This past Sunday on Fox News, House Minority Leader John Boehner issued this stinging, but false, criticism of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act:
BOEHNER: This was supposed to be about jobs, jobs, and jobs. And the fact is it turned into nothing more than spending, spending, and more spending on a lot of big government bureaucracy. In Ohio, the infrastructure dollars that were sent there months ago — there hasn’t been a contract let, to my knowledge. And the fact is is that I don’t believe it will create jobs.
Watch it:
Media Matters fact-checked Boehner’s statement, noting that the Ohio Department of Transportation had been using stimulus funds “for work on 52 projects.” On June 15, the ODOT issued a statement noting that the stimulus funds were helping to create jobs. “As contracts are awarded, construction companies begin to mobilize workers for these jobs,” the statement read.
Today, ODOT issued a new statement distancing itself from Boehner. The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports:
ODOT spokesman Scott Varner called Boehner’s statement “disappointing.”
Varner noted that ODOT had just OK’d six more stimulus road projects, which will cost about $43 million.
Boehner’s office was forced to backpedal in the face of new criticism from ODOT. After initially claiming that not a single contract had resulted from the stimulus funds, Boehner issued a revised statement, complaining that “the entire process has been absurdly slow moving just as Republicans warned.”
Just last month, Boehner was touting the fact that stimulus was creating “much-needed jobs” for his state. Boehner just can’t keep his talking points straight in his feverish rush to issue political attacks against Obama.
Boehner is clueless about most things – except the price of a bottle of Scotch.

July 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pmMy goodness, I surely hope that Bohner does not get re-elected. May all of his bogus statements lead to a new Senator in his seat.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:06 pmThat hound won’t hunt Boner. Even your most dillusional mindless constituents will be able to see the construction signs as they drive around your district.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:07 pmThat is a true statement. Boehner doesn’t believe. He doesn’t believe in fact checking or evidence. So the question should be put to the voters of Ohio, Why believe in Boehner?

July 7th, 2009 at 3:08 pmBoehner like many other Republicans will go on TV and assert a lie. When caught, the lie is retracted but not on TV. That is the MO of the Republicans and don’t expect Fox to challenge the statements.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:11 pmBoehner was right!
There hasn’t been a contract! That would indicate just one!
There has been many contracts!
Oh, Boehner! Why didn’t the rest of the world believe you when you told them carbon dioxide comes from cow farts?

That’s some funny shit Bonehead! You actually feel justified touting you and your regressive’s warnings when it was your obstruction that caused most of the delay? How does Ohio keep electing this fool?

July 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pmThis coming from a man who said the Matthew Shepard hate crime bill made him “want to throw up.”
Is Boner preparing for a post-politics job as a Faux News commentator?
July 7th, 2009 at 3:17 pmIt’s okay, Mr. Varner – the rest of us are disappointed in Mr. Boner, too.
We’d better knock it off, though, we don’t want to make him cry.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:18 pmRemember Mr. Boehner your title is MINORITY Leader. Kinda makes you the head of the losers in the House.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:19 pmBoehner just manipulates the truth so Fox can manipulate it’s sheep viewers reality. Republican good. Democrat baaaad…

July 7th, 2009 at 3:26 pmBoner has spent a little too much time under the sun lamp
July 7th, 2009 at 3:26 pmFor a state agency to say anything about a Senator is rather dicey news. (The Senator can be instrumental in getting them money when they need it).
So take the statement and crank up the volume 1,000 x
July 7th, 2009 at 3:29 pmIt might not be their fault. Boehner is from the 8th district of Ohio, just north of Cinncinnati. I think that is one of those districts in which George W. Bush got 200% of the vote in 2004.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:31 pmThe people in Ohio who voted for Bone-head should hang their heads in shame… and go get themselves sterilized so they no longer pass on those Stupid-as-a-bag-of-rocks genes into the human population.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:31 pmMapleStreet, he’s in the House. No way Crybaby Boner wins a statewide, he’s gotta settle for his little gerrymandered slice of Ohio.

