Senate Finance Committee may deny access to abortion.

As Sen. Max Baucus (D-MT) prepares to unveil the Senate Finance Committee’s bipartisan health care reform legislation later this week, several blogs are reporting that Republicans on the Committee are pushing legislation that would require insurers operating within the new Exchange to to deny coverage for abortion services. From Raising Women’s Voices:

The Senate Finance Committee has been writing a health care reform bill and struggling to create legislation that will have bipartisan support. Chairman Max Baucus (pictured left) considered several compromises to win Republican support, so they can claim it is bipartisan legislation. One of these potential compromises comes in the form of an abortion exclusion, which would prevent abortion services from being covered by some or all insurance plans in the Health Insurance Exchange. We fear that members of the Senate Finance Committee are considering such a compromise.

Should it pass, the Senate Finance version would be the only bill that specifically prohibits a medical service. As the Wonk Room points out, “if denying abortion services to women is the price of bipartisanship, then perhaps winning those one or two Republican votes isn’t worth the price of jeopardizing women’s health and well-being.”

There is a 20 seat majority in the Senate. Why are/would any GNOP voices be incorporated into any piece of legislation?

I suspect this is a scheme to get Dems to vote “no” on healthcare reform, and I hope they’re not too stupid to see it!

Herein lies the real danger in government-run single-payer health care.

When Republicans are in charge (and they will, someday), women’s repoductive healthcare will be eliminated. No birth control, no abortions, no choice – by fiat.

  5. Chris LeJeune says:

This is not acceptable, and there is no excuse for this. The democrats have a filibuster proof majority in the senate. There is no reason to compromise with the republican side at all. I don’t care if every single senate republican pushes for this, there is still no excuse to put such an amendment in the bill. If we don’t have the votes to overcome a filibuster fine – make them stay up all night filibustering the bill. Then ram it through with reconciliation on a 51 majority vote. If the dems cave on this, then what good is it to have a dem majority?

Piss on “bipartisanship” with these right-wing Republican morons and bullies. They certainly couldn’t even be bothered to give us Dems the time of day when they were in absolute power during the rule of the Bush gangster regime. Ignore ‘em now.

Abortion is the termination of pregnancy. Abortion is not “murder,” it is the termination of pregnancy. Abortion is just another form of birth control. Without birth control, our cities, towns, counties, and states would be even more overcrowded with people, people and more people. Humans need to stop reproducing by from 90% to 99% to give the planet a rest and give it some time to recover from the abuse of human over-population.

Do you want the federal government to get between a woman and her doctor? Republicans do. These self-appointed right-wing busybodies are not “pro-life.” They are anti-woman and anti-sex. They want to punish women for having sex that results in a conception by forcing them to carry the pregnancy to term and thus produce another unwanted child.

As Noam Chomsky and others have noted, our politicians are far, far to the right of the citizens on most major issues, as are the corporate media. This is what’s driving us nuts these days.

As far as I can see, only Democratic politicians believe in this bipartisanship thing. Anyone reasonably conversant with today’s Republicans knows they just don’t do bipartisan. They don’t know that tune.

    You cannot access that file.

In all the world, there’s just one group of people–elected Democrats–who keep bringing up this ugly topic.

Haven’t they noticed the Repubs show no appetite for joining the party they are trying so desperately to throw?

Meanwhile, wingers in general are stocking up on ammo, talking about secession, going into “Obama’s birth certificate” fugues, and praying for another big terror attack. Not exactly the stuff of bipartisanship.

I doubt that very many lefties outside of Congress or the White House want bipartisanship, either. Curmudgeon that I am, I regard bipartisanship as treason. It really does seem to be the confection of desperate Democrats. What they’re so desperate about is the real mystery.

Well they are trying to over turn Roe v. Wade… This is a piss poor excuse to end something that is totally legal! My baby days are over, but there are many women out there that cannot take birth control or have enough money to feed their children when they are born. Will these stupid neocons pay for food for these babies when they are born? NO they would not. I am hoping that the Democrats are not that guillable to go along with that, and in this economy how the hell is a woman going to end an unwanted Pregnancy, if these women cannot afford an abortion, how the hell can they afford a child to feed, cloth, doctors, dentist, until they are 18 years old.

