Jacksonville Tea Party Protest Features Signs Comparing President Obama To Hitler

During July 4th celebrations last weekend, anti-Obama protesters again assembled for tea parties across the country. The Washington Independent has noted that the tea party movement has lost steam since April, and that the protests last weekend were sporadic. In Jacksonville, FL, attendance was estimated to be 4,500 people for the April protest, but last week drew only 1,000.

The Duval County Republican Party, one of the organizers of the Jacksonville protest, has been engulfed in controversy because of numerous posters featured at the rally depicting President Obama as Adolf Hitler:

The Duval County Republican Party posted the pictures on the Party Facebook page. Racist and offensive posters have become a norm for tea parties, with signs comparing Obama to Osama Bin Laden distributed at the very first rallies.

Though the Duval County GOP has tried to disassociate itself from the protest, a new ad campaign, paid for by other tea party organizers, compares Obama to Hitler.

go figure, the only place the teaparty “movement” is even somewhat relevent is in the south

  2. chiroptera toasterhead says:

It’s amazing how these people continue to use the “Obama=Socialist” meme, even though the administration’s poliies are moving farther and farther away from any semblance of socialism. But why let facts get in the way of a good hate slogan, right?

  3. Daddy-O says:

Teabaggers? Comparing Obama to Hitler? So nu?

    No one could have predicted…

It’s Facialism, people! Close your eyes and TAKE it!

Bush was more like Hitler than Obama could ever aspire to.

They’ve got the right idea, just subtract one from the President Number…

  8. pags2 says:

The Duval Republicans are trying to have it both ways. They organized the protests and now they want to disclaim their involvement because of the posters. As usual, Republicans think they can avoid criticism for what transpired. I would imagine that some of the local papers will be condemning the protesters and by extension, the local Republican party.

  10. majii says:

The problem with these teabaggers is that they are making signs about things they don’t even know about, except via Fuchs Noose, Limbaugh and the other far right-wing commentators/politicians. If they were asked to define terms like socialism, communism, der Fuhrer, fiscal conservatism, and terrorist and to provide examples of these terms, they wouldn’t have a clue. These folks have sold their futures and those of their relatives and children in exchange for talking points, having absolutely no idea that what the president is trying to achieve will improve their lives in the long-run. This is the ultimate example of stupidity for public consumption because who in their right mind would help people at the top of the food chain get richer while they themselves get poorer?

  11. Frugalchariot says:

If Obama is indeed the equivalent of Hitler, he’d probably see to the rounding up of conservative Republicans and send them to concentration camps.

Hmmm. I need to think on that one. Hmmm.

  12. Purple State says:

You know, it was great to spend a weekend without having a television around. No Fox News, no coverage of the tea parties…

…wait, did ANYONE cover the tea parties Saturday?

  13. Mike Hunt says:

Help. I need some help with recent American political history.

If I am not mistaken just after Bush illegally invaded and occupied Iraqnam, wasn’t it the Repignofascist Party that claimed anyone disagreeing with the President was unpatriotic?

Do I remember that correctly? If so, then why isn’t the Duval County Repignofascist Party and the Repignofascist National Committee coming out and strongly denouncing this sort of unpatriotic horse hockey?

I don’t think they even happened. I can’t find all that many pictures of the “Independence Day Tea Party” on photobucket. I’ve tried variations… There is hardly anything.

This is why don’t insert BS politics into the 4th of July.

Funny but it would seem that when obama makes signing statements , proposes an executive order to incarcerate people preemptively without charges , plans to put an additional 20 000 troops on the ground in America , appoints the very people who created the financial crisis in charge of solving it while rewarding billions of borrowed dollars to these same corporations ,expands bushes legal rationale in the courts , continues rendition ect . he gets a free pass .

Over the 4th of July weekend…a car pulls up behind me and the guys inside responded to my Obama bumper sticker by calling me hostile names and an “N” Lover. At an event at the beach, while minding my own business I was called a communist lover, just by mentioning Obama’s name. This behavior is pathetic, and I’m sick of these uneducated idiots.

