Anti-LGBT lawmakers raising cash off of an Elton John concert.

eltonjohn Reps. John Shimkus (R-IL) and Jean Schmidt (R-OH) are long-time foes of gay rights, scoring 0 from the Human Rights Campaign in the 110th Congress. However, both will be holding fundraisers at the upcoming July 11 Billy Joel/Elton John concert in Washington, DC. Elton John, as the Sunlight Foundation notes, “has been a vocal advocate for HIV/AIDS prevention and for global gay rights (see his foundation here, and attempts to raise public awareness here).” Shimkus and Schmidt, in contrast, support a constitutional amendment to ban marriage equality. In 2005, Shimkus also hosted another Elton John fundraiser.

Using the concert to spur funds is basically no different than dKos or other ‘liberal’ sites using the cash they gain from blogads advertising Coulter’s books and conservative causes and such.

It’s kinda the same logic they applied at the Cotton Club, which took advantage of top black performing acts, but didn’t allow blacks in the audience.

Spencer’s Mom: One of the most haunting Bernie Taupin/Elton John tunes is Ticking (if memory serves me correctly, it’s from the Caribou album – must check). I just adored their music until the release of Blue Moves. From that point on, I lost interest as his music changed and it didn’t touch me, but I had already moved on to the Grateful Dead…

    Anyhow, Ticking lyrics:

    Music by Elton John
    Lyrics by Bernie Taupin

“An extremely quiet child” they called you in your school report
“He’s always taken interest in the subjects that he’s taught”
So what was it that brought the squad car screaming up your drive
To notify your parents of the manner in which you died

At St. Patricks every Sunday, Father Fletcher heard your sins
“Oh, he’s unconcerned with competition he never cares to win”
But blood stained a young hand that never held a gun
And his parents never thought of him as their troubled son

“Now you’ll never get to Heaven” Mama said
    Remember Mama said
    Ticking, ticking
“Grow up straight and true blue
    Run along to bed”
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

They had you holed up in a downtown bar screaming for a priest
Some gook said “His brain’s just snapped” then someone called the police
You’d knifed a Negro waiter who had tried to calm you down
Oh you’d pulled a gun and told them all to lay still on the ground

Promising to hurt no one, providing they were still
A young man tried to make a break, with tear-filled eyes you killed
That gun butt felt so smooth and warm cradled in your palm
Oh your childhood cried out in your head “they mean to do you harm”

“Don’t ever ride on the devil’s knee” Mama said
    Remember mama said
    Ticking, ticking
“Pay your penance well, my child
    Fear where angels tread”
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

Within an hour the news had reached the media machine
A male caucasian with a gun had gone berserk in Queens
The area had been sealed off, the kids sent home from school
Fourteen people lying dead in a bar they called the Kicking Mule

Oh they pleaded to your sanity for the sake of those inside
“Throw out your gun, walk out slow just keep your hands held high”
But they pumped you full of rifle shells as you stepped out the door
Oh you danced in death like a marionette on the vengeance of the law

“You’ve slept too long in silence” Mama said
    Remember Mama said
    Ticking, ticking
“Crazy boy, you’ll only wind up with strange notions in your head”
Hear it, hear it, ticking, ticking

The people who come to their fundraisers will feel very uncomfortable if the issue is broached which it should. Their discomfort is a lot less noxious than deprivation of equal rights.

So true. I remember growing up Elton ruled. There were rumors back then about him being gay, but all anyone ever said about it back then was we didn’t care if he was gay. His music still ruled.

Will Jean Schmidt be raising funds in her Olympic gymnast outfit?

Why is she still in office? Is there no one else in her district constitutionally qualified to run for US Representative? Or not interested enough? The bar doesn’t seem to have been set too high in her district. Or has Diebold been helping her, the way they promised to deliver Ohio to Bush in 2004?

  38. Bobwurst says:

She’s from the crazy part of Ohio, which is saying something…

  39. Wayne A. Schneider says:

    katy,

I do not know what the format of this fund-raising event is, but apparently anyone can sign up for a booth, or a room, or something, and collect money for their favorite cause.

In my mind, this is not quite the same as dKos collecting ad revenues from people they oppose ideologically. In that case, it’s dKos’s site and they are collecting money from their opponents who are trying to use dKos. In Elton’s case, it’s his concert and his political opponents are collecting money off of it; Elton isn’t collecting from his opponent’s efforts. Shimkus and Schmidt are the ones getting the money, not Elton.

I’m guessing that they will do anything for money. The idea Elton John is gay and the people who go to see him might not like them probably never crossed their minds. Billy Joel and Elton John both are top 40 musicians (I’m not attacking anyone’s tastes here, just saying that these two are not dirty hippie types). Good news – for some, anyway.