  53. Xanaphia says:

I just sent this to Feinstein and Boxer, but they are both strong supporters on Pro-choice issues, so I Don’t know how much I helped.
I urge you to vote against the Republican amendment to the health care reform bill that would deny coverage for abortion services. Just like the stimulus bill, funds for woman’s reproductive services were cut to gain Republican support for the bill, and in the end only 3 Republicans supported the bill, This will not result in Republican support for the bill, but will further hurt women. Republicans have no new ideas and seek only to obstruct everything President Obama and the Democrats do. The American people voted for change, change from misogynistic Republican rule, and the American people are counting on our Senators to do that. As a woman, I hope that you understand how important access to abortion is for woman’s health. I hope that you do the right thing.

  54. pags2 says:

–Well you seem to have a colorful way of describing something but I am not sure what. It can’t be those very rare late term abortions since that isn’t how that works so I am usnsure what procedure you mean. Doesn’t really matter as no what you describe whatever it is isn’t killing by virtue ofthe laws of the land. Is scratching living cells off one’s ass killing?

President Obama, needs to be aware of what the hell is in these bills that is put forth on his desk. Abortion is a personal choice and not the American Government choice, you see bumber stickers, sayin keep your roseries out of my ovaries.

I can not have anymore children, but if I would have been pregnant after my daughter was born, I would have had an abortion. We did not have that much money and I would not be able to raise a third child. Some people should think about that instead of thinking abortion as birth control. This is common sense.

  80. chomot says:

If this is what it takes to Git R dun…. Then do it. We can always fix it later with another nugget of legislation.

  81. pags2 says:

Obama is aware of what is in the bills. There are compromises on legislation that are necessary to get the bill passed. However, in this case, the Republicans have drawn the line at a public option which appears to be a fait accompli. It makes no sense for the Dems to water down the bill to suit the Republicans who are going to vote against it anyway. The Dems need to work out the bill among themselves and ram it through just like the Republicans did with legislation. It would be easier for the two Senators who want the abortion provision in to withdraw their objection and let the bill go. They can easily tell their constituents that the bill is what is needed even without the provision. It is annoying that these Senators are insisting that a bill be tailored to their specific conditions in order to receive the votes.

The “Democrats” know they don’t need any support from the Republicans and could pass single-payer, not-for-profit healthcare tomorrow if they wanted to. They could also pass that Don’t Ask Don’t Tell legislation that Obama claims he is waiting for.

They really want to help, but those bribes are just too sweet.

Abortion is just another form of birth control.

No, no, no, get with the program! Abortion is never used as birth control.

Scraping a baby out of its mother’s womb isn’t killing?
–Well you seem to have a colorful way of describing something but I am not sure what. It can’t be those very rare late term abortions since that isn’t how that works so I am usnsure what procedure you mean. Doesn’t really matter as no what you describe whatever it is isn’t killing by virtue ofthe laws of the land. Is scratching living cells off one’s ass killing?

Db, not you too? Please remember, while a fetus has no more worth than a tumor or those cells you are scratching off your butt, abortion is never
undertaken lightly. It is a very difficult decision that is made only after much thought and consideration despite the worthlessness of the fetus. ;)

Still having trouble following comments, eh bud? ;)

I would think that those here with an “alternative lifestyle” would be opposed to abortion. How else are they supposed to start a family. If it wasn’t for adoption all they would have is a chihuauas to raise as their kids.

rhf, (”Mizz J, rhf has always been a nutcase. He’s just always been on our side, so he was tolerable. Now he’s a Clinton ass sucker, and he can’t contain himself against the “hopium” smokers. What an idiot,”) you are still trying to understand the Bible? Good for you, bud. Your persistence is to be commended. ;)

  87. lvdragonlady says:

IF there is to be no abortions in the health plan then there should be NO E.D. drugs of ANY kind for men, simple as that.
NOW, let the GOP back that!!!!!
