Palin threatens to sue media outlets for publication of investigation rumors.

In the wake of her resignation speech on Friday, Max Blumenthal reported for The Daily Beast that Sarah Palin may have quit her job in order to avert a major, yet-to-be-disclosed corruption scandal. Blumenthal explained that “political observers in Alaska are fixated on rumors that federal investigators…[are] searching for evidence that Palin and her husband Todd steered lucrative contracts to the well-connected company in exchange for gifts like the construction of their home.” In response, Palin’s attorney sent a letter to several major news outlets threatening to sue for republishing rumors of any federal investigation:

Gov. Sarah Palin’s attorney threatened Saturday to sue mainstream news organizations if they publish “defamatory” stories relating to whether Palin is under federal investigation.

This is to provide notice to Ms. Moore, and those who re-publish the defamation, such as Huffington Post, MSNBC, the New York Times and The Washington Post, that the Palins will not allow them to propagate defamatory material without answering to this in a court of law,” Van Flein warned, citing Alaska liberal blogger Shannyn Moore.

The LA Times reports today that “the FBI’s Alaska spokesman said the bureau had no investigation into Palin for her activities as governor, as mayor or in any other capacity.” “There is absolutely no truth to those rumors that we’re investigating her or getting ready to indict her,” Special Agent Eric Gonzalez told the Times. It is not clear if this also applies to rumored IRS investigations.

gee… I wonder how they’d feel if the President’s attorneys threatened to sue over spreading “defamatory” rumors relating to whether he “pals around with terrorists”?

My guess is all bravado and not law suit. Does she want to invite further investigation on all the issues? She’s had more than her 15 minutes of fame and unless she’s interested in an “article” in Playboy she can go go raise her kids and shot wolves from a helicopter.

Failin’ Palin’s going to sue the media for doing their job?

As her mentor and apparent role model used to say when he was playing (p)Resident: “Bring it on!”

This will assure the Pentacostal Pork-barrel Princess of Wasilla that she will remain exactly where she wants to be . . . squarely in the center of public awareness.

My advice to her is to just quietly take the deal that led to her resignation. Little Sarah, quit protesting so loudly. It will only lead to the truth coming out about the bribes you’ve taken, the business you’ve steered, the vendettas you have pursued, etc.

Just leave the stage quietly, Little Sarah. You’ll be alot happier that way . . . and so will we.

  7. DanCaveman says:

kind of funny how her putting out this “law suit” then allows everyone to publish the information as a story as why she may sue :D.

Another instance of her not being able to keep her mouth shut. The first I heard (other than my own speculation) of the “rumors” is her lawsuit mentioned here.

    QUITTING IS WINNING!

REPORTING OBJECTIVE FACTS ABOUT CORRUPTION IN ALASKA, TED STEVENS, AND VECO IS ACTIONABLE

IF A SPECIAL AGENT SAYS IT, IT HAS TO BE TRUE FOR THE ENTIRE ORGANIZATION AND ALL OTHER ORGANIZATIONS TOO!

It is time that America take the NEXT step towards greatness and EVERYONE SHOULD QUIT AND BECOME WINNERS!

That’s some pretty good doublespeak, even by repug standards – ABANDON THE ONLY REAL POLITICAL RESPONSIBILITIES YOU HAVE EVER HAD IS SUCCESSFULLY FULFILLING THEM!

And it makes her an even “better” candidate for the White House!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

“Losing is WINNING” and “ONLY WINNERS QUIT!!!!!!!”

And doing over a long holiday weekend that celebrates the tenacious battles that others have made to create our nation – SHEER BRILLIANCE!!!!!!!

I only wish it was dur chimpfuhrer that “catapulted the propaganda” that “quitting is for WINNERS”!

  12. Another Joe says:

It’s time to look to the LA Times for their verification of their “source” at the FBI?? What qualified source would disclose details of an ongoing investigation? This sounds very bogus to me – especially on a holiday weekend where contact with credible sources is non-existent.

If one is to presume that this so-called ‘verification’ by the FBI exists is that it could not include unknown investigations by separate and individual branches of law enforcement – the DOJ and the IRS.

The la times has been a propaganda tool for many many years – anyone surprised that they are leading the cover by creating the excuse/justification to threaten people that are trying to report legitimate news?

  13. DallasNE says:

This is highly unusual and I don’t know how to read it. Is she really that thin skinned or does it go to something deeper. She is a public figure and is sounding a lot like Richard Nixon, who said after his loss in 1962 that “you won’t have Richard Nixon to kick around anymore”. Chilling the media worked for Nixon as he fashioned a comeback that we all regretted. Is that the route Sarah Palin is going?