  23. Purple State says:

    deebaser Says:

This is why don’t insert BS politics into the 4th of July.

No doubt that the organizers completely fudged up the idea of the tea parties.

    1. No real advertisement from Fox News. A few mentions, but it was obvious that the news channel wanted to celebrate what America was and not what it would be, according to their observations.

    2. No real Republican presense. Let’s face it–would politicians want to attend a rally on July 4th or celebrate with hot dogs and hamburgers? Besides, with Sanford and Palin, two of the GOP’s biggest all-stars in April, dealing with their own agendas, there’s no one to help them.

I also have a feeling that the GOP is troubled by the independent voters showing at these functions. These were more of an anti-government rally in the first place, so what would that make the politicians that went to support the rallies on the Fourth of July?

The tea-party movement has returned to its grass-roots movement, as it should have been in the first place. In all likelihood, it will remain this way for a while, unless big conservative media jumps on the wagon again.

And after you’ve finished that task, I’m sure we can find other examples of your boy bush’s fascism… or, you can continue to be a troll…

There is many more people who was fired and could not perform in Alantic City. There is your Freedom, we lost everything, well does anyone know exactly when the Patriot Act is up for renewal? SEN. RUSS FEINGOLD: Well, I’m disappointed in this part.
this is an area of great disappointment, surprising, that the President is using the state secrets privilege in a way that reminds us exactly of the Bush administration. Now, his excuse the other night was that, well, these cases were pending, and they hadn’t had time to review it. So I’m expecting good things from the President in changing this policy.

I support protesters 100%, I even supported the original teabaggers, for it is their right to protest. Sadly what may have been a good idea was quickly swept up by corporate interests and infiltrated with racist scum and ultra right wing wackos.

The message should be, no matter which party is in charge of our government, we still pay to much in taxes while the wealthy have many tax loopholes and offshore tax havens to use to save their millions.

We should all be out in the streets protesting the tight grip the banks, Wall Street, corporations and the defense industry have on our government.

We should all be out in the streets protesting the lack of representation we get from our politicians.

We should be all out protesting the FACT that most of our politicians are in office to protect the interests of the wealthy and the corporations.

  52. misscoleopteramolly says:

We get that there are people out there who really, really hate it that Barack Obama was elected President, and will stop at nothing to bash him and trash him no matter what he does.

But when they’re reduced to comparing him to Hitler, that’s just pathetic. Is this really all they have?

I recommend these protesters find something specific President Obama has actually done (or proposed) and address that. But instead, they use vague comparisons to Hitler and other historical bad guys without basis, just to inflame (or try to). Or they protest things they THINK he might do (such as raise everybody’s taxes into the stratosphere). Or they try to attach labels to him that appeal to their base (”most liberal president ever”, etc.). Perhaps if they got a clue and make a compelling argument with their protests, they might actually sway some people not already in their choir.

Well, since he called his party National Socialists, that makes it so. Much like China and Iran are actual republics.

Nice try. You can call yourself whatever you want; it don’t make it so. Hitler was no more a socialist than Mussollini was — they were both fascists, favoring total governmental control of the people rather than control of the government by the people as in a democracy (or as in true Marxist/Leninist socialism, for that matter).

But I’ll play along with your logic — if Iran and China are “true republics”, then I guess that means that the US “Republican” party favors the theocratic system of Iran or the politburo/military-controlled system of China over the democratic system of the U.S., right?

I can’t believe I am going to say this…but, shut the heck up your are winning. It makes me sick. Because they are calling him a socialist we back off and let 45 million americans down?!?
Geez, we can win for losing. As I recall, WE WON!!!!
No more pussy-footing push that shite through!!
A lot of Americans that voted for Obama (including me and I worked as a volunteer for his campaign) did so because he was the one strongest on healthcare reform! Now, we are being thrown under the bus because it is pizzing off the republicans who have NO power so to speak on Capital HIll right now. I know I am rambling a bit. But this really honks me off.

    Posse comitatus .

