Huckabee: Obama Needs To Stop Blaming Bush Because Bush Didn’t Complain About Inheriting Clinton’s Economy

On Fox and Friends this morning, host Gretchen Carlson asked former Arkansas governor Mike Huckabee (R) about Vice President Biden’s comment that the Obama administration “misread the economy” when they made predictions about the impact of the stimulus earlier this year. “Here goes Biden again and he says something that is really in this case true,” said Huckabee. “They didn’t realize how bad things were.”

Huckabee claimed that “there’s one thing though that Biden and President Obama have got to get under control. And that is quit blaming George Bush.” He then made the common conservative claim that Bush inherited a recession from Bill Clinton, but didn’t complain about it:

HUCKABEE: There’s one thing though that Biden and President Obama have got to get under control. And that is quit blaming George Bush. George Bush inherited an economy when he became president back in 2001 that was already beginning to show real signs of the stress from the breaking of the technology bubble. George Bush didn’t go out whining and complaining every day, he stood up like the president of the United States and he worked on trying to get it fixed.

Then 2001, 9/11 came, things really went tough, but he worked on the economy and it was in much better shape for most of his presidency. Then the recession started, wasn’t totally his fault for sure and all you hear from Joe Biden and President Obama is how, how terrible it was, what they inherited, how it wasn’t their fault. No, look, you own it now. You got elected, you wanted the job. Stand up and take it and get this thing rolling. But quit spending money.

Watch it:

As ThinkProgress has pointed out, it’s false to say that Bush and his colleagues refrained from “whining and complaining” about the economy they inherited. In fact, Bush complained about it right up until he left office:

When I took office, our economy was beginning a recession.” — Bush, 8/7/02

The president inherited a Clinton recession and turned it into the early stages of Bush prosperity.” — Secretary of Commerce Don Evans, 9/2/04

“In terms of the economy, look, I inherited a recession, I am ending on a recession.” — Bush, 1/12/09

As Media Matters noted in their comprehensive report on the backdating of the 2001 recession, which actually began in March 2001 according to the National Bureau of Economic Research, Bush OMB Director Mitch Daniels once used the inherited a recession talking point in three separate interviews on the same day.

Transcript:

Update Media Matters has an expanded list of Bush administration complaints about the economy it "inherited."

Clinton also handed Bush the biggest surplus in U.S. history. A simple thank-you would suffice.

    Meanwhile, in progressive news:

Healthcare advocates tell Obama to get bent!

Despite Obama’s Demand, Outside Groups Will Keep Pounding Dem Senators

President Obama may have issued a private demand that groups allied with the White House stop hammering moderate Democratic Senators with health care ads, but those groups have no intention to listen to him.

In fact, not only do the groups plan to continue their ads, spokespeople for the groups tell me, but one is actually increasing its buy.

Over the weekend, the Washington Post reported that Obama had privately told Congressional Dems he’s concerned about TV and online campaigns hitting moderate Democrats for not getting fully behind the public health care option. “We shouldn’t be focusing resources on each other,” Obama reportedly said.

The response from the groups: That’s nice, but we ain’t stopping.

A spokesperson for the Progressive Change Campaign Committee, one of the groups Obama reportedly complained about, confirms to me that the group is upping its buy with a new round of ads attacking moderate Dem Senators like Ben Nelson and Mary Landrieu this coming week. “If congressional staffers are complaining to the White House, that shows they are nervous and what we’re doing is working,” PCCC’s Stephanie Taylor says. “So we should just keep doing what we’re doing.”

It’s the progressive thing to do. These are the people to send $$ to.

  5. Uncle Ho says:

Bush inherited a huge budget surplus from Clinton, then immediately turned it into deficits that our great-great-grandchildren will still be paying for. Not to mention that almost immediately, Bush started the recession in March, 2001.

Hard to match/beat a record like that. But then, Bush ran EVERY business venture he had into the ground.

unfortunately for the nation “Bush prosperity” is just another euphemism for “recession”.

  9. Divided We Fall says:

Huckabee needs to shut the hell up! The God of the republican party, Ronald Reagan blamed Jimmy Carter every single day he was in office.

President Obama has the right to blame Bush for the mess he inherited. Didn’t the republicans blame Clinton for 9/11 and still do?

It took eight years to get our country in the mess we are in and yet when things aren’t happening fast enough for the republicans approval they get mad when President Obama puts the blame on Bush.

What is the problem with accountability, reality and responsibility with the republican party? They will use this strategy until things get better, but damn it all if things are fixed in six months, it’s all Obama’s fault. Screw the republicans and their corporate masters.

Gee- Obama doesn’t get to give away trillions of $$$ to his millionaire and billionaire friends and create an economic and fiscal bubble the size of Texas where alot of the money ended up. Huckabee is right about the stop complaining part: Obama should get off the pause button and start prosecuting to the fullest extent of the law those who perpatrated this disaster on the country and call them what they are. They are traitors and murderers whose loyalty is to multi-national corporations and not America.

