Powell Hits Back At Limbaugh: Calling Sotomayor A ‘Reverse Racist’ Is ‘Nonsense’

Last May, hate radio talker Rush Limbaugh called Judge Sonia Sotomayor, President Obama’s Supreme Court nominee, a “reverse racist,” referring to Sotomayor’s past comment that a “wise Latina woman with the richness of her experience would more often than not reach a better conclusion than a white male who hasn’t lived that life.”

Today on CNN, former Secretary of State Colin Powell criticized such comments. Saying that Sotomayor is a “gifted” and an “accomplished woman” with “a judicial record that seems to be balanced and tries to follow the law,” Powell added that calling her a “reverse racist” is “nonsense”:

POWELL: What we can’t continue to have is to have somebody like a Judge Sotomayor…called a “racist,” or a “reverse racist” and she ought to withdraw her nomination because we’re mad at her. Fortunately the senators who will sit on this hearing in the Judiciary Committee after a few days of this kind of nonsense said, “Let’s slow down. Let’s examine her qualifications and the way we’re supposed to at a confirmation hearing.”

When host John King asked about the GOP’s “sensitivity” toward minorities, Powell took aim at Limbaugh directly, firing back at his claim that Powell only supported Obama’s candidacy for president because he is black:

POWELL: And when you have non-elected officials such as we have in our party who immediately shout racism or somebody who is quite prominent in the media says the only basis upon which I could possibly have supported Obama was because he was black and I was black even though I laid out my judgment on the candidates, then we still have a problem.

King later noted that Limbaugh has also said that Powell is no longer a Republican. “Mr. Limbaugh of course is entitled to his opinion but he’s not on any membership committee,” Powell replied, adding, “He doesn’t decide who I am or what I am no more than I decide who he is or what he is.” Watch it:

Transcript:

POWELL: [Judge Sonia Sotomayor] seems like a gifted and accomplished woman. She certainly has an open and liberal bent of mind but that’s not disqualifying. But she seems to have a judicial record that seems to be balanced and tries to follow the law. And so I hope we do have a spirited set of hearings. And Supreme Court confirmation hearings tend to always meet that standard. And she ought to be asked about everything from both the left and the right. What we can’t continue to have is to have somebody like a Judge Sotomayor who is announced, and based on one simple tricky but nonetheless case that the Supreme Court has now decided have her called a “racist,” or a “reverse racist” and she ought to withdraw her nomination because we’re mad at her.

Fortunately the senators who will sit on this hearing in the Judiciary Committee after a few days of this kind of nonsense said, “Let’s slow down. Let’s examine her qualifications and the way we’re supposed to at a confirmation hearing.” […]

And when you have non-elected officials such as we have in our party who immediately shout racism or somebody who is quite prominent in the media says the only basis upon which I could possibly have supported Obama was because he was black and I was black even though I laid out my judgment on the candidates, then we still have a problem. […]

KING: The guy who used the term “reverse racist” — you didn’t name him but it’s Rush Limbaugh. He has said some not so favorable things about you, saying, “this guy says he’s Republican but then he supported Obama. So he’s not really Republican.” You’re a Republican?

POWELL: Yes and Mr. Limbaugh of course is entitled to his opinion but he’s not on any membership committee. He doesn’t decide who I am or what I am no more than I decide who he is or what he is. We’ve had this running debate let’s call it that and he’s entitled to his opinion and I’m entitled to mine.

  1. Daddy-O says:

I’m not quite ready to forgive Powell for telling lies to the UN and the world to justify Bush’s Excellent Adventure, from which we have yet to extricate ourselves.

Only if it ends up with more votes for my team, and even then…ugh.

  2. ralph the wonder locust says:

    I’m with you, Daddy-O.

Powell’s credibility will be forever tarnished with me, but he’s still a reasoned and moderate voice from the Right. If Limbaugh’s histrionics convinces people that anyone who calmly considers issues and is capable of deviating from Right-wing orthodoxy must necessarily be an Independent or a Democrat, that’s fine with me.

  3. Another Joe says:

Legit post, but please be careful – colon is still “catapulting the propaganda”.

Last week, he proclaimed that OBAMA was spending too much money.

