She is a true idiot. Almost as stupid as you. The woman couldnt name a SC decision other than Roe v Wade. She thought the founding fathers know about the pledge written about a CENTURY after their time. She smeared, she lied, she divided and was used only to throw red meat to mindless trodlygites like YOU. If she runs again she will be laughed at because that is what she deserves. Don’t be a dolt Timmeh.

    timmeh,

You can’t be serious. She displays an astounding level of ignorance that can only be explained by her being delusional and/or oblivious. She has failed to show any level of expertise on any subject.

She’s one of a group who will stubbornly defend a position they know is false by creating their own reality. Such people are dangerous and, regrettably, can be quite popular with like-minded people.

Personally, I’ve always felt that the attraction is that the ignorant masses get a self esteem boost when someone, more delusional than they are, can achieve success.

  193. EugeneDebs says:

    Tim Vaculik Says:

Bimbostien has skills. She does the theater of politics well when she doesnt overplay it like with her overly coy winking at the audience during the debate with Biden where she got pwned. She WILL have to work. The American people are not going to elect another dim bulb anytime soon. Bush soured us on that. She will have to hit the books and at least be able to pass my 8th grade civics class, stop making demonstrably stupid statements like she has foriegn policy experience because she can see Russia from Alaska. PERHAPS she can do it but I have seen no real capacity for the hard work it will take from her. As she is now she has no chance. If some smart people work with her and if SHE does the work that COULD change but she will STILL have a lot of baggage as for your answer to 100 it isnt a subjective judgement. She lied that is a proven FACT.

If Kristol and the other neocons want to indulge themselves in this fantasy that Palin is some sort of Moses who is going to lead them to the promised land, then we should not deflate their balloon. If she wants to run for President she will have to take on the other people in the primaries and they will savage her. The bloodletting in the Republican primaries will make the Dems comments look like a cake walk. She is already being held up to ridicule by McCain’s former staffers. There is no amount of bad press that will stop Kristol, et al, from trying to help her win the nomination. We know that she will alienate middle of the road voters as well as a good number of Republicans.

I think she and her husband have decided to grab the brass ring and snatch up as many $$$$$ as they can before she is no longer marketable. By giving up her governorship she is free to take as much money from speeches, interviews, etc., without running afoul of the law. This will continue as long as they command fees and when the merry-go-round stops, she and Todd will go back home with a truckload of cash. The money will be in the millions because she has 3 years before she will get slaughtered in a primary which will be an excuse for her to pick up and go back home, never to be heard from again.

Republicans, a Threat to the Republic?

Sarah Palin’s abrupt decision to resign as Alaska’s governor – and her rambling explanation – underscore again how the Republican Party over the past dozen years has put up candidates for top national offices who are unqualified or ill-suited for those sensitive positions.

Like Palin, George W. Bush was a charismatic underachiever who hadn’t accomplished much in life and showed little intellectual firepower but was nevertheless presented by the GOP as its candidate for one of the most powerful jobs on earth.

However, unlike Palin who lost her vice presidential bid, Bush took the presidency for two terms – in two dubious elections – with disastrous consequences for the nation.

Then, even amid the wreckage of the Bush administration’s final days, the Republican Party enthusiastically nominated first-term Alaska Gov. Palin to be a heartbeat away from the presidency, which they hoped would be filled by 72-year-old cancer survivor John McCain.

I won’t apologize for my life in NYC and the job I have. I know, you hate NYC, don’t you? Bunch of latte-drinking liberals here

    —–

pretty humorous, your claim to understanding tough labor through being a golf caddy. you don’t understand what makes this country work, do you?

you make no apologies because life in the bubble is good. you have no incentive to apologize for having life so easy.

the ged, just so you can get your ideology straight, is a government credential. and you’re a good candidate for being enlightened instead of educated. being educated means something if and only if you’re productive, and since you’re a consumer and not a producer, you’re not. your ego shows.

My theory is that she quit so she could have her own late night comedy show opposite to Letterman’s show in order to get revenge. What else could it be?

What is going to be most interesting is whether the Republicans go down the path lighted by Kristol to Palin. The only thing they have in common is both are ideologues. He is staking his credibility, if any, on a person who is not fit to even be a governor. Why he would endorse someone who hasn’t got a chance? Palin is less intellectually fit for the Presidency than even Bush. Possibly he thinks Palin is malleable enough to control if she did win. Even with advisers on the last election, Palin was out of control. The Vanity Fair article should serve as a warning about Palin’s personality. The fact that Kristol thinks Palin should run for the presidency should cause bells to go off in the heads of the Republican party. But one never knows because the party put Bush in office. And that turned out just fine. If Palin were to win, which I highly doubt, everyone needs rebuild their bomb shelters.

Palin could call a press conference, pull out a revolver and blow her own brains out on TV and Kristol would say it’s somehow a brilliant strategy. I haven’t seen a crush that embarrassing since the fifth grade.

I think it’s fair to say at this point that the “she has great political instincts” argument can be chucked out the window now. This is a retarded move, by any analysis. Ex-politicians don’t win Presidential primaries. You have to be currently employed to be taken seriously at the big kids’ table.

    Bobwurst Says:

…but then again you’ll do anything to avoid admitting you have no idea what I’m discussing…

I’ll gladly volunteer to admit that I have no idea WTF you’re talking about.