    OMG.

Not only did “President” Bush cite being “handed a recession” frequently his first year (or two), but CANDIDATE Bush campaigned on the theme “the economy isn’t really as good as they say” SO FREQUENTLY that it resulted in what many cited as Bush and Cheney “talked the country into a Recession”.

Geez Louise… Clinton had almost a trillion dollar surplus; he also forcasted at the end of his Presidency and had a projection of 1.5 trillion dollars, by 2010. SOOOOOOO, Huckabee where was that recession, Mmmmm….? I actually do not think that we are in a recession, but a mild depression. Look at the the people who is on and signing up for Unemployment. Go and see the Great Depression and see how many people were out of work…

I remember after 911, I worked at Toys R US and as a full timer, we had to go part time with full time benefits… That was the start of his recession… I went from 37 1/2 hours to about 15 hours a week. I collected a partial unemployment, but that is not the point. It was so fun to just stand around and have maybe one to three customers a day… Boring! I also had an X-Box taken from my hand during inventory, this was in 2002, they caught that person, who was going to sell the video system for drugs. I had to ID him, that was scary. I had to go to Court, but he pleaded out, but not before he dried out.

This is nothing but a diversion from our recent problem…

Let’s make a deal, Mikey. We’ll give President Obama the time needed to work out of this huge hole that GDumbya dug for us before you start pissing and moaning about how unfair it is to blame GDumbya for the recession.

Then, when we are on the other side of this republican-caused crisis, we will still blame it on GDumbya. After all, it’s the truth. I know that republicans are allergic to the truth but fair is fair.

  29. Divided We Fall says:

Bush’s excuse for blowing the Clinton surplus and spending money like a drunken sailor on 9/11, the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan and the republicans didn’t care.

President Obama inherits the presidency while our country is stuck in two costly wars, he is stuck with record national debt, record foreign debt, record trade deficits, our economy is in shambles, the financial/banking sector and the housing market are on the brink of collapse, jobs were lost at record pace and now the republicans are mad?

Sure the democrats deserve some of the blame for the mess we are in BUT Bush and the republicans had total control of our government for 6 of the 8 years Bush was president so who should we blame? Hey I know lets blame it all on gay marriage, abortionists and the liberal media. That ought to make the republicans happier.

  30. Hoodathunktick says:

Hey, Huck? Is it easy to talk smart from the cheap seats? Or did you figure since the rest of your Republican buddies are going down in various flames you want to keep your hat in the ring?

As for Fox news, they serve a purpose for the puppet masters. They continue to distract their ignorant viewers from the truth, dumb them down ever more, keep the hateful right wing rhetoric fueled.

It all serves it’s purpose, to divide our country, to keep us fighting amongst ourselves while the wealthy and the powerful who run our country continue to rape all of us. Could you imagine what would happen if 300 million Americans united and stood up to our government and their corporate overlords?

  43. Oval12345678 aka James K. Sayre says:

Actually, Bush was bad-mouthing the American economy back in the summer of 2000. I remember well that he made several complaining comments about the economy going south. Some critics of Bush pointed out that he in effect, was cheerleading for a recession. Eight years later, Limbaugh and many in the GOP are again cheerleading for Bush economic depression. It would seem that Republican perfidy and treachery are constants in American politics.

  44. pags2 says:

Huckabee is no different than the rest of the right wing. He drapes himself in the flag and thumps the Bible because these theatrics work for a lot of people. In reality, he does what other right wing politicians do; they cast urban America as being unpatriotic and anti-religious. Then he complains about the liberal bias of the media as the culprit when his poll numbers are bad.

Bush, Republicans, and all trolls in general blamed Clinton for everything. That’s why we taunted YOU and your kind with “Clinton did it, too!” for so long.

President Obama (doesn’t it just burn when you read that?) resigned his Senate seat after he was elected as President.

There are several Republicans currently serving who should resign — we’d think more highly of their character and integrity if they did. But Republicans like Sarah Palin only quit when it will get them more money, or serves their own purposes, or literally quit a job they figuratively quit months ago.

    Keep trying!

Obama resigned because he aspired to a higher post. I do hate to say it, but so did Palin.

What post is he going to accept higher than the Presidency?

    The President will not quit.

  50. ElBruce says:

1.5. Bush’s apologists have spent the entirety of his Presidency blaming everything that went wrong on Clinton.

    2. Clinton left the U.S. with a government surplus. Bush left it with massive debt in addition to poor economic performance.

    3. The post-Clinton economy didn’t actually tank until the day after the SCOTUS elected Bush. The Bush economy did the full swan dive in early September, before the election of the next President had even been determined.