Of course, he is more responsible than anyone for the presentation of lies that got us into a TRILLION DOLLAR MESS in Iraq.

He has never taken responsibility for that and now he is shootin’ his mouth out about spending.

He is a lying liar, always has been, and always will be.

  4. tokin librul says:

NOBODY who uses the phrase “Reverse discrimination” about racial relations in the USofA, and does so without dripping irony or utter contempt, is worth the ounce of lead it would take to dispatch ‘em…

Powell is, if anything, being way too kind in his description of Rusba, the Butt…

I would raise a shrine to the person who feeds Limbaugh his teeth…

  5. vinylspear says:

Question: What do Michael Steele and Colin Powell have in common?

Answer: They are both tools that have been played by neocon republicans.

  6. Daddy-O says:

Thanks, ralph. After watching the GOP run rampant over my country for the last decade, I will make the concession to ‘use’ Powell to get more votes, if that’s what this results in.

Powell’s own history is pretty dirty. He was one of the Pentagon investigators who didn’t see a crime when the My Lai file crossed his desk; he passed it on to his superiors, and if it hadn’t been for Sy Hersh, no one would have heard about it.

He was also right there in the basement of Reagan’s White House with Ollie North, I believe, as Pentagon liasson, while the Iran/Contra crimes were cooked up. Naturally, he knew where all the bodies were buried, so next stop Joint Chiefs Chair, and Secretary of State for the Bush Crime Family.

But he IS a voice of moderation, whether he’s an accomplice of the Worst Presidents Ever or not. After the Bushes, I propose a Constitutional amendment that says NO MORE PRESIDENTS NAMED GEORGE as well as Bush. We’ll never get anything better than the first one, so why bother?

    ;-)

  7. majii says:

Powell is right to speak out on the way republicans are treating the Sotomayor nomination, although it won’t cause them to think about it or to change their ways. This is just the way they do business.

What I have taken offense to, regarding Powell, is his role as an alarmist in the amount of $ being spent to turn the economy around. Where were Powell and the rest of the republicans when Bush, Jr. was increasing the deficit with two unnecessary wars in which he played a front and center role? He is a prime example of why I do not listen when dittoheads speak. IMO, he is angling for re-acceptace into the republican fold, and I wish him luck with that. I am black, but there is no way that I will ever align myself with a group of people that is composed of racists, homophobes, pro-life under ALL conditions, fear-mongerers, war advocates, and hypocrites, with faux Christianity and family values.

  8. calavzma says:

is this really hitting back at limbaugh?

isn’t it more that colin powell doesn’t have completely ridiculous opinions on this issue?

isn’t it more that colin powell, unlike rush limbaugh, is not a racist?

its not like limbaugh is the only dumbass spouting this reverse racism nonsense

  9. P.D. says:

This is called projection, I think. Limbaugh is racist and his viewers know it. This is how they justify their own racism. I find it ironic how Limbaugh has the balls to call somebody a racist. He has crossed the border into insanity.

  10. Laszlo Panaflex says:

“He’s not the boss of me.”

Who listens to this schmuck anyway? February 5, 2003 was his last word for anyone with functioning faculties, and the GOP considers him an apostate. He’s a doormat for the GOP, yet he tails along like a lovesick puppy.

Musta been tough to book real guests on a holiday weekend.

  11. katy says:

    welcome back, TP!!!

leave us with a good one this sunday, please!
one more, at least… grassley was a complete dick on FTN…

enjoy the rest of your weekend… thanks!

  12. Leftside Annie says:

I may have a teensy ounce of respect for Colin Powell – but only just. He only speaks out when it doesn’t cost him anything.

Colin – if you want to redeem your honor and your reputation, it’s going to take a whole lot more truthtelling than this.

  13. eyeswideopen1 says:

Powell is one of the few Republicans I still have some respect for.

With all the problems we have is is beyond stupid to even be talking about Limbaugh. He represents EVERYTHING we should NOT be doing. Whether it is wasting time talking about him or any of his idiotic rhetoric.

  14. spencers mom says:

I wish Eric Holder would have a good behind closed doors discussion with Colin Powell about what he knew and when he knew it. He’s the chink in the BushCo armour and I get the sense that he wants to come clean.

    Just a hunch.