Date: Dec 1, 2008. Bush was in office. I think this plan is bad, and I hope Obama reverses it. But it wasn’t his plan.

    So you are wrong.

    .

    freeman Says:

Preventative detention from greenwald and maddow .

Neither Greenwald nor Maddow have the power to detain anybody. Similar to the posse comitatus problem, I would like Obama to completely reverse Bush-era abuses, but I can see why it may be difficult to do so immediately

    Again, you are wrong.

    .

    freeman Says:

    Signing statements.

Signing statements have been part of passing a bill for a long time, way before Bush. When Bush did it though, instead of clarifying how he intended to uphold the law, he would insert language saying that he would only uphold the law if it didn’t conflict with other priorities. That’s what the problem is, not the existence of signing statements at all.

    You are wrong.

    .

    freeman Says:

    Now how about preemptive detention?

Obama has detained zero new people since taking office. He’s just got to deal with the ones left over from Bush’s folly.

    .

    freeman Says:

I’m just quoting russ feingold , rachel maddow and the Wapo . You can dispute these facts with them .

I can dispute them with you. You brought it up, you back it up or concede.

Basically all your examples boil down to is “Obama is doing maybe a tenth of what Bush did, so he’s Hitler.” If that’s so, then what is Bush, the Devil?

All of the critics you’re quoting are further to the left than Obama. So the solution to your criticism would be for Obama to become more liberal. Now maybe you’re a far-left liberal already and we’re just misreading the intent of your posts, but it seems to me that you’re more likely one of the wingnuts who will grab any criticism they can without actually thinking about where that goes. Because all wingnuts are congenitally, profoundly stupid.

    from greenwalds article
Anonymous trial balloon articles like this one are difficult to comment on because it’s obviously designed to announce that a certain policy is being considered before it’s actually written, and so none of the key details is known. Would Obama’s new detention powers apply only to current “War on Terror” prisoners at places like Guantanamo and Bagram, or would they also apply to future, not-yet-abducted detainees as well? Would these powers apply to detainees picked up anywhere in the world, far away from “war zones”? Would there be any judicial review or other meaningful oversight provisions so that — even in theory — this was something other than the unilateral, unchecked presidential power to detain indefinitely without charges? None of these important details is known (though the article notes that, under one White House proposal, “ongoing detention would be subject to annual presidential review”; the Emperor, sitting alone, will decree once a year whether they must remain in a cage).
    But you say don’t worry , he’s a democrat ?

Those boobs wouldn’t know NAtional soZIalismus (that is where the word NAZI comes from) if it bit them on the ass. They are the ones closest to being that if anyone is. Nationalism and not socialism was the strongest part of the Fascist movement. Socialism amounts to the state taking a lot of the money earned by the population and redistributing it back in a “fair” way in order to offer social services to the population such as health care, funding the military, financial help for young families and so on. Fascist Germany did in fact deliver on these thing early on..but as Hitler, Goebbels and Himmler got more ambitious they let the social services for the people fall to the side and used all resources to fund the improvement of the military. Similarly, the US has a history of a strong military, and spending much of the money collected from taxes on it. I don’t deny that this is an important thing, but go to Military Budget Wiki to see the budget. Amazing! 1 Trillion per year roughly. Go without any new toys for three years and man we would be looking great, wouldn’t we? The military claims over half of the entire budget. Now as a comparison, go to your local schools. Do they have what they need? Does your local, county and state police force have what they need to do their job efficiently? Are teachers, cops and firemen making enough money? Probably not. Where is that money? In defense spending…lots of it on shite that will never see the light of day and is superfluous anyway. Why? Because those guys way up at the top…like Bush and Cheney give governmental contracts to companies that they own an interest in. This is something that Bush learned from Grandpa Walker…he and Hitler were doing that way before anyone knew that it was possible. That is nationalism at work…..the big message “The people are there to serve the government” and not the other way around. These boobs in Jacksonville and the other podunk towns where the tea parties were held are obviously home to some undereducated redneck racist white-supremists who don’t like the idea of having a president who has an ethnicity other than Redneck. But don’t worry much folks. Between this handful of unemployed backwoods “Deliverance” extras and the “inner circle” of Republicans who all “secretly” agreed to try and refuse the stimulus money (Mark Sanford and Sarah Palin come to mind) for their states, you got the recipe for a failure of a mutiny. Let them keep taking orders from Napoleon Limbaugh (do you think he has other similarities with Napoleon?) Just ignore these idiots and eventually there will be so few of them that they might be ashamed to show themselves in public. Of course these same people will go get their “social” security checks or their unemployment benefits before they murder the next free clinic doctor for donating his time to a good cause, but that is an unfortunate statistic we will have to live with because this IS America after all and we take everyone in and give them a chance even those who don’t bother to read the Constitution or a history book before they make stupid accusations about their elected leader. And if you are asking yourself why they decided to liken Obama to Hitler…well, they were just waiting for any old chance to march around with Nazi symbols. I guess this just gave them the chance to dust that stuff off and march around with it again until the next Confederate Flag rally.