Focus on the Family reports that a na rth study demonstrates that some homosexuals can successfully receive reorientation therapy.

    http://www. citizen link .org/CLtopstories/A000010419.cfm

New Study: Sexual Orientation Can Be Changed

    by Gary Schneeberger, CitizenLink editor

Peer-reviewed scientific survey looks at more than a century of research to determine that those with unwanted same-sex attractions can benefit from therapy and should continue to have access to it.

A new report in this month’s issue of the peer-reviewed Journal of Human Sexuality finds that sexual orientation can be changed — and that psychological care for individuals with unwanted same-sex attractions is generally beneficial and that research has not found significant risk of harm.

The study, conducted by the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality (NARTH), examined more than 100 years of professional and scientific literature from 600-plus studies and reports from clinicians, researchers and former clients principally published in professional and peer-reviewed journals.
    .
    .
    .
Among the scientific findings cited in the study:

    • Despite knowing the AIDS risk, homosexuals repeatedly and pathologically continue to indulge in unsafe sex practices.

    • Homosexuals represent the highest number of STD cases.

    • Many homosexual sex practices are medically dangerous, with or without “protection.”

    • More than one-third of homosexual men and women are substance abusers.

    • Forty percent of homosexual adolescents report suicidal histories.

    • Homosexuals are more likely than heterosexuals to have mental-health concerns, such as eating disorders, personality disorders, paranoia, depression and anxiety.

    • Homosexual relationships are more violent than heterosexual relationships.

    • Societal bias and discrimination do not, in and of themselves, contribute to the majority of increased health risks for homosexuals.

Jeff Johnston, gender issue analyst for Focus on the Family, said these findings should have an impact on “those who claim to have the best interests of the gay community at heart.”

“True social justice, compassion, concern and intellectual honesty,” he explained, “dictate that men and women who want to pursue freedom from homosexuality – whether because of their faith or because of the health risks associated with homosexuality – should be afforded that opportunity by the mental health industry, including its associations and educational institutions.”

Well, the truth comes out. The “Journal for Human Sexuality” is NOT a peer-reviewed publication at ll! It’s only NARTH responses to a peer-reviewed publication by the APA that states that gay-conversion therapy does indeed cause mental, emotional, ans spiritual harm to the individual.

In fact, the title of this “Journal” is “NARTH’s Response to the APA Claims on Homosexuality.” See for yourself:

Seems that NARTH doesn’t allow facts to rebut their claims, therefore they cannot claim to be “peer-reciewed”.

This is the pertinent phrase of your comment. The experts that NARTH cite ignore the data that disagrees with their pre-determined conclusions. That is not “science”, by any stretch.

Even you have to admit that truth.

bit doesn’t know that they “ignore” the data that disagrees with their view, and what you’re saying could be equally true of the APA or of NARTH.

Even hard science is affected by the “consensus” view. If you know the history of APA removing homosexuality from their diagnostic manual of mental disorderes – as many conservative sites know it, you would know that it wasn’t science that got the homosexuality removed, but APA politicis.

OTOH, NARTH is straight forward about their intention:

NARTH upholds the rights of individuals with unwanted homosexual attraction to receive effective psychological care, and the right of professionals to offer that care.

I’ve heard the complaint from con sites about how 20% of the official members voted to remove homosexuality as a mental disorder, but they seem to gloss over the fact that the voting percentage is the same for all other votes to include or remove disorders. Makes one wonder why they pick and choose their votes about which they complain.

“NARTH upholds the rights of individuals with unwanted homosexual attraction to receive effective psychological care, and the right of professionals to offer that care.”

NARTH, again, glosses over the testimonials of the ex-ex-gay crowds, and refuses to acknowledge the percentage of people who’ve “failed” their therapy. It’s not like NARTH is AA, they are very proud of the few people who’ve “converted”, but only for as long as these people remain “converted”. They seem to pass blame for their failure onto the people, and not onto their therapy.

From the first time bit read about NARTH, he thought it had a sort of “…the one who has the most belief succeeds …” tone about it, but what would one expect?

But, nonetheless, please make a point.
Are you trying to say they shouldn’t be touting reorientation therapy?
Are you trying to say their therapy is not 100% effective after 5 years?
Are you trying to say they shouldn’t promote reorientation therapy until it’s 100% effective?
Are you trying to say they should offer a money back guarantee?

On TP the only poster who associates numbers with homosexuality is bit. So when you say there’s an ex-ex-gay crowd, how large a group of people are you talking about?

Percentage of homosexuals in the general population: 2.8%.
Percentage of homosexuals interested in marriage ( based on MASS experience when the license was available to only residents)? 2.0% – that’s 0.1% of the general population – is interested in so called same-same gender marriage.

Percentage of homosexuals with unwanted same-same sex attraction? ????%

    Percentage attempting reorientation therapy? ????%
    Percentage successful ????%

DS, need some numbers. All you seem to be ?saying is that it doesn’t work for everyone. Ok?