    PEACE

  15. DallasNE says:

Powell sounds like the northeastern Republican that he is. It’s just in the current Republican party he cannot hold office because he doesn’t pass the litmus test for national Republicans. That goes to the likes of Gov. Sanford and Sen. Ensign.

  16. dbadass says:

In fairness is it that easy to assume you are so just that you could never be conflicted…

  17. Buckie Boy says:

I’m entitled to my opinion that Rush is a abuser of underage male prostitutes in the Dominican Republic.

  18. eastcoastprogressive says:

It’s pathetic that a hate jock loser gets even a brief mention on a national news program. That said Powell is right, it is absolute nonsense and anyone entertaining that nonsense is a moron, including our sad corporate media.

  19. Levi the Dungbeetle says:

    Talk about a progressive fantasy.

Powell turns states evidence against the corporatist fascist establishment and takes Bush and Cheney down hard.

  20. Zooey says:

I’m with ralph & Daddy-O. I’m still pissed at Powell for his massive f uck up on the lead up o the Iraq War, but he’s one of the few voices of reason remaining on the right.

Keep calling out the racists, Gen Powell!

  21. Del Capslock says:

Limbaugh thrives in the one-way environment of pontificating unchallenged in an isolated studio. All it would take would be for Powell, or whomever else Limbaugh has recently smeared, to challenge him publically, along the lines of “I suspect that Mr. Limbaugh is a coward at heart. Therefore, I am challenging him to meet me in a public forum to discuss his accusations man-to-man. I hope he accepts the challenge, but I’m near certain that my suspicions will be confirmed and he will not.” It would be fun to see Limbaugh’s squirming response.

  22. krystalview says:

Daddy-O Says I’m not quite ready to forgive Powell for telling lies to the UN and the world to justify Bush’s Excellent Adventure, from which we have yet to extricate ourselves.

The only way Powell can regain his dignity and credibility is to testify against the barbaric war criminals that humiliated him by feeding him the lies he spewed in front of the entire World.
Did he ever apologize for that? If not, he needs to do it publicly. Preferably at the United Nations.

  23. pbeeg says:

He’s angling for the republican nomination in 2012.

He’s going to present himself as the salvation of the Republican Party–the only one that can pull it back from oblivion. And he’s going to do it with the quiet backing of a lot of the rich and powerful.

The most dangerous man in the Republican Party.

  25. sscncturn64 says:

Rush is definitly a racist. He does not care about our country and he constantly lies to push his own agenda.
I dont think it will be a sad day in America when this fat piece of sht has a heart attack and kicks the bucket.
I for one will celebrate. He was and is all for the war in Iraq wich was based on lies. Countless lives have been lost and destroyed, and he doesnt give a rats ass about any of them.
    Fck you limpdick.

  26. WaltTheMan says:

    krystalvieew,
Powell did admit that his WMD presentation at the UN was a mistake.

  27. MapleStreet says:

If Powell goes back and apologizes to Limbaugh, then I will even loose the minute amount of respect which I may be able to find for him,

OTOH – thinking of recent repub history, who is running the office pool for when Powell will apologize ? I want to put my money on 2 days and 3 hours

  28. WaltTheMan says:

Oops, wrong reference – try here.

  29. WaltTheMan says:

    Once again, try here.

  30. Willy says:

    Rush is a reverse liberal.
Rush is a reverse intelligent commentator.
Rush is a reverse non-abuser of boys.
Rush is a reverse non-abuser of drugs.
    Rush is a reverse non-racist.
    Rush is reverse sane.
    Rush is a reverse humanitarian.
Rush is a reverse lover of racial and cultural diversity.
    etc., etc.

(Off topic: Palin is a reverse quitter.)

All one has to do to be a Republican is to say the opposite of what is reality.

  31. laur says:

Although Powell did say that his deceitful presentation at the UN was something like his darkest hour, it seems that it was more of a personal reflection. It is possible, however, that Powell could be the GOP’s most credible candidate for a run for the presidency in 2012. Just being relatively rational could be the criterion. Of course, it would be interesting to see how his rallies might look if he does run against Obama. There are still some people who would never vote for an African-American.