These partisan folks definitely need to stop the name calling. It’s easy enough to express your opposition to a position without name calling. Like Howard Dean said, “Even in the darkest days of the Bush/Cheney administration, I don’t think there was any reason to call George Bush a fascist.”

I wish Obama had made it a priority to completely reverse all of those Bush-era abuses. I’m dissapointed that he hasn’t. But for that matter, he isn’t moving fast enough for my tastes on a lot of issues. Then again, if you look at the shortened time span we’re dealing with here, he’s accomplished a hell of a lot; just not as much as we’re demanding.

Dismantling the naked power grab of the Bush era is going to take some time and some will. Both seem to be lacking at present.

However: relevant to the article at top, Obama is no fascist. Bush was one (fascism = unitary executive theory). Obama did not seize any of these powers, nor has he seized any more since assuming office. All that Obama has done is fail to relinquish Bush’s claimed powers as fast as the rest of us might like (and where were these wingnuts when Bush had them?) So he’s basically being blamed by the right wing just for inheriting powers that Bush claimed. Of course, if he did relinquish them all immediately, the “making us less safe” crowd would just rear their ugly head again.

I didn’t even look, because that would be like renouncing vetoes – it’s an inherent function of the Presidency. However, he hasn’t abused signing statements like Bush did in terms of attempting to write law from the Oval Office, and that’s all that I expect.

I’ll quit complaining about personal details since it seems to be a multiple-person side conversation at this point. I’ll just grumble a bit that maybe the daily ThinkFast thread would be more appropriate to use as a chatroom.

  179. bonncaruso says:

Well, there may be some real crazies in Duval County, Fl, but I did an intensive county-by-county statistical analysis of the results of the GE in FL and came up with some fascinating results.

You can read the analysis starting here.

Here the facts on Duval county:

Example 2 – Duval county (pop. Approximately 778,900, county seat: Jacksonville), which went for Bush by +16.16% in 2004, but for McCain by only +1.90% in 2008, was the third closest county-wide race for President in Florida in 2008 and the closest race in Duval county for President since 1964. Duval county has only gone for a democrat twice since 1952: in 1960 (Kennedy) and 1976 (Carter). Johnson, who swept the nation in 1964 with the largest national PV% of all time, was unable to win this county; Goldwater edged Johnson out 50.55%-49.45%, a +1.10% margin. Duval county went for Wallace in 1968; Nixon won the county in a blowout in 1972, with 72.23%. Clinton lost this county both times. This is a traditionally very, very republican county and until 2008, by landslide margins. The county has therefore become a „tipping-point county“ for 2012 and is an excellent example for many reasons.

First, it had the third highest partisan shift of the election in Florida, -14.26% for the GOP or +14.26% for the Democratic party, slightly less than double the state partisan shift of +7.82%.

Second, Obama picked-up 44,008 votes in Duval county over 2004, McCain lost 9,653 votes over 2004. He picked up more votes here than in the democratic pick-up Pinellas county. This means that Jacksonville (Duval County) is trending strongly democratic and like Tampa, will be one of the urban/suburban/rural areas to watch in 2012.