  14. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

This is the action of a typical republican these days. They can spew all of their hatred, all of their misleading lies but when others start pointing out their lies, their hypocrisy, their ignorance, these bullies start threatening others with law suits.

I’m dealing with some assclown now at a local blog whose threatening a lawsuit with claims of slander and defamation of character. I laugh because this assclown has been banned from that site and returns under multiple monikers to attack, insult and stalk his “enemies” online.

These people are all just cowards and bullies. When the truth gets to be too much for them, when the picture they paint of themselves gets exposed, they run to their lawyers and scream “lawsuit”. It’s all so pathetic really.

  15. SlappyBastinado says:

I posted this angle with in minutes of the news. Palin will sue “personally” not the media outlet they work for or write for but personally those who distort, make up stories about, demonize and other wise attempt to destroy on false pretenses the lives of her or her family. IT’S ABOUT DAMN TIME! When pundits, bloggers and so called journalists who make false accusations or other falsifications are required to hire lawyers and pay thousands of dollars for them out of their own pockets the whole thing changes……..it will sure change the complexion of this site along with the Olbermanns and Lettermans of the world….HAHAHAHAHAHAHA! Oh what fun we will all have!

  16. angels81 says:

This is the action of a typical grifter. Soak your mark, which happenend to be the state of Alaska and its people, and move on to the next sucker. If the rightwing thinks she’s their gal, they will be disappointed in the end.

Yep. This is all publicity stunt. The idea that a public figure could sue “the internet” (ok, the “threat” is a bit more specific) is laughable under NY Times v Sullivan. If she is dumb enough to file a defamation suit, she gets to have her deposition taken. Heh. That involves giving statements under oath, Sarah. You sure about that?

  20. nanlichi says:

Here’s one for you Sloppy Bastard, the rumor is that Sarah’s computer had pictures of kiddy porn on it. And the hook is that it was pictures of her 16 year old daughter and Levi getting it on on the couch in Sarah’s living room. Not only did she condone premarital and underage sex, she filmed it!!

That’s just wrong. No wonder she quit.

  21. Another Joe says:

It’s gonna take an awful lot of propaganda to maintain the lie that quitting is winning and was a “bold” and “shrewd” move.

It is also gonna take some threats of litigation to keep some people from talking about known facts about corruption in Alaska.

  22. angels81 says:

Slappy, do you have any idea how hard it is to sue a news outlet? The courts have almost always sided with the press. The couts ruled that faux news had the right to lie. Palin thinks she’s spent alot of money now, wait to she trys to sue the media.

  23. Uncle Fester Lurks says:

So Slappy is against freedom of speech, against the media and journalists speaking or publishing the truth ONLY WHEN it involves exposing someone on the right. But it’s okay for the media and journalists (Fox, Drudge, WSJ) to lie about democrats or progressives.

  25. Daddy-O says:

A threat to be sued by Sarah Palin = listed on Nixon’s enemies list

    Bring it on!

  26. Another Joe says:

Is sarah palin a corrupt embezzeler, adulterer, and now, according to nanlichi, a producer of child porn?

I just don’t know, but I will defend the rights of citizens to discuss the conduct of their elected officials and other public officials.

I do not know if palin produces pornography with children or perhaps some animals. But if she did make videos of sex acts between consdenting humans and mammals out on the farm or wilderness, I’m OK with that – I really am.

Now that she has shown us that taking the “high road” means “quitting”, that “only winners quit”, and that the real losers are the folks that take responsibilities to others seriously, she will have a lot of time to do some corruptin’, adulterin’, porn producin’, and even more slander and libel of her own.

And I am OK with that, because, it she used her political influences to enrich her family and embezzle directly or indirectly from the public coffers, that is obviously much more acceptable to her base than the pornography even if it does feature her own children or animals that have given the most meaningful consent that is possible for said species.

  29. nigel says:

All the papers did was report factually that there are rumors, They didn’t say she is under investigation, just that there are rumors that she is. So there is no liable.

However if she is successful think what it would mean to talk radio or opinion shows. What about political adverts? Think how much money Limbaugh and Hanitty would have to pay out. Palin herself would be in trouble for things she accuses others of and propagation or rumors. I bet she forwards chain emails.

It’s scary to think that she could have been one heartbeat away from being president. If we thought Bush politicized the justice dept. just imagine what she would do.

Besides, once the think-tanks prop up her book sales a’la ann coulter by buying up insane quantities to place on NYT bestseller list, there isn’t gonna be a consistent revenue stream there.