  32. Dawn1954 says:

With all this rhetoric about Colin Powell and Limbaugh is that Limbaugh thinks that if you are a moderate Republican you are not a Republican, now who in the hell died and left this junkie boss…

I have a prediction here: President Obama will end the two wars by 2012… He will dissarm North Korea and have world peace… Nice dreams, huh, but guess what it could happen…

Obama by the way will get Osama bin Laden soon.. He is allowing Joint Chief of Staff who knows what they are doing to do the right thing and SOD Gates does like working for Obama.By the way, they do keep him in the loop about the progress. He is not shooting off his mouth to the media and placing more people in mortal danger…

  33. Jackie says:

Powell will still have to deal with his part in the illegal Iraq invasion and the torture. Yes Powell openly lied to the United Nations for the Bush Administration and putting his reputation on the line. Now it’s hard for anyone to believe a word he says. Talking about Rush the druggie Limbaugh is a waste of time. Powell did his best to suck up to Obama but our President knows when someone is damaged goods. Rice and Powell will be remembered for their part in the biggest crime done by an Administration since Nixon. Yes the GOP loves to protect their criminal friends and make excuses for their action.

  34. dasm says:

I’m amazed at the hypocrisy of posters here– they claim to be progressive, but they refuse ever to forgive nor try to understand why someone said what they said at a given moment. These are NOT true progressives. If someone makes a change, understands what they did wrong, & wants to rectify that, why do posters continue to defame them? Powell stated long ago that his speech (the one so-called progressives continue to blast) was the lowest point of his political career. Good Lord, accept his apology & move on. Apparently he’s on our side now– why destroy him?

  35. EugeneDebs says:

    dasm

I dont think that is hypocrisy. I think overall Powell is a decent guy. That doesnt mean he doesnt have to answer for REAL blots on his record. What he did at the UN being prime among them. It is irrelevant as I dont think he will ever run for President. His wife is delicate and he loves her to death. She doesnt want it. I dont think he will do it.

  36. nofreelunch says:

Rush Limbaugh has said time and time again that he believes every person should have an equal opportunity to achieve as much of the American dream as their talent, ambition, and work ethic will allow. Doesn’t sound racist to me.

  37. Jackie says:

Dasm your are correct we should just accept Powell’s apology and move on but it’s hard when you have lost someone in Iraq knowing it was based on lies. Now it’s seems easy to just act like Dick Cheney and forget about the thousands of soldiers who died thinking they were protecting the US from Iraq’s WMD. Yes and the thousands of soldiers who were injured and will never have a full life. Those who believed Powell and Bush would not lie to our troops or the American people. I’ve been to so many funerals it sad and Walter Reed Hospital is still not corrected. I’ve heard the lies told to our troops since Bush sent they to Iraq and listen to stories not reported on the News. But for Americans lip service we support our troops or putting a sticker on the car/flag outside the house is about enough. So you accept the apology from Powell and the rest of the Bush Administration because the lost isn’t that important then moving on. It’s so easy for Americans to move on because they didn’t have to service in this illegal War. Being safe at home and living your life is what is important, who cares about those who serve and wear the uniform. Now as few sign up to service in the Military as no one wants to be lied to and give their life for people who can so easily cause so much death/injury with just an apology. The dead soldiers can’t hear the apology.

  38. EugeneDebs says:

    nofreelunch Says:

Few racists make every single thing that comes out of their mouth racist. However Rush clearly IS racist. The guy who told a caller to take that bone out of his nose and call him back. Who said the only reason Donovan McNabb was considered good because he is black even though his stats made him in the top three or four QBs in the league, who said Powell only supported Obama because he is black IS a racist. He is also a liar a fool, a propagandist and bad for America. If you really take him seriously then seek the help of a mental health professional immediatly

  39. krystalview says:

Walt, in the link you provided (thank you) Powell states:

“I’m the one who presented it on behalf of the United States to the world, and (it) will always be a part of my record. It was painful. It’s painful now,” he said. He said he felt “terrible” at being misinformed.

Then he goes on to defend George Tenet:

Mr Tenet “did not sit there for five days with me misleading me,” he said.
“He believed what he was giving to me was accurate.”

He felt terrible at being misinformed….

That’s an apology? Then he defends Tenet? WTF!

    Not good enough!

    Hmm… a simplistic, unarguable platitude…

Yep, that proves it. Good work, nfl!