  367. grindermonkey says:

Unlike Bill Kristol Sarah Palin is a media phenomena. Her message with its fractured syntax resonates widely just as George W. Bush’s assault on logic did. She is Rush Limbaugh with lipstick.

If she remains as Alaska’s governor she risks administrative mistakes and misjudgments in an unnecessarily harsh spotlight. Without the burden of this office she is free to create the kind of fairy tale resume that appeals to fundamentalist, metaphysical voters. Do not attack her gender and do not minimize her appeal. Never underestimate the political power of stupidity.

We elected a smart man with more than enough votes to solve our domestic problems who has instead helped the corporations loot the treasury: a Vice President Palin could have accomplished as much.

  368. KayInMaine says:

I’m sure Kristol thinks that after Sarah’s ‘brilliant’ speech on Friday to quit is enough to keep the naysayers from going after her while she runs for the presidency!!!

Bah hahahahahahaha! Oh gawd too funny! Bah hahahahahahahaha! Oy yeah, like we’re going to stop because she mentioned Trig and our soldiers! Bah hahahahahahahahaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

  369. SouthernBeale says:

I would have loved to have read this post but that damn RePower America ad obscured half the headline and the first graf. Is there a reason blog ads must try to be as obnoxious as possible and interfere with the editorial copy? What’s wrong with putting an ad on the side of the page? Forcing hits has people try to close the ads so they can actually read content is dishonest.

    [rant]

  370. SouthernBeale says:

OK NOW that I have read the post: there is only one thing to say about the “Kristol Ball” : answer cloudy and please do NOT ask again later.

  371. Rodeskawler says:

The 20%ers that include ignorant religious fundies and exploitative rich folk still won’t be enough to elect Palin in 2112.

Palin is simply a moral booster for a party that normally cannot get anyone to show up. Too many Americans have figured out what the Republicans are about. Now they just have to figure out how many “Democrats” are actually Republican.

  372. KayInMaine says:

If Sarah Palin gets her own show out of this, she’ll quit halfway through the contract because she won’t be able to handle us bloggers.

  373. Perry logan says:

Sara has just figured this out sooner than her comrades that Republicans don’t like goverment work.

Repubs are very zealous when it comes to gaming the system–dumping voter registrations into the trash or repeating the latest smears against Democrats over and over again.

But when they finally land a job–forget about it. George W. Bush spent about 30% of his tenure on vacation, for which I am truly grateful. Ronald “Death Squad” Reagan was bascially unconscious for most of his eight years.

The Republican 109th Congress–the ones we threw out in 2006–worked from noon on Tuesday to late morning on Thursday. The legislation was written on K Street while the Congressmen chased pages around. No wonder our wounded vets were left to lie around in their own urine.

The pattern is clear: Republicans don’t believe in goverment, and they hate goverment work. Sara is a true leader–she’s showing her party where to go.

PS: Heritage Foundation report proves Torture is GOOD for You.

  374. Another Joe says:

Shannyn Moore states, regarding “little shop of horror’s” threats of lawmaker:

“I hope (a lawsuit) does come,” Moore told the local CBS affiliate in Anchorage on Saturday. “Because there is a line of attorneys out my email door that are asking to please be the one to depose Sarah Palin.”

Good one! Oh sorry, I misunderstood you were just trying to hawk that lame ass Privacy Center weren’t you?

  376. Rascalcat says:

After all of these years, is Bill Kristol finally right?

    Sadly, and predictably, no.

No one, not even with God as your running mate, can win against, “How do we know you won’t quit on us when the going gets tough?”

  377. Zooey says:

    ralph the wonder locust Says:

Well, Zoo, at least it was capable of recognizing that you were referring to it.

Do you think it was that greatgobofsnot, or the fact that it’s dimmer than Prod that tipped it off?
    July 5th, 2009 at 9:57 pm

Well ralph, judging from it’s work since last night, I’d have to say it recognized that it’s dimmer than Prod AND snot. It’s the only reasonable conclusion.

  378. osage says:

SARAH PALIN’S “POPULARITY” IS BASED ON HER GOOD LOOKS AND OR HER GENDER

Has there ever been a more shamelessly obvious example of a good looking woman exploiting her sex appeal to reach undeserved and or unwarranted heights of personal gain, adulation, notoriety and or celebrity than in the case of Sarah Palin? Paris Hilton? Anna Nicole Smith? Pamela Anderson? Eleanor Roosevelt? Golda Meir? Margaret Thatcher? Mother Theresa?

  379. TrueBlueMajority says:

Bill Kristol? Is he EVER right?

  380. Foxtrottango2 says:

Make no bones about it. The press loves Sarah Palin. She is their meal ticket. Ever since Sarah hit the airwaves, the press has made lots of money exposing her public and private life at her expense. They know the more she talks, the more she “tripps” and the more people pay to look at her. After all, her out-of-wed-lock grandson was named just for that purpose.

It’s a magnet for comedians, jokers, politicians, men and women. Just imagine the late night comedians without with Palin, Governor Sanford, Rush Limbaugh, Dick Cheney, GW Bush, and the whole lot of neo-cons!

The press gets involves because of the publicity which many (including me) pay to read and have a good laugh. After all, Sarah, her husband, her slow daughters and who can fergit the funny names. The laughter never stops. The press loves it!