    4. Bush’s response to the bursting of the tech bubble was to go clear brush. Almost 2/3 of his time in office up until 9/11 had been spent in Crawford. Obama’s response to it has been to get more legislative and executive work done than any President in their first few months in office.

    5. Obama had been saying we were facing an impending financial crisis in back in Spring ‘08, while Bush was still refusing to admit there was even a recession. As such, he’s only being consistent in pointing out what he predicted is exactly what happened.

Oh, and let’s not forget Clinton had to clean up Poppy Bush’s debt that he left from his one term President. How quickly we forget. It took one Clinton (Bill) to clean up a year year mess left by the first Bush and now we have another Clinton (Sec. of State Hillary Clinton) to clean up after 8 years of the second Bush’s mess. Get out of denial, Rev. Huck. Obama inherited Bush’s financial mess.

Bush was also out on the campaign trail in 2000 talking down the economy with his constant “dashboard lights” speech. Also, the recession ended in September 2001 meaning the 9/11 attack had little impact on the economy outside of travel, especially air travel. Lastly, if i’m not mistaken, more Americans were in the workforce when Bush came into office than when he left office. That would be the worst record since Herbert Hoover. Huckabee better go back and check out the government statistics and issue a correction because what he said doesn’t hold water.

Did it ever occur to you that when they’re done powdering your shiny slimy forehead and making you look like you’re among the living on the set of a FOX noise TV stage and you see yourself on the TV machine there?…don’t you know they are making a COPY of that? Yeah! It’s frickin amazing! It’s called VIDEO TAPE and we can PLAY BACK what you and other GOP ignoramuses actually said! Any time we want.

I’m just sayin’you moronic sanctimonious lying sack of hateful crap.

  64. Fontsdeleon says:

There needs to be an another sect of Christianity for these t.v. right-wingers like Huckabee. A sect of Christianity where greed is a virtue and America is the new Jerusalem. CEOs are saints and the amount of wealth you have determines your level of spirituality.(Warren Buffet would be considered a spiritual giant). Poor Joe Blow down the block is a pathetic Christian because he works for $6.50 an hour.

  65. pags2 says:

For Huckabee and many other evangelical ministers, religion is big business. They are parasites on society because they suck up everything in society while giving back nothing. These evangelicals ignore all of the scandals with their ministers. They continue to buy into guns, God and gays agenda when the true enemy of their faith are the ministers. If you look at any of the televangelists, you will note that they are their families are dressed in expensive clothing and I don’t mean Sears. They drive big expensive cars and have large homes. These evangelicals are not smart enough to figure out they are being fleeced so they deserve the people like Huckabee.

  66. Laszlo Panaflex says:

The current recession began in December 2007, over a year before Obama took over. The stock market lost 40% of its value last summer. Obama inherited an economy that had been failing for over a year and was in full out free fall by January. Less than six months in, he’s supposed to have fixed it all. Did they really think he was magic?

  68. Jackie says:

Look if Bush said Clinton left him a recession is must be true because Bush wouldn’t lie. Most Americans believe what the Media says and only those who remember the jobs, college for their kids, saving accounts and vacations know this is Bull. But it could work as Bush said Saddam had WMD’s while a memo dated before the invasion showed he didn’t and the White House knew about it but kept lying.

  69. stroupca says:

Heres what the left doesn’t understand…and I’m a lefty. Media Matters doesn’t matter. The right wing pundits know full well they can make any allegation, any allegation and get away with it. Their base does not critically think and WILL NOT go to, or, trust any website/person/paper that has been deemed “liberal” by them. They, and us, will not remember random quotes, so they have gotten away with another “drive by allegation” that’s patently false, while every righty listening is screaming “Damn right” at the TV.
We are doomed…Harry Reid is the pathetic plastic butter knife at a gunfight. Obama will be a great success at foreign policy, he can mend fences and create alliances like no other, and doesn’t need the democratic congress to help him. He will be a domestic policy failure because he does need the congress…we will get a health care bill so loaded down with “poisen pill” amendments that it will fail and Obama will be blamed when in reality it will bare no resemblace to what Obama would have wanted. He needs bust some noses…that won’t happen

  70. darter22 says:

Huckster, your nose is getting longer.

  71. lvdragonlady says:

    LIAR LIAR LIAR
There was a surplus when bush took office. When he left we were so far under the bus it was not even funny and the deficit did NOT include the wars being fought because bush borrowed money to wage these wars instead of having them put in the budget.

  72. DaTruth says:

When Bush took office he was very unpopular no one wanted him to be President. He needed something to turn his presidency around. Another Pearl Harbor. 9/11. Planned and carried out by the Bush-BinLaden partnership. A second wave of planned terrorism involving the economy took place during the last months of the worst presidency ever. Obama took over an economy deliberately terrorized by Bush and his cronies.