Apparently that entire backlog of racist rhetoric in Limbaugh’s bloated body of work is meaningless in the light of a facile encapsulation of a blandly generalized sentiment.

  41. krystalview says:

Jackie @ #37 Very well said!

Sometime in the future that I hope is near Powell will have to tell the truth and the whole truth or be charged as a collaborator in an illegal war.

It’s time for him to stand for the truth or stand with the RePunigScum Party of liars, child molesters and racist, facist, whore-hopping, idiotic, Godless Corporation sucking Christianistas.

  44. Another Joe says:

dasm – colon is NOT on our side. Many have addressed this here today. He did not apologize for lies to Iraq and certainly did ABSOLUTELY NOTHING to set that situation right.

See my earlier post above – he is hypocritically takin’ jabs at Obama too.

  45. Mathazar says:

Can someone please define reverse racist. Is that like a reverse bigot, or a reverse misogynist, or reverse xenophobe.

    I’d really like to know.

  46. Another Joe says:

Gosh – I cost this nation more than a trillion dollars, MUCH MORE than a trillion dollars when you figure in the cost of servicing that debt.

More than ONE MILLION innocent Iraqi women and children have been killed.

We have used depleted uranium weapons that will actually poison that land and create health problems for many, many generations.

And my lies allowed BILLIONS AND BILLIONS to be looted from the federal treasury, often TOTALLY UNACCOUNTED FOR!

And I didn’t really say I was sorry, nor did I do anything to CHANGE anything that my actions are directly responsible for.

But geeeeeeee…. you “progressives” should forgive me and worship me.

It will make me popular on the bobblehead circuit again when I criticize the current administration for the follies, all the economic problems, treason, war crimes, and crimes against humanity left over from MY work with the previous administration.

  47. Leftside Annie says:

Dasm – IMO, if Colin Powell *truly* regretted his part in leading this nation into war on lies – he would be doing everything in his power to see the liars brought to justice.

    He is not.

Therefore, he is not forgiven. He is not redeemed – nor is he “on our side” or ever to be trusted. Period.

  48. Another Joe says:

colon never did anything but indicate he doesn’t feel good about how his lying about Iraq affected HIM!

Maybe you should spend some time on the Google, looking up Rush quotes.

Rush can say he believes anything he wants, and your comment about what Rush allegedly said sounds wonderful. I know I’m feeling all warm and fuzzy right now.

With that comment, Rush joins most other conservatives who talk the talk, but don’t walk the walk. Sure, there are very few laws (except those against gay rights) remaining on the books saying that someone is not allowed the opportunity to work hard, get an education, and do well in life. The fact remains that not all Americans have equal opportunity in this country, no matter what idyllic things Rush says.

Here’s an analogy: Two runners are at the starting line; they are both at their peak of fitness; and they are equal in size, strength and motivation. The starting gun fires, and they both take off at top speed. Suddenly, one runner stops suddenly and falls to the ground. That runner has a ball and chain attached to one leg. The officials stop the race and remove the ball and chain from the runner’s leg, and declare that the race should resume. The problem is that the unencumbered runner is halfway around the track, while the other is ten feet from the starting line.

The good thing about this scenario is that the officials can be urged to start the race over, and assuming the now un-chained runner is not injured, they can race on an equal basis.

    In life, not so much.

  51. MapleStreet says:

Zooey, you may have to be clearer for “free lunch”.

That is, in the race, did the kids in the Bush clan start off even with everyone else, or did they get a 300 yd head start on the others in teh 500 yd race ? Could daddy Bush introduce them at will to people that I would not a chance of getting in to see ? Did George have resources to bail him out if the business went bad (kind of like the Steve Martin joke on how easy it is to make a million dollars – take $10 million and invest in the bank for 2 years). Could the Bush’s afford a private boarding school ? Could the Bushes benefit from a connection with the Saudi Royalty ? etc. et.

  52. pbeeg says:

Equality of opportunity–a colorblind society–why shore, everybody wants that.

But the racist right’s implementation of that tends to be:

    Any preferential (or compensatorial) treatment for a minority is to be shouted down;

while any discriminatory or oppressive practice is to be ignored or denied at the top of one’s voice.