When you defend yourself against embezzlement and have to quit your elected position to do it, you can expect to spend BIG BUCKS on lawyers.

How many members of the national “liberal media” have filed ethics complaints against Sarah Palin in Alaska?

The reason that Sarah Palin and her adoring sycophants rail against the national “liberal media” is because they need an omnipotent bogeyman to blame in order to deflect the fact that her lack of ETHICS is the reason that ETHICS COMPLAINTS are being filed against her by ALASKANS.

The ethics complaints being filed against Sarah Palin aren’t coming from people outside of ALASKA……they are coming from people “inside” ALASKA.

ALASKA is heavily dominated by REPUBLICAN politicians and voters. That means that the vast majority of the ethics complaints being filed against Sarah Palin are being filed by her fellow REPUBLICANS.

The other consideration is Palin would have to give a deposition and that would open up her defending the charges about her home. Not only would she have to testify, but also her husband. I am sure she does not want to talk about collateral matters in a deposition because they may embarrass her.

Libel requires a number of components to be present in order for the case to be viable in court, including knowingly portraying a false statement to be true (as opposed to presenting a speculative statement worthy of further investigation). Successfully suing the press for libel against an elected official is doubly difficult.

No surprise that Palin does not understand the nuances of defamation law. She still thinks that the First Amendment is designed to protect her right of free speech (as an elected government official) without being criticized or condemned by the media. Ass-backwards as usual.

I also heard there was a Bigfoot sited in McNary. Pass it on.

  85. Mike Hunt says:

Well….the stupid bi.tch must have done something quite illegal if she has her lawyers out threatening to sue someone for making comments. Seems like that is a typical family values party way of operating. If I can find the audio for sale somewhere I’m going to send Sarah a recording of the gates slamming shut at Leavenworth …. just so she can plan for the future.

  86. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Well I guess President Obama should sue Sarah. After all she told some terrific lies about him in front of thousands of people and on camera. And she had malicious intent and she was trying to do him harm. Actually I believe she was trying to incite violence against him as well and she continues to to so today.

  87. Doodlebug Shayne says:

Oh what fun we will all have!
    _____________________________________________________________

Oh, I think when lawsuits start flying for the broadcast and print of false rumors and empty accusations intended to defame, the Fox News and the Limbaughs of the world will be the biggest targets — much in the way that a fly will go to the biggest pile of crap. Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly will be faded memories before the system even notices Keith Olbermann — let alone Think Progress.

Well, if it’s true that someone can sue an individual in the media for lying about you, then President Obama has a very good case to sue Sean Hannity, Rush Limbaugh and Bill O’Reilly. But, he won’t do that because he knows that when you are a public figure people are going to lie about you.
    ========================================

Well, it be true! Obama should quit and get on with it…..he won’t even need to hire an attorney ….theres already one in the family!

So why would President Obama resign? He’s an adult. He understands that when you become a public figure you open yourself up to people lying about you. You don’t see whining about how unfair the MSM is to him. He has mentioned how obsessed with him Fixed is, but that’s a fact that can’t be disputed.

President Obama is not a quitter. Sarah Palin is.

Well, this takes her out of the running for the Presidency. Randomly up and quitting on people doesn’t look good on your resume. Besides, only people currently holding an office of some kind ever win primaries. So, she’s done for.

  168. Rodeskawler says:

Just stick with the facts, mainstream media. Palin is a moron.

  169. iggy says:

I can’t stand Sarah Palin – she’s a lunatic. But speculating on television that someone is being investigated by the FBI when you don’t have an ounce of confirmation about such a thing is the height of irresponsible journalism, and one more example of how horrible the mainstream press has gotten.

Woodward and Bernstein had to source everything before publishing accusations about Nixon. Today, all you need is one clown guessing and another clown doubting, and that’s all the “balance” that’s required.

The dingbat from Wasilla doesn’t have a valid lawsuit – but she’s right about this one. You don’t report something like that when you’re frigging guessing. That’s not journalism.

  170. thebabbster says:

Oh please oh please oh please oh please let there be an investigation about her

    AH!! It just hit me.

    Eugene v. Debs

It’s been bugging me for months, because I knew that it sounded familiar.

It was a famous Sedition case from the early 1920s, in which a political activist was jailed for denouncing militarism, and the Supreme Court upheld it.

I find this interesting in light of the threat of lawsuit, as both this case and this threat are in direct contradiction to the First Amendment protections.

So tell me, Eugene – did you mean to do that, or is it a coincidence?