Third, the 25 counties in Florida that trended Republican in 2008,though they account for 23.70% of the total land area of the state of Florida accounted for 4.61% of the statewide popular vote. Duval county accounted for 4.95% of the statewide popular vote, so one can say that those GOP trending counties pretty much add up to the firepower of Jacksonville (Duval county), which is now trending strongly democratic. More on this in Part III.

Incidentally, Duval county is in the extreme NE part of the state, is a coastal county and very close to the state of Georgia. Bush won Georgia by +16.60% in 2004, almost identical to this county-wide margin from the same year, proof once again that state borders are a very artificial creation.

Bush’s claims of powers as commander in chief included:

    1. He is not bound by the Constitution and can suspend a citizen’s rights.

    2. He has the right to classify a citizen an enemy combatant and imprison them indefinitely.

    3. He has the power to use surveillance, search and seizure without the necessity of a warrant.

    4. All of the presidential powers are plenary and not subject to review by the US courts and Congress.

These were the positions of Bush via John Woo. These opinions were ultimately withdrawn shortly before the transfer of power to Obama. These ridiculous legal arguments were the basis of the lawlessness of the Bush administration. Many of these so called powers have been challenged in the Patriot Act and the president has lost.

  201. Zooey says:

    Back at ya, freeman:

    Yield and overcome;
    Bend and be straight;
    Empty and be full;
    Wear out and be new;
    Have little and gain;
    Have much and be confused.

Therefore wise men embrace the one
And set an example to all.
    Not putting on a display,
    They shine forth.
    Not justifying themselves,
    They are distinguished.
    Not boasting,
    They receive recognition.
    Not bragging,
    They never falter.
    They do not quarrel,
So no one quarrels with them.
Therefore the ancients say, ‘Yield and overcome.’
    Is that an empty saying?
    Be really whole,
And all things will come to you.

These partisan folks definitely need to stop the name calling. It’s easy enough to express your opposition to a position without name calling. Like Howard Dean said, “Even in the darkest days of the Bush/Cheney administration, I don’t think there was any reason to call George Bush a fascist.”

Yet in those same dark days, the republicans framed every debate as “democrats hate our troops.” I don’t remember you crying about that, though. Hypocrisy is a standard of the Right.

    July 6th, 2009 at 2:42 pm
    ______

I’m not sure whether I ever addressed the “dems hate troops” issue or not, but, if it makes you feel better:

The vast majority of Dems do not hate our troops or the military in general. There are those on the far left who, in their hatred for all things military, have and do denigrate those who represent the military. There are also those who smear the military in general for the crimes of a few. But, Dems in general are very supportive of our troops.

Unfortunately, hypocrisy is all too common among the far left as well as the far right. Not that you could be expected to recognize it in your own kind, bud. ;)

  205. elscottro says:

wow, missing the issue all together, what about high command, really; do you think these orders come from ground level, come on. get over the topic but, give greddence to those before the previous deciscion makers and logic can be found; yet, we need new logic and mind set, so, what can we do with the curretn admin.

  206. theagitator says:

I see the Tea Parties as a very good thing. We might not all agree on the individual messages, but it is time that we Americans got motivated enough to turn off the TV and get off our lazy backsides and get out and protest a government that is almost totally corrupted on both sides by the lobbyists (and I include AIPAC) and corporate money.

There are a few whom I believe are not corrupted such as Bernie Sanders, Kucinich, Ron Paul, and some others.

There is no doubt about this corrupting influence. Only the will and outrage of the people as demonstrated by Americans marching and demonstrating on the street can change it.

I was there with a film crew – we are making an independent film about the wing nuts – we have the interview with “Nazi sign guy”…I posted all of the links to my photo albums and a link to the YouTube video at http://ongoliard.50webs.com

It was really, really, weird being there…I have a talk radio show in Jax and Joe Lyles, local talent, is making the documentary and I get to help! His site is http://www.cgradio.net

    Enjoy :-)