The official line is that no aid should be given to African Americans because all that racism ended oh so long ago, and they’re just trying to game the system now.

That position relies on waving one’s hands frantically in front of any racist incidents that persist in cropping up. Jena, LA? No no no! Look away lookaway! Pictures of the White House with a watermelon patch out front? Look! Dancing with the Stars is on!

Racism not only still exists in this country, it’s still rampant. I’ve seen it leap out of people’s eyes as I talk to them/ I’ve seen it rear up like a cobra when I walked into a room with a friend who was a black man married to a white woman. It had a physical sound to it. It helped kill him.

It’s a dishonest tactic that works on some liberals who lead lives surrounded by enlightened friends. They just can’t believe that anybody feels that way any more!
But no matter where they live, if they gave me three days, no matter what town they’re in, I could show them the reality.

  53. Tundra says:

    Powell is right.

regardless of what he said in the past, regardless of what he’s done in the past, in this instance he is right.

I know it’s hard for some people to accept that without throwing “this that and the other” into it. Sometimes things aren’t as simple as “He’s a Republican he lies!!!!!!!”

How open minded is someone that can’t even say “Calling Sotomayer a reverse racist is nonsense” just because Powell said it.

  54. Tundra says:

did the kids in the Bush clan start off even with everyone else, or did they get a 300 yd head start on the others in teh 500 yd race ?

Yeah or the Kennedy kids, or Kerry’s kids or Clinton’s kids or coming soon Obama’s kids.

  55. EugeneDebs says:

    Tundra

  56. grindermonkey says:

From a tactical point of view this is exactly the kind of internecine strife and soul searching that progressives should be happy to see in the Republican party, the Grover Norquist party of no government whatsoever. Norquistian doctrine would do away with the Supreme Court altogether. General Powell is remarkably aloof from his chosen party’s core.

  57. Rodeskawler says:

Just apologize for lying to the UN and getting our nation into an illegal invasion and occupation. Then I might be able to respect you somewhat.

I should point out that it is a lot easier for a Republican who is not currently in an elected position to stand up to Limbaugh.

  58. Parlezvous says:

It’s obvious that Cheney and Limbaugh an not mainstream Republicans and should form their own party. The Nazi party comes to mind but I’m not sure that the Nazi leadership in this country would have them.

    Ye gods!

  60. Daddy-O says:

You must be joking, dasm. Unconditional forgiveness = progressive values? You might as well demand that I bend over backwards.

I listed THREE INCREDIBLE STORIES that tell the truth about Colin Powell. He has been up to his neck in some of the most sordid incidents of our nation’s past–My Lai, Iran/Contra and the illegal and bankrupting Iraq Invasion.

He may be pro-choice and anathema to Rush Limbaugh–but he’s no angel. I refuse to accept his apology for the death and destruction his lies caused.

I accept George Wallace’s apology he rendered at the end of his life. It was sincere because he was almost dead, and politics had nothing to do with it, and history taught that man a lesson as he watched the entire nation change its attitude towards race. He EARNED his forgiveness.

Just because Powell admitted what we dirty f**king hippies knew all along, doesn’t mean we forgive him for the death, destruction, debt and loss of our nation’s reputation he abetted and enabled. His crime was even worse than that of George Wallace’s–and when it comes to brown people suffering, JUST AS RACIST.

  61. Daddy-O says:

And: Pointing out OUR supposed hypocrisy is okay, but pointing out Powell’s actual hypocrisy is…destroying him?

Bull, dasm. You typed and sent before you knew all the pertinent facts. I don’t care about Colin Powell; I don’t need him to advance our agenda. He’s irrelevant–and an accomplice in the worst foreign policy debacle in our nation’s history, while he was Secretary of State, for crissakes!

He is clinging to what’s left of his ‘reputation’ that is completely undeserved, for reasons I’ve listed.

  62. Daddy-O says:

Hey, Tundra…nobody said Colin Powell shouldn’t be allowed to say what he said. Your little point here is completely irrelevant.

Not for nothing did Harry Belafonte call Colin Powell a House N*gg*r. Right at the height of the illegal Iraq Invasion. And Harry was right.

Sure. Colin has a right to say whatever he wants. So do I, and you’d better pay attention to the facts BEHIND the myth of the man.