The 2004 presidential election pretty much sums up the “brilliance” of Ohio voters………….
July 7th, 2009 at 3:37 pmStraight from the Republican Handbook:
Chapter 3 — Never Acknowledge Errors
July 7th, 2009 at 3:38 pmThe voters voted for Boner knowing he knew nothing and would do nothing for them. Boner is in office to collect pay to play and give stupid speeches and of course playing golf. As the citizens of Boner’s district suffer Boner is living good off lobbyist money.
July 7th, 2009 at 3:41 pmNo, MCMetal, 2004 sums up the “brilliance” of having Kenneth Blackwell serve as both Sec of State and GOP Chair for Ohio, and utilizing Ohio-based Diebold for the vote.
What lacked brilliance re Ohio 2004 was Kerry’s willingness to capitulate 12 hours after the count was complete. Had Franken followed Kerry’s lead, Senator Coleman would be serving.

July 7th, 2009 at 3:43 pmEither he is being intentionally misleading or he is simply ignorant.
If he’s lying for the sake of propaganda, he deserves to be removed from the house. If he is ignorant he deserves to be removed from the house.
Sickening that the leader of the Republicans in the house is nothing more than a mouthpiece for propaganda.

In a football game, one team has the ball and the other team attempts to keep them from advancing it down the field. If the offensive team fails to move the ball a sufficient distance, the ball switches sides and the defensive team gets a chance with it.
Kind of like what our political system has become. Right now, the Democrats have the ball and they’re trying to advance it, while the Republicans are doing everything they can to keep them from gaining any yardage.
The ball handlers could move the ball a lot further if the Republicans would just go away, it’s true. But even with a row of defensive linemen in front of them, the Democrats are still gaining enough yardage to get another set of downs.
I think everybody can see the parallel here. However, in a real football game, the defense is pretty open about what they’re doing. Yes, they go all out to sack the quarterback, intercept passes, and tackle ball carriers — and they don’t pretend otherwise. And they would look pretty silly complaining that the team with the ball was moving the ball too slowly down the field, wouldn’t they? Well — Boehner looks pretty silly, too.

Boner`s just pissed off, he wanted the money to go to people opening up tanning salons. WOW I feel like a wingnut, making a stupid and irrelevant comment.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:13 pm…”to my knowledge” seems to be the operative phrase. Knowledge seems to be one thing he’s woefully lacking.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:16 pmThat football analogy is very apt. Our government has become a game. And the game itself isn’t important because the players change sides depending on where the money is. Nor does it matter to the players, really who wins or loses, as long as they get paid.
I wonder how many football players would stay in the game if every time they screwed up, somebody in the stands died?
July 7th, 2009 at 4:19 pmSpencer’s Mom and MissColeptraMolly,
Of course, the problem is that the football analogy is for a system of one side against the other. One must win at the expense of the other side loosing.
Kind a sad way to spend one’s life.
And, of course, you’re right about Boner being in the House and not Senate. But I’d have to stand by my point that state agencies just don’t say anything about Congress Critters, even state Congresscritters.
The fact that a state agency said they are “disappointed” is HUGE.

___________________________________________________________
It’s also a sad political system. The football analogy gains even more traction when you consider how many people there are out there who can’t be bothered to learn about any issues, but they sure know what team they’re rooting for. They will defend their team and trash-talk the other team with their last breath regardless of circumstance, and regardless of how hypocritical they sound.
I would much prefer a forest fire analogy. Or a construction project analogy. The goal is to get the fire put out, or to get the skyscraper built. There will be disagreements about what hoses to use, which wall to build first, or where to dig trenches, but the overall objective is the same for everyone. And to get to that objective, cooperation and teamwork occur in spite of methodology differences.
But what do we get instead? Limbaugh openly hoping the president will fail. Boehner blocking at every opportunity and complaining about lack of progress. Republicans stuffing bills with earmarks and then voting against them.
We deserve better.
July 7th, 2009 at 4:49 pm…because republicans are always right…
July 7th, 2009 at 4:50 pmWhy is everyone blaming Boner. Perhaps our blames should be channeled to the dumb democrat Hoyer who allowed him to get away with it without a peep.
